I have been going to Foster Freeze on S Main st for years. I usually go thru the drive up but went in with a friend on Sat. I was very disappointed to see how the inside of the building is not very clean. The wallpaper is coming off of the walls and it needs to be painted and the carpet is filthy. Talk about a place that's gone down hill! Foster's has been a institution in Salinas for decades... But, it's time has finally come. The food is, at best, marginal. They've always been expensive, but now they are completely un-affordable! I came in with my wife and 7-year old for lunch recently and a kids meal and two very modest meals for my wife and I came to over $40! We could have eaten at Chili's or Applebee's for that... and, had a better meal and been waited on! The most recent visit - may last by the way, was to buy a kids hot dog with a very small order of fries, and a chocolate milkshake... $10.00! I used to LOVE fosters. Having a craving for fries and sauce for a couple weeks I drug my husband here for dinner. Went through the drive thru got home 15 minutes later. Pull out my burger it's wrong. But fixable. Pull out the fries and they're cold. Like day or two old fries that had been cooked in oil way too cold to cook anything in. NASTY. I gave one to my husband(who was in the military and will eat anything) and his response was feed that shit to the dogs. My dinner is currently in the trash. I wouldn't even feed that to my dogs. Went there last night w/ some friends after the show cuz there wasn't much open at 10 PM on a Sunday evening. The food: my burger was piping hot & fresh. The banana shake was delicious & still my favorite shake in town. The scam: I used my debit card to pay for the grub but was not informed that i would be charged a buck for this transaction. Okay so we are here at Fosters freeze right now. The food is always good and the service is okay. We sat at a table downstairs since the upstairs is blocked off. There are plants hanging above us. My husband noticed something from the corner of his eye and sure enough it was a big spider. It was close to landing on his head. I don't think it's a good idea to have the plants hanging so close to where people eat. Plus, there are knats everywhere. I don't want to know what's in the sauce, but it's awesome. Old Fashioned burger, extra sauce and extra pickles, hold the cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Small fry. 3 sauce on the side. Small root beer. My order hasn't changed for decades. You will find me here on weekend nights, in the drive-thru, wearing my PJ's, buying a Mud Pie Twister. (I switch it up to a Pumpkin Pie Twister when it's "in season.") A small half and half cone? That's my go-to dessert. Foster's is where you go to remember the good times, to celebrate, to have fun... Been here twice since moving to the MBA. I missed having a Foster's Freeze nearby and the last one I used to frequent was the one near where I was stationed in southern California. First time we came in here we were greeted by a unique and very lively array of characters working at the counter / kitchen. Very friendly indeed. One of the tellers suggested I get a special type of burger with jalapeños added to it. I did as he suggested and it was actually very good. Not hot at all as he implied but then again, I do love my spicy food and most people can't eat a spoonful of what I call light spice. Still Foster's Freeze brings good memories of putting on weight to actual good ice cream and I'm so glad I have this nearby for all of my "get fat again" needs. My girl grew up on Foster's Freeze and Tico's tacos. She was under the impression that this was the original Foster's, which is not the case, but in her mind it's the only one that counts. The best thing about Foster's is their dipping sauce, which is very similar to both McDonald's Special sauce and In 'n' Out sauce. I've always loved Fosters Freeze, but yesterday I went through drive thru for an ice cream and was really disappointed to see the employees not following health safety guidelines in the kitchen. Me and my boy went Foster's. I ordered a large hamburger meal and my boy got just the hamburger and a shake no fries. It was $30 bucks and some change. It would have been cheaper to go to Chilli's with the tip included. Not to mention more food. We both didn't like the our food. Fries were over cooked. We both felt sick to our stomach after we ate. My boy said he did like the shake. And the cashier just seemed like she was bothered by having to serve us. Nothing she said. But just body language, looks and tone of voice. Borderline rude but definitely not friendly. If your going to charge outrageous prices then maybe just maybe invest in some good old fashion great customer service for your employees. The food is almost always fantastic, I definitely prefer Fosters over McDonald's any day. It's a little pricey but your getting what you pay for in a sense. From what I can tell most of the reviews complain about bad customer service, and I can say honestly that most of it isn't true. Sure they talk to each other, I'm sure if you had nice coworkers you'd want to talk to them too. Anyways, I got some praise worthy customer service. They greeted me as I came in, they called me up even before I was ready (which I heard others complain they never called them), I was met by a huge friendly smile and they seemed very eager to help and nothing but polite. Of course they're young kids, everyone starts somewhere and if your really one of those people who complains about that then I'm sure the Fosters Employees hate you as much as you talk shit about them. They're nice people, it's great food and you've definitely got to try the double decker. I go to Fosters at least once a week even if it's just for an ice cream cone, and every time I have he most pleasant experience. I don't know what fantasy these other reviewers are living in but they probably just like to complain. The debit thing caught me off guard my first time there but 1 dollar shouldn't be such a big deal unless your some poor low life that has nothing better to do but go on yelp and take out all of their PMS on Fosters.
