Every teacher is always thinking, "How many more days until the next school holiday?" Five more weeks until President's week, then six more weeks until Spring Break, and after that there's nine more weeks until summer vacation! Wahoooooooo!!!! Time to partayyyy!!!! PSSHHHH. Who am I kidding??? I'm usually burnt out during the school year that I have no energy to celebrate. When that bell rings I usually drive home as quickly as I can, running a few red lights and stop signs. Then when I get home I dash to my bedroom, lock the door, collapse on my bed and sleep for 36 hours! Oh wait. I have a 2-year old. There's no such thing as sleep! Since my goal is to get a nap, I make my daughter extremely tired by taking her to different places to explore and experience new things. Last year we decided to have a weekend getaway in Sausalito for Spring Break. We needed a quick bite to eat before the drive home so I searched on Yelp, and we decided on this place due to the high ratings. It was small and cute. I don't mind communal tables but there was a lady who sat with us and she was clearly unhappy about sharing a table. I'm glad they moved to another table, I was annoyed by her grimace. All tables were quickly filled up, we had four new table mates right after the grimace lady and her crew moved to another table. That place was jamming on a weekday morning but the servers were full of smiles and the food came out quick! I had the shrimp omelette with spinach, Swiss cheese, and mushroom....but only four shrimp??? I fished for more but there was no more! I thought that was stingy but the omelette was delicious. The hash browns that came with it were great, crispy and yummy. I had a few bites of the Crab Eggs Benedict and it wasn't very exciting; however, I have never been a fan of eggs Benedict. It's like the coffee shop version of Cheers. I sat at the bar and watched patron after patron come in to be warmly greeted by the staff. Fred's is clearly part of the neighborhood's social scene and feels very local, not really a tourist vibe at all. The interior is nothing much to look at... think old greasy spoon or well worn 70s era diner. The menu is not designed for the feint of heart... and I mean that literally. Deep fried french toast? It's a novelty, but hopefully regular clientele aren't eating this on a daily basis. Don't let the non-descript name throw you off. Fred's is anything but. After a semi-vigorous bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, we worked up an appetite for a sinful late breakfast at Fred's. The restaurant is small and has counter seating and a few tables, including a few larger communal tables. The kitchen is right behind the counter so all the action is happening around you. The staff is very proficient and food is served quickly. We tried their french toast which is made of 2 pieces of brioche bread (I believe) and deep fried. I'm not a french toast person but I can attest it was really good. I personally liked the pancake the best. The pancakes are very thin, not as thin as crepes, but maybe half as thin as the normal buttermilk pancakes. They are airy, reminding me a little of crumpets. We also had their Frisco scramble, which was laden with avocado, cheese, and other stuff. The portion was really big. Even our son (aka human vacuum cleaner) couldn't finish it. Fred's is located about a mile from the wharf and away from most of the tourists (except for Yelpers!). It's a great place to go if you are cycling through. Highly recommend it. read more

Carol is not actually Carol or Carl, his name was Charlie, aka the elite runner who runs crazy speed, seriously crazy. Such was the group make up when we showed up after 14-16 miler at Marin Headlands. Nine of us, each getting our own check, they wrote down the names, everyone was properly identified except for Charlie. Elite ultra runners dined on fried French toast, millionaire bacon, hearty sandwiches, pancakes with side of hash browns, mimosa, the Swedish and omelette. I am neither ultra (first ultra marathon is currently scheduled for September) nor elite, I was simply trying to stay awake after a gruesome 2000 feet incline and some 14 mile of slugger run. Still jet lagged, breakfast at noon after the run felt non-surprisingly dinner-ish. God I miss American breakfast. Fred's the Swedish reminded me how much I missed it, despite the name. Coffee: they brought coffee outside as we waited, after we had requested it. They kept on filling it which was fantasmitic! They separated the bill for the 9 of us, pretty neat and one runner said, "this would never happen in San Francisco." True to that. Huge portions of deliciousness - important to know because unless you just burned 1900 calories and / or under 30, this place isn't right for you. But who cares! Great for large groups, surprisingly efficient, after being in Europe, one must appreciate how fast they bring out the food. I can't come here all the time: it is a very caloric place, but a nice restaurant outside of the touristy area that welcomed runners in Sausalito is hard to find, when you find one, you keep it like you keep a good man! read more

