I came here for dinner about 2 weeks ago a Friday night. The customer service was exellecent. Although it was a busy night with a full house the staff was very attentive and they did not make us feel rushed to close our check and hurry to leave despite being the last ones there after closing. The food was delicious I ordered the special, which was a lamb shank on a bed of polenta that night. My date ordered the risotto was also amazing. The portion sizes were generous with both took to go boxes. I will definitely make this place one of my regular go-to's. read more

We were so delighted with our take-out meal tonight. The servings were large and absolutely delicious. It's not much to look at from the outside (I thought it was a sandwich shop), but once I saw the menu, I knew I had found someplace special. An added plus is their extensive wine list with plenty of Washington wines to choose from. I ordered the Grilled Halibut and was not disappointed. It was delicious! Still a fabulous restaurant! We were here a few years ago and came back on this trip. We both had the duck dinner. Duck perfectly cooked and the fig sauce was amazing on it. Dinner came with potatoes and broccolini both flavored nicely and not overcooked. The baguette served with the meal was warm and very tasty. This made for such a great night. We split the mussels and clams, which were probably the best I've ever had in my life. Unless you're a old white woman which is apparently all they want to accommodate, don't waste you're time. I was excited to try this place for lunch with my husband, daughter and father for lunch. So when I tried to dine here for lunch I was shocked that first I was told I could not bring in my umbrella stroller that folds up smaller than a backpack. They told me the "owner had an issue with strollers" and that I'd have to leave it on the side porch. Huh?? So between that and the dirty looks we got from the patrons and the snarky attitude from the waitress, we dined elsewhere. read more

For service I'd give it a 5 star because our waiters were great! They were friendly and very attentive. However, the food took over an hour to arrive and was sub par, especially for the price. The salmon was chewy and overly salty. The risotto was watery. The lamb was under seasoned. The mushrooms were rubbery. Really not worth the wait or the price. I come here every so often with my family and although the restaurant is tiny so they have to cram as many people in there as possible, the food is exceptional. I like to get the wild boar sloppy joe, which is best consumed with a fork and knife. However, I still like to try the occasional special. I don't think you can really go wrong at the Fountain Cafe.... now that I recall I have never had a single bad meal there. If you show up at the entrance and see a line out the front door, it's there for a reason and the food is well worth the wait. read more

I went there last Sunday around 2 pm. Most tables were packed, we were seated after waiting not too long. It looked like all customers just came in at the same time. Server was fast and well organized. So we think it should be not too long. She took order fast, drink was served also fast, BUT food!!!! We were waiting for our sandwiches 1 hour after appetizer. We ordered clam and mussels for appetizer. It was delicious. It was fresh, rich and flavorful. For appetizer took about 30 mins which still acceptable. My main dish was turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce. To me it was average. Roasted turkey and sauce were cold. I waited for almost 1 hour (after appetizer) for an average cold turkey sandwich. However, bread was warmed up and not so bad. I was there at 2 pm and get off the place around 3:50. Too much for lunch I think read more

