Fosters used to be my favorite local fast food joint. Short story: I wanted a treat. I hadn't had a dipped cone in over 10 years, so I stopped to get one. The cone on the menu without dip was like 4.50. I was astonished, but it was a treat so I was ok with it. The literal gasp I had when the cashier said my total was $6.50+! For a SMALL dipped cone. I drove away thinking ok, well, it'll be delicious and it's a treat, so I'll unclutch my pearls and park to enjoy my investment. No... the chocolate was SUPER waxy and the ice cream wasn't even as good as McDonald's. I was seriously disappointed. Foster's has always been pricy but good. I have hesitated posting a review of our recent visit because Foster's been an icon since I moved here in the 70's. This was my husbands favorite restaurant since his days attending Salinas High, but I just heard another location was coming to North Salinas and then I read the other reviews and could not stay silent! We took our grandkids here because they loved their milkshakes. We decided to go in to grab a meal also. $64 later for 3 kids & 2 adults, I couldn't believe how much the food has shrunk. And my burger was obviously a child's patty on an adult bun. The driest thinnest patty I have EVER had! Sadly, we went to McDonald's a couple of days later and ordered a McDouble for $1.48 less and it was triple the thickness of this burger and JUICY! How is a burger patty SO dry? Maybe pre-cooked. After Dave retired and sold the S Main location the food quality has declined. Last night the 4th was my 3rd attempt to see if maybe just maybe it has gotten better. NOPE its actually the worst its ever been. The fries looked funky and hella crispy as if they had some sitting there and refried them. The Old Fashioned looked like it had been heated in a Panini press. Hella flat and toasted a bit. My Chocolate Malt shake was ok but at the bottom of my cup was all the malt. NEVER EVER AGAIN. The drive thru was kind of confusing because the regular drive thru entrance was re-routed (I guess due to Covid or idk why because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever why they did that) So now you enter the drive thru by going on to the parking lot in the opposite direction of traffic and you literally drive around the drive thru to get to it It was confusing and I am still confused by it obviously lol. read more

I grew up in Salinas ( I am 54) and going to FF. So when I had to come back to visit family, I really wanted to go back. Well, first the young lady that helped us, looked like she would rather be anywhere but there. The decor looked so aged and unkept. Next, the Ice Tea was disgusting, it almost looked thick coming out of the machine. After that, ALL tables were dirty. We used napkins and water to wipe ours down. Then we got our meal - apparently they went to a different distributor...the buns were sweet ! Like much more sweet than a Hawaiian roll. It's was Monday night the 2nd, around 9:30 or so. My Daughter and I craved ice cream and deep fried burritos. So we jumped into our SUV and brought our dog Koko, who gets super excited when we say "FOSTER". He knows that he is going to get his pup treat. Now, I must say that we have never been denied a pup treat. That evening in question, there was a young man being trained how to make an ice cream cone by 2 other young ladies. Que it came time to take our burritos and ice cream, we asked if he could have a pup treat. A pup treat usually consist of a small cup with some whipped cream. The young man asked me, what's that. I explained and he said one moment please and closed the window. He asked a young Latin gal, maybe the manager or the supervisor and she made a face and nodded her head no. The young trainee came to the window and apologized, and said sorry not tonight. Then closed the window. I was not even given the chance to offer to pay for the pup treat. That was embarrassing. We live in the Creekbridge area and have other choices for soft served ice cream or yogurt. But we love Fosters. Thanks to the new $20 an hour fast food minimum wage they've cut back their staff so no one was working the counter. They had 1 guy cooking and 1 guy at the drive through window. We came in to try their chocolate soft serve cone. They need more chocolate . My husband had a banana shake and said it was good. It had chunks of banana in it. We had to wait a while to get our ice cream. There was a longer wait for food for people that were already here. There were only 4 other people there. One guy got the wrong shake and when he came back in the building the lady behind the counter new it and quickly handed him the correct shake. The service was slow and confused. He put his finger up, smirked and started talking to the person in the drive thru. Clearly something he thinks is funny. The main reason I can never go back is the guy making the food (wears ear gauges), was not only cooking without gloves on, he was touching the food and wiping his fingers on his pants!! The novelty of this place is what makes it fun. I like the old time feel to the restaurant and there are a ton of ice cream options to choose from. The fry choices are also awesome. With that being said the price is just as expensive as a sit down full service restaurant. The burger/meal quality for the price is also a little disappointing. The meal was just ok. A nice place to go every once in a while, but when I go here and pay and arm and a leg it reminds me of why I don't go here too often.