A little History: We had to go SFO early so we decided to take the back way to the East Bay. We Yelped a breakfast place in Sausalito and this place popped up. After reading the reviews, we decided to give it a try. We arrived a little early (6:30 and Fred's opens at 7AM) but the lady (Rebecca) setting up the place invited us to come in and have coffee while waiting for the cooks to arrive. This place has been around since 1966 and the cooks and this lady has been here for nearly 30 years. Rebecca said that when Fred passed away 17 years ago, they kept the name and the menu the same. I asked her if she's the manager to which she replied "no" because they're like family. People started arriving around 6:45 and were treated like family. There's a table where six people come in everyday and they've been coming for 25 years! Talk about locals! The Food: First, the portions are huge (I couldn't finish mine - Cheese and Sausage omelet), neither could my wife (Avocado omelet). Second, we tasted probably the best French toast (deep fried - I know, it's probably not the healthiest...lol)! The omelet were fluffy and flavorful. The country potato includes sweet potatoes! Third, it does feel like family. We chatted with a gentleman who sat at our table (room for six but it was only my wife and I). He was friendly and a local. Rebecca asked him, "you want the usual?" Found myself in Sausalito early yesterday, at breakfast time. Took to my mobile Yelp to search out something new to try, I saw Fred's reviews, pictures and menu posted. I was committed after reading about the Millionaire Bacon! Even thought is was busy, I was greeted immediately and seated at the last counter seat, which was entertaining to witness the hustle bustle and the skills of the grill cooks. While I hungrily eyed the Eggs Benedict platers beside me, I know I would eat only half (they really should offer half plates, hint hint.) But knowing bacon was on my mind, the perfect compliment would be Swedish Pancakes of course. The arrived, grilled to skinny perfection, and had jus the right flavor. The bacon was like nothing I've ever experienced, thick, sticky, sweet like meat candy. A real treat! Breakfast for one will run you approx $22 bucks, it was the bacon that padded the bill, but it was really worth it to try such a unique taste. The staff is very attentive, but not overly, they have outdoor seating, and the patio is dog friendly. We visit Northern California once per year and always make this gem a priority. From the meaty and salty bacon to the crispy but tender hash browns this place does not disappoint. I love brunch! If you're in Sausalito, Fred's coffee shop is the place to be for breakfast or lunch. It was packed on a Saturday afternoon, but my friend and I got a table inside right by the window. A server immediately came to our table to check if we wanted anything to drink. A fellow Yelper mentioned their fresh squeezed OJ and I decided to get one. It was delicious although the price for a small cup was steep. I wanted to get more than one item on the menu: their famous millionaire bacon, the Swedish, ricotta pancakes, hash browns, and French toast. I ended up ordering the Swedish which consists of two fried runny eggs, cheese, caramelized onions, and a side of toast. I'm glad I decided on adding the grass fed beef patty which had great flavor and the runny yolks added a nice texture to the whole dish. I inhaled it all and wiped my plate clean with the toast. Perfection! The service was attentive and friendly despite being busy. Their prices are a bit high, but I don't mind because they serve up great quality food. The eggs were extremely fluffy and it had the perfect amount of gooey Jack cheese in every bite. Even better than my omelette was the Potato Medley. Chilean Purple, Yukon Gold, Gemstone Red, Russet, and sweet yam all seasoned and fried to a crisp. The usual breakfast potato fashion, but way better. My meal came with two pieces of toast that I didn't even touch because I was so full from my omelette and potatoes. Portions here are insanely huge. Prices are a bit steep, but I wouldn't expect anything less in San Francisco and you do get what you pay for. The service at Fred's is just mediocre. Since it became busy while we were there, I feel like the servers weren't as attentive as they could've been. It took a few tries to get our servers attention for water refills. First off I want to say I've been coming to Fred's for years because of the great breakfast. Since when does MARIN COUNTY require vaccination proof to dine in?..... Wait they don't ...... My buddy and I wanted to go to our normal weekend morning breakfast just to find out we cant sit inside lol. This is a perfect breakfast spot with just the right amount of quirk. While They have their own parking lot in the back, it is small and when full or nearly full will require careful navigation to get in/out. If needs must there is side street parking close by. There is more outside seating then inside seating which is lovely on a nice day, not so much when it's wet and cold. The inside is on the smallish side of things, but manages to feel cozy instead of cramped. Typically larger groups aim for the inside seating but both inside and outside can accommodate parties of four to five folks. The outside seating is mostly your usual (and unremarkable) table/chair combos equipped with sun protection. The inside consists both of some super awesome hardwood tables, and a limited amount of counter seating. Normally i'd say only sit at the counter if you are feeling sociable, but Fred's has the policy of communal seating, so if you are inside you will be sharing a table with others. This is a fairly common event in Europe and Asia but isn't any too common in the US of A. Great way to meet people however. The food here is .............perfection. It's untypical american breakfast fare, with a few slightly European twists thrown in-like Swedish pancakes and greek style salads. The portions are huge and really really well made. There are no weak spots on the menu. i'm unreasonably confident that whatever you order you will enjoy. While this is totally not a coffee shop, they do produce exceptional cappuccino's, latte's etc. They have made a small specialty out of made to order hot chocolate, and no lie they have some mad barista skills. Pricing may be higher then you want-but you are in one of the most expensive areas in the world. While you can order a la carte and theoretically get things down to around ten to fifteen dollars a plate, a much more reasonable estimate would be in the twenty dollar plate range. Most times there will be a small (or maybe a not so small) wait to get in. Once inside service is fairly quick however. Totally worth every penny, and any small inconvenience. read more
