Really cute little place in historic Port Townsend. Their lunch menu runs the gamut of soups and sandwiches. They also have an excellent wine and craft beer selection. Exceptional. Both my wife are vegan and heard this restaurant could accommodate. They recommended we order the mushroom risotto and the Ali E Olo (both without cheese). It was some of the best Italian food we've ever had. We'll likely be back on our next visit. read more

Food here was yummy. Prices are ever so slightly high, but the atmosphere and service makes up for the difference. I think the best thing about this place is that it stays open later than many of the other eateries. We ordered about 5 dishes and we gobbled everything up. Really great little spot. We popped in on a Monday night (hard to find dinner house is open on Mondays) as we were visiting Port Townsend for my birthday. It's a small place, only a few tables and they were full. But, they were able to give us a reservation for about an hour and a half later so we returned and enjoyed our dinner! read more

It's a stretch to call this "near Seattle" but Port Townsend is number one on our list of favorite day-trip destinations. If you're there at DINNERTIME, go to the Fountain Cafe. In a kitchen that is almost certainly smaller than yours, a genius of a woman turns out simply gorgeous meals for up to 40 people... that's about as many as the restaurant holds when it's full, and it often is. However, if you're there at LUNCHTIME, consider the Fountain but know that it might not be perfect. Because our muse, that incredible dark-haired siren of the saute pan, is often not there at lunchtime, and the person trying to fill her apron just isn't as amazing a cook as she is. The menu changes seasonally but there will always be something that tickles you, unless you're a complete food curmudgeon. They have an amazing range, too, from veggie food (maybe even vegan most of the time; I'm a die-hard carnivore so I'm not 100% sure) to chicken to beef and lamb to many seafood choices. They tend towards European style food (French/Italian/Greek) but more Americanized portions (which will seem just right after a windy day walking for miles on the beach). They have a good selection of wines at fair prices and the coffee's pretty good according to those in my party who usually imbibe the shaky stuff. The tables have different stuff under the glass each time we go, and they change the art on the walls too... they all appear to be local artists and I've liked quite a bit of what I've seen there. This really is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. Period. Oh, and the restroom is small and funky (but CLEAN -- funky in a GOOD way!) and right in the walkway between the kitchen and the storage room/walk-in. That means it's nice and warm in there. :-) There are weird metal things on the wall that I'm afraid of. In my silly mind, they look like giant battery terminals, ready to electrocute. Obviously they are not!! I think I should drink more wine. The Fountain Cafe also passes muster with the small fry. Just please be fair to those trying to have romantic dinners on the weekend -- don't bring your kids if they're going to be super-whiny or loud... it's a small room. If they're going to behave, they'll like the food and the servers will be really nice to them. :-) Groups are also welcome but you might want to call ahead to make sure things will work out if there's a lot of you. read more

We have been trying to eat at this restaurant for 2 years. The pandemic caused us to show up multiple times when it was closed. Finally we made it and got a table, because they require reservations; something we didn't understand but now know. Why would you need reservations for a cafe? They only have 9 tables! The chef is phenomenal and the food was outstanding. No wonder they want reservations. We can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu. We are used to menus and food from SF Bay Area so we are pretty picky ; I'll admit it. This place is one of the best places we've eaten at in Port Townsend. I hate to downplay this popular restaurant, but our recent dining experience at the Fountain Cafe was sub-par at best. In a word: overrated. World's best chowder? I think not...the turkey reuben tasted putrid (sour like turkey that's been left in the fridge for too long)...and the curry chicken salad was runny and lacking flavor. The service was amongst PT's worst and an escalation to the owner Nick provided little recourse. Take your business elsewhere the next time you're in Port Townsend. read more

I've eaten at this restaurant twice (lunches) while visiting Port Townsend, and this place is GREAT! Everyone in our group loved the food, selection and prices. A must try while visiting the cute town. The food is quite wide ranging, spanning from sandwiches/salads to pasta dishes and beyond. Many dishes have a twist that elevates the flavour and makes your mouth water for more. There's also daily specials and a rotating aspect that favors the local cuisine and items in season. Sounds dumb, but the herb/salted butter that comes with bread is fantastic. The space is relatively smaller and can get busy on weekends, so would recommend calling for a reservation or being ok to wait a few minutes. read more

