We love coming here during lent for some excellent seafood. The Jumbo shrimp is the best I have ever had, Jumbo is an understatement these are huge shrimp! We ordered: 1/4 pound Jumbo Shrimp, Ocean Perch and an order of Hush Puppies, Calamari, and coleslaw. The food was piping hot and very flavorful! You have to eat it slow or you will burn your mouth and you want to eat slow to savor the flavors! The restaurant eat in area is very small but perfect to get a quick bite to eat with a friend. The people working here are so nice and friendly! I am sure the owners are really happy with them A+ service! We will be back for sure and recommend you give this place a try! read more

In town and had to check out my old stomping ground for jumbo battered fried shrimp. Franks has two locations Irving Park, Chicago & Hoffman Estates, IL. I was in the burbs this time by the HE location. Ordered 1/2 pound Jumbo Fried Shrimp which is a little more (normally do 1/4 pound) than I usually get but it's been awhile and I wanted to have a little extra for later. For sides I got there macaroni salad and coleslaw. Always a nice pairing with the shrimp. I was greeted and welcome upon arriving. Gentlemen kindly answered a few questions as it's been awhile and didn't remember a few things. Order was cooked fast and presented nice n hot as always. It was same as always with perfectly battered not too light not to heavy shrimps. They were same good jumbo size too and went well with the cocktail sauce BUT I notice it was as flavorful as I've enjoyed in the past. It seemed like they change something in the batter- less seasoning perhaps. I was a bit disappointed on that so I didn't enjoy it as much as usual. When in town again I'll give another try to see or maybe even go to the Irving Park Location instead. I do recommend you give either location a try as it's DEFINITELY worth it just don't have your expectations set as high for the HE location if you decide to try them. Despite living so close to this place, I have never been mostly because I try to avoid fried foods. But I was in need of some food last night and decided to give it a try. Honestly, I was super surprised. I tried the fried perch and shrimp, as well as the hush puppies. What I love the most about this fried seafood is the coating. It remains very crunchy and isn't too greasy or thick. So different than the typical coating for most fried food. The shrimp was my favorite but the perch was very good too. Highly recommend the hush puppies as well. They had great flavor with the addition of the onions. Not too bready. Highly recommend if you are looking for some quality fried seafood. read more

The ambience is very dated and tired looking from the 70's, normally those places are hidden gem's, but this was not a gem unfortunately. Service was good, and friendly. We ordered catfish strips and 1lb of jumbo shrimp. They don't have catfish filets or catfish steaks. The jumbo shrimp were fried nicely but the jumbo shrimp had NO FLAVOR, plain batter is exactly what you get! As you can see from the signage I probably should have ordered with garlic. I guess I'm spoiled by Chicago fish businesses with flavor. I don't understand how you don't have at minimum -- salt and pepper in a plain batter. I almost ordered the "Chicago Style" but a friend from church came in as I was about to order and stated they eat here all the time and advised me to order the jumbo shrimp. My hubby said the catfish strips were okay, but I'm not sure I'd patronize this business again. read more

Disappointed with the jumbo fried shrimp. Dry and tasteless. The cocktail sauce was basically solid. I can't even guess how old it was.

The shrimp and the perch was very good, whereas the catfish was okay. We always make a point to stop here to indulge in some fried food. The cost is reasonable but what I don't like is a 3.5% surcharge is put on all in store sales plus they charge you another 3.5% if you use a bank card so that's a total of 7%. Add on cook county 10% sales tax and they ask for a tip as well. Restaurants complain of financial hardship and lack of sales and I can see why. We have dramatically reduced our eating out for the reasons above and it's not how much it costs but the shady tactics used to increase it. Just raise your prices accordingly and be upfront. read more

Delicious fried food. Chicago style shrimp is the way to go. They're large and have an ocean/sea flavor to them. Service odds quick and friendly. Food comes out hot so be careful. Definitely a counter service type joint. Place isn't the most comfortable to dine in but worth it if you want your food fresh from the fryer. We tried the Chicago fried shrimp, the cat fish, the ocean perch, hush puppies and potato pancakes. We shared everything. And it was pretty tasty considering we're right smack in the Midwest - far, far from any ocean. Service was great. I never knew this place existed until my dear friend told me about this place. During covid pandemic there is no inside dining. Every order is placed in a paper bag and kept open to retain crispiness of the fried foods. First thing I noticed was how clean this restaurant was and not full of grease or walking out like you smell like grease. Very clean and no smells. Prices are reasonable. We ordered a variety of things. We got 3/4 lb of the Chicago shrimp (ahhhmazzing), clam strips, calamari rings, and a lb of mixed order (onion rings, fried mushroom, zucchini and cauliflower). Everything we ordered had a unique breading so nothing tasted all the same which I really liked. The live about 15 minutes away and the food still was very crispy by the time we got home to eat our food. Oh and by the way they have yummy cocktail sauce. We ordered extra in case. read more

