As we were leaving two more people showed up for to go orders. That isn't much traffic. Not a very nice feeling, very cavernous and no vibe. Coffee terrible, very brackish and couldn't finish. Salmon benedict very small, but tasty. Tiny portion of roasted and unseasoned potatoes. Pulled pork breakfast sandwich OK, but nothing special. Also the type of register that if you are paying by credit card makes you add tip upfront, which I hate because if I don't tip are they going to treat me badly and if I do tip and the service is bad I have no recourse. Need to carry cash. Lots of staff at least 6 people and yet it took some time for our food to arrive. No reason to go back. read more

Aw man, I just ate (i was starving and had nothing else) the burger, on GF bread. It tasted like something I made myself at home while drunk. It had an overpowering metric ton of smoked paprika, yet was also bland and crumbly (I got the gluten free bread, u have to cut it some slack... but even the meat was crumbling, like it was a loaf mixed with something, it was all pretty flavorless and falling apart in one giant mess). I ditched the salad to use the dressing cup on the burger to both make it taste like something, anything, and help mask the paprika. Only reviewing the burgers as they are the only thing we ordered since they didn't have fries. How can a burger have no kind of sauce? Luckily, we had a sauce leftover from another restaurant that serves spicy chicken sandwiches. The meat on my patty was dry like sand. My husband's was fine and he liked his. Otherwise this would have been a 1 star review. Was very disappointed, since I was craving a burger. Why he didn't order from Oinkster, I don't know. He likes trying new places. Just exactly what I imagine from a California organic café. Choices are very fresh. You can't get fries, but once you taste the salad, you don't even care! I had the grass fed burger and loved it. My iced chai was an excellent addition. I would have tried dessert, but after reading what others have said, I'm glad they were mostly out. Have to take off a star for the price. We ordered 2 kids' meals and 3 adult entrées and it cost over $80!! I find that exorbitant for a café where you sit on a bench and order at the counter. For this reason, I doubt I'll return. There are so many options for this fare that are not as pricey. You wouldn't think local products would be so expensive. read more

After a months long dry spell, I just had my first Spring Greens of 2017 and it was everything I remembered...hazelnuts, gorgeous watermelon radishes and egg. Everything I ordered from this place was absolutely DELICIOUS!!! I AM SHOCKED! I got the chimichurri steak sandwich on ciabatta bread with a side salad. They put a full piece of steak on the sandwich. At fjrst2 I was scared thinkin I wouldn't be able to bit into the steak. HOWEVER, it was super tender. The bread was perfection! Even the dressing for the side salad was amazingly tasty. I think the dressing was made in house because I have never tasted anything like it before abd yet the ingredients tasted simple and well blended. I am going back to this place. Light, healthy, intimate, and refreshing. That's Four Cafe in a nutshell. Guaranteed if I ate here every day my weight would start to dwindle at a rapid pace (unless I sneaked in the glorious brownie at the front), but not because I was being deprived of life's bounty, but because Four Cafe has discovered the perfect balance of proportions, flavors and freshness. It's as if everything came from a garden in the back, stripped straight from the earth, but sans morsels of dirt. Only a baby in the Eagle Rock dining scene, Four Cafe is already walking on its own! The food and the service were top notch, not a glitch that I could see. I went for the smoked albacore salad (half) and it was minimalist in presentation but packed a powerful palate punch. The grapefruit was a nice touch. I also decided to brave their house made natural sodas (grapefruit also) and boy, was that a treat! Not sugary like most bottled variety, but tart and carbonated in all the right places. Total for the salad and soda was about $13. The brownie was a generous, oeey gooey gift from the owners...just because! I saw someone else walk out with a similar treat as well (their dessert list is pretty enticing). Four Cafe is truly a family affair, from crafting the interior to manning the front to providing delicious fare for Eagle Rockians and beyond. Came here on a Sunday mooning craving salad, unfortunately the full menu is not available until 11AM so we decided to try their brunch items. Parking was easy to find, although it can be harder other days. Since it's Sunday, metered parking is free! Breakfast Burrito - Decided to add bacon and opted for the salad side. Solid breakfast burrito, would definitely fill you up. Comes with a homemade salsa/hot sauce which was flavorful. I wish the scrambled eggs inside the burrito were a bit fluffier; they seemed to be a bit overcooked. Pulled Pork Sandwich - This was the special of the day. The meat was not too dry, but it was a bit oily. We opted for the potato side for this dish. Together, it was quite a filling meal. Overall, solid food and nice flavors. A bit overpriced. There are a lot of vegan options for those who don't eat meat. I probably wouldn't return for breakfast/brunch however, I would definitely return for the salads. read more