Food and service are fabulous! Small place with around 10 tables is cozy and intimate. Food was amazing from start to finish. Great selection on wine list. Baked oyster appetizer was very tasty and I loved the Kale Caesar (dressing was perfection). Had the shrimp scampi pasta and Scotch Fettucini (smoke salmon was great). One of the best meals we have had .. fresh and flavorful. The service was amazing , the portions splittable for retirees and the gingerbread dessert out of this world. Plus a friendly atmosphere without being over the top .. simple single tulips at each table gave a welcoming feel . We liked it so much we are going back tomorrow night ! There's lots of good food in quaint little PT, but this place is unique and worth a visit. The atmosphere is romantic, cozy, and hip without pretentiousness. You can tell that the owner has an aesthetic eye. The food is locally sourced, fresh, and fun. The flavors are complex without being over-complicated. We tried the clam and mussel appetizer, which will be a repeat-order for our next visit...they know how to prepare seafood here. No rubbery mussels like you'll find in many NW restaurants. The chef here obviously worships garlic, which I can relate to. The wine list is decent...and the desserts are delicious. The portions are large, 4 people could easily share a dessert and be more than satisfied. Friendly attentive service. Great for date nights. read more

So there we are waiting for the ferry and starving so we bring up the fantastic yelp monocle and see the fountain cafe. I walked into this cafe LOOKING for something wrong because no way does it have such great reviews. Also the prices on the menu were pretty pricey. I wanted to not like this place... It was amazing! My group ordered 4 different entrees and every one of them was great. Even the bread was good. Made locally and delivered fresh. Seriously.. One of my favorite restaurants when visiting family in Port Townsend. Boo to me being there at 11am and Fountain Cafe not opening until 11:30am! Ah well, not your fault, dear Cafe. Really quaint joint with impeccable service. We arrived just after a very large group, and our server rushed our order in before the group's order so we wouldn't have to wait forever. Wow. Every time. Amazing. Sex on a plate. Not the one night stand kind, the kind you wanna come back for because it is sooooo good. I ordered the duck, which I knew I would do based on my first experience here last year. And I had garlic prawns too. The Dreaming Tree Dave Matthews wine (red blend) was perfect for me and the meal. The whole experience, the other customers, the staff and owners, the music, every little touch - fantastic. Foodie, gourmet, fancy, wholesome, amazing - whatever you want to call it - damn, this place rocks my socks off. I deserve an amazingly fantastic and high quality meal that hits every sensory point and this place hit all the marks. I could smell it before it came out, the music and wine enticed me, and the presentation made me want it, but nothing left me wanting - I got everything I came for and more. The owner took my order and was super personable and understood my needs (smaller portions, gluten free, amazing). It's built in to the place. Tiny eatery with extensive menu and decent wine list. Good service. I had the lamb rack with good veg sides, but the Moroccan flavours were way too subtle. My dining partner did NOT like The Chipotle entree. The olive starter was tilted towards green olives, and the baguette wasn't the best. We found the service to be outstanding as they met and exceeded my daughters needs for milk free preparation. The food also held up to the reviews and was very attractivly presented. This is my favorite restaurant in the world. I have been coming for over a decade and it seems to get better every time I visit. My husband said he had what may have been the best meal of his life: the halibut and pesto special with Mediterranean risotto. I had a orange and saffron infused broth with seafood and it was succulent and fresh. Every time I'm in port Townsend I come. For all the years we lived in Port Townsend and have come back to visit the Fountain Cafe was barely on my radar. I knew it existed and think I went there once or twice over the years. When looking for some place to get takeout food for dinner the other night my husband suggested Fountain Cafe. I'm so glad he did because we sat down to a yummy dinner. We shared a green salad and had a pasta dish and mushroom risotto. I also ate half of a bread pudding (and finished the rest the next day). Many items on the menu looked good, so looking forward to trying more next time we're in town. read more

