Truly authentic Philly Cheesesteak's down to the hoagie bun. Can't be beat.

Living in Pennsylvania for 6 years, and growing up 2 hours from Philly, I've had my fair share of cheesesteaks. I've been looking everywhere for a suitable replacement, and thus far, this has been the only place close. I've tried 2 locations - their Richardson location, and their Plano location. Both spots are your typical "hole-in-the-wall" gems. You'll drive right past it unless you're looking specifically for it. This place is worth the hunt. The meat tastes fresh, it needs to be salted more, but quite good. The cheese was fresh as well. The hoagie roll truly reminded me of PA. Both tiny restaurants were packed. Thank God my girlfriend and I just beat the lunch rush. We sat down with our food, and as soon as we did, about 15 or so people came in and waited on line. Seriously, this place is incredible. It's a little expensive compared to how much food you get, but definitely worth it. If it were a little cheaper and didn't have strange hours (closes by 7 and closed on Sunday), it'd be 5 stars. 4 stars considering all factors. read more

Awesome cheese steaks and Fred is really cool to talk to! If you try to take on the liberty bell great ready, it was well worth the try.

I've been going to Fred's for years now and I love that he's franchised out and still able to keep the same quality everywhere. You flat out won't find a better cheesesteak in the Dallas area. Fred is from Philly and he takes serious pride in making the best cheesesteaks around. My favorites are the #4 (double meat), #8 (Mushroom), the #18 (Po' Fred) as well as some of the newer ones on the menu. Who would have thought shrimp would taste good in a cheesesteak? Well it does. You're just not going to go wrong here but understand that it will destroy your diet. After having my first sandwich many years ago, I was literally craving another one for dinner it was just so good. I've had cheesesteaks at all the Philly originals like Pat's and Geno's and Fred's are waaaay better. Highly recommended!!! read more

I don't get the hype. I love me a greazzzzy sandwich, with meat and cheese galore. But the cheesesteak lacked flavor. I got a little grossed out eating this thing and ended up just throwing it away. Much better junk food around to eat than to waste precious calories on this thing. If you're starving and this is the only place to eat, then go for it. If you have options and want a delicious cheesesteak, find yourself another dive. read more

Feds is a pretty good representation of a Philly cheesesteak they use armoroso bread and have sever types of cheese wiz along w utz potato chips. My only complaint is that a Tru Philly sandwich has twice the meat cheese and onions and is 12 inches not 10 read more

My co-workers took me here and it was a nice and greezy Philly which to me is a great sign of a true Philly cheese steak. The flavors just melted in my mouth. I am defiantly going back here and looking forward to taking my Philly friend to get his take on it as well. read more

I've never been to Philly for the real thing, but Fred's makes a good Cheesesteak sandwich, and is well worth a visit. I know of at least two locations, one in Plano on 15th, and the other located in Allen on Bethany just east of Central. Lately, I have gone to the newest location up on Bethany, in Allen. The parking is better, and to be honest, the place is much cleaner. The 15th street location is in severe need of an update, and more importantly, a severe cleaning. On at least two visits to the 15th St location, the place reeked of trash which is located right in front next to the order area. Yuk! Also, parking at the 15th St location can be bad, especially at lunch. Overall, though, Fred's is a good place to lunch. Just don't expect to be impressed by the facilities. If you have not been to Fred's I suggest you try the Allen location first. If the 15th St location was rearranged, and the trash can placed in a different location to eliminate the smell, Fred's could easily be a four-star treat. read more