Wow. We stopped at Port Townsend Tuesday and ate dinner at the Fountain Cafe. The food was incredible. I had the beef stroganoff and it was excellent. We also had the muscles and clams as an appetizer and those were also amazing. I could have been totally happy with just the appetizer and bread for dinner. My daughter suggested The Fountain Cafe for a Father's Day dinner. A fabulous choice on her part. It's a small well laid out cafe that makes it larger than it is. Coupled with friendly and knowledgeable staff and a delicious menu this place certainly deserves a place in the rotation. Speaking of the menu they put their twist on traditional menu items. With this being said if you order a Caesar salad you may be put off by their riff, which was excellent by the way. The three of us (my wife was also in on this) ordered apps and entrees. The apps were very good and you can't go wrong with the clams and mussels. The entrees did not disappoint. The beef stroganoff was very tasty and well seasoned with a generous serving. The paella and puttanesca followed suit and will not leave you wanting. As I mentioned before they tend to put their mark on a dish. This was evident with the puttanesca. I prefer it with a touch more heat than what was served. Did it destroy the occasion? Hell no, I loved it. We walk in and we are the only brown colored people there. Something that escaped my notice until I realised everyone was starting at us. We go up to the bar and the bartender gives my husband the coldest look possible and my totally non confrontational husband blurts " we will have just one drink and leave" The bartender replies "we only have beer and wine...so..." this whole entire time IAM still standing. I've been on a foodie's tour of Portland and Seattle, and this restaurant was better than any of the places I've eaten in both of those food cities. Why? Because the food had heart, there was passion in the menu, and the wait staff of ONE was managing the whole room and yet attended to our every need. Wow! We started with two appetizers, an exotic mushroom dish cooked in sherry and basil and served over warm brie. The mushrooms were fresh, perfectly cooked, and the flavor was amazing! The brie was the perfect compliment and yet not too heavy that we weren't hungry for our entrees. I had one of the specials of the evening, which was hazelnut-crusted chicken with lemon parsley brown-butter and Gorgonzola, served with potatoes and veggies. Everything came out piping hot, which I love, and perfectly cooked. Everyone who tasted my food said "Oh my God" which is definitely the measure of a well-prepared dish! The chicken was super tender and juicy, and the crust was absolutely perfect. The potatoes were crispy and almost burned on the outside but tender on the inside, another thing I love! The veggies were perfectly cooked zucchinis and carrots, bursting with flavor and freshness. It just so happens that my idea of a perfect meal is a super-fresh but simple veggie side, a yummy starch, and a perfectly prepared chicken, so I was in foodie heaven. Did I mention everything was perfectly cooked? Oh yeah, I think I did. My dad had the duck salad, which looked like it had pecans and strawberries in it, and I know he likes it because when the lovely server came to our table, she said, "I know what you're ordering!" because apparently he eats the duck salad every time. He raved about it, but I was too engrossed in my own meal to weigh in on his. The service was impeccable. This was especially impressive because the talented and friendly woman serving us was managing the whole room by herself and didn't miss a beat. All I can say is wow. Wow. All my special occasions will be held at this place for a while until I find my next restaurant to fawn over. Yum yum! Mimosas tomorrow! $2.00 on Sundays! The chefs here capture that elusive alchemy that happens when great ingredients are combined with a true passion for food. It's hard to attain, difficult to describe, and rare to find. There's love in the food and you can taste it. They're the kind of chefs who inspire foodies like me to try to capture that essence in the meals we prepare at home for the people we care about. And I'll definitely be trying to re-create their dishes... the highest form of flattery. P.S. Everything about the Fountain Cafe was superb. A friend and I came for lunch around Christmas and we thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the meal and the restaurant. The restaurant is very small with limited seating but is very inviting and has interesting art work on the walls. We both had the Wild Boar Sloppy Joe and the clam chowder on the side. It was a great deal- $11 for the sandwich and chowder and I could only eat half of each. The sloppy joe was every bit as delicious as another wild boar sloppy joe I've had the pleasure of eating in Seattle which is my favorite one. Fountain Cafe is giving that one a run for its money and is also cheaper. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake (torte?) with fresh raspberries and raspberry sauce and whipped cream. Everything was perfect and we were very full. Service was friendly. The only thing I could think of as an improvement would be to offer more than one beer on tap. I had the Port Townsend Brewery IPA which was the only option. The beer was good but I would have liked to have had more than one choice for a beer on tap. They seem to have a wide selection of wine. It's nice that they support other local businesses. The Fountain Cafe is truly a gem! read more

Food was fantastic! I was really surprised at how scrumptious the black bean cakes were. Usually the vegetarian option is an afterthought but this was just plain yum. Crunchy on the outside, warm and velvety on the inside. I tried to save half for the next days lunch but snarfed it after we got home and were watching a DVD. My bf had the fresh fish special - coconut crusted halibut on risotto. He normally wouldn't order this but after seeing it go by to another table he changed his mind. It was funny watching him devour it cuz he kept muttering under his breath about how surprisingly good it was. And I gotta say, the chef with the little flower tucked behind his ear was awful cute. As an aside, I notice that the first review shown is a partial review from an unhappy diner - this despite the numerous glowing posts. My sister claimed that Yelp did this on purpose when restaurants refused to advertise with Yelp. I thought she was being paranoid until we went to a wine bar in Los Angeles and she casually asked the proprietor if he had heard of that happening. I was stunned when he confirmed this first hand. The Fountain Cafe is why I use Yelp. Tucked away on a back street in Port Townsend, most people traveling through would probably miss this gem. Parking on the adjacent hill was a bit of a challenge, but once you get inside you'll find a cozy, artsy bistro with a menu as unique and vibrant as the decor itself. Truly, its a foodie's paradise. Our late lunch began with a cup of New England clam chowder. If you tire of over-salted chowders, theirs is like a breath of fresh air (though it is considered impolite to breath chowder) and allowed for uninhibited enjoyment of the creamy, oregano-rich broth. For main dishes, my wife ordered the house salad with homemade Gorgonzola dressing, which she praised throughout the entire meal. I immediately opted for the wild boar sloppy joe after learning from the server that the boar was not only *wild* but *Hawaiian*. Hawaiian wild boar sloppy joe, served on a bed of spinach. How could I say no? More than just a culinary novelty, the sandwich was incredibly tasty. I would have a tough time not re-ordering this the next time I came. The Irish creme brulee, delicious but not at all cloying, served as a highly-recommended dessert. In summary, it's safe to say my wife and I have yet another reason to return to the enchanting land that is the Olympic Peninsula. read more

