Oh man, we loved Forty Six! After a long day of hiking, we were starving and dinner here totally hit the spot. We started with the all local salad which was really fresh, and the crispy seared brussel sprouts were out of this world. The combination of the blue cheese, bacon, and particularly the aged balsamic vinegar was so delicious and unique. The "I just climbed a mountain" cheeseburger is exactly what you want to eat after climbing a mountain. We topped it off with the black forest cake and Harney & Sons lemon herbal tea. Everything was so well done. We also appreciated the service. The hostess and servers were so hospitable. I overheard a French-speaking party next to us tell the server that she is "kindly." The restaurant itself is really beautiful, comfortable and inviting, the kind of place you want to hang out in. We will definitely make this one of our regular places when we're up here! read more

We ate here 3 times during our 2 days stay in Keene--breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their breakfast was the best of the 3 meals. And also the best in the area. My new favorite breakfast place in the area- pain perdu (french toast) is amazing. The server said it is a "labor of love" and you can absolutely tell. Griddle cakes, bacon, coffee... everything was outstanding. Impressed by how quickly food was served. Loved the coffee cups... great atmosphere and very clean. First time here. End of May. Used to be the ADK cafe, but with a new name and owner. Was hungry after a long day of driving and hiking, and the meal did not disappoint. Staff was attentive, place was clean, and food was delicious. I had salmon with asparagus in cream sauce. Just right, with the right amount of seasoning and I didn't feel bloated or stuffed like with some restaurants. Had a good tasting Cabernet Franc to go with the entree. Skip dessert? Are you kidding? I had the lemon cheesecake, which is locally made. Oh, so decadent. The eatery tries to locally source most of their food, which explains the slightly more expensive prices. Well worth the extra few dollars. The best quality fare for many miles. I returned the next morning for breakfast, and it was excellent. Great coffee, with brisket hash (quite creative), and eggs and home fries. read more

For the first time in ages I wish I could leave 10 stars instead of 5. Sitting to eat with a party of five and there were only noises of satisfaction coming from everyone and each of us urging the other to taste a sample of their dish. I was delighted with my own dish, but would have been equally happy to have ordered any one of the others that I tasted (I tried everybody's lunch-delicious!) My husband ordered the brisket which is something I would normally avoid and it was my favorite dish on the table. Lovely place in Keene with cozy and creative decor (I love the dish ware), wonderful and welcoming service from our first step in the door to leaving, and the food that was seasonal, fresh, inspired and simply delicious. It was great finding a place this enjoyable so close-by. I appreciate that they took reservations so I was able to assure our party a table when we arrived for a Friday dinner - I'm glad I did too since the dining room was fairly small and intimate - perhaps 10-12 tables in total. The appetizers all looked so good that we ended up ordering one of everything for the table - the brussel sprouts, Mac & cheese, duck fat rolls, and arancini were all quite good, the soup of the day: potato leek was absolutely delicious. After all the apps we weren't all that hungry so we ended up splitting one sandwich or entree for each couple - which they graciously accommodated. All entrees were quite good as well - including both the cheeseburger and the veggie burger (the veggie burger was very soft and tended to come out the sides of the bun when biting into it - still delicious though). We didn't have any space left for desert so we ended up passing on that - but were still treated to a tiny Nutella cream puff for each of us. Another cool touch that stuck out to me was the tablet the waitress brought when we were paying the check that allowed her to process the credit card tableside and me to tip electronically on the tablet with no delay. read more