Great option for a super-healthy meal, but a few things made this place fall short of 5 stars in my book. I wasn't feeling that hungry so I just opted for a bowl of chicken noodle soup and my friend had the warm fall salad. Hm, should've gone for the salad too, because it was damn good. Warm roasted fall/winter vegetables atop a bed of arugula and spinach, with bits of goat cheese and pecans (or was it walnuts?). You can also add a protein of your choice for a little extra but I thought it was just fine the way it was. I wish the soup had been as good. Nice thick chunky noodles and veggies and chicken, but they'd put WAY too much thyme in there and it was really overpowering. And the broth seemed kinda on the thin side--just not quite as satisfying as I would've liked. The people here are really nice, too. Because of a snafu at the order counter they'd placed our orders late and they asked if we'd like anything from their deli case to munch on while we're waiting, which I thought was great. I went with their steamed kale in spicy peanut sauce and I thought it was pretty darn good. Cold, though, fyi. To be honest, I didn't feel like we were waiting an inordinate amount of time, as our food came out right after they brought us the kale. Their menu's not that extensive but has a decent variety, and they're all about local and in-season, which makes this place extra-special to me. Pretty cool interior, too. This meal epitomizes an unfair exchange. I paid a fairly substantial amount of money and got very little in return. The menu appeared limited and offered lunch foods like salads and sandwiches but we gave it a shot for dinner. He ordered the STEAK SALAD which had romaine, spinach, roasted red & yellow peppers, avocado, corn, jicama, honey jalapeño lime dressing. I thought the portion of steak was a little stingy but as a whole, the salad was good. I loved the flavors and the variety of veggies. On the other hand, my CHOPPED MISO TOFU SALAD was almost all cabbage. I yearned more of the other ingredients:crispy shallots, chives, almonds, miso vinaigrette, and tofu. Unfortunately, the bowl was a never ending under-dressed pile of cabbage that did little but tire my jaws. The STRAWBERRY LIMEADE was homemade strawberry lime, agave, and sparkling water. Looking around, I felt like mine lacked enough of the fruit blend so it tasted primarily of under-sweetened sparking water. The sandwiches look more filling and interesting and I may return to try those. Unfortunately, their salads need extra TLC in both ingredients and flavor. My new neighborhood joint for healthy and tasty food. The best part is the free refills of their amazing homemade sodas (I love the grapefruit + agave + sparkling water). They even asked if I wanted one to go. This made the price worth it. So far, I've had the split pea soup, the living salad, short rib grilled cheese. Everything was not only tasty, but I knew it was quality. My least favorite from this list would be the short rib grilled cheese only because it was on the heavier side (not that I expect short rib grilled cheese to ever be light). I must have forgotten I was in the mood for something light when I entered and then couldn't really finish the sandwich. But, my husband loved it and devoured the rest so I think it was just my mood, not the taste. The service is fast, and it's the type of establishment where you go up, order, get a number, and people serve you. I got a chicken pesto panini and my boyfriend got a turkey cranberry panini and we split them. Both were good, but not anything amazing and nothing I would come back for. The side salad had a variety of greens, which was nice, but just a little too much dressing and nothing else besides greens, not even a single tomato. The self serve water cups are actual regular size glasses, which I appreciated. The interior was cute enough but again nothing special. Blah! Had brunch here with my boyfriend on Sunday and I definitely didn't have a good experience with the food. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito - I felt like I was eating just tortilla - there were some eggs, black beans, avocado and cheese but it was mostly two big pieces of tortilla. Worse of all I paid extra for bacon but there was no bacon at all - I realized it too late so I didn't say anything- didn't want them thinking I ate it or something but I felt ripped off. the roasted potatoes were meh - was under cooked. My boyfriend had the Pulled pork and egg sandwich - it was better than my burrito but the bread was soggy on the bottom. also came with potatoes. I also had an iced coffee which was okay though would have been better if they had liquid sweetener because it was hard to dissolve brown sugar in iced coffee. The service was okay - it wasn't waitress service, you order upfront and they bring you the food - so not much service to speak of. Came here for lunch with my husband for a healthy lunch. Unfortunately we both left feeling sick from all the heaviness of the food. I ordered the BLTA ($13) which substituted the bacon with tempeh. I love this at M cafe, but at Four Cafe, it was just too heavy. Maybe it was the heavy amount of mayonnaise or the fact that the tempeh is drenched in sauce. But I ended up with a heavy, soggy mess. Service was friendly and street parking was easy to find. Seating is first come first service. There are a few outdoor seating areas also if you have 4 legged friends. Four's innovative menu reflects life East of the River- funky, clever & delightful. Yes, I am a fan of the inspired flavor combinations and tweaking of standard menu items, but who wouldn't be? Four offers a variety of raw, vegetarian and yummy, yet "good for you" cuisine. There is also enough items with cheese, butter fat and chocolate to appease the types (my husband) who belong to the Langer's school of eating. The smart informal interior, complete with recycled and re-purposed materials, reminds me of small restaurants such as Environs in Barcelona. The menu is changed on a regular basis, which can upset dinners who have fallen in love with certain items. That is why it is a blessing to have Cory, one of the genial, owners on hand to talk you through what will be your new favorite. read more

The salads were so-so. Steak salad was too bland (had to ask for extra dressing) and chicken salad...not much to comment on. Instead, we all like the side salad that came with the pork sandwich. Iced Jasmine Mint Tea tasted super floral. I do like how we were able to taste the floral part of the tea, but it was a lil too much. The hibiscus honey iced tea wasn't bad. I would drink it, but nothing special really. For dessert, I got a brownie and blueberry cheesecake bar. Brownie was kinda typical, but I really like the blueberry cheesecake square. The food is fresh and all good, whether it's more of a comfort food item like one of their soups or sandwiches, or something healthy like the quinoa or a salad. I really like the picado salad and the chicken chili is excellent once you add some salt and pepper. Also, I love the coconut green tea and the fresh peach gingerade. Only three stars because a lot of things I based my "planing to order" order from Yelp weren't available or even on the menu anymore, and there was a general lack of sense of duty by the guy behind the register. So what happened was as we came in, two older women were at the counter asking a million questions, from "what is that?" as they pointed at items in the case, to "where did the name come from?" and "What sign are you?". After about 15 minutes of this foolery, the guy asked someone else to take our order while he proceeded to oblige the women in continuing to be disrespectful to the growing line of clientele waiting to place their orders. Once I was finally able to place mine, there was some confusion in ordering, and I wound up with a soup instead of a salad as a side. Instead of dealing with the counter again, I just ate the soup, which was ok. It was a corn-coconut milk thing. Not my first choice, if I had had a choice. My main dish was the grilled fish burger. I was able to order it mayonnaise free thank god, because it comes with, you guessed it, mayonnaise, as well as a slaw of some kind. So its basically a mayonnaise sandwich with grilled fish. Anyways, without all that rubbish you are left with bun, fish, and a slice of cheese. That was actually a good sandwich, though I think they should have offered a slice of tomato and some lettuce, possibly a non mayonnaise spread substitute as well. After I no longer had to deal with the counter, service was good, and I was able to get refills on my iced tea hassle free. Im sure they have better days, and I know that my experience was largely the fault of those two inconsiderate women, but some fault does lie with the person behind the counter obliging them, and not making them aware that they were allowing a line to grow behind them, which could have been easy to politely gesture to them to make them aware of the fact. I'll give them another shot one of these days, we will see if they gain or lose stars upon that visit. read more
