First time. Delicious!!! Great service, you order at the counter, food comes out quick. I ordered "The Sampler", came with 1/4 pulled pork, 1/4 brisket, 1/4 burnt ends, 1/2 Memphis style baby back ribs, 2 homemade cornbreads and pickled red onions and pickles, I chose not to get pickled jalapeños. Ordered southern style green beans at an additional charge. Worth it. The meats were tender, juicy and very flavorful. I shared and still had leftovers. I've tried a few bbq places in NW Indiana, I will say Frank's Backyard BBQ is my #1 choice. Give them a try.

My son really wanted macaroni and cheese and we had 20 minutes for a dinner stop so to yelp I went and found Frank's. I will say we probably didn't order the best things for bbq as I wasn't really in the mood for bbq, so I ordered the burger. My son had a pulled pork slider and we ordered sides of macaroni and cheese and corn. The place was clean, no one was there when we got there around 5:30pm but had filled up by the time we left. We ordered at the counter and then the staff brought our food out. They had a kids corner which my son loved and didn't want to leave. The burger was ok. I don't think I would order it again. It just seemed to be missing something in my opinion and I can't put my finger on what. The macaroni and cheese was great. The corn, I didn't like nor did my son. It was too spicy for us, so if you like a spicy corn sitting in cheese this might be a hit for you. The pulled pork- not sure. I took a bite but since it was my sons I didn't put any sauce on it so I can't give it a fair assessment. I would definitely come back here to try bbq with different sides as the environment was homey, food was fresh and it's a local business.

I discovered Frank's while playing disc golf at Lemon Lake. They were closed that day but I added it to my list. Last night, I made the 45 minute drive and it was worth it. Frank's sits on Highway 41 in an average looking building. There are picnic tables inside. You order at the counter. The menu is on a marker board. And there is 80s, 90s, and 2000s music blaring. The only combo plate they have is a 3x3 platter that comes with 3 meats, 3 sides, and 2 drinks. I picked brisket, pulled pork, and pulled ribs were the choice. They don't include the actual ribs in the platter. I don't know all the meats that are offered with the platter but they do have pork belly, chicken, and hot links. The first meat I had was the pulled ribs. The pulled ribs had their traditional sauce mixed in. It needed it or the meat would have been too dry. It was all right...a little tougher to chew than I like. Out of the 3 meats, it was the one I liked the least. My next meat was the pulled pork. This was phenomenal pulled pork. It was easy to chew and seasoned extremely well. Both sauces mixed with it well. I could have easily at another half pound of it. The third meat I had was the brisket. Just like the pulled pork, this brisket was bodacious. It was easy to chew with a good mix of fat marbled in with an excellent black pepper rub. Both sauces went with the brisket well. There are 2 sauces - a tangy traditional ketchup base and a sweet ketchup-vinegar base. Usually it takes a thicker sauce for brisket but both sauces went well with the brisket. Actually, the pulled pork and brisket were so good, I almost considered giving up being a sauceaholic. My 3 sides - potato salad, beans, and cheesy spicy corn. Outstanding Sweet jalepeno cornbread also came with it. The potato salad was a mix of mayo and mustard with the potatoes cut cubed. It did have that abomination known as celery in it though but was easy to pick out. Out of the 3 sides, I liked the beans the best as they were homemade with a smoky, thick taste. The cheesy spicy corn was weird to me. It was like queso with corn. There are other things on the menu I want to try like the belly bomb which is a jalapeño with cream cheese and brisket stuffed inside. The lady let me sample the pork belly and it was similar to the brisket with the fat adding to the taste but also kind of like white meat pork. I would recommend it. They had sweet tea too which makes this Bama boy happy and for Indiana, it was all right. I would recommend making it with real sugar (4 cups per gallon) instead of adding syrup though. Then it would be real Southern sweet tea. I will be making several.more trips to Frank's in the future.

What's great about my Yelp community is the variety of reviews for any one particular place. When it comes to food there is certainly varying degrees of tastes. I read one fellas trip around NWI & Chitown looking for good "Que" and as many locations that were visited, it appears there is much to contribute. Others visit vendors and have better experiences than we have had at the same locations, which of course leads me to believe we showed up on an off day. So let's talk about Frank's. We moved into the area and while looking for houses we stumbled across this place. Timing is everything because each time we would drive by, it was always closed. So it went on the radar in hopes of experiencing it at some point. Tonight was the night! We swung by while we were in the area and saw it was active. Firstly this place is a shack! Do not expect seating. The staff looked as though they were in rare form and down to earth folks. The smokers are in full swing out the back of the building..It equates to what your neighbors would be doing. In most cases you can expect a great product coming from your neighborhood chef because they aren't governed by rules and regulations or a corporate entity. The menu is little hard to process, it could be simplified. Pricey, but if it works for you swing for the fence. Then"que" was decent not as good as many others have indicated but it may have been an off night. Couldn't tell the difference in flavor between the pulled pork and the (pricier) pulled rib. Pork belly was very good. Sauce tastes just like Sweet Baby Ray's Sides, did I mention it may have been an off night? Ya the sides were horrible. Green beans were over cooked and wilted as though they were can bought and thrown together. Not sure what the glutinous wallpaper paste mass corn concoction was supposed to be, but tasted overwhelmingly inundated with chili powder. The coleslaw, ya no! Absolutely awful. Jalapeño cornbread tasted like it came straight out of the Jiffy box, it was so dry. Tasting your product before distribution is key. If you don't like it, don't sell it. If you think it's good stand by it and accepts the feedback that people like us submit. The only reason l would return is for the Pork Belly. read more

