So I got my tattoo from the Dutch dude Igor, well, because we're Dutch, and it was fun talking my native language with someone other than my kids. We had figured out our design and placement. The most time was spent actually prepping out design, which took about an hour with the expert input from Igor helping us decide what would look best. We all 3, my two sons and I, got the same tattoo. A family tattoo and saying we have been sharing these past years. The pain from tattooing will never be my favorite. Igor did accomplish this super-quickly, about 10-15 minutes for our 3-word statement. We got this great bandage, instead of the normal plastic covering, which I completely adored and worked a miracle in my healing really well. Price had been agreed upon and was more than fair. THIS WAS THE BEST TATTOO EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD! Ava is a total beast when it comes to tattooing! From the moment I walked in the door for the consultation she was really inviting and personable and was really psyched about collaborating on this tattoo of my cat. Her style is old hollywood and that is exactly what I was looking for! I have a really sassy kitty and wanted the tattoo to represent her personality and aloof demeanor, and Ava was able to really capture her essence in her mock-ups. When came in for the tattoo she had my kitty all drawn out and had brought some embellishment options as well which I loved! We were able to find a happy medium of aesthetic and functionality when it came to placing the embellishments - she was really honest with her suggestions and helped me see things from her perspective in terms of how the tattoo will look over time depending on where certain accents were placed. During the tattoo (my first portrait/color piece) she tattooed with a light hand and was super calm the whole time! I got this piece on my calf and even though I jolted a number of times, I can't find any jagged or unruly lines. The tattoo looks absolutely stunning and she event sold me some natural tattoo salve which healed my tattoo so much faster than aquaphore which everyone uses. One for the arrow, one for the mountain, and one showing how I wanted them combined. The next day I arrived for my appointment and his design exceeded my expectations, it wasn't a copy of anything I had sent him; it was his artistic interpretation and better than I imagined. I got my very first tattoo here in 2008. Fresh-faced and unfamiliar with tattoos and armed with money, Tigerlily was recommended to me by a few friends. It took 3 different people blowing me off before someone finally sent me outside and upstairs to someone else who could help me. The guy, who never told me his name, ended up being my artist. He was a genius with a pen, I made a shape in the air of what I wanted the script to look like and he penned it perfectly. I left that day feeling confident. When I returned, it was a different story. On the day of my appointment, the guy said he hadn't eaten all day and had a headache. I offered to reschedule my appointment or postpone it so he could eat. He declined and insisted he was fine. He brought a sandwich into my session to eat WHILE he was tattooing me. It was disgusting. During my session (which was a 30 minute one of just putting a name onto my wrist), he visibly flinched/shook which caused him to mess up my tattoo. He offered no apology for it. If he had ever told me his name, I would urge everyone to steer clear of him for his over-priced messed up tattoo. Overall, the art done by the artists in the shop is incredible and I still think this is a great location. Just, be careful. I have a permanently messed up tattoo thanks to one of their careless artists. read more

I got my first tattoo from Igor at Tigerlily while visiting my best friend. We got matching carrots and I was definitely nervous. But thanks to Igor, my first tattoo experience was better than I could have hoped. We brought in actual carrots from the grocery store and asked him to design something for us. We had planned on shrinking it once he drew it, but his design was so good, we went for the life-sized real deal. He was gentle, clean, and really helpful in explaining how to care for it once we left. He was so good that I waited 2 years to get my next tattoo just so I could go to him. Not that I mind - Portland is awesome and I'll visit my friend any time. But I can't even imagine a better tattoo experience. Second time was just as good as or better than the first. I lucked out and made my appointment just before Igor left for Holland for a month. He remembered me and my friend as the carrot girls. This tat is smaller than the carrot and just black lines, took Igor about 20 minutes - 1 hour total with design and setup - and healing time was virtually none. August of last year my Hubby and I received tattoo gift certificates as a wedding present. That is right, wedding present! It is the best present we got for sure! Our best man gets all his work done by the owner of Tigerlily, Matt Reed. He wasn't in the day we went by to book our appt so we looked in the profile books and picked Matthew Mattison. Last week I finally had my day at Tigerlily. I booked my appt about 3 months ago and it was a long but well worth while wait. Matthew Mattison is AMAZING! I wanted a Tiki and showed him a few designs to get him started. He drew up something for me on the spot and I love it. He generally works in black and gray, but was up for doing color on me. The shading is fantastic and the colors he picked were spot on. I have had multiple tattoos done over the years but his is by far the best and my favorite. He also finished up another tattoo I had and now that one is perfect as well! I sat with him for a total of 4 hours. I have found the artist to work with for the rest of my life that is for sure. He is so talented and a really down to earth guy who loves to tattoo. He hails from Oahu, HI and has been tattooing for 17 years now, 8 of which are with Tigerlily. That alone tells me something that an artist would stick with the same place that long. He is charging 130 an hour and that doesn't include drawing or consulting time, which usually artists do charge for those things as well. I was pleasantly surprised. All the artists at Tigerlily are really good so I can't imagine getting a bad tattoo from any of them. If you want seriously outstanding work, go to Tigerlily! SO, here's my story. I had this hideous tattoo on my upper back from my punk rock youth. (You certainly make the best permanent body modification choices at the age of 15). Well, needless to say... I have been stuck with this embarrassment for nearly 10 years. It was time to say goodbye to my past and hello to my future. Tigerlilly has been a well known shop for years. They have tattooed a good portion of my friends and luck for me, me, twice. The whole place is cool. The upstairs location which is quiet and private, and the street side shop which is what you expect from a street shop. the music is louder, the lobby a little more packed full of people. I had been debating getting a cover up over the past three years of a tattoo removal. Hesitant after my last experience I wanted to be sure I would never regret a new tattoo. Ruppert took the image in my minds eye and brought it to life, a beautifully delicate black and grey half sleeve is the result of his patience, kindness, and gift. I made an appointment at a certain time and Matt texted me saying he was running late and told me to arrive 30 min after the appointment, so I had to drive back home, I only drove like two blocks when he texted me. Well when I was in my way he called me and said he was making phone calls all morning and told me to wait a little more. I waited an hour and ten min in my car, I called him and texted him and he did not answered back. He also said he was going to send me by text a drawing of my tattoo and he never did. He does not have responsibility, If he could at least had called me and reschedule but not even. Its a shame because I heard he was good, too bad for him because this was gonna be my first tattoo of all the ones that were going to come. Matthew Mattison is the best tattoo artist in the whole wide world. Maybe even the universe :) I live in SF and have traveled to Portland twice to get ink from him and both times I have been thrilled with his work. Not only is he a great artist, he is so patient and kind! For both pieces I simply told him an idea of what I was interested in and he took the time to draw each piece with me and show me all the endless possibilities. While he's working he is chatty and truly excited to be doing the work! Sometimes I think he's more excited than I am! Anyway - I can't say enough about how wonderful Matthew and Tigerlily Tattoo is. Service was terrible! I had an appointment set up for 12:00 and it took the guy an hour and a half just to get my tattoo printed out and drawn. Then he spent the whole time complaining that my simple geometric design was really hard, and he had printed it out backwards! Then he tattooed me for 20 minutes, didn't really talk through what was happening, and the tattoo wasn't even great. Wasn't bad, but wasn't great!! Over all a very disappointing experience. read more
