Hand roll
Max B.

In only a couple of visits Yi Sushi Omakase has made it look too easy to claim my heart as my favorite sushi place, certainly in Louisville, but also at this point I'd put it ahead of even the best places in other cities I've been. But I recognize it is a lot of hard work that just makes it look easy. This is the sort of place I almost don't want to post a public review to keep a personal "secret". My brother was talking about Yi Sushi Omakase for weeks before I tried it the first time. His advice (and now mine), trust the restaurant that put "omakase" (a Japanese term for "prixe fixe" or "chef's special", perhaps most literally "i'll leave it up to you") in its name to do what it does best and deliver whatever the chef is most proud of and thinks is freshest. I trust the chef, here, and I think you should too. The long and narrow "shotgun" design of the Highlands building provides a cozy and intimate setting that almost feels like the proper form for this sort of sushi place. In both my trips the bar has felt comfortable and welcoming, like a trip home or to a regular spot, even when not yet recognizably a regular. One of the reasons I feel like keeping Yi Sushi Omakase almost a secret, keeps coming back to the incredible quality of the fish. When ordering the omakase, I have been truly spoiled every time. Fish is fresh in ways that are hard to describe. Fish is fatty in ways that I know sushi places in other cities would charge me three and four times the price for. So far I keep paying the bill and wondering if they missed a digit, and that's an incredibly good feeling to have. I want to be spoiled. I can only hope that that stays this way as more people discover this gem. From what I've heard the chef claims there's no deeper secret than this city's unique relationship with UPS and the fresh fish markets that enable. In general, I agree, Louisville seems spoiled with fresh seafood of all sorts other cities can only dream of having easy and regular access to. I still think there's some magic that Yi Sushi Omakase has even beyond that. I'm willing to bet it is an understanding of the market other chefs don't quite have, and it probably involves a lot of hard work that the restaurant makes seems quite easy when you sit comfortably in the bar and have it served to you as a series of incredibly delicious courses. I said it before, and it probably bears repeating; I trust the chef, here, and I think you should too, I think the chef wants to spoil us and keep us happy, and as long as that is the case I'm going to keep returning. I love feeling spoiled. I've paid a lot more for sushi half as good. I want this place to thrive and I'm willing to risk its "secret" to know this place is half as well appreciated as it deserves to be. This is, from everything my travels have taught me, a world-class place, and I love it.

I know they have omakase, which I really need to go back for but their rolls were soooo delicious & refreshing honestly the best sushi I've ever had in Lou with just nigiri!

Miso soup and California maki.

Once we figured out the door was on the side of the building, we entered to find a mostly empty restaurant. We decided to sit at the bar where we were greeted quickly. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. They have a nice drink selection. And I compliment them on using paper straws. Our drinks and food arrived quickly. We were given complimentary edamame, which was tasty. Miso soup was good. California roll (maki) was pretty good (and the smaller size made them much easier to eat). They have beautiful decor. There was a sushi bar in the back (in case other reviewers haven't mentioned that). It was easy to have a conversation due to there not being many people and no loud music playing. Temperature inside was comfortable (I usually get cold inside during summer months because places like to crank up the air conditioning). They have a very nice outside patio that faces Bardstown Rd. Since we walked, I cannot comment about parking (but Bardstown Rd is usually a challenge on weekend evenings, just as a heads up). Didn't use the restroom but would guess it's very nice and clean since the restaurant is new. Just out of curiosity, we decided to ask what a Makers Mark on the rocks would cost. The answer was $14. Personally, I think the prices were a bit too high considering the competition they have within two to three blocks. Overall, I would recommend giving this place a try. It would be great for a first date or romantic dinner.

Love the aesthetic of the restaurant definitely an upscale chic but comfortable. The service was attentive and nice. I really enjoyed the host. Now the food was spectacular! Of the starters the calamari was my fave! The sauce was fantastic definitely not your ordinary sweet chili! The sushi was star absolutely. You ca taste the quality of the tuna in the texture and taste. Also don't skip dessert the Japanese cheesecake was quite tasty! Overall, it's definitely a place to return to again!

We had an amazing date night at this Japanese restaurant in Louisville, KY The selection of fish and courses curated by chef- I think the best sushi place in a town to be honest I also loved their hose made warm sake

Wagyu gyoza

Small, chic sushi omakase. Divine. Great service. Great food and cocktails. I did a mocktail today, and it was delish, I got the lychee sunrise. It is not noted on the menus but they do offer mocktails. For apps I did the calamari, and tuna rice and it was phenomenal. My friend let me try her waygu gyoza and it blew my socks off. We also ordered the wagyu fried rice to share and it was up to par. For rolls I wanted to try two different types so I did the dragon fire roll and the rolls Royce and everything was so fresh and tasted amazing. But for next time I would do without the spicy mayo and eel sauce on top. I feel like it can take away from the roll and how good it already is. We shared some dessert and called it a night. Definitely a fun spot to hang with friends, family or have a fancy date.

