This cafe has a nice, small space a block from the main commercial street in Port Townsend. I had the lamb burger and the meat was flavorful and well spiced. The bun was bland and too big for the burger, and the lettuce and tomatoes were ho-hum, but the lamb was good enough to make up for it. The sandwiches come with a side of soup of the day, clam chowder, or salad, and I had the carrot-coconut-ginger, which was quite good. Wifey had the mushroom melt, which she enjoyed, and the chowder. The chowder was thinner than you might be expecting but she thought it was decent. Overall this is a good option for lunch in town. Prices are higher than is justified but it's a dependable meal. The service was slow and a little weird; the waitress seemed perturbed for some reason. Everybody else on here seems to have had warm service so I expect ours might have been an outlier. read more

We ate here twice during our stay at Fort Worden. Had the chipotle prawns and mushroom risotto the first night. Second day was a late lunch early dinner so we shared a kale Caesar salad, baguette with warm olives, stuffed mushrooms and clams in a delicious broth. I enjoyed the little slices of bread and herb butter. Small, cozy spot. Fresh, well prepared food at reasonable prices. Visiting PT for the first time and looking for a good dessert as I ate too much lunch. Unfortunately they don't have a webpage, so I had to go in and find out. As I entered the quaint diner (7:15pm-ish, Tuesday evening), I found everyone starring at me because there was no direction of whether I should seat myself or wait. So, I waited and waited and waited. Finally I was acknowledged by a someone back at the kitchen who told me to sit wherever I'd like. I then waited for 10 minutes to be acknowledged at my table (there's only 10-ish tables in the whole place), even though the 1 server had been to the dining room plenty of times. I started putting my coat on to leave and as I picked up my purse she came over to me. Later I over-heard her compensate another table their drinks for wait time. It appeared the 1 server could not handle the entire dining room. In the end, the desert menu wasn't anything I was craving, but I had waited so long that I didn't want to go somewhere else and eat even later in the evening. Pros: - A good mix of interesting and standard menu choices (Frog Legs, Caesar Salad, Duck, Salmon) - Food tasted Good! Decieded to give this place a try for my last night out in Ptown after seeing the 100 plus reviews on hear talking up the place. We decided to try out the steak special and were far from impressed. There was little to no flavor and both of our steaks where full of gristle the part that had the most flavor probably had to be the tomato's that where used for decoration. Secondly they serve you water without any ice and it was a warm day for spring so a luke warm glass of water was not what I was looking for. One of the tables had enough and actually had to ask to get some ice and they brought it in one cup instead of filling all the glasses with ice. Overall for the price paid which was just shy of $40 a plate I really felt like I got the shorter end of the stick. Either way if im going to pay a little more for a steak it better have a little flavor, its to bad I could of had better luck with some type of bar food and still had some money left over, dont plan on returning to this place. FYI if you do consider taking the risk check the menu in the window before you head in, they have limited choices and they tend to be a little over priced read more

I had one of the best dining experiences of my life here last week. I was in Washington State visiting for the holidays and a local friend took us to this FOODIE HAVEN. The atmosphere was intimate, yet elegant and very conducive to conversation. All their seafood and produce is locally grown and/or caught. The owner is young, hip, and full of helpful suggestions and information about everything they serve. We started off with crispy fried oysters and then shared a seared ahi salad with some of the freshest, most delicious ingredients imaginable. I was a bit oyster-crazy so for an entree, I had a linguine draped with oysters, eggplant, capers, and parmesan. Amazing. Everyone else's dishes were equally delicious. The wine selection was also unbeatable and this place has my FULL endorsement. Anytime I'm ever in Washington State again, I will be sure to return here!!! read more

I had my baby asleep in the stroller and couldn't go up the stairs in the front. Then I parked the stroller beside the bench outside and came in to ask if I can order Takeouts. Beth smiled and said yes kindly and brought me the menu that I can look at outside. Then my daughter woke up and I ended up to come inside, my stroller folded up pretty compact so I could fit in the space between the window and the chair. My daughter was mostly cranky and cried and screamed couple times, I felt bad for the customers and the cafe, but Beth and the other customers were generous and friendly, it helped me a lot. Their clam chowder and mushroom melt sandwich were excellent! Thank you for being kind to us, I was treated poorly at the two stores in a row before I came here. Silverwater cafe and the garden deco store "The Perfect Season" on Water street weren't nice at all. Not everyone is nice for the single mom with the baby. I needed the warm experience at this cafe. Totally unimpressed. They did not have my reservation when we showed up but sat us anyway. Plain tap water- no ice. Fail. Sourdough bread was meh. Salad with Gorgonzola dressing was good. My chicken Marsala was too sweet. I didn't care for it. (Lobster Shop in Tacoma is the best). My wife's Prawn Diablo did not have any taste at all even with lots of salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese added. Our dessert, Key Lime pie, was excellent. A very cute and delicious lunch spot with super service. It's priced right and perfect for any occasion.

