Fred's Coffee Shop is such a great find in Sausalito! It's in a fantastic location and has that classic old-school diner vibe, and the food definitely lives up to it. Parking was easy to find, which is always a win in Sausalito. There were seats available inside, but we chose to sit outside since we had our dogs with us. The patio was comfortable, and the service was quick and friendly, which made the whole experience even better. The breakfast menu has plenty of healthy options alongside all the traditional diner favorites like pancakes and egg scrambles. Fred's Coffee Shop is such a gem. Never had I ordered a scramble egg and enjoyed it because it would always be dry and overcooked at other cafes, but it was perfection. My toddler also ate a good portion of it so that's a good sign. The classic eggs Benedict was covered in a generous amount of well-flavored hollandaise sauce and a beautifully cooked poached egg. Came here for breakfast during a weekend in Sausalito to fuel up before 3/5 food. I ordered the blackstone benedict which I thought was pretty good. The fred's bacon is similar to candied bacon anywhere, but not as sweet. The hashbrowns are excellent. My partner ordered the pancakes and he said that and the syrup had no flavor. The eggs tasted more like water than egg. 5/5 portions and generosity and service and staff, topped us up on coffee multiple times (even though we really didn't want any) 4/5 the vibes give classic American diner, quick service and easy to dine alone or with family in. I have lived in southern Marin since 1989. I have been to Fred's countless times. I love their fluffy omelettes. They're incredible real Swiss crêpes, the millionaire bacon and the portion sizes are amazing. However, I wanted a quick breakfast sandwich to go and, even though this was a delicious sourdough sandwich, I don't appreciate the high cost. Now everybody would say that's just the way it is. I disagree, if you go by the standard restaurant calculations there is no doubt that $16.35 for a single breakfast sandwich is overpriced and unnecessary. The sandwich took five minutes to make. It had two slices of bacon, one egg, a slice of cheese and two pieces of toast. It didn't come with anything else so if you do the standard restaurant math, they're making 50 to 60% net profit on this sandwich, effectively gouging. This is unsustainable, and I hope restaurants in the Bay Area will consider how expensive they are for how little they provide. Again the sandwich was delicious but should be $9.95 at the most. If you're on vacation and don't mind a pricey tourist trap this is your spot though! read more

The space is set up with smaller seating for an intimate dinner vibe. The gratis chips and salsa was great. Calamari is served hot, crispy, and with two sauces. The grilled fish tacos is served with two filets, rice, beans, and tortillas on the side. You make your own tacos as stacked as you please. Wash it all down with $6 beer. Yep, best price around. Don't believe the low ratings on this place, because those reviewers obviously wouldn't know good food if it bit them in the a$$. We found this gem on our way to Muir Woods and glad we did. The food is delicious here. Staff are all super sweet and attentive. The food comes out fast and the portions are huge! They keep your coffee topped off and will make a latte, too. Our waiter was super sweet and kept checking on our food and drinks. He went out of his way to make me a latte, as well. The atmosphere is quaint and old school diner, nothing fancy! The hashbrowns and toast were alright. Classic eggs benedict: 3/5. The benedict itself was good, but could use a little more salt/flavor. It was the potato medley that really stole the show here! The yams and potatoes were fried to a perfect crisp that enveloped its soft, warm interior. Service: 5/5 We (party of 3) came on a somewhat busy Sunday and were seated pretty quickly. Our food arrived very quickly; the gentleman at the grill was lightning fast! My oatmeal came with brown sugar, cream and craisins. It was your basic, run-of-the-mill oatmeal - decent but nothing too exciting. My husband, however, raved about the french toast and the eggs. He said, "These are the fluffiest eggs I've ever had!" This time dining I chose the 2 eggs over easy with the Hollandaise Hash Browns and I ate every last bite of it, knowing I'd be full but not really caring. Service is friendly and prompt, water glasses and coffee are filled quickly and staff wants to know if the food is good. I miss the communal table but love dining indoors even on a sunny day with the view of the long counter and the grill you know when your order is coming up. I seldom eat lunch in restaurants but I had to check out the breakfast places in Sausalito. This place doesn't look too flashy on the street, and it's not located in the midst touristy part of town. I really wouldn't have noticed it had someone not told me about it saying it's where the locals go. I was also told the sweet bacon is a must try. I rarely find myself in Sausalito, but for some reason, I was curious to take the Golden Gate Transit bus from the Salesforce Transit Center to Marin just to see how long it took. It wasn't too bad, but I found myself feeling peckish and wondering where a local might go to gorge. Strolling up Bridgeway, I saw that this cafe was quite the bustling hive of activity. Clearly this was the place to grab a bite from the grill. I could only secure a seat at the counter, which was honestly just fine by me even with elbows flying. Although I was tempted by their generous breakfast plates, I surprised myself and ordered the $18 Tiger Shrimp Salad, which was a bit short on grilled shrimp. Never been here before and the lady running the place, instead of greeting, instructing, or even acknowledging our presence, doesn't say anything about having to sign ourselves in. Eventually we figure it ourselves. Mind you this lady kept walking in and out, ignoring us. Eventually my friend asks "how long is the wait time?", to which the lady aggressively replies with "long time, you can't come inside", as if we asked to wait or come inside. We waited outside in the freezing cold for at least 20 minutes along with other parties. When the next party was called, we noticed we were about to get skipped, and somehow our name was crossed out. The other guy who works there and communicates in a foreign language with the rude lady, didn't offer any explanation or apology as to why our name was being skipped. I suspect he was already accustomed to the lady's discriminatory and hostile behavior. So I quickly got the message, yet still made the mistake of walking inside, only because I didn't want to ruin my friend's breakfast and waste that long wait time. Not sure what the lady's problem was. Maybe she only wants a certain type of customer in her cafe. Anyway, I will never come back here. I'll save myself money and from getting discriminated against and just go to the Lighthouse next time for better food with better prices and actual service. read more

I ordered the Fat Fred toast and the Fred's Hashbrown (no Bacon). The French toast was really fluffy on the inside and and super crunchy on the outside - it was lighter than I expected for being deep fried and not too sweet! The hashbrowns were the same crunchy exterior and fluffy interior, and the freshness from the veggies with the creaminess from the mild cheddar made each a perfect bite. The outdoor seating has overhead heaters, perfect for even a cloudy or chillier winter. And we ordered AND got served our food within 15 minutes, so it's peak freshness. Absolutely disgusting behavior. Avoid this place at all costs. I have never been treated so horribly by any restaurant. Our child accidentally spilled something -- as kids do -- and instead of responding with even basic human decency, the staff swore at us. Yes, swore at a family with a child. And it gets worse: they actually told us to clean the floor ourselves, barking orders at us like we were an inconvenience they wanted to get rid of. I've never seen such hostility or unprofessionalism from people who claim to be in "hospitality." It was humiliating, aggressive, and completely out of line. Mind you-we've been customers there for over 20 years. If this is how they treat customers -- especially families -- then they don't deserve a single dollar of anyone's business. So, it's been years since I've been to Fred's. Probably like 10 years, at least. I've had it bookmarked to go back for quite some time. Let me just say, I was beyond disappointed. I always remembered the pancakes. Huge. Thin. Well, they're shaped the same, but they tasted like glue (yes, I know what glue tastes like; don't you?). They were bland and chewy. The eggs were nasty too. How in the heck do you mess up eggs? Eggs! The bacon was the best thing on the plate. My mom was with me and she gave it the same thumbs down.
