It was a Saturday afternoon when my husband and I decided to meet our daughter and son in law in FCR for the first time because it's mid-way from both couple's homes. Disappointed when saw it was packed! Everybody with their computer, which clearly meant they won't end any time soon. We had to drive to Vienna, so glad we did it as the other place had a very considerate sign "no available wifi on weekends". Coffee was pretty good. Pastries were little overpriced, but decent. The ambiance was just a little weird. When we went, it felt like we were interrupting a meeting. Everyone was super quiet and stared at us when we walked in. If you want to maybe get homework done or a nap, this is the perfect place. read more

Stopped in driving into work. Very peaceful, calm, chill atmosphere early in the morning. They were playing classical music and had nice low lighting. The seating was varied and many. If you genuinely like coffee this is the place for you. Their roast is amazing, you can see the process through a window in the back. I got a cappuccino and almond scone. We stopped in for to-go coffee but we were really impressed with the space! It is accessible from the back of the shopping center, and we really enjoyed our drip coffees and pastries. The seating options seemed to have a nice variety and some outdoor seating was set up as well. The entire staff seemed to be doing a great job keeping things clean and following COVID protocols. This is a new place in my local shopping centre and for it being just opened, its doing fairly well! This shop is hidden behind all the stores, but it's so quaint and just a sweet little surprise around the corner. I ordered an almond milk latte, and it came out at the perfect temperature. It was perfectly tasty, and didn't take too long to wait. As someone who comes to this shopping centre a lot, it's refreshing to find a new place to go. The cafe itself has a simple design and it's really nice inside. The workers were very kind and service was exceptional. Today is very cold, so this hot latte REALLY hit the spot. This is also quite the advancement considering a high school sits right across from this shopping centre, so I bet students will be visiting the shop soon. (Once they're back in school, of course.) As for the food, there wasn't much on the menu. There were a couple treats, but they were the kind of treats that are more for decoration than anything. No complaints from me, though. I didn't go there for breakfast, just coffee. The only complaint I have is that they did not have decaf. It's a new shop, so I hope they add some stuff soon, but overall they have a good start. read more

This is my second time here and in the first time I was concerned about the lack out outlets but this time I had a bit more time to walk around and sit down. I sat along the elevated bar behind the coffee bar and to a pleasant surprise there a many outlets along this seating areas. Another thing I had noticed was the large selection of international beans. They have a very large selection and on the packaging it tells you the flavor and location. I love this place! It has quickly become my favorite coffee shop in the area, because of both the atmosphere and the drinks/food. They have tons of seating so I've never had to wait for a table even when it's super busy, and it's a great place for working. I've had the green tea, chai, and vanilla lattes and various pastries and everything has been great. The green tea latte and chocolate swiss roll cake are my favorites though! Very cute and sleek coffee shop located behind the shopping center is a true hidden gem as noted my other yelpers! Plenty of parking in front of the store. Staff beyond friendly and so personable. Loved that! Ordered an expresso and cold brew, my usual when first visiting new coffee shops. The expresso was a bit bitter for my liking. The cold brew had a pleasant nutty tone. this place is located behind fair city mall, so it really feels like you found something special just for you :) although despite the hidden location, it was actually pretty populated! the coffee was great, and the shop was really cute. it had a nice atmosphere for working or for socializing. lots of big tables for larger groups or just to spread out. it also had a meeting room in the back. i didn't try any of their pastries but i definitely plan to next time - they looked amazing! i got the affogato, which is espresso over ice cream and is always one of my favorites, and it didn't disappoint. i can't believe i didn't know this place was there, and i'll definitely be back! read more

I wanted to love this place but the location leaves much to be desired. I thought they were located near the discount shopping of Fair City Mall, but they are situated behind the DSW past the dumpsters. The parking situation is sparse, the chairs are uncomfortable (stadium seating - killed your back) , lacking electrical outlets near the tables, but the biggest issue is the INTERNET! There was no connection and when you asked what the problem was the only response was "some people get on and some don't" or "we have been having issues", with no solution, just an apology. Really disappointing iced coffee. I went in this morning and ordered an iced coffee and it came out a very light brown (looked like iced tea). I told him that it tasted light and he told me that I have to order an extra shot if I want it darker. He then told me if I went anywhere for coffee and ordered a black iced coffee it would look like this. I guess he thought I've never been anywhere but Foundation for iced coffee vs. drink it every day for the last 15 years from different establishments. I wanted very much to support this place but once again a solid concept has been ruined by very poor service. I won't be going back and have already told 10 friends to steer clear. read more

The interior of this shop is quite unique- plenty of places to sit and work or chat. I got my latte and pastry to-go so I didn't stay to see access to outlets etc. The employees were friendly, but I don't think it's worth the price. I got a blueberry fruit tart and a vanilla latte. My mom loves canelé and I saw them listed on the menu on their website so we came hoping to try those with coffee. When we got there we asked the cashier about them but he let us know that unfortunately they no longer sell them. The cashier was so kind though and gave us a dacquoise on the house since they didn't have canelé. My mom and I ordered a vanilla latte, chai latte, and a cranberry scone which were all good and not too sweet for our taste. Great costumer service so I will definitely come again!! read more

I'm a newer transplant to the East Coast, and had previously lived in the Pacific Northwest, home to arguably some of the best coffee shops in the world. I've also been a barista at smaller, privately owned coffee shops, so I can appreciate the quality coffee that comes from such places. Foundation is the best coffee shop I've discovered since I've moved to the area, by a very wide margin. The espresso is beautifully roasted and delicious, the limited menu allowing for very little margin of error. These people know how to craft a quality cup of coffee, and I will absolutely be coming again and again. Their lobby is open and spacious, and their location on the backside of the shopping mall actually makes the place seem more cozy and intimate. The staff were absolutely lovely, as well. 20/10, absolutely recommend. Keep up the excellent work!! read more