This is the kind of funky, unpretentious place that you will either love or miss its charm completely. On the downside, it is tiny; if you hit it during the dinner rush, you will probably find it to be very noisy and a bit on the slow side due to the small kitchen and limited waitstaff. They also only take reservations for parties of 5 or more, so you may well find yourself waiting in the cramped entryway for a table. But there are a number of great upsides for those who are in no rush and don't mind the cozy, bustling atmosphere. The food is excellent, with a number of rich Italian-inspired dishes and many dishes featuring delicious Northwest shellfish. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal to the last bite. There is a modest wine list with samplings from around the world. The servers were friendly, though they seemed to be pulled in several directions simulaneously. My Angel prawns (prawns with angel hair pasta and fresh vegetables in an Asian-inspired broth) were very tasty, though I would suggest that they remove the tails from the prawns... I don't think I've ever had prawns in pasta before that still had the tails on them?! It was a bit distracting. In hindsight, I would not have chosen this place for a dinner with four senior citizens during peak Saturday dinner hours. They had trouble hearing each other across the table (ok, even I had trouble sometimes!), and my dad felt that the chairs were "very uncomfortable". I wouldn't hesitate to return here with friends sometime, though. read more

We wandered in after a long day of walking based solely on a review of this quaint cafe that simply read "sex on a plate." The reviewer captured the level of deliciousness precisely! The designation "cafe" in the name might imply small, Americana or cheap. Let me assure you that small is accurate but in terms of a traditional American cafe it's absolutely not. The place has an "off boulevard" bistro in Paris. The kind of gem locals will never tell you about so they don't have to complete with the tourist crowd and keep the place for themselves. Wait staff professional and attentive but in a profoundly gracious and low key manner. Everything about our meal was perfectly prepared and 100% delicious. The lamb meatballs and Penne was amazing. This came tossed in a sinfully crafted tomato sauce that was a taste explosion in the mouth. Seriously it was amazing like no souse has a right to be! My wife devoured the rack of lamb which comes finished in a Moroccan spiced sauce that was to die for. (She's ok, not dead, but she was in heaven!) Deserts were equally outstanding. Tiramisu was top notch and crème brûlée an excellent rendition of the classic. Can confirm that if you love intimate places that hand craft gastro-magic you will absolutely love the Fountain Cafe'! PT is a great destination to visit, particularly in the shoulder seasons before the tourists attack. Fountain is one of those gems that you have to search out, but is worth the search. A small venue (I think we saw that the Fire Marshall says total capacity is 40-something; no idea where they'd fit!). The one server was doing a yeoman's job of keeping up with the full dining room. We were there for lunch and enjoyed every bite! We both had the clam chowder, and it was very good (to date my favorite is from Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor - sorry). I had the Caprese sandwich, which was basically a Caprese salad (mozzarella and tomato) between bread. We'll be back!! read more

Last night's dinner at the super artsy Fountain Cafe consisted of a shared appetizer of mussels and clams in pesto based broth, prawns on spinach as well as roasted walnut and Gorgonzola penne. The mussels and clams were delicious, very delicate in a tasty broth that wasn't too overwhelming as I feel pesto can sometimes be. Warm bread with herb butter was served on the side: any restaurant serving warm bread gets extra points in my book! I didn't taste the appetizer of prawns on spinach, but my dinner companion seemed to enjoy it! My choice of roasted walnut and Gorgonzola pasta was exactly how it was described on the menu, and they were right: the sauce is rich. Half a portion of this, otherwise delicious, dish would've been more than enough for me. Attentive service, nice to finally get water without ice (!), prices are reasonable and there's a nice wine and beer selection. The local Chardonnay was mediocre. The Port Townsend Golden beer, however, was a pleasant surprise. Living in Oregon we've been tasting lots of micro brews which are a tad on the heavy side for my taste. Two stars because it was cute and the two servers smiled. The service wasn't bad... Just not great. The sauces on our two pasta dishes overpowered the food. Too much citrus and acid flavor; so much that it masked the taste of the vegetables, ginger and prawns in my entree. I thought I'd take home the entree to rehabilitate it for lunch tomorrow. I asked the server to box it up. That never happened and asking for the mediocre dish was just not worth the effort. We're disappointed. We were looking for a place to take out of town friends who visit. There are lots of restaurants in Port Townsend. We're sure to find a gem. read more