Franks is a weekly routine for my friends and I. It's a must have after a day of working or a day outdoors! I've tried just about everything on the menu and nothing has disappointed me yet. They have a killer barbecue sauce and all of the meats are always tender and cooked to perfection. I usually get the 3 slider combo that way I can enjoy all they have to offer. As for the service, the women who the run the registers and prepare the orders are always very nice and hospitable and will help you with any questions you have. The building is very small but it's gets the job done and it is always very clean inside. I would recommend Frank's to anyone who is looking for some terrific barbecue! read more

Second visit here. Frank's is the bomb when it comes to BBQ. I have tried numerous BBQ, Tennessee, Georgia, north Carolina,Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Arkansas Kentucky, Florida, lots of places. I would consider Frank's as a pitmaster championship BBQ. There is no better in the Chicago area. Blows away fancy dumps like Smoque. Best brisket, pork, ribs and chicken. Brisket and ribs are to die for. I will keep coming back, it's a 30 min drive, but so worth it! read more

Been here many times at a few locations in Cedar Lake over the years. Phenomenal bbq , brisket chicken. Hell they got smoked meat loaf!!! Everything sides ect. Great portions and flavor. The staff is always courteous and friendly. So, the reason I'm leaving this review. Today I ordered brisket smoked chicken and some mac & cheese and home made dessert. Picked it up. Got home. No bbq sauce. I called was gonna swing back and the owner on the line said she would bring it to my home and was sorry it was missed. Now everyone errors in this world. It wasn't a big deal but a bummer I'm like 15 mins away. She was here in like 5. Unreal. Just a classy lady doin' right by a virtually unknown customer. One word-YUM. I had the pulled pork sandwich, cheesey/spicey corn. My 5 year old daughter had the kids pulled pork slider with macaroni & cheese, and my husband the beef brisket with beans. EVERYTHING was outstanding! We will be back for sure. Very friendly & quick service, in a clean atmosphere that decorated really cute. Ate outside at the pinic tables. The menu is small. But insanely good. They have about 4 (perfectly)smoked meat's at a time. And sides like spicy corn, smoked potatoes, and cole slaw. The menu does change a little each season. Oh, if I could give this place 10 stars I certainly would!! This tiny place serves some big time good food. Barbecue aficionados from near & far should make it a point to eat Frank's smoked beef brisket. Both the chopped & sliced were heaven on earth! Perfectly smoky flavor, fork tender, & melt in your mouth goodness. The sauce on the chopped brisket perfectly complimented the meat without overpowering it. Our sides were the smoky baked beans & the garlic potatoes. Both were delicious! We will be back next week to try the smoked ribs & pork. If you are craving some awesome barbecue, do yourself a huge favor & get yourself to Frank's Backyard Barbecue!!! read more

Plain and simple! This place has the best damn ribs in NW Indiana. The seasoning is on point! Plenty of sauce and juice! The meet is so juicy and tender that the bones literally slide out. I love these ribs. read more

I explained that it was undercooked and that I had ordered medium well. She then asked, "What do you want me to do with this?" while just standing there staring at me. After acting irritated, she asked if I wanted a new burger or wanted "this one" recooked. The idea of them recooking a burger I had already cut into and handled felt completely unsanitary. Her attitude throughout the interaction was awful. I declined a replacement, and she huffed that she'd remove it from the bill. Unfortunately, it got even worse. Just minutes later, an earwig crawled out of my friend's salad. We were horrified. We took a picture, caught the bug, and asked another server to get the manager. When she returned, she walked up with her hand on her hip and said, "Now what?" We handed her the napkin with the bug, and instead of apologizing, she opened it right there on the table, let the bug crawl out, scoffed at us, and said, "Fine, I'll take that off the bill too." At that point, my friend was covering her mouth in disgust after realizing she had been eating a salad with a bug in it. Rather than showing concern or professionalism, the manager snapped, "What do you want?! I didn't put the bug in the salad." I have never experienced such unsanitary conditions combined with such shockingly hostile customer service. Mistakes can happen, but the manager's behavior was beyond unacceptable. We left disgusted and will absolutely never return.

Love the food from here. It's a little over an hour from my home, yet worth the drive every time. Staff is kind, courteous, helpful and happy to answer any questions. We were in the process of savoring the meal before anyone remembered to take pics, so, maybe next review. Foods ordered: Brisket, the Big Frank, turkey panini, brisket panini, pulled pork sandwich, mac & cheese, smokey potatoes, smokey brussel sprouts... makes my mouth water just thinking about it. PRICY, but WONDERFUL food. Have eaten there and taken stuff home. EVERY thing I've tried there has been GREAT. Sometimes I'll stop by after work and just grab something out of their coolers to take home, like their wonderful rib tips, burnt ends, brisket, pork belly, belly bombs. Aside from the food, the restaurant itself is unusual. You order at a window, pick it up when it's ready and either take it home or eat it there at picnic tables inside or outside. No frills here. Frank's Backyard BBQ is my favorite barbecue spot in the entire region. The food is consistently excellent, and the quality stands out every single time.
