If you're in town this is one place you definitely need to check out. They have a large selection of goodies, sandwiches, entrees to go, appetizers, salads. The display cases are full and everything looks fresh and appealing. I decided to get a chicken Caprese sandwich. I I took it to go and was surprised to find that it was an open faced sandwich so it really needed a fork. Luckily I found one in my car because they didn't give me one. The sandwich was above expectations and taste except for the slices of tomato which I picked off because it was obviously those horrible tomatoes you get almost everywhere that are not ripe. Tomatoes aside...the sandwich was really delicious and just the right amount of food. The chicken was very tasty and had a small amount of awesome pesto sauce and a small amount of mozzarella and some spinach on top and on the bottom was a slice of their delicious herb focaccia. Sandwich was pricey but seems like prices are high everywhere now. I'd get it again. I also got two donuts to go. One sugar which was perfect and a chocolate sugar one was disappointing I'm not really sure what was wrong with it perhaps it was scorched oil that it was cooked in...I am not sure but the flavor was a little bit off. I come to Frank's probably once a month, I do their breakfast sandwiches for my husband and I . I aways get pretty good service. But today was horrible! I walked up to the counter to order our regular. Waited 5 minutes once someone came over they decided to ring 2 separate orders before even noticing I was there . Then I FINALLY placed my order 2 Bangor best one with sausage one with bacon with TOASTED English muffin. So while a more normal, less decrepit creature would normally enter a fine establishment like Frank's and see pastries, cookies, sandwiches, etc - I see only one colour. The colour of donut. All over the western world I have expectantly arrived at a bakery only to have my hopes dashed. That's because the western world is uneducated about donuts. It's time to Make Donuts Great Again (I'm selling hats). There is a shortlist of exceptions to the downfall of Western donuts (see my other reviews), and today we get to add Franks to the list. Franks SHOULD be like that one "Chinese Takeout" place that has the whole world on the menu - Italian, Chinese, Indian, etc - you know the place. You also know that it's absolutely awful and is worth avoiding. Yet somehow Frank's pantheon of pastries manages to work. Everyone has a favourite thing here, and it seems to work for everyone. So on to donuts - there is a system for eating donuts at an establishment for the first (and second, and also third) time. This system of course starts with the basics - an old fashioned donut. This is the control for all further donut tasting. Everything you need to know about a bakeries donuts can be found in their capacity to create a cake donut, and consequently I wont even talk about other donuts here. So what makes Frank's old fashioned so good? A smooth, delicate consistency. A subtle note of frying lard. A deceptively colour - are you brown? Tan? Caramel? A crunch after a few hours in the air. Moist enough to enjoy on its own, and dry enough to eat with a coffee, or milk, or heck, orange juice, you freak. A taste that tells you, "Hey friend. We're on the same team here." Do not miss this bake shop while in Bangor. The shop is on a small street. There is parking in front and also a back parking lot. You can eat breakfast here or have bagels to go. I tried the no bake cookies, choc chip and oatmeal raisin. They were all fantastic. Soft and tasty. I also got two original whoopie pies which did not disappoint. I tried a cinn and raisin bagel not made in house and it was also excellent. The staff was great. You go in and wait to be helped. There are plenty of staff so the line moves quickly. I paid $26.00 for 6 cookies, 2 whoopie pies, 1 bagel and a pint of potato salad. I would go again in a heart beat. read more

Stopped in to one of the friendliest places I've been in for awhile. Purchased an eclair, and three cookies...peanut butter chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and a caramel chip. All were delicious and clearly made with great ingredients. Best eclair I've ever had. I was surprised to find that they don't make baguettes. Only giving one star as no stars is not an option! I had my worst experience ever today. A family member ordered a VEGAN cupcake for my son who has egg and nut allergies. Much to our horror we gave my son the cupcake that we were give from Frank's Bakery as a Vegan cupcake per the conversation that was had at time of order and my son went into antiflatic shock and was rushed to the emergency room. Frank's Bake Shop is one of those family owned bakeries that everyone in the area probably grew up with. These businesses are a dying breed with the likes of Dunkin' Donuts and other chains popping up everywhere. But, I love a place that has some history, tradition, and great customer service. Frank's is known for their doughnuts and their daily specials. The donuts are second to none when they come out freshly baked in the morning. The daily specials are very affordable take and bake items such as meatloaf that could feed an entire family. I was lucky enough to come in on a Wednesday to grab a turkey pie that lasted two meals. The flakey crust was amazing and just as good the next day. Scrap spending the entire day cooking the turkey for Thanksgiving this year. Do yourself a favor and just pick up one of the 8 inch turkey pies. The one thing I didn't enjoy was the espresso here. They use Shipwreck Coffee and the latte had either too much milk or the coffee wasn't strong enough. The latte lacked any flavor, but I was enjoying my jelly-filled doughnut too much to complain at the time. read more

I love local, bedrock businesses. Frank's Bake Shop would fit that category, and have been since 1947. I was in Bangor for a funeral. Driving north quite early, by the time we arrived in the Queen City, we were looking for a drive-by breakfast option with a nod to the sweeter side. We found Frank's on Yelp and knew we had to stop. Once we were inside, the smells of pastries, donuts, and other delectable told us we had made a wise choice. Frank's is easy to find; they are up on top of the hill on State Street, headed towards the hospital, with downtown in your rear view mirror. They have plenty of onstreet parking out front, too. Both my wife and I kept it simple. I went with the jelly-filled, which was raspberry, and she selected the glazed donut option. These were heavenly in flavor, obviously homemade, but not overly heavy, either. The jelly-filled was amply infused with a sweet, raspberry filling that was just the right combo of sweet and fruity. Miss Mary's glazed (2 for her) were the bomb, as she let me have a sample. If donuts aren't your thing, Frank's has tarts, coffee rolls, pies, fruit squares, and all manner of other baked goods--they're a bakery!! They also have daily specials like turkey pot pie, spaghetti, and meatloaf to name a few choices off their menu. Another gem that's been around for awhile that I'm just discovering. With places like Frank's and some of Maine's other donut emporiums, I'm done with the chains forever. read more