Amazing little place for lunch that serves wine and beer. Closes at 3 so keep that in mind. Beth was very helpful with suggestions and took great care of us. I had the prawn and mushroom sandwich which was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their food .. the mushroom sandwich, veggie burger, and ABC sandwich. The clam chowder was delicious. The soup of the day was a red pepper bisque...I was not a fan. For a starter ..we got the garlic brie with crostini. It had roasted chunks of garlic and a salsa fresca and it was great. Beth brought out more crostini so we could enjoy more of the garlic. I highly recommend this place. read more

Great Experience Wonderful Food. I could probably stop there. My then fiancé' and I traveled to Port Townsend for Valentine's Day. I had heard good things and made a reservation (about 2 weeks out and you need one as it was full all night. It is a charming restaurant although in winter a table by the door could be problematic as gusts of cold sweep in. Fortunately, we had a table away from the door. The waiter was knowledgeable about their menu, friendly and didn't steer us wrong. We started with appetizer of their oysters. Large, fresh fried oysters that weren't greasy either. We were fans. The 'side' or house salad was great. Not a traditional boring drape fare. I recommend the gorgonzola dressing although the Tahini was also tangy and refreshing. I ordered off the menu. The Paella. It was good but didn't have that bottom crust that would have made it amazing. I would probably go on more about it but as normal my wife chose the better dish at dinner. She had the special which was a fig and gorgonzola polenta and duck breast with a cherry glaze. Now, I stayed away because I normally can't stand fruit in my main entrée as often too sweet. They did an excellent job. Duck was cooked perfectly, the polenta was soft and couldn't stop eating. Well until my wife gave me a look that said back off her dinner. It was right balance of savory and sweet. It was the perfect Valentine's dinner. We will be back next time in Port Townsend read more

We were looking for some lunch last week and yelp is usually a good help in finding a place. We had the options of going to this one or the one a little further down the road, but my husband liked the style of this one better, so in we went. The decor is nice, the place is small and homey. It was super hot outside, so coming into the restaurant, it was nice and a bit colder at first, but sitting there after a while, it got really hot in there. We really sweated and that is not nice during a meal, so a AC window/wall or maybe just a portable unit seems necessary to keep the place comfortable during hot summer days. The server we had was fast and friendly and the menu looked great. My husband had a chicken sandwich and I tried the salmon sandwich. My hubby was happy, nothing to write home about, but good. I was pretty disappointed in mine. The taste was there, the sauce was delicious, the bun lightly crispy, but the salmon patty? Oh no! It looked like the poor fish went through the blender with some other ingredients, it was mushy and just not appealing at all. I expected a real piece of salmon on the burger, we are on the coast? I have to admit, even the salmon burger patties at Trader Joe's are better, not necessarily the taste, but the consistency. The salmon paste just squirted out from all sides and it also looked like it was pre-made (cooked earlier and just reheated). Just a bummer I think there is potential and with all the good reviews, I might have just picked the wrong item of the menu. read more

Came for birthday supper! Lovely great-northwest atmosphere and cuisine. Delicious appetizers and entrees. Portions are generous. We had the seafood which was harvested locally and prepared in predominately latin in flavor. The dessert menu looked wonderful, but we were so satisfied that more food was out of the question. I really can't say enough good things about this place. We tried to get in last night without reservations, but their place holds up to, maybe 25 people. They took our name for tonight and later called us with a table but we already had an order. When we showed up tonight we had one of the best tables! Our food was incredible. My husband had duck and I had prawns with ravioli. My husband found the chef after dinner and told her that it wasn't just the best duck he had ever had, it was the best food! read more

We stayed in port Townsend for three nights. We ate at the fountain cafe our second night and had a wonderful dinner. The food was some of the best we have ever had and the vibe was wonderful. The staff was friendly and service was second to none. We had such a wonderful experience we went back the third night somewhat afraid it wouldn't be as good two nights in a row. So happy to say that didn't happen. The fountain cafe surpassed our expectations a second night in a row We also met the owner that was a treat. I can't say enough for this restaurant.
