I would NOT go anywhere else for a Philly steak sandwich but to Fred's. I recently moved from the Richardson, TX area to close to downtown Dallas, so I have to (willingly) travel just to savor one of Fred's sandwiches. First of all, the service from the employees is ALWAYS exceptionally good (from the lady at the front desk and also from the cook) who often comes out to visit with customers. The French fries are not greasy; they are exceptionally crispy and very tasty. My favorite sandwich is the one with peppers (#6, I believe is correct). This place by a landslide was superior to my own expectations. I stopped in not expecting to order but when I came to my senses and ordered a cheesesteak pizza~steak with sautéed mushrooms and onions with this amazing seasoned sausage scattered throughout. I could have ordered peppers and i will next time. No cheap or fake garbage in this plus provolone cheese and melted to perfection. Scott even let me try the cheese wiz on the side which was also really good but stick with the provolone as it cooks over the steak and melts plus hold the whole sandwich together= its not messy and lots of meat. This place can stand up in my opinion to any Philly (Philadelphia) shop. Scott the GM and I believe owner perhaps was there. Super nice dude with that semi wise guy sense of humor that I like. I'd also like to mention their homemade sauces in the 70's style squeeze bottles. A+ indeed. This is a 5 star Philly Cheesesteak Joint like better than anything I had in over 10 years. Last thing their soda machine is super special as well. A local company that uses pure cane sugar. No coke or Pepsi bs here. So this place happens to be a local favorite! If you're craving a Philly cheesesteak, you should definitely try this place out. The meat was very tender and juicy. They have a great meat to bread ratio which is amazing for your taste buds! I was not that impressed with their fries but they have so many different types of sauces I didn't know what to do with myself! I tried every single one of their sauces with my sandwich. I think I over did it because everything started to blend together. But honestly I was in love with their mustard blend! My husband and I enjoyed the cheesesteaks so much, we ordered it twice within one week. The bread was perfect as it soaked up the meat juices but still held well. The sandwich was filled with steak. I loved the red sauce that comes with the sandwich. I'm not exactly sure what it was but it's like ketchup but not ketchup. The large sandwich is basically two good sized sandwiches once you split it in half. If you're like me, you would eat the whole thing in one sitting. Located in a sleepy shopping center in Allen, this is a great spot for cheesesteaks in the area. Yes, I have tried the other cheesesteak spot across the street, and in my opinion: Fred's is superior. Pretty good Philly Cheesesteak hoagie, it's hard to give it a 5-star because I'm from Philly and nothing ever tastes quite like home. Make sure you ask for provolone, otherwise you get American cheese by default, which is not the right way to make a cheesesteak, but with provolone and whiz is the right way, which they do have the option for that. Allen, you crack me up! McKinney doesn't have one cheese-steak place, but you have two right across the street from each other. There is something seriously unfair in Collin County. I have been frequenting the Fred's in Plano for many years. Every time I have had a hankering for a cheese-steak this is my go to place. Now, there is one closer to me, so I gave it a try. The chicken philly is AMAZING! It satisfies my craving every time. I have not tried Big Tony's so I don't have anything to compare it to, but this is the real deal. The juicy chicken paired with the melted cheese is perfection with the toasted bun. I LOVE their Fred's sauce, it is a perfect paring with the sandwich. This location opened near the former Fred's location when that one was "taken private" by (I assume) its frachisee. Seeing that there are now two cheesesteak places in a town that would seem to struggle to carry even one, I thought it was time for a "cheesesteak-off". Note that this review will bear similarities to my other review, as the places have nearly an identical menu. In the right corner, we have Fred's Downtown Philly in the new location. I ordered a #6 cheesteak with onions, cheese and banana peppers. It was served on a 10" roll, and seemed a little light on the meat, The flavor and texture of the meat was good, and the banana peppers were in good proportion, but I was hoping for more cheese. I also ordered a side here, sweet potato fries. They were quite good, dark in color yet not overcooked (not sure what happened there), and seemed to have a light sprinkling of sugar. Bottom line, Fred's came in second in my "cheesesteak-off", based mainly on the fact that the amount of meat was less than the competition. I was surprised when the location that used to be Fred's in Allen, changed to Big Tony's. It was a sandwich. Nothing spectacular. The meat was tasteless. I went to Fred's at lunch time. It wasn't too busy. I got a table that was filthy. Only two people were working, the young guy taking orders and the guy cooking. Looks like