Our first experience was a 3, but the 2nd visit was a 5, so 4 average. (The only reason we came back was because it's so busy at the other restaurants you need a reservation. We were not even there at peak season, and it was a weekday. Definitely plan your restaurants well in advance.) I think the difference was this: what you order and what time you go. The burgers are great. The vegetarian options are excellent, particularly the quinoa tofu bowl. The pot roast was dreadful - a pile of fat the size of my fist. The burrito was extremely average and mostly onions. The service in early dinner hour is excellent, super attentive and friendly. As it gets later and busier it's still friendly but you're pretty much on your own, no waters refilled or check-ins. The building itself is a must-see and worth going. I don't understand all the poor reviews. Our experience was pretty good especially when you think about the difficulty of serving hoards of people in a remote location. Think about what it takes to get food and labor 100 miles from a major metropolitan area. The prices are reasonable and the food was serviceable. I had a burger with fries. Service was very friendly. They did their best to try to help me figure out what i could eat. Being gluten free and vegan there were not a ton of options. Breakfast was definitely more complicated. They did have the beyond meat or impossible breakfast sausages. So I was able to get that and some fruit. This was the last place I ate in the Grand Canyon before returning and you know it was pretty good. If Maswik is like the fast food end of the dining spectrum and El Tovar is on the fancier end of the spectrum then Fred Harvey falls squarely in the middle; consider it like the Applebee's of dining options at the South Rim. The wait for FH was so long for lunch/dinner when I went but breakfast was...well it was also long but since I had a few hours to wait for the train to arrive and the trail conditions so bad I didn't feel like continuing any hikes. We still managed to get seated fairly quickly so I got to try eat off the breakfast menu. They had something called breakfast nachos and that seemed interesting. What I ended up getting was ok. It looked like it was put together without any care or attention. It was a couple of pieces of fry bread and then someone basically just dropped a scoop of pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and then just haphazardly splattered nacho cheese, eggs and some let's say not so appetizing looking sausage. This used to be the Fred Harvey Burger & Tavern but looks like the name was recently changed to Fred Harvey Tavern. The ambience is definitely more of a tavern or bar feel so I can see the reason for the name change. It's more of a bar with some food instead of a restaurant with a bar menu. The wait staff are friendly and the bartender we had was a lot of fun. He even made one of his off-menu drinks which was delicious. The drinks are far better than the food. The food was typical American bar food. Nothing unique or special about it. We each had the double bacon cheeseburger and chips and queso as an appetizer. The fries were fairly good. We originally wanted to try the American Steakhouse but had to have reservations in advance. There's limited dining options at the Grand Canyon park so we might eat here again if we come back one day but we will also try to make reservations for some of the restaurants as well! read more

We were seated at the cocktail bar after about a 40 minute wait on a Thursday at 4. The bartender/server was really great. Our sandwiches came with side salads that came out within a minute of being ordered and everything else shortly behind which was appreciated since we were starving. After hiking the Grand Canyon all day this seemed to be one of the only restaurants where there wasn't a dress code. It did the trick for some very hungry hikers, but not on the top of my list. The restaurant is attached to a lodge so you actually walk through to be seated. There's a gift shop too which I wish we had time to browse. We were seated in the dining room, I asked for a canyon view because it's amazing right?! Anyways, there was a very strong smell of smoke the entire time we were seated. Ended up missing the sunset over the canyon outside and we had a long drive back home. We saw the sunset inside but still would have nice to see outside. First off, this is Fred Harvey Tavern, and it's amazing. Closest thing to your neighborhood watering hole in the Grand Canyon Village. When we arrived, the host told us we were looking at a 30-35 minute wait, and he wasn't keeping a list. We were skeptical, but we waited. This guy's mind is a steel trap, and we were seated at the bar in less than 15 minutes. The bartender was Brenda from Arkansas, and she's a hoot. Genuinely hospitable, funny, and makes a mean cocktail! The house-brined cherries and muddled orange in her Old Fashioned made it crazy good. The Grand Canyon branded Merlot isn't the best you'll ever have. But, it meets muster at the price point. The Fred Harvey Burger is ridiculous. Just do it because you'll hike it off tomorrow. She just stayed in the back by the waitstaff computers. Eventually a different waiter came over and said they would serve us because they couldn't "find" the other waiter. This all felt off, and then while we were waiting for our foods, a few groups of white people came to be seated, and they were sat and waited on immediately. It seemed like there could be some bias /prejudice against people of color by the staff. Regarding the food, we ordered the burger. It was barely edible. They must freeze their buns and then defrost them as needed. The buns were both stale and crumbly. The burgers are precooked and reheated, so you can only get a well done burger. The fries were like cardboard. The waiter even told us they don't eat the restaurant because the food grosses them out. That should tell you everything you need to know. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner after our big hike (S. Kaibab to Phantom Ranch to Bright Angel) and also for breakfast the next morning. Although the food is not really that great, it's the best option for those staying in Bright Angel Lodge. It's essentially a casual sit down restaurant located right off the lobby. On Saturday after our hike, there was a little bit of a wait (maybe only 10 mins) and then on Sunday morning, we were seated right away around 8a (this was in November, so not peak season). What makes me so sad about this place is that the menu has the story of Fred Harvey, who was an entrepreneur who opened up various meal houses along rest stops on the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe line back in the late 1800's. What they specifically called out was that he did this to ensure travelers had fresh GOOD food because all of the other places had stale, rotten food they served. And now in ironies of ironies, a place that bears his name serves extremely subpar food. For instance, the bun on my cheeseburger was a tad hard. (If it were my at home, it would have been one of those buns that I forced myself to eat because I didn't want to waste it, while knowing that it was probably past its expire date.) We also ordered the cookie sundae, which I was super excited about because I love those. I assumed it would come out with a warm delicious cookie and ice cream. Well it was a cookie that obviously come out of the box and was ROCK HARD!! My boyfriend and I were laughing because you couldn't even cut into it with a fork or knife. It was that hard. Ughhh. Breakfast was definitely a better experience. Although I asked if they could make me scrambled egg whites and I was told no.
