It's not a bad story. It's just in a really bad part of town. Parking lot is huge, but I wouldn't wanna park in that parking lot because people approached your vehicles and ask for money or just break into your car. **Store closure notice** Our business with Fred Meter, especially this location has been a complex one. It was one of mixed feelings where on a company level we felt welcome but this location itself gave us plenty of hassle. The corner of 72nd and Pacific is a colorful place as you often get surly individuals on the corner and therefore it spills into the parking lot. Once or twice we felt a bit uncomfortable encountering characters in the parking lot and it wasn't us just being paranoid if they have portable security cameras in the parking lot. But that is actually minor to other frustrations we have encountered. We have looked here for produce several different times. Nothing exotic but for example we were looking for jalapeños and looked all over the produce section but they had nada so we had to go to Safeway also to finish our grocery shopping. I know, one stop shopping concept is a marketing dinosaur but it sure feels like you are getting errands done when you can successfully do a one stop shop. But on the flip side while planning our lunches for the week while at work everything would fall into place time and time again to make that come together nicely. But what really kept us away for several years in fact was that we saw a rat scurrying down an aisle once while in this store. I don't know if te store janitorial team fell down on their jobs or if it came in by chance through the automatic doors but the idea of that thing nestled in the grocery shelves and nibbling on the produce at night kept us far, far away. But times have changed in the world and DEI policies that companies had rolled them back. Kroger, the company that owns Fred Meyer would not do this so it made us cautiously return to this location feeling we would be welcome to shop here. Those few times were free of incident for the most part, nothing to drive us away again. But then we heard this Fred Meyer would close in September 2025 for Kroger to save money and to close stored that have a high shrink in their inventory or in other words stores with high theft. It totally makes sense this store would be one but we didn't know how bad until it got the chopping block. The residents that live nearby are in an uproar because there isn't another grocery store within walking distance or close driving proximity and their reasoning for being upset makes sense. Just throw more complexity onto the pile. I don't know and it doesn't appear to be closing sales at this location so I imagine the inventory will get redistributed to remaining stores or go to warehouses for a period of time. So instead of this review being a retail carcass picking event notice it's more of a you got a longer drive/walk ahead of you event notice. read more

This Fred Meyer is one of the larger ones I've visited, located right off Pacific Ave with two main entrances. The store layout was clean and organized, and I noticed they're implementing a one-way entrance/exit system with security staff on both sides. Personally, I thought it added a sense of control without feeling intrusive. Unfortunately, the parking lot left a lot to be desired. There were lots of sketchy activity and a confusing design that made traffic flow awkward and frustrating. I also saw employees smoking right outside the building, which detracts from the store's overall presentation. Restrooms were locked and in rough shape, which was disappointing. On the upside, the aisles inside were very well stocked, which made shopping smooth. If they cleaned up the exterior and restroom situation, this could be a go-to location. This Fred Meyer is a total different Fred Meyer from those that have gone to. It is sad that this place represents the surrounding dilapidated buildings or just poor outer appearance of some businesses. There is high crime and homelessness. When you go in this Fred Meyer, they are so frustrated with homeless people and the crimes it reflects how we are treated as customers. There is a Starbucks, various businesses inside too. There is that Vista Optical( read my review). This is one of our large Fred Meyers but it is not exactly a welcoming atmosphere. Restrooms are locked and employees have to let you in restrooms. I personally am not comfortable not having freedom to use restroom. But it is related to the abuse of drugs and homeless people washing up in the restrooms. So now customers are just treated aweful. I know today my husband needed a seat while we waited for his eye appointment but there was no seats! We were going to grab a Starbucks coffee but no seats! I got frustrated because my husband and I walk on canes and that morning air flared up our bodies a bit. So we were in a bit of pain from walking around finding a seat. My husband got in a motor cart. lol I went to get a few supplies while he waited for appointments. This place is one of big Freddy's but customers can't really enjoy it much. We did not enjoy our store experience very much. We will not step foot in this area again. This areas needs TLC and employees need to feel safe so they can provide quality service again. And please put seats in the Starbucks for goodness sake. There is security here. The security was the only friendly there. At least he knows how to be friendly and polite to customers lol! read more