Always friendly people working at Frank's Shrimp! That's probably because the fried Shrimp and other seafood and side items are so good! They don't have to deal with angry diners. We've been going there for years, haven't ever had a bad meal. You can eat in at the 4-6 small table dining area or take out great fried seafood. Alright!! 2 nice ladies working there one deveined and removes the shells while the other gal does the breading . Fresh , Jumbo , Butterflied Shrimp from the Gulf . Franks is the best around no doubt. Has been for many years. Get the Chicago Style great taste w garlic mixed in. Get more than you think you'll need because you will wish you did. Goes well w the hot bbq sauce they make. Great every time - the mix w that sauce is unlike anything you've had before. All the other foods are great too but I stick with my favorite each time - about a 40 minute drive coming from the W but well worth it every time! Again get extra you'll be glad you did! read more

Always have had a bit of anxiety about going here for some some reason, but after a 2 years I just said screw it and I dove in. It was too hot to cook and I was hungry for something I haven't ordered yet from around the neighborhood. Yelp suggested. I took it up on its on offer. First off let me break down pounds to pieces of food. Approximately. 1/2 pound Chicago shrimp = 8 shrimp. 1 person needs 8 if nothing else is ordered. Otherwise get get only a 1/4 pound. 1/4 pound of catfish = 4 good sized strips. Maybe about a filets worth. Clam strips and mushrooms are a set price which I will cover in a moment. I will update you about other items as in frequent the location more. Being as it was my first time here, I was a little hesitant and worry about the previous reviewer's stating the employees are rude. Fortunately this was not the case at all. A young teenage girl helped me order what she thought was a good amount of food. Of course it was a bit more than I could eat but that's OK. He was very pleasant as was the lady in the back who is cooking the food. She suggested I get the shrimp, the half pound portion. I guess she did not realize I was going to order more. After I took one bite of the shrimp and the juices oozed out. This was damn good. Other reviewers complained that it lacks seasoning. To them I say sprinkle some lemon juice on there or some salt if you want. I do understand your concerns but it's a matter of taste. The shrimp itself tasted fresh. Real fresh. The salt flavor came from the ocean it one lived in. The shrimp are also huge. The same goes for the catfish. It tastes exactly like how fish is supposed to taste with no smell in just a clean crisp taste in your mouth. It looks as if this batter is the same as the shrimp. Once again it is huge. The clam strips barely made it home as I munched on them while driving. The clam in the mushrooms do not seem to be prepared in the store. The batter it's self looks completely different than of the fish and shrimp. I don't know why people are knocking the mushrooms. They are typical mushrooms that you get from any restaurant but they only cost three dollars. Tips: stick with the quarter pound of portions if you are going to sample. Get the dinner which includes fries and a salad if you know what you want. You get a half pound of food with that so it is a very good deal. And of course, keep the bag open if you take it to go and want it crispy. I hate myself for not going here years sooner. read more

I lived in Chicago twice and didn't know this, and having lived in New Orleans for some time, I've become kind of a shrimp snob. There are thousands of shrimp species, varying in size and color, dependent upon their habitat. In recent years, methods of farming shrimp have become more developed, and a great deal of the shrimp you purchase in the grocery or at a restaurant was farm raised (not caught in the wild). Shrimp are sorted by the number per pound, with 10 U (under 10) the largest available in the US. 11-15 would be considered "jumbo" by most any classification system. I've been lucky to have even bigger, in the hospitable warm and food rich waters of Southeast Asia.. I've also had the pleasure of purchasing shrimp right off the boats in both New Orleans and along the Texas Gulf Coast. These day's, Frank's daughters run the four current locations while developing more expansion plans. The menu is brief. Buy by the plate, pound, or partial pound. Fried shrimp (regular), Chicago style (spiced fried), Catfish, Scallops, Perch, Chicken Strips and Frog Legs. Sides include fries, rings, zucchini, slaw, and a few other items. The top price on the menu is $20 / pound for the shrimp, a fairly reasonable price. Eat in or take out. I opted for some Chicago style shrimp and some cat, with a few fries on the side. Everything was fried perfectly and the 'seasoned' pieces had a slight hint of heat. Shrimp are good sized with just the right firmness, and cooked when you order. A choice of condiments is offered: seafood sauce, bbq, tartar, lemon juice, and one other I forgot already. This is great stuff. read more