I heard about this restaurant from a couple of friends who told me this place was ridiculously good. I often go to Texadelphia whenever I get the chance since Philly Cheese Steak is like the greatest culinary invention of all time. Anyways, I actually tried to go here once before, apparently on weekdays they close after 8:00. I got there at about 8:05 and they had already cleaned up and the store was closed. I was still determined to try some of that famous Cheese Steak everyone here talks about. I finally made it for dinner not too long ago. The cashier was very friendly and enticed me into ordering some fries and onion strings for 3 people. I am SO GLAD he talked me into it because the fries and onion strings were delicious. But on to the real meat of this review. All I have to say is, I feel as if I have wasted a ton of money driving to Texadelphia all the time, apparently this place has been around for a while, which means I probably could have eaten here while attending Plano West. CRAP. The Philly Cheese steak was very very well made. It was incredibly juicy and delicious. On top of that, the thing didn't fall apart when I took a bite out of it, like Texadelphia's. MAJOR PLUS. I hate when that crap falls out and its so hot it burns your hand. If you hate that too then fret not, that crap is not tolerated at Fred's Downtown Philly... or maybe it is but it won't happen, because their Philly Cheese Steak is the bomb. This restaurant is pretty hard to find, if someone had not mentioned it was in the same shopping center as Mr. Sushi on Yelp I prob would have driven right past it. Also Fred's picture on the wall, and sometimes he comes out to greet customers, its kind of like meeting a celebrity but not. lol. Celebrity or not, he makes one sick Philly Cheese Steak. read more

So so good. Who knew this little gem would be around the corner from the house I grew up in? The only other cool restaurants around were Sonic (sarcasm)! When I'm trying to be somewhat good, I get the cheesesteak salad for fewer carbs...no dressing necessary. read more

Hands down the best cheesesteak outside of Philly you will ever have! We didn't try the sauces because we devoured our sandwiches too fast they were so good. Fast friendly service too and it was 30 minutes before closing. read more

My husband and I love Fred's!! We eat phillys from there at least once a month. Their bread is amazing, I remember the manager telling me one time they fly it in from Philly. The fries are super crispy. I generally get the broad street and my husband usually gets the Rocky but I've never been disappointed when I've branched out. If you're calling the Carrolton location, make sure you use the number on their website and not google, google needs to update it. The Carrollton location also recently updated their restaurant it's a much bigger room but with all the same Philly charm. read more

This is our favorite cheesesteak place! Honestly, I've had plenty of cheesesteaks in Philly...and PA for that matter and I haven't found any that I like better. On a recent trip to Philly, I decided to skip cheesesteaks altogether, because they weren't Fred's. I like mine with cherry peppers. My husband is more of a naturalist. Have eaten at this location several times, and once at their Carrollton location. Food is pretty good, atmosphere is a dive. If you're looking for fine dining this is not your joint. Prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. If you're really hungry go for the 10", the small just won't be enough. Plano location is pretty dumpy and in need of a renovation, but that is part of the ambiance I guess. You just can't go in with your expectations of a spic and span place too high. You just go for the food. Cheesesteaks are good and always come out hot, but each one is made to order so it's not fast food, you will wait a bit for it to come out. It's worth the wait, but I hear the lunch hours can be a little chaotic. I only go on off hours. Glaring negative is the skimpiness in the use of cheese. If you're going to call it a CHEESEsteak for heaven's sake man put some cheese on it. It's barely visible. It's worth the trip to try it out though, good stuff. read more

I've been going here for 7-8 years and it never gets old. Great bread, great meat, friendly service. Fred himself is a really nice guy. Scott at the Allen location is also very nice and funny. Love going here and will continue to do so. These cheesesteaks are probably better than the real thing. I love Fred's. read more

This is the second time in a year that I've been to Fred's. I should go here more!! The first time I got a mushroom philly...trying to keep the wife from eating my food b/c she doesn't like mushrooms. That didn't stop her, she loved it anyway. This time I went she was still working, so I could enjoy the cheesesteak in all it's glory. And what glory it was...hot, fresh, you can taste the cheese, and the fries were cooked to a crisp perfection. Love it...definitely will eat there more than once a year! read more