This particular Fred Meyer location has been going downhill for some time and it seems like it only continues. Even though the inside has been slightly remolded, I feel like it made it more chaotic to navigate through the aisles since there isn't an opening in the middle of the aisles anymore. Ok- This store is VERY BAD; prices are Insane and way out of hand. And me and my lady recently almost made the mistake of eating some "private selection" brand chocolate croissants from there which were labeled - "Freshly made daily in-store." THEY SMELLED AND TASTED LIKE RATS HAD BEEN LIVING IN THE BOX and nestling in the damn pastries! This is not an exaggeration. I opened one up to see the chocolate resembled what looked like crumbly scab ridden infected dry paste which smelled like a mixture of rat droppings and mold. We paid $7 for this, whoever is in the bakery or responsible for food safety - I really wish I could have a word with you. You need to be fired, and this store needs to do way better. The parking lot is not the best, Late at night it gets super sketchy because of all the homeless. The bathrooms are disgusting, because some customers don't clean up after themselves! Fred Meyer has hired the Gestapo to harass their customers at the exit to check receipts. They harass me wanting to see my receipt. When I left the checkout clerk, my business was done with Fred Meyer, & the Groceries in the cart were now mine, not the stores. My receipt is also mine, not the store or the Gestapo's. I told the Gestapo that he didn't need to see my receipt. He wisely told me OK, go on. Had he not done so, I would have then asked for the manager. If I got no satisfaction with the manager, I would have went to customer service & demanded my money back, & the store would have lost the sale they just made, & would have had pay an employee to put the groceries back on the shelf. I hate to give such a low rating for this neighborhood Fred Meyer. The topic I most dislike about this store is there are never any carts or baskets. I've noticed many people ranted about this already. 4 out of 5 times, I will walk into the store and there are no carts to be found. The ones that ARE available, are not working or broken. If I do come here, I try to spot a cart that's available in the parking lot. A lot of the carts I noticed, are being used for employee use. Yes, that is important too, but you will see cart after cart just parked there with no one working with them. The parking is also not the greatest. They're really close together, and you must be careful backing out. My recent visit, I had less than 15 items, but the lines were so long, including self check out. I went towards the last line near the garden entrance. The girl who was cashiering asked if I mind bagging my own groceries since I brought my own bags. I do understand why... at the same time, will you still charge me for bags if I have you bag my own things? There was a gentleman in a wheel chair behind me that also brought his own bags. I wonder if she asked him to bag his own stuff as well. I can understand if staffing is short. Maybe that's why the lines have been longer, but customer service could be friendlier. Despite all the topics I've vented about, they normally do carry everything a grocery store needs to, the prices are reasonable, and they do have their gas station available. I would beware going there late at night. I've seen people there just squatting, hanging out, charging their phones there, drinking, and then leaving. I assume they're waiting for the bus or just taking a break from walking to where they need to go... but it is pretty sketchy. I think they should just redo the store completely, including the parking lot, staff up, and make this store a more pleasant place to shop. I have been going here for 20 years, today is the day I stop. 2 Cashiers at noon. Self check out the lines were huge. I decided to just stay patient at wait for one of the cashiers. 30 minutes it took me to get to the Cashier. Nice enough lady, I thanked her for her patience. I go to leave and a security guard is checking everyone's receipts. I had to wait another 30 minutes. My fiancé and I went there tonight to get groceries. We went to the self check out line because they only had one cashier working at 6:00 at night. Had to have a person come scan a number every time we exceed a certain amount of items. We also were buying some alcoholic drinks and we both grab are IDs so the African American lady could check. She was so rude and disrespectful to us when we showed her both our ids for the alcohol. Yes you only need to scan one id but you are still by law to check all ids when buying alcohol. We also made the comment of you guys should have more registers open. The African American lady said well you came to the self checkout stand. I have went in multiple times to get my prescription or my daughters and EVERY SINGLE TIME there is some issue. yesterday we went in to get her medication around noon they said it won't be ready and we're getting ready to go on break until 2pm that day at 1, mind you.. it just hit noon but okay.. then so we came back the next day (today) at 10 am and the same exact lady said it won't be ready until 2 pm we said "you said that yesterday" she said well it's not ready til 2 pm and was disrespectful. I just got a notification that they don't have her medication and are putting in an order for it, mind you this was put in days ago for her to get. I'm done with this fred Meyer and their terrible service, and they always want to accuse people of stealing for no reason. TERRIBLE SERVICE -10/10 do not recommend going here. read more