Before heading out of town, my last Port Townsend meal was the Hawaiian boar sloppy joe with a cup of clam chowder. Absolutely fantastic! There were so many delicious-sounding things on the menu I wanted to try, but I feel good about the decision I made. :) I always receive great service in town, but the two folks working here were exceptional. Very friendly, and talked to us about their time in our home town of Portland. They felt more like friends than service providers by the end of our meal. Hard to imagine there being a better restaurant in Pt. Townsend. Charming, but not trying too hard. Immaculate presentation, but laid-back. Delicious, but rather moderately priced. Had the fried oysters and chicken curry salad for lunch. In fact, I usually have the pan-fried oysters which I could eat all day like bon-bons. They never disappoint. Meanwhile, the only problem with the curry is that there wasn't enough of it, although technically, it was a shared plate. Next time, there will be none of that. Also, if you are so inclined: Get there early, park in front and sit by the window. Proceed to watch your dogs watch you eat. It's good for them to lose a round every once in awhile, it keeps them grateful. Sorry puppies, today there will be no dog-bag. read more

My wife and I were visiting Port Townsend during a little getaway. A good friend of mine is with the Chamber of Commerce and met us for dinner that night. My wife is unable to eat seafood, so that limits our choices. Thankfully, my friend picked the perfect place. The cafe is an intimate space that is perfect for a date or night with friends. The owner, Nick, and his staff were attentive and great to talk to. The moment I looked over the menu, I knew that no matter what I chose, I was in for an experience. After selecting a nice Pinot Gris, we ordered the appetizer Mediterranean. It's described as "Fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil served with balsamic reduction, extra virgin olive oil, olive tapenade, and grilled crostini." While some would think of this as a fancy bruchetta, it was anything but. The olive tapenade was an amazing addition giving the dish a beautiful finish on the palate. I was unable to resist my urge to try the Mushroom risotto. My wife had the Moroccan Chicken and our friend had the Chicken Marsala. Damn. With the movement to buying from local farmers, you could taste the freshness in each bite. I was truly impressed with the Chicken Marsala since it is a dish I'm very familiar with. Most versions have a runnier wine sauce. But here, it was more of a reduction where the wine was noticeable, but not overbearing. Which allowed all the ingredients to have their moment. All the dishes at the table were ones I would recommend. If I had a complaint about the meal, its that we had zero room for dessert. I will make another trip back just for the warm gingerbread. Overall, the check worked out to what I expected for 3 meals with wine and an appetizer. Would I go back? Absolutely! Should you go? Absolutely! read more

The lamb street tacos were overwhelmed by tzatziki dressing, though I think if you ask the server to back off the dressing to a drizzle they would be pretty good. Three words: aglio e olio. Translation: roasted garlic, more chopped garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, pasta! With Parmesan cheese on top. What more do I need in life than what's in that pasta bowl? The food is a little expensive. But not chintzy. The Fountain Cafe serves up fresh ingredients in its dishes and doesn't skimp on them. My husband's seafood salad from the specials board was $18, and it featured big juicy shrimps flavoured with saffron, lots of ripe strawberries, and big slices of Brie cheese. The seating leaves a little to be desired - the tables are crowded and the people seated next to us seemed to be having a very long and loud long lost reunion. On the other hand, it's cozy and warm, there's art on the walls, and I get a strange feeling of reassurance when I have to go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. Just another quirk of the layout of an established place in an old building. A charming view of street we had from our window table too. A fabulous neighbourhood restaurant; I'd suggest doing lunch if you're on a tighter budget. read more

PHENOMENAL MEAL. Everything was so delicious!!! Ice tea was fresh. The french bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. The herbed butter was great. But the star of the show was the Chicken Marsala! It was TO. DIE. FOR. I can't express how delicious this entree was. The chicken was "like butter". The sauce was creamy and made with sweet Marsala wine and came with mushrooms and cranberries. I wish I would have asked HOW?