nobody had time to wipe down tables. I got the #5, I asked for cheese but didn't get any. The menu was a bit confusing because it repeats sandwiches but adds more meat, etc. The sandwich, fries and drink were $8.40. Their cheesesteak is the bomb! I love how they use flaked pieces rather than large flat steaks like everywhere else. It really helps combine the cheese and meat. Literally melts in your mouth. I tried the buffalo wings as well. I was disappointed to find out that it was not a wet sauce, and it was not spicy. I tried to save it with their own special sauce, and it really made the wings flavorful. Their sauces are very savory and finger-licking good! I have mixed feelings about writing this review. If I was judging it off my sandwich alone, this would be 5 stars but they have some front of the house issues that knock it down to a 3. The front counter person is taking orders, providing lids/utensils/boxes and running food. I'd put those things out with the sauces and have the kitchen actually stick to calling numbers and just let that girl take orders. She seemed a little overwhelmed and messed up a few orders (for other customers) while we were there. Perhaps she is new, but this just leads to very long lines to order and multiple trips back up to interrupt her to get what you need. We had a large philly (#2), which comes with onions and cheese. Unfortunately, they charge you .30 if you chose to avoid the processed cheese product (aka get provolone over 'Cheez Whiz'). It's only 30 cents, but it wasn't disclosed to me up front and it just seems petty. Anyway, that 30 cent cheese was melted to perfection and really set off the sandwich so I'd definitely go for the upcharge again. The sandwich overall was great. We also got spicy mozzarella sticks. They were fine. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing overly awesome. Maybe if they were served with some kind of marinara or ranch? They have bottled drinks, but the only diet I saw was Diet Mountain Dew so we opted for the fountain drinks. It however was not working properly and only the Dr Pepper and Diet Dr Pepper were dispensing. I hate Dr Pepper (I know, I know) so I had tea. I'm sure that's not always the case there, but it was just another annoying thing during our trip. The two food items and two drinks came to $17, which I think is fair. So we have a full-fledged cheesesteak war in Allen! Background: Fred's is a North Texas cheesesteak chain that had a location next to Wienerschnitzel in Allen. That location was run by Tony. Tony decided he didn't want to be a Fred's franchisee anymore and that location became Big Tony's Cheeseteaks. Fred decides he still wants to be in Allen and open up a Fred's a few months ago...across the street from Big Tony's! It's like the minor league version of Pat's vs. Geno's! I've now had both, and, frankly, I don't think there is much, if any difference in the food. Just like Big Tony's, I feel like the amount of food for what you pay is lacking. I paid $12 for their extra cheesesteak sandwich + fries + drink. The cheesesteaks at both places don't fill me up, and you don't get many fries. Feels like you pay a lot and still leave hungry. That said, with the food being a tie, I still have to give the edge to Fred's. It's bigger, seems cleaner, and has 2 nice huge HDTV's playing movies (the night I was there). In the future, I would err on the side of going to Fred's, who I've always liked except the Plano location. I will say, I HATE that all Fred's close at 8pm everyday it's open. WHY?? At least Tony, whether he was running Fred's or his own shop, is open until 9pm. If I want a cheesesteak and it's past 8pm, I'm naturally going to Big Tony's. So all in all, the edge to Fred's but both Fred's and Tony's needs to give you more bang for the buck. read more

Went here on Saturday based off a suggestion from a friend as well as the Yelp reviews. It was busy when we arrived which is usually a good sign. Soon found out it was probably busy because of the way the girl taking orders was having a difficult time. She was also delivering orders to people sitting down waiting on their food. I found that a bit odd because sometimes they'd yell out numbers for you to come pick up your order, and sometimes the girl would come deliver it to you. Drink machines were not working properly. They have no utensils or lids out for you to grab. You have to go up and ask for them which also adds to the slow service. Found it a bit odd that they had Harry Potter playing on the TV with the sound on, like we were going to stay for the whole thing or something. The food did make up for the poor to average service. The cheesesteak had good flavor and the bread was very soft. Do know they up charge you for provolone for some reason, and they don't let you know this. Whenever I need to get a Philly Cheesesteak fix, I drive from Frisco to the Fred's location in Allen. Their cheesesteaks are better than anything that I've found in Frisco, and 10 times better than the "East Coast Philly" shop over the city line in Plano. The "crab fries," which are shoestring French fries with Old Bay seasoning sprinkled on them, are worth the extra 10 cents. My only wish is that they'd use more cheese and more meat.