Breakfast review- hash browns were great. End of the greatness. Service weak. No salt, no pepper on any table which is fine if you can ask a server but none to be found. Coffee is good but refills are non-existent for far too long. Ketchup, forget it. Same as salt, pepper and coffee. Probably available if your server is. How hard is this stuff if you run a restaurant?. Bring your own salt, pepper, ketchup and plan to get up to get a coffee refill. Again, hash browns are amazing. Really cute place! We had the brussels sprouts and cauliflower, both of which were great. I had the salmon entree and it was small but delicious. The lemon sauce was great. My husband had the steak and fries and the fries were PERFECT. The only downside was the hostess. We came in early (around 5:40pm) and she sighed loudly when we said that we didn't have reservations. Used to be a very frequent patron, but won't come back!! Drove from our home in Lake Placid to enjoy the high peaks. Eager to bring family for Mother's Day lunch, wanted to get take out so we could picnic outside with our puppy. Completed our order with the gracious ladies front of house. But the snarky chef, who claimed to be out of takeout containers refused to honor the order wouldn't even let us sit outside on the al fresco patio to eat with his precious plasticware. I wanted to love this restaurant, in fact we didn't stay to eat, so I can't comment on the food. We were staying at the Dartbrook Lodge (which was amazing) for our anniversary. We wanted a nice lunch before a hike with our 8 year old. We arrived at Forty Six around 11:40 on Saturday 8/18. There was one large table seated and two two tops. The rest of the restaurant was empty. We stood at the door for about 5 min. A woman came over, but did not acknowledge we were there. She appeared to be helping someone who wanted to be on the patio near their dog who popped in the door behind us. A greeting at this point would have been great. We stood there another 5 min and peaked around the corner towards the kitchen. A few more minutes later the woman comes and says "how many"? Looks around the empty restaurant and tells us she will need to set an appropriate table for us. She sets the table but does not come back, but goes back out to the patio. we are still at the door and now have been waiting at an empty restaurant for 15 minutes. Another group walks in, walks past us and sits down. A waitress appears and the woman says, pointing to us " oh yeah they need to go there. The waitress instead goes to the other table. The woman then decides to seat us. My husband asks, "are you the waitress?", but she curtly responds I'm the manager and walks away. We are now sitting at the table with no menus. The waitress then goes to the other large table. After being in the restaurant for 25 minutes with a not so welcoming atmosphere and no menus, we decided to leave. While I no longer work in the restaurant business, I did for many years. I'd like to think this was a bad day or just a fluke, but I did not feel the warm and inviting atmosphere people wrote about. The menu looks amazing and I'm sorry I didn't get to try it. Acknowledging that guests are there with a "Hello, I'll be right there", can go a long way. Even realizing that people are there can help. Even more importantly, being aware that after people have waited, ( although I'm not sure they were even aware that we were standing in the doorway for 10 minutes) it's not beyond a manager to bring menus and maybe even share the specials. While we were there we almost felt like we were inconveniencing them. Not one person said hello, and the whole process of getting us seated and even the short conversation while being seated seemed more like we were an annoyance. read more

I felt great walking in and that soon ended.. We were seated and wondered if they had menus??. Finally they realized we were sitting there for 5 or ten minutes without menus.. Our server took our order and eventually returned with our drinks, mine was coffee. I was never asked if I would like cream and sugar.. LOL.. And was a job waiting awhile to get the attention of the server of my need.. The food finally came out.. No ketchup or salt and pepper for the table I was really starting to wonder if it was her first day or stoned or something.. Took 2 times to get those items.. Another server brought us the ketchup and asked each up us sitting there if we would like some while holding 3 little bowls of it when 3 of us had fries on our plates???... The fries were good and that is were that ended.. Two of us had the brisket on sourdough rye and was burned some on the bottom and hard and crunchy, That may be what they think is the way to serve it but was mediocre at best.. Over priced for not so great food was the taste in my mouth when we left.. I was expecting from the prices to be happy when we left.. I was tempted to walk out a couple of times but bit my tongue I usually don't even right reviews of places unless they are over the top good but this was the worst service I have ever seen anywhere.. We literally stumbled on this restaurant...and are so glad we did. The staff was friendly and helpful; the space was warm (they have a little stove that pushes out welcome heat) and cozy; there were well dressed couples and folks straight off the mountain, and the food was great! We had the "special" beet and feta salad, the squash risotto starter, and the pumpkin bread pudding...and it was easily the best meal we have had in a long time. We can't wait to come back.