The store is chronically understaffed, with far too few check out lanes open and staffed during peak hours of business. A high percentage of their carts are in disrepair, the wheels locked or so clogged with detritus that they are obnoxiously noisy. Please staff your store and maintain your carts. Checking out can take 30 minutes or more of waiting in line before reaching a cashier. read more

A ways out in the sticks however they had just what I needed! Did you know that Fred Meyers is the only grocery in town that sells Jelly Belly beans in bulk? This is true. I needed them for a project at work and one store called the other to be sure someone had the kiosk...Found it! I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in this Fred Meyer at 72nd and Pacific. It is NOT handicap helpful. the parking lot holds over 350 spaces, yet near the main entrance there are only six handicap spots. And they aren't even in the first row, those are still general parking. My biggest complaint is that there are only four motorized shopping carts available for use, and two of those I am told are usually broken. They don't keep any at the far south end where there are a few more handicap spots near the general product section, but I usually go for the grocery section. Carts aren't always put on the charger, probably because the people using them can't bend over and plug it in (maybe put the outlet a 3 feet up the wall?) Store employee should be better prepared to look for these things and plug them in regularly. There should be more than four carts, and more than two that work. I went to the store tonight and the parking lot was full I had to wait for a parking space (one of the 6 on the grocery side), and when I came in there was one cart that was charging. I tried it anyway, but it was one of the ones where the charge light doesn't work so you can't tell if it's powered or not. I have lost power on these things twice while I'm in the store, and embarrassingly have to sit and wait for an employee to walk by to go get me another cart. Amigos is a much better brand of store scooter, btw. I'm going to have to stop shopping here. It's hard enough to find a parking place, but if I have to walk the store at all, try to find a scooter, I'm in severe pain. I am fortunate that this is a temporary condition, however it certainly opened my eyes to the horrible treatment that is given to those who can't get around very well. Shame on you Fred Meyer. This Fred Meyer is the WORST Fred Meyer in all of Tacoma. The water spouts is literally pouring water off the side of the building like a dang water fall; into the walk way of the customer. The carts are dirty, rusty and the wheels never work; not to mentioned the carts are all over the eastside of Tacoma due to the transient populations. The staff is always rude, they act like they don't want to be there and if you ask them a question they always have something smart to say. One cashier was yelling all the way down the isle to the other. It is dirty inside and out the parking lot is littered with disposable face mask and garbage. On the inside, the floors look like they haven't been waxed in decades, and the store has an overall dingy feeling compared to other Fred Meyer stores I have shopped in. Pan-handlers at every door and a lot of sketch stuff always going on in the parking lot. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. read more

I really don't seem to learn and it really bothers me. Maybe it's the busyness of life that I don't spend the time to research something. At 72 I doubt I'm going to change very much even though I would like to. I would definitely stay away from this optical department. I paid for a prescription that was not right. And I knew it! I found to be a waste of money. I went and retested at Walmart in Spanaway with a person that has been there doing this for 5 years at this store. Sorry to say but this Fred Meyer store optical department is a little wacky. In my opinion. Worse than that I was sent to a specialist to have cataracts and glaucoma fixed. I knew I had a boxing injury and that's what they were looking at in one eye anyway. And I'm sure that I probably have cataracts that don't affect my site. But I certainly did not need to go get surgery. Being smarter than the average duck ,I got a second opinion that I trusted. I went to a different eye doctor getting a prescription that was different and accurate in my opinion True I had a slight case of glaucoma and minor cataracts at 72 years old which is just common. My experience at Fred Meyer was adequate and the store met my shopping needs; however, it definitely could have been better. The parking lot surrounding the store is large; however, I had a hard time figuring out the best place to put my vehicle. The