The usual shame and dirty looks are replaced with a proprietor who spiritedly encourages you to eat more and more until you cry uncle. Being our first trip, we put a little bit of everything into the pot. The downside is we started to lose track of what we had dropped in. Next visit I would be more strategic. I think I ruined mine with chili oil, so careful with that. Their dumplings are might have been the best I've ever had. The sushi I would skip, but if you're looking for a cheap, generous hot pot or dumplings, I recommend it. I cannot begin to tell you how much my family and I loved this place. My daughter loves hot pots and wanted us to try it out. We decided to go to this one and I'm glad we did! We were presented with fresh vegetables, seafood, meat and mushrooms. We were presented with flavorful sauces, pickled vegetables and roasted peanuts. So fulflling!! It was my first and only night in Provo and I had an absolutely wonderful experience at this small mom and pop shop. The owners were sweet and worked hard to serve all customers. The restaurant itself is a small, long building with a small buffet of meats, veggies, and noodles allowed for endless combinations. The medium spicy broth left me coming back for more and the limitless ice cream freezer helped cool everything down after multiple rounds of delicious hotpot. If I were to say anything is that I hope to see this restaurant grow in terms of sauce selection and buffet variety. My boy took the wife and I here. It's a fave of his. I already had it on my bookmarks given the good ratings it's gotten. I can see why people like it, even though it's not going to end up being a regular place for me. I don't know how the owner would be able to handle the place if it was full. It took most of his time helping the 3 tables with guests. I followed my boys suggestion and we went with the miso base. When we picked our first set of food, I hadn't thought that it would all be cooking together for a while and we'd have to sort out whose food was whose later. Fortunately that didn't become an issue. The food items are all very inexpensive ingredients. That makes sense considering the price point, but I'd prefer to pay more for better ingredients. I did love the lily flower and the poached egg was really nice if it got pulled out with a runny yolk. Some of the other items did not need to be cooked nearly as long as the owner recommended. It was all pretty obvious knowing the ingredients. The dipping sauce works with the food. There is a lot of flavor in the broth. Absolutely my favorite Hot Pot restaurant in Utah! I love the owner, the food, and even the cozy tight knit location. We live in West Jordan but we make the drive any chance we get to eat this yummy, mouth watering delicacy called Hot Pot. I'm probably going to go tonight since I'm getting myself so worked up with this review. The variety, the freshness, and the quality of the ingredients in the self serve ingredient stand is amazing, to top that off you have such wonderful broth to go along with it. I always leave full, satisfied, and happy! For what you pay it's so worth it, I have been to many other hot pot places and nothing compares. I just wish it was closer so I could go more! Great little find! It was the perfect place for lunch on a blustery winter day. The owner was happy and helpful, and more than willing to show you the ropes of hot pot if it's your first time. He kept the buffet clean and stocked with all sorts of delicious ingredients (shitake mushrooms, thin sliced meats, various veggies, three kinds of noodles, meat & fish balls, shrimp and even Spam (which, incidentally, tasted great in our miso hot pot). We got our fill and didn't feel the usual heaviness you get after leaving an all you can eat buffet. But no, this family run business does a great job of holding its own with lots of variety of toppings and FINALLY bringing back dumplings after an absence of what seemed like forever. This is a buffet style hot pot experience. The owner brings you the broth, you can get chicken, spicy, or half and half. Note: spicy is SPICY. Then grab all the toppings you desire and eat to your heart's content. There's even ice cream to close out the meal. They have SOUP DUMPLINGS here! Much to our surprise, they were pretty good given there's not many places you can get soup dumplings in Utah. Pricey but if you're looking for XLB, it just might be worth it for the craving. We're glad we came back to Four Seasons Hot Pot. We were in Provo at BYU and decided to have an early dinner there. It's a hot pot, so it's very timely during this time of year. We had the miso soup as our base soup and added in their plenty of choices of vegetables, fish, shrimps, dim sums. We picked only seafoods but you can get their chicken or beef slices as well. The base already tasted great and the additions of the main ingredients only made it even greater! I missed the owner's familiar whistles while he preps up the ingredients in the kitchen . What is Hot-Pot? - Hot-Pot is a style of Chinese food prepared with a simmering pot of stock at the dining table (think...Chinese fondue). While the hot pot is kept simmering, ingredients are placed into the pot and are cooked at the table. Typical hot pot dishes include thinly sliced meat, leafy vegetables, mushrooms, wontons, tofu, and seafood. The cooked food is usually eaten with a few different dipping sauces that he establishment provides. Summary: Fun and interesting new experience for me. Really nice and helpful owners who will help you navigate the hot-pot landscape. Especially if you have never experienced it before. With that said, I did not feel that the food was above average, or amazing in any specific way. However, the service, experience, and overall value led me to give them a 4-star review. Please note, these are my personal observances, I am by no means an experienced hot pot consumer. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The atmosphere (3 stars) - This interior is a bit run down, and it is VERY warm. I am sure in the winter this would be a plus, but in the heat of the summer, it was a bit overwhelming. With that said, it was clean and well kept. The food (3 stars) - The food is good. Not amazing, but good. They have a hearty selection of meats, vegetables, and carbohydrates to mix and match your "hot-potted" goodies with :). While the selection is broad, I feel that the quality of the meats could be a bit better. Service (4 stars) - The service was exceptional. I REALLY wanted to love this place more than I did. Overall, it's a great for date night or a fun dining experience with friends. Here's what they did right: 1) all you can eat is always a plus somewhere like this. You're not sure what you're gonna like, so sampling a lot of options is always great. 2) the food actually tasted really great after it was cooked. Noodles especially were delicious. 3) super friendly owners/staff. Whenever I had to ask, they were willing to help me what to do next. Here's what could've gone better: 1) even though the staff was friendly, I had no idea what I was doing. No idea how long to cook anything, what to do, what tasted good in which broth. It really needs to be explained or have clear written instructions somewhere. 2) the setting could've used some work. We went on a summer day and it was more hot and muggy in the restaurant than it was outside. Cooking food over hot broth when it's 80 degrees inside the restaurant is a bit rough. Overall, I would definitely go back, but probably when it's winter time. I'll also probably try to go when it's very slow so I can have some more instruction from the staff. Let me start with my story, me and my friends used to eat there 8-9 years ago but then moved to salt lake. Even we know the owner is a very sly Beijing immigrant, food is lame, we still wanted go there again last weekend for friends reunion dinner, our college memory and immigrants empathy--we are originally from Beijing as well. However, we experienced the worst discrimination and worst dining experience United States ever, here. No service for us. even we were the only guests at 5pm Saturday, a little bit early for dinner, but still have to help ourself on everything--asked for sesame sauce but no response, we had to steal some from the counter--that's still fine, since there is no other staff besides this owner, we understood how busy he is. Food was not refilled promptly when only us eating there (from 5pm-6pm) Finally more people (white people) came in after 6pm) then he started to refill the bar, but our stove was out of gas before we were done eating, asked for replacement but he kept us waiting for 20 mins. What was he doing while we were waiting with the raw ingredients and the cold pot? He was brown nosing his honored white people guest, introducing how awesome his homemade sauce is and how to mix them blahblah. We started feeling offended since we were not offered any sauces when it was slow , and now our request was ignored just because he needs to introduce how awesome his sauce is to other guests. We gave up waiting for new gas refill and decided to pay and leave. He was too busy at that moment so we gave him our card without asking for a check or confirm the total, for his convenience. I was charged $76 for three adults and 2 toddlers. I wrote $85 on the receipt and then suddenly realized something was not right, I asked him how much is each person nowadays as I don't see a price board or menu anywhere in store. ( We were not offered with any menu either) Then he said sorry I calculated incorrectly, but still did not tell me price for each person but just wrote numbers on a piece of paper and changed the total amount to $59 Then came my most awkward experience ever. He said he does not know how to refund to my card directly, so he can only refund me the differences in cash "Tell me How much tip to you want to give me, and I will give you the rest of the change" He said these words out with a fake smile, hands crossed, no action or any intention to take or hand me any cash, as if I am supposed to say--keep the change. I was really pissed off starting from that moment. "Can you just give me all the change, and then I can decide on the tip?" "Just tell me how much you want to tip, I will give you the rest". He insisted. I begged him three times for the full amount of my change, he finally gave the $16.5 back to me after I promised I will leave my tip on table. I did not leave any tip. He was watching me all the way and then stopped us twice, asking "girl, did you leave the tip on table?" twice, to me and my friend when we were stepping out of the place. End of my story, will never come again. If you are white and expecting a better service and good food from this place, below are my findings. This owner is a penny-pincher, he does not hire any staff even on busiest Saturday night, don't be fooled by him wearing disposable hat and glove showing you this is clean and sanitary place , he never changes them, we witnessed him touching food after giving us cash and credit card, without changing gloves. He also uses a bottle of glass cleaner for everything --all surface he also uses cheapest and low quality ingredients, trust me---try avoid the meat balls and dumplings there read more
