My wife, 3 kids and I were vacationing in Newport and the hotel clerk recommended this place. We came back for breakfast every morning and enjoyed a hearty, tasty meal each time. The omelets were large and yummy. The hash was excellent. The stuffed French toast was a little sweet for my taste, but my kids loved it. The waitresses were very friendly. Setting is nostalgic, food is decent but it is exceptionally overpriced. Eggs benedict along with French toast, two eggs and bacon for forty dollars far outstretches either the setting or food quality. Although the breakfast is very good I don't agree with some reviews about great prices. We love to go off the main path to support local business instead of the big hotels etc., but after receiving our bill we noticed the coffee was not included in price of breakfast as is the norm especially with a $13 price for an egg dish. $2.50 for coffee each & my choice of regular syrup or natural that is "better for you" for $3 that I was not told was extra. (needed a second just to cover half of the meal). So after all hidden pricing I could have went into Jamestown for a huge buffet including prime rib, desserts etc. for the same final price. read more

Ehh... mediocre at best for the long wait it took to cook a couple eggs. I really like how the "chef" puts the poached egg on the back of his hairy/sweaty hand and slides it on top of the English muffin. Great little diner for breakfast. I had a western omelette with the "cheese smothered home-fries" which I was impressed with. The service was pretty good although it took a little while for us to get our coffee refilled. The only reason I did not give the place 5 stars is they did not have real maple syrup which I think is a necessity at any go-to breakfast joint . Also, like many small diners it's cash only so bring cash to avoid the surcharge at the in-house ATM. Went here for a nice breakfast in Newport after reading good reviews, and were very disappointed. They have several Benedict options, so thought they'd be good, but the hollandaise was inedible, a thick gravy tasting like paste, and the English muffin was burnt. Homefries had to be from last week, they were desiccated black crusts, and when we pointed this out to the waitress, she said she would bring us some "fresh" ones - those arrived and were clearly not grilled, boiled looking potatoes, with some paprika on them, but better than original ones, until we tried to eat them and discovered they were cold! I could go on, but you get the picture, bad food at a high price. Our virtually inedible breakfasts, and we're not that particular, cost over $25.00. There must be a better place, and hopefully, we find it tomorrow. read more

Holy cow this place is beyond disgusting. The steak and eggs was inedible. It was like rotten ham. The options for syrup were overpriced "real" maple syrup or "Log Cabin." Now I put log cabin in quotes because I SAW the waitresses pouring from huge industrial size tub that said imitation maple syrup on it into the Log Cabin plastic containers! They were not even trying to hide it. Further, nothing had flavor. It was as if there was no salt or pepper added to anything. Major disappointment. Food was decent at best. I thought the place could've (really should've) been cleaner - the napkin dispenser on the table was very dusty and only 1 of 3 cooks had a hat/hair net on. Lived in Newport most of my life and this was my first time to Franklin spa. We were greeted at door immediately and told we could sit where we like. Place was clean. Right off after being seated I noticed this worker with a huge mustache walking around. I figured he was the dishwasher because he was so dirty. His shirt was filthy. I figured out later he was a cook. Put on an apron man! He looked homeless. The food was OK, my daughter had biscuits and gravy, I had corned beef hash omelette, canned corn beef hash. Everything was hot and delivered fast. The food was OK. The highlight was our waitress Julia. She was friendly and checked on us a number of times. Food was pricey for the quality. There were three of us and my son ate off the kids menu. We didn't order any extra sides and Bill was $34.50 before tip. read more

the best breakfast ever !!! Went to Newport for a long weekend. we stayed at a B&B across the street and just stumbled in here. We sat at the counter and the grill was spotless, all the food in very fresh and the quality was amazing !!! The waitresses were all college kids working for the summer so if you need to ask for something 2x don't be upset. You can't have a bad meal here. The owner is a very nice guy also. Gone are the days when this place served a grilled cheese and chips for under 5 bucks. I guess when Woody Allen comes calling, the prices go up. And what do you get for more money? Let's start with the fact that ordering cheese with your omelette brings along a $1.95 upcharge...this despite the fact that an omelette, by it's definition, comes with cheese. And if you want pure maple syrup, it's going to cost you: $2.95 for approximately 1/4 cup of the pure stuff. Really? The review is 3 stars just because the wait staff works hard, but I think you can find better food at a better price in plenty of other Newport establishments. read more