To start, the interior of this building is absolutely stunning. The minute you walk in, it feels like an elevated experience. Our server seemed new, there were a few mildly awkward moments, but I appreciated the attentive service. The warm towels and complimentary edamame for the table was a nice touch that really elevated the mood. We came in wanting to try some of the appetizers and specialty rolls. The crispy tuna rice was delicious, I thought the flavors of the tuna and crunch of the rice was amazing. I only wish the menu had a little more detail explaining the other elements of this dish! We also tried the wagyu fried rice, my boyfriend loved it. The meat was tender and flavors were great. The specialty rolls were also unique and worth trying. My only comment here is that while the dishware was beautiful, I wish all the rolls had come out together and on one plate to make more space on the table. The volcano shrimp was good and we liked that the Cajun shrimp was something we hadn't seen before in a sushi roll, although it didn't end up being our favorite. The fiesta heat was our next try, and was also good but not as spicy as we had expected. I think a fresh jalapeño would have been more refreshing and spicy than the pickled. Finally, we had the dragon fire roll which was an easy favorite. The tobiko was appealing to the eye but the flavors were nothing beyond the classics. At this point, we were absolutely stuffed. We had a nice to-go box given to us and left satisfied. Another recommendation would be that to keep up with the elevated experience, they could consider boxing your meal for you or providing a bag.

Amazing QUALITY sushi.

What can I say? Louisville FINALLY has a QUALITY sushi restaurant -- and hint, it's not in NuLu. Delicious with a priority on the fish quality before anything else. They are the only place in town that I'll eat otoro or blue fin tuna at after being bamboozled at Ruby's (which I still love for steak). The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Shoutout to Maki who has taken care of my fam and friends on multiple visits. Some of my favorite raw bar apps are the crispy rice tuna, yellowtail serrano or scallops crudo. I'm not a huge roll fan, but the Triple Toro is my favorite sushi roll as it is loaded with toro and salmon belly. I will speak no ill will to other sushi spots in town, but I feel obligated to tell everyone I know that if you are looking to for a great date night or to actually impress someone from outside our city with good fish then this is the only place you can go. There are a couple of other "hip" spots, but they both lack in quality of fish.

White Dragon Roll

We came for an early dinner on a Wednesday and it was empty for our entire meal. Maybe it's just the day or time but we were greeted warmly and sat immediately. Very modernist design on the interior. We started with a bottle of Sake (of course) and my wife got the Omakase experience. Oh my! Just look at the pictures! I on the other hand got the Wagyu Gyoza and three rolls. I got the Triple Toro, Spider, and White Dragon rolls. Then the brought us half prices of Match and Yuzu cheesecake. So good! We will absolutely be back!!! We were both so satisfied with what we got!

Great service. Beautiful decor. Fresh sushi. Nice upscale spot for girls night or date night.

Ocean king roll

Sat at the sushi bar and watched the magic happen! This is some of the best sushi I've ever had. The king crab and all of the fish are so fresh, the omakase is a perfect meal, and the chefs are super attentive! Such a fun place to eat.

I've been a few times now and it's always very chill and relaxing, and I love the music selection. When you walk in the plant shop is in the front and the bar is in the back. I recommend heading to the bar, grabbing a delicious hand crafted cocktail and relaxing for a bit. However if you're super eager to shop grab a cocktail to enjoy while you walk around the store. I've only ever had the Carajillo bc it's so damn good. It's light, refreshing and delicious. It consists of dark matter cold brew, Licor 43, Paranubes Cafe de Olla, Alma Tepec pasilla chile liqueur, hazelnut, cinnamont. They have the best mezcal by the bottle selection which I believe you can purchase some online. While sitting at the bar, I noticed all the bottles neatly displayed on the shelf behind the bar and none of the labels are ones I've ever seen before. In addition to being able to shop for plants, they also offer Plant workshops that you can sign up for online! Some of the workshops include a price for two people so pay attention to what you're signing up for. And if you happen to get hungry and need a snack, they also offer a few light bar snacks that consists of chips and salsa, spicy oaxacan peanuts, spicy pickled carrots, and Nemi Mexican lime crunchy snack.

Behind the lush greenery and unassuming storefront is Pretty Decent, a mezcal bar that's anything but "pretty decent"--it's ridiculously cool. My only regret is that I didn't get more pictures to share because this place is very cool. But I was enjoying myself too much to be bothered with my phone. The vibe? Immaculately chill. Moody lighting, thoughtful design, and a playlist that makes you want to stay all night. It's the kind of place that feels like a secret you're lucky to be in on. We started with a Paloma recommended by Ethan (bartender and apparently low-key rockstar). It was refreshing, perfectly balanced, and an excellent recommendation.. We chatted mezcal, music, and more--Ethan's the kind of bartender who makes you feel like a regular on your first visit. Got to talk mezcal with the owner, John, who's clearly passionate and seriously knowledgeable. He shared stories about sourcing, traveling, and working directly with producers. Learned more in 10 minutes from him than I have from any spirit tasting I've done. Super generous with his time and samples, which led to me walking out with a bottle of Espadín, an agave spirit, I'm now obsessed with. You don't find places like this often. It's got soul, character, and people who actually care about what they're doing. Come for the plants, stay for the mezcal. Pretty Decent? Nah--Pretty Damn Exceptional.