signage of the grocery store is not located above the entrance. The entrance was obscure and unlike that of a typical store. I might have missed them but I did not see shopping baskets stacked near the carts when I entered the store. I stacked my items in my arms until I finally found a basket at a self-check-out station. Along a similar vein, nobody spoke to me while I wandered around the store until I got to the cashier. I'm used to someone greeting me or offering some assistance. Although Fred Meyer carried a wide variety of items spanning clothing, books, alcohol, produce, and other foods, it was my opinion that they didn't have many choices for particulars. For example, I'm used to having a wide selection of cream cheeses including choices for fat-content, flavor, and brand. Fred Meyer had fewer choices than other stores. I was pleased when the cashier made friendly banter with me while scanning my items. She offered me their rewards card that can also be used at Kroger stores. The rewards card is good for tracking purchases and collecting points. I was also pleased with the price of my purchases. I got almond/coconut milk, chicken tenders, rice, matcha tea, frozen beans, frozen broccoli, french fries, cream cheese, buns, and black bean burgers for about $26. read more

I wanted to purchase a LEGO set, so I did a search online to see which stores carried the set. I saw that Fred Meyer had a sale on that particular set, so I called my local store (Port Orchard) to see if they had any in stock. I was informed that they had just sold their last one, but the associate checked other stores and saw that University Place had a few and this store had a couple. I called the Tacoma 19th Street Fred Meyer, first, as it was closer to me, but they were out. Then, I called University Place, the next closest, and they were also out. Finally, I called this store, and they were out, too. At that point, the associate asked for my name and number and said she would call some other stores and get back to me by the next morning. Based on what shipping is like, so close to Christmas, I decided to check other retailers and do a price match. Within an hour, I had found one at a different store close by. By the time I got to my car to head to that store, the associate called me back and explained that she had found one in Federal Way, and she had arranged for a manager to go pick it up and drive it to their store that evening. I even told her I was willing to go to Federal Way, but she insisted. I was absolutely floored. Considering how busy stores are during this time of the year, the fact that they cared enough to go through all that trouble for me completely made my holiday. I've always had positive experiences with Fred Meyer stores, but this store is obviously going above and beyond the norm. The first time I came here was for a money order and they were out, plus the bank was closed. It was a saturday. The second time I came here it was also a saturday and we got there on time and the bank had closed earlier than the time posted. We got there at 1 PM and it says it's open until 2 PM. Also the parking here is atrocious! It's confusing because there aren't enough signs, but also no one pays attentions to the ones they have or the arrows painted on the ground. It's hard to tell who has right of way because of how bad the layout is. I won't be back here unless it's absolutely nessisary. Went to the customer service area, walked up to the counter (totally ignoring the sign that says wait to be called, which totally is my fault) a worker by the name of "anana" She kept on staring at me like "wtf is she doing standing there." ( I was actually trying to grab the cash out of my purse) I'm not sure if that's her name spelled correctly but she gave me this most stank attitude all because I asked to do a second transaction to purchase a book of stamps. Mind you I had cash only for the first transaction I had for two money orders and I had CARD ONLY for the second transaction, because I wouldn't have enough cash to use for the stamps. She said in a rude tone " I could have just done it all in the same transaction." After she said that, I was thinking in my head, "wow does she talk to every customer like that??" I was actually being polite during this entire situation. As I was walking in aisles looking for groceries, I over heard this other worker walk past me and say "I ain't buying no damn pedigree for a dog its too expensive." Some of these cashiers need a customer service class or something because that is not how you behave around customers that purchase your items. I feel like most workers there don't care at all. I went to the 72nd and Pacific Fred Meyer at 7:15 a.m. today for the senior and at risk hour. The store was not crowded but there was no screening. About 1/2 of the customers were young people who were probably not at risk. The store was not ready to serve the customers. The Deli and Pharmacy were not open and ready. There were many employees still stocking shelves with large carts blocking the aisles. Cardboard boxes on the floor where they were stocking shelves. No paper towels or tp on the shelves. Appears that the store opened an hour early without being ready. Not a good experience for the expanded hour for elderly and at risk. read more