my hubby being a new yorker has gotten me hooked on street food, chicken and rice, nathans hotdogs, and now philly cheesesteaks.. But being in texas i doubt we could find a authentic cheesesteak place...but i was wrong.. I'm not a huge eater of cheesesteaks, but I like this place. I've been told that the owner is from Philly, and I've been told by a Philly native that the cheesesteaks here are authentic. All i know is that they're good. I'd give the place 5 stars but I haven't been to any other cheesesteak places in the area. They also have a location in Richardson. Beware Cowboys fans. This is a great little spot to grab an authentic style philly cheese steak...I have two disclaimers 1. I'm a provolone cheese type of girl when it comes to philly cheese steaks they use like a melted cheese sauce which was good but not my cup of tea. 2. The restaurant itself is not remarkable. It's almost like a small room nestled in a strip mall. The floor is cracked and peeling wood parquet patterned linoleum. The walls are adorned with photos of Philly. A somewhat awkward quote proclaiming, "The best 10" you've ever had in your mouth" hangs proudly on the wall. But the food is superb. The cheesesteak was made fresh to order and flavorful. The fries were perfectly seasoned with a touch of pepper and had a great texture. Instead of the tiresome Coca-Cola, they serve Pepsi which goes great with the food. read more

You won't be impressed by the dive ambiance. You won't be impressed by the Philadelphia Eagle love shrine. You won't be impressed by the broken sign which doesn't light up anymore. You won't be impressed by the tiny amount of product in their bags of chips.. You will be impressed by the order taker who knows his product very well. You will be impressed by the wide variety of choices in sandwiches and add-ons. You will be extremely impressed when your food is up and it is grill hot and heavenly. Most of all, you will be impressed by the juicy, rich explosion of authentic flavor when you take your first bite and every bite after that. These sandwiches are hot and generous. My wife gets the cheesesteak and I get the mushroom steak. Both are great. Get the ten inch so you can eat it again next meal. read more

I used to think Texadelphia was a real cheesesteak until I went here! I will never make that mistake again. This place is AWSEOME. The meat is great. I love the rolls. The staff are always fun when you go in to order at the window. I do have to say the place is very "hole in the wall" so don't expect anything else, but I promise it is worth it! read more

Absolutely the best cheesesteak around. I used to go to Fred's before he got kicked out of his Dallas location years and years ago and it's still just as good ever. This location and atmosphere is not stellar, but the delicious food makes up for it. Also, it looks a lot better than it used to believe it or not! As the line going out the door around lunch time indicates, the food is excellent and you should expect a long, well-worth-it wait. The cheesesteak is Philly quality. I can't believe we have something so good close to home. During our last visit we had cheesesteak and split and order of fried pickles. The cheesesteak was amazing and the fried pickles had some of the best seasoning I have ever tried. Yum! I have never had to wait and the staff is always extremely fast and friendly. I would give this place 5 stars, but I'm sort of a neat freak when it comes to dining establishments and the walls, especially the photo frames, we're pretty grimy. I love the decor and hole in the wall atmosphere, but the "don't touch anything" feeling has got to go. I will be back for their scrumptious cheesesteaks! read more

I used come by here maybe 15 years ago and I decided to try it again today. It was a blast from the past and I'm glad for the good food. I had what did years ago, the mushroom 6 inches and I'd wish I had gotten the 10. Maybe next time. Fries are good. Places has a new paint job, but still the same recipes. Just as packed as before. Food is fabulous! My mother and I both order the mushroom cheesesteak and share fries and their fried pickles. The venue however...there's a certain off putting smell that makes getting take out a better option when possible. Decided to check this place out for lunch based on recommendations off Yelp. I liked the way the place looked, good hole in the wall type place decked out in all types of Philly gear and pictures. The staff was incredibly friendly from the lady who took the order to the guys making the food, plenty of welcomes and have a nice days on the way out. The food didn't live up for me though. First I am not from Philly so I will not say anythign about authentic cheese steak or not. The bread they use is really good stuff but I was dissapointed in the amount of meat you get for a 7.50 sandwich. Based on looking at others sandwiches that were picked up they all looked the same for amount of meat. The sandwich tasted good just not what I would call a 7.50 sandwich. The upcharges were also very nickle and dime, want a different cheese (not attidional) .50, want lettuce .50 for lettuce? A head of lettuce is 1.00 at the grocery. The real killer for me was the fries though, they were overcooked and covered in more salt than I have ever seen in my life. Pick up two of them and your fingers are covered in salt. If I am going to spend 12.00 on a sandwich, fries and a drink there are better options for the money in the area. read more
