I visited this bar this past Sunday around 12:30 with a group of friends who were visiting Sacramento. I was genuinely excited to bring them here and share the experience. When we arrived, we were the only patrons in the bar. Unfortunately, the bartender was extremely unfriendly and gave the impression that we were an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests. We sat at a table and were never approached, so each of us had to go up individually to order drinks. When I asked for the apple cocktail from the holiday menu, the bartender rolled her eyes and asked what it was called. I explained that it was the only apple cocktail listed and that I couldn't recall the exact name. She rolled her eyes again and appeared visibly annoyed. I understand that everyone can have an off day, but the level of dismissiveness and lack of basic hospitality was disappointing--especially when bringing out-of-town guests and when the bar was otherwise empty. read more

Blink and you will miss Frank! Located in The Ice Blocks on R Street, this small cozy, intimate, dark bar is quite a gem! On our way to dinner at Mendocino Farms, we decided to stop by Frank for a quick drink. I ordered the special 99 Problems, but a Peach Ain't One and my husband ordered Cameron's Kick - both drinks were tasty, on the pricy side ($25 for 2 drinks), but tasty nonetheless. Frank gives a Speakeasy vibe and you feel like you're inside a secret club once you walk inside - we were able to walk right in and sit at the bar. Not sure if the vibe is different at night. The woman next to me, a regular from Natomas, swore this must be a new crew and that it's not usually like this. Yeah so I realize I'm a little late to this par-tay. I had heard of Frank and because of Covid had put off visiting indoor bars for awhile. This spot is close to Device Brewery, Mendocino Farms, etc. The nondescript door can be easy to miss! No windows either. Once inside, the intimate low-light atmosphere has a chill vibe. Drinks average about $12 and the venue is CASH ONLY. There's an ATM conveniently located inside. Met up with some of my fellow Yelp peeps. I am wracking my brain trying to remember the name of the cocktail I had (watch this space folks!), it was tasty but consensus amongst my fellow group who ordered the same drink was that it wasn't very strong. There are beers on tap, the IPA I wanted ran out so I was offered a can. I came to the conclusion that it's not the same. To give my drinking friends a reference point, remember how much we loved the ole "Pre-Flight Lounge" underneath the Downtown Mall before they tore all that up to make way for the Golden 1 Arena and all adjacent (new) businesses? Don't go complaining in your review you (1) didn't know they didn't use cc and then (2) don't complain because now you understand how painful out-of-network ATM fees are like. I love the idea of a speakeasy. The inner naughty man in me is intrigued by the idea of exploring a replication of a forbidden, prohibition-era liquor establishment. When a friend of mine and his wife informed us that they had the "secret" code to a speakeasy in Midtown Sacramento, my wife and I couldn't contain our excitement. When we arrived at the establishment, a friendly employee at the door greeted us and my friend whispered the code to him (I'm not sure if he whispered, but it makes for a sexy story). Once we entered the establishment, we were greeted by a very intimate (cozy & tight) environment. There were comfortable, padded seating against the wall with tables and regular chairs. There were also bar stools linking the bar counter area. Although the place was packed to capacity, we were able to score seating against the wall of the establishment. When busy, there is absolutely no privacy, nor room to stretch out without accidentally smacking someone. Therefore, if you plan on meeting but to discuss top secret information, I suggest going elsewhere. Other than needing a secret code for entry, you're probably wondering what the benefit of this place is versus a traditional bar. I can tell you that traditional bars make drinks, this place serves what I will call classy cocktails. Instead of choosing the selection of drinks available on the menu, my wife and I elected to try the "dealer's choice" option. For those not familiar, the dealer's choice is when you opt for the bartender to design a cocktail specifically for you. The only information that we provided the bartender with was our traditional cocktail preference. My wife and I were both impressed by the drinks that were concocted by the bartender, the aesthetics of the drinks (please reference my photos), and the overall vibe of the establishment (I was enamored that someone kept 90's - early 2000's hip hop and R&B on constant rotation during our visit). We came here for drinks the night before Thanksgiving. We were able to grab four seats at the bar. The bartenders were prompt and friendly. They are cash only, but have a no-fee ATM. It was fairly busy, and it's a small place. It was lively but not too much. The bar is pretty dark. There's a fun SpongeBob themed fish tank behind the counter. Their menu is via QR code. They make some classic cocktails and rotate some specials. We were grabbing drinks after dinner, so I ordered the Caramel Delight, one of their dessert drinks. It was really delicious. I've been here a couple of times and was never truly impressed. The drinks are always sub-par and a bit costly for what you're paying. Also, as an ex employee of Orphan, a sister company of Frank, I was both surprised and not surprised to find that this bar is cash only. Not convenient but also makes a lot of sense given the owner and his "interesting" business practices! The thing that is a constant here is the service. I've always felt the service was really "mean girl" energy. I was out with some friends and upon walking in they told us to sit at any open booth. There were only two but only one with additional chairs so we chose that one. At the end of the table was a single drink that looked to be somewhat finished with a napkin on top and some crumpled around it so we assumed it was an unfinished glass waiting to be cleared off. 15 to 20 minutes later a waitress came by and told us that we were sitting at someone's table and that is that the glass with a napkin meant. She moved us over to another spot. Weirdly the glass sat there at the empty booth from the time we moved to the time we left. Sooooooo I'm not sure what that's about.
