The flavor is there and the service is friendly. It's a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, but that suits the menu just fine. The disappointments I had involved really, really dry bread and too little meat. When I get a philly standwich, I expect a good amount of meat. When in Philly, I expect it to be practically overflowing, but here there was not nearly enough meat. I ended up tearing off bits of bread to make the ratio appropriate. Still, the price is low enough that ordering double-meat is still a viable option without becoming too expensive. Their sauces are quite good. read more

Stopped into Fred's on a Friday afternoon with my sister and it was an okay experience. Parking is a little tricky as Freds is in an older shopping center with a small parking lot. The inside of the restaurant is kind of dumpy. Could use a redo and a good cleaning. I would recommend calling in your order and taking it home. I ordered a mushroom cheese steak with fries and my sister ordered a hamburger with fries. Our food came out pretty quickly and smelled delicious. Texadelphia is GONE, so as far as I know, this is the only place in Plano, let alone Collin County, to get an "authentic" Philly cheesesteak. If you HATE Philly sports teams, have someone else go in to pick up your food - Fred has the walls of this 35+ year-old strip center address bedecked in ALL the gear! Yes, those ARE old Dairy Queen MDF table/bench units for seating, and you'd be amazed how many teenage boys and girls can squeeze into one! It can take some time to get your food, especially if you go during the lunch rush of 12 - 1:30, because this is NOT McDonald's and frequently it's just Fred in the kitchen doing all the cooking. Again, plan accordingly and call in your order... The fries are GREAT, the onion strings are FABULOUS, and the cheesesteaks are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, plus there are many variations to suit specific Texans' diverse palates. The drinks ARE served in styrofoam cups and are a little pricey which is why I've suggested getting your food to go and getting a drink at the 7-11 down the strip. Fred's is great! My first time in the Fred the owner, told me his story. He was a very friendly guy. He gave me some advice on which sandwich to order. I took one to go for a friend to try. He scarfed it down and got real excited by rounding everyone else up and even making phone calls to other people before we all drove back down to Fred's to order up more sandwiches. The place is full of Philadelphia Eagles stuff which I appreciated even though I am a Cowboys fan. It's true...the lady that took my order was not friendly at all. After she took my order, she went to 1 of the tables and put her head down...not sure if she was tired or was sleeping. There was no one there except for me and 1 other customer but no one thought to wipe down the tables which had crumbs on it. I have driven by this establishment since it was established in 1995.I never noticed it. I happened to read some reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor and couldn't see how I missed it. The reviews were excellent. I checked their Plano Health Department scores and they have "A's". How was I missing this place? It is HARD to find. It has only 16 to 20 feet of frontage. It is tucked into one corner of a bunch of inline buildings and is very hard to see if you are coming from the west on 15th street. It is located on the northwest side of the intersection of Custer & 15th Street. I tell you all of this so you can FIND IT EASILY because it's worth finding. Yesterday I ate my very first Philly Cheesesteak. Man, what I've been missing. It was wonderful. I had the #6, the Pepper Phillycheesesteak. It was greasy and the bun was fresh and warm. My bill came to $5.04 with a 10% discount for being old. I'm 70. The only thing I did wrong was that I failed to get the larger size. Believe me, I would have eaten it all. They cook to order so this is NOT fast food so expect a wait. You might consider calling in your order. The menu is massive and includes hamburgers. I hope to eat there again today. I spoke to Fred since he took my order and brought it out to me. He was very proud of his establishment. He told me they use sirloin to make the chopped meat. I believe him. They are remodeling a bit and will have new coke machines within the next 2 weeks. Plus some snacks that are regional like chips and candies that you can't find around here that makes the experience feel more "real". Born just outside of Philadelphia, I grew up on great hoagies and Philly Cheesesteaks. Been to Pat's and Geno's many times and Fred's is just as good as these two from Philly. They know me by name I've been there so often. I can call and order for pick up and I've always received great service and the order the way I requested. Lunch time is hectic as there are many who go there for this meal. Suggest trying the one in Richardson if you're in that area and there is more seating at that location. Can not give high enough praise for a great meal from Fred's. read more

Woosah: to tell someone to calm down and relax. Well I did have to count to 10, say the serenity prayer in my head. WHY? Because the cashier at Fred's is STUPID! Well stupid in the fact that she demanded I leave after ordering and paying for my sandwich, and I was waiting for it while Mikayla as usual was in her down position while waiting. I offered the woman a card with the ADA law on it and she refused and once again demanded I leave and that if I didn't leave I needed to giver her paperwork. So I then informed her that there was no paperwork unless she wanted to see her shot records which I would be happy to get from the car. I continued to stand our ground all the while explaining as best I could now being in a complete panic attack that we are allowed anywhere except a sterile field. To which her response was if your not going to leave, then I will make sure you can't never come back.....well I will be back on principal alone. I don't like being put in that situation ever but I also am and advocate for fair and equal access for all with disabilities. My knee jerk reaction is file a complaint with the DOJ, which would result in a big fine. However with a desire to educate I instead am going to take a better approach, I think. I grabbed a business card and it has the Owner Michael Stanford's email address. I will email him and let him know of the issue and send the ADA FAQ for information. Give it 48 hours and return for a yummy Philly and see if the cashier's had an attitude adjustment at all. read more

This was the only one that actually said Philly cheesesteak so I took a chance. My food was ready within 15 minutes. This is one of the best Philly sandwiches I've had in a ver long time.