The Franklin Spa was recommended to us and we were terribly disappointed. The service for our mid morning breakfast was terrible with the waitress was more interested in the TV than customers. A ham and cheese omelet was served without cheese and when we brought the plate to the waitress (who was not to be found) she had the cook melt it on top in the microwave. Toast was served burnt and coffee refills had to be requested. Paying was not easy either because after delivering the check, the waitress was gone and others had no interest in finding her. read more

I visited my sister who is a new resident of Newport and she recommended we eat here because.... well this is one of the only places she liked. I of course took her advice and we went for a nice brunch before she headed off to work. Thankfully we came at a time when there was no line (Tuesday at 1). The service was pleasant and quick. They had a good selection of breakfast items, a lot of omelets etc. They were a little on the pricey side ($10-$16 range) but I just assume that's because in Newport everything in general is more expensive. I ordered the lobster benedict which came with hash potatoes. I thought the eggs were cooked to perfection the sauce was savory and delicious. The vegetables were fresh ( it came with spinach and tomato). The only thing I wish there was more was lobster, just a little more would have gone a long way. I did like the unique fact that instead of an english muffin it was on some sort of toasted bread roll. The potatoes were yummy especially with the addition of a little salt and pepper. I finished my plate clean and left fulfilled. I would come here again if I was ever in the neighborhood. read more

Never had a bad breakfast here. The staff is awesome, the food is GREAT, the vibe is relaxed and friendly. I especially LOVE the crab cake benedict WITH the veggies (spinach, tomato)-- a TO DIE FOR combination. I mean, seriously?! Crab cakes, for breakfast?! YUM! This place is a little more expensive than others in Newport, but so worth it. I go all the time, and always leave happy. Definitely a place to try-- you will want to go back again. Note: it is cash only, which stinks. They do have an ATM, but it charges a few dollars. I understand their reasoning, but its a nuisance to carry cash. The New York Times has an article that said this is a must stop for breakfast. I think the writer is related to the owner or something. If I was using my own radar I would have first just driven by from the curb appearance. Next just from word go walking in the door I would have turned around. The plastic blow up monkey in the tree next to me was the only thing smiling at my table. I kept saying to myself..."it was recommended by New York Times". My wife and I ate and immediately looked for a Starbucks to cleanse our palate with a piece of lemon loaf. I just don't get it. We were going to use the rest of the article to plan the rest of our day but it is scattered on some highway somewhere now (in trash actually for the environmental minded...tossed out window sounds funnier). I just don't understand how it was given an space or wasted ink on this place by the New York Times. An egg McMuffin would have been better. read more

This place is awesome! It's pretty much a no frills diner place but isn't overrun by tourists during the breakfast hour. We went right before 10 on a weekday and it was still pretty empty. The breakfast menu was huuuuge! I'm an eggs Benedict fanatic and they had so many different types. But alas, I'm pregnant so I had to settle for the California omelet which was delicious. Also got the stuffed maple French toast. They also had a large selection of breakfast sandwiches. Overall, the creativity of the large breakfast menu was something you'd find at one of the more crowded upscale cafes, but with a low key diner feel. My wife an I went here based on the Yelp reviews and were disappointed. The place is nothing fancy but seemingly clean, which is really our only requirement in that area (it's all about the food!). As for the food, my wife ordered an omelette which I'd give three stars. It was just average, but it was fresh. I ordered the blueberry french toast based on all the great reviews on Yelp (and pictures that people posted). Well to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The filing was some sort of cream cheese filling with literally NO FLAVOR other than that of cream cheese. It wasn't sweetened and while it had a blueberry color, it had no blueberry flavor. Then, to top things off (literally) they serve it with Log Cabin Syrup!! I mean, seriously, with what they charge they can't see their way to real maple syrup (or even a decent knock-off like you get at IHOP). Franklin Spa has the quaintness of a "mom and pop", friendly staff, great energy, with a family feel. The menu is one of the best and most creative menu's I have ever seen in a breakfast diner. They have a great variety of food (not just your 2 eggs toast and homefries... but you can get that too). I had the Eggs Benedict, which was amazing. They had a lot of local flavors. Franklin Spa is a great little diner. We were looking for a low key breakfast spot with simple, inexpensive food. We ordered eggs, toast, and some pancakes on the side. Their buttermilk pancakes were the best I've ever had in a diner. They were light, fluffy, and so flavorful that I didn't even mind using pancake syrup instead of the real stuff. They also make their own hot sauce, which was delicious and fantastic on scrambled eggs. Good service and a pleasant small town vibe makes this a great breakfast spot!