Update 9/19/20 - Grand Opening day. BOGO free drinks! We ordered a vanilla latte, iced chai and 2 iced chocolate milks. One of my daughters has a nut allergy and I always ask about any nut concerns wherever we go. A few of their pastries use almond flour, so be sure to ask if nuts are a concern. The canale is what was recommended and she loved it. I apologized for the multiple questions and hassle of asking about ingredients and the gentleman was so patient and shared that he has kids too (and one on the way) and understands the concern for kids. Such a kind, kind staff. Coffee is delicious. Delicious pastries. Beautiful decor. We did eat a little meal before coming as they don't serve food (mainly pastries - maybe on the menu in the future? ) but what an awesome way to end the meal. If you're around Fair City Mall you should check them out. If you're not in the area and * bucks won't do, it's worth the trip. read more

This really isn't a reveiw about Foundation Coffee, though they have delicious coffee. I took my daughter there for a math tutoring session that went great on 5 Nov. I waited outside of Foundation Coffee on the grassy area to the left of the building while facing their door. I waited with my 15 week old puppy who got very sick about 2 hours later. Pender Vet said that she had ingested marjuana somewhere in that area. If you're a dog owner, please be careful. If you are marjuana enthusiast, please discard your leftovers appropriately. I like that this is a small independent business, so I am giving an extra star for that. I have been a couple of times, and each time I don't know why I bother going back. Admittedly, I am a bit picky when it comes to coffee because I drink it black, lightly sweet, so the flavor is paramount, which is why my drip coffeemaker at home is a Technivorm. I have not enjoyed the coffee any more than I would from a larger chain company that offers it at a lower price and larger size, as it has been watery and lacking the flavor notes that it should have. Perhaps it's the coffee that I selected, but both times the barista seemed to be a bit hurried (despite no customer after me, each time, and the previous order finished), and not welcoming or friendly as other reviewers have mentioned, so I did not bother asking about anything as the vibe transmitted was clearly not in guiding me to the perfect cup of coffee. I was not expecting the equivalent of Hayman's Jamaica Blue Mountain, but I was expecting something unique and flavorful. I didn't even bother with the pastries because I have allergies and eat a plant-based diet, so I was prepared for everything to be unfriendly in that regard as well. Come to think of it, I do not even know if they have stevia for sweetening the coffee, since I got the impression that I should not ask questions. The service was pleasant enough and efficient, but not friendly and welcoming, which made me wonder if I had gone to the wrong coffee shop from the reviews I have seen. The interior space looked nice and open, but I was not planning to consume on premises, especially when I took a sip and had to head to the grocery store nearby for some stevia to add to it. Since this was originally intended as a loading area, parking is sparse, especially when the place is filled with people socializing or hanging out in the space, and I have had to park halfway to Potbelly in order to walk back to the shop. I do not care about parking a distance away, but combined with no sidewalks or other pedestrian-friendly accommodations and cut-through traffic from around the back of the mall with cars driving too rapidly for a parking lot with pedestrians, it makes for a less than secure feeling. Also, no outdoor space is a shame as well, as even Potbelly and Kokee have a few outdoor tables, which even McDonald's has in this location too. Add to that the ambiance of dumpsters and it's a weird location from the outside, good adaptive reuse, but not fully executed in my view for a modern coffee shop. The shop is also closed on Sundays, something that I did not anticipate when I tried to visit another time. I like the idea of this shop, but for me, the coffee and experience have not made me want to go out of my way to return, If I'm in the area, I would give it another try over one of the chain places, but it's not a destination on its own. read more

I normally don't leave reviews as I understand what small businesses go through, especially coffee shops. People working remote for free using the coffee shops resources is not right, and today one of the staff definitely embarrassed me if front of many other customers. I have been a regular coming to foundation for the past two years, doing school work/papers there and most recently coming every week to work remotely. I order something every time I am there, sometimes sitting and working for 15-20 minutes before doing so. Today I was there just like every other time, sitting, getting my laptop and work set up when I received a call so I couldn't stray far from my computer. I was there for about 15 - 20 minutes on the phone until which, I was interrupted by one of the staff (an older man) which rudely interrupted me and asked if I was waiting for a friend. My answer was no, and that I was a regular who has come for the past few years and always order something. There were customers around us who overheard the conversation and it was honestly embarrassing for me to have that happen. I understand that businesses have rules that are enforced, and the owner was there today so he probably told the staff to address me like that. I don't think it needed to be so in front of the other customers, and I don't think It was fair of them to do that as I have been a regular coming for the past few years and they definitely recognize me. Needless to say, I will not be going there again, I do not feel comfortable being watched like that and addressed the way in which that man addressed me. read more

I am always on the lookout for new espresso places while visiting friends and family. The taste of the espresso shots are amazing here. And baristas do a wonderful job with lattes both hot and iced as well. Great place to study or read or go online with a nice woody interior that is library-esque. Wish they were in Massachusetts too. GO AROUBD TO THE BACK OF THE SHOPPING CENTER! The coffee shop is behind the movie theater pretty much, so don't get confused and go to the main strip. Amazing staff, great coffee (4 single origin and 2 blends), and a charming environment that you'd hope to get out of a coffee roaster.