Quaint (read: small) little cafe in a great location in Port Townsend. We spent the first 10 minutes or so marveling at the eclectic decor, then focusing on the awesome menu! We kicked off our meal with the mussels and clams in the pesto Chardonnay sauce. Awesome, super fresh, and delicious! It was served with fresh bread and pesto butter, also awesome. For our mains we had the scotch fettuccini and a roast beef sandwich. First, the pasta. Is there an emoji or something that can demonstrate the absolute delight found in a fantastic, well balanced dish? Because I don't have words. Everyone should order it. Immediately. The sandwich was great, as well. Great flavor, well balanced with gooey mozzarella and a light horseradish sauce. read more

We went back twice over the weekend. OK, I made my wife go back because we could get the gingerbread because we were completely stuffed. Smaller portions mean I can get dessert! The 1st night we split a salad, which was delicious. We then had pasta dishes. Not so great, but still good. Mine was a salmon dish and my wife's had tomatoes (I wasn't paying much attention). They were too big and we couldn't finish them or get dessert!! The 2nd night I learned, so it was the duck salad and split the halibut entree with the wife. Both dishes were great! Great, small cafe atmosphere where you can easily dress up for a fancy and intimate dinner or feel just as comfortable going casual (I was the latter, very happily passing time here waiting for friends to get into town). Quick seating and prompt, friendly service. The entire menu looked interesting and delicious from the appetizers to the desserts, and including the specials (on my visit, an oyster app and a roasted duck breast concoction). Features local seafood proudly, but also a number of options for vegetarians. A decent wine and beer selection as well. I ordered a wild mushroom (local) risotto and an Australian Viognier. The wine came quickly with fresh bread and a good herb butter while I waited for the entree. The risotto was fantastic! Properly spiced and the rice was just right. My only complaint is that most of the menu items felt just a little bit overpriced. This is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5--atmosphere and food were both terrific. Apps $9-16, Entrees $16-30. The risotto was fairly reasonable at the $16 end of the entree spectrum. However, they were asking $29 for a chioppino. I have no doubt based on my experience that the seafood would have been fresh and local and would be delicious, but when you're dining practically on the docks (which should cut out the middleman and bring down prices) and the dish has its origins as a fisherman's stew I would be happier seeing a price in the low 20s, or that at $29 the dish would be enough to fill up two people with a shared appetizer. This may be the case, but I didn't have a 2nd to try out the theory on this trip. =) That said, I really enjoyed my meal and the next time I am in Port Townsend I will definitely go back and treat myself to a nice dinner! read more

I had the Fried Oysters for an app...they are huge and delicious. Breading a bit thick and crunchy...but how could I complain about that? Delicious. Cioppino for dinner and it was great. Unique food, and each member of our party enjoyed his or her meal. Friends took us there, so we didn't review the ratings before going, but we were certainly not disappointed. Yes, its that good. This is a tiny space, one street back from the main waterfront in Port Townsend. The food was simply excellent. I had a pasta dish (special menu) with ground lamb, chèvre, kale, and a reduction that was incredible. Garlic, wine, fennel, shallots, a nutty oil of some sort....dear lord, it was heaven. It was a light sauce over perfect pasta, and fresh green (perfectly blanched) kale. I ordered a glass of the house red to go with my dish. I like asking for the 'house' wine. Lets you know where a place has their heart. Their house wine was local, and fantastic. Did I mention that they had a 'kids' menu, and my 8 year old LOVED here food as well? Not a place for young kids to be sure, but lots of good for the preteens. My veg wife had nothing but praises. Boom. That happened. And I loved it. read more

My husband really enjoyed the special of the day - a Ruben with a Chipotle style sauce which just made the sandwich amazing! I had the mushroom melt w/ chicken, spinach and brie which was tasty, but I enjoyed my husband's more. We both enjoyed the clam chowder. The atmosphere very rustic and romantic. There does not appear to be any handicap access that we saw, so it could be a challenge with the steps outside of this beautiful old turn of the century building for some to get in and out of. The service is great, the staff is very helpful and can offer great suggestions/recommendations. Parking is on the street, so be prepared on a busy weekend to enjoy a nice walk depending on where you find a space. read more

My mother and I decided to visit Port Townsend on a whim and ended up at this cute little restaurant. We were pleased with the aesthetic of this quaint cafe. The food was phenomenal, we ordered shrimp and crab stuffed mushrooms (zesty lemon flavor; weird combo, but it was refreshing), curry chicken salad, and lamb tacos. To top this smorgasbord of flavors we added key lime pie (homemade), this was not the highlight of the meal, but worth a mention! I would recommend this place for anyone with an eclectic palate.
