Took a class in March 2017. It was an organized class and Frederick was very knowledgeable. I did have to miss 2 classes due to a family illness. The fact I missed classes was not accepted very well and I was not accommodated at all to come in and finish my piece. I called months later to inquire about finally finishing the piece and I was told it was discarded. Not a very friendly way of conducting local business. read more

I signed up for Fred's beginner class last year and really learned a lot. I like that he does not overload the classes so he can give his attention to each student as needed. Since the class has ended I have continued to work on small projects and have been able to utilize Fred's space for a nominal fee. He gives me as much attention while there as he did when I was taking the beginner class and his expertise is invaluable to me. Drive by the shop in the evening and prepare to be awed, staring at the front window FULL of stunning glass creations. (Most of them are for sale.) Then, park the car and go drool on the shop window a little. Sadly, I drove past this shop for YEARS without stopping in. Only a near-tragedy with hundred year old art glass sidelights and a transom caused me to stop in and ask for repair pricing. Don't I wish I'd made time to stop in years earlier!!! Fredrick Redinger is a craftsman. And, he has a unique talent for teaching the basics of his craft. A lot of people who know how to do something well have no idea how to impart that information or skill to their students. Fred can and does, in four short weeks. I've taken his beginner class and now I design and build my own art glass pieces with a decent amount of confidence. Yes, I'm a fan. He has repaired and restored my aging windows, made invisible repairs to a delicate stained glass lamp I damaged, and he designed and built a double-hung window for my guest bath. I would trust him with any repair or commission (I see some incredible church and private residence windows coming and going from his shop, and sometimes he puts the newly-restored pieces in the shop window until their owners come in to pick them up.) If you make your own glass pieces, he's got a ton of supplies and sheets of colored and textured glass on hand, too. I keep telling people it's kind of like stepping into a 'Harry Potter' type shop in Diagon Alley. Maybe the wand shop. It's kind of magical inside. read more

I commissioned a stained glass window of Mt McKinley with a different artist whom I will not name here, but it was a disaster in every possible way. It was intended to be a gift for my fiancee, who grew up in Alaska. It was so bad, we ended up persuading the original artist to take the window back for a refund of most of the money. Then we went to Fredrick, who is an amazing artist. He was dogged in his attention to the details, making sure he understood our needs, and spending time with us. The window he created is so beautiful and so vibrant, we sometimes just stand around looking at it. He is that good. He's also kind of fun to hang out with and makes you feel comfortable in his shop. You walk into an intimate shop/work room and can see the quality of pieces he is working on - the most amazing glimpses of old Chicago; lovingly being restored. So, I gave him my two small stained glass windows from my apartment and he brought them back to life in a way I couldn't even visualize. He is not just a repair shop; or a classroom (he offers classes) - he is an artist who understands Stained Glass the way a painter understands oil versus watercolor versus pencil. Googled stained glass supplies and Frederick came up, and glad it did. Needed 6 small rectangular pieces to replace broken and faded ones in my outside scones. The wind blew my table with umbrella and it broke two panels. Anyway, we took time with me to help me pick a color and also took time to decide the best way to cut then to show off best color. I needed a reproduction of a vintage window and looked around at many stores but Fredrick was the man and the artisan I went to (and I looked around at at least 7 more places). He had completed a repair of the window I needed to have reproduced seven or more years ago and it was beautiful and such excellent work. Well the new window (which required a new design becasue the dimensions were different) is really beautiful and was completed so quickly that I was able to have my contractor in and I had my window in before Christmas and it is so beautiful and truly awesome. The price was the best and the work is great and he takes alot of time and care in helping pick the colors and types of glass needed to complete the work. I had a stained glass window from my nearly 100 yr. old Chicago Bungalow that needed repair. Frederick was fantastic to work with. Responded to the picture I sent him and had it repaired in a matter of a few days for a very good price. He was professional and an artist. He replaced a piece of missing glass perfectly. I was looking for some glass to use in a project and called around to locate art glass. Restoration places wanted an outrageous price to cut what I already owned... online sources wanted just as much for shipping as it would be for just the glass. Fredrick? Affordable, affable, easy to get to and had great suggestions. It's actually really hard to find a stained glass supply source near Chicago. He cut the pieces I needed with obvious practice. His pieces are really masterful and it's obvious that he knows a lot about glass and making/repairing lamps and other stained glass projects. Totally recommend going here. I would definitely call ahead to check hours but if it was a nice day out and I was the owner... I think I would close a little early too. read more

I'd taken a beginner class at another shop, and when that closed down, I looked for another. I came upon Fredrick's site and have been going there ever since, for over two years now. Fred is not only an excellent instructor with a mastery of technique, he has a fantastic eye for design. If I have any criticism, it's that he's only open to classes/students on Saturdays (he needs the shop free for commission work during the week). I'd be there every day if I could. If you are looking for custom work, you can't find a better artisan. He's not always warm and fuzzy, but he will always give you the straight dope on the work you need. read more

I came in on Monday, hoping to find a piece of stained glass made for a kitchen renovation. I didn't have high hopes that I would find a piece that I liked, and fit the space. Fred said that he could make me a custom piece and have it done within a week, so we picked the pattern and colors and I was out the door. The VERY NEXT DAY it was complete - and for a very reasonable price. It looks beautiful and I would recommend for all of your stained glass needs.
