Went to dinner here with a party of six and our dinner was fantastic! Justin was our server and the service was as good or better than any of the finer food establishments in Carmel. We got there are 5:30 on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised to find that happy hour lasted until 6pm, so the wine was 1/2 price. The Harvey and Harriett red blend was phenomenal. The pig and fig was an amazing appetizer and I could have eaten 5 of those by myself!The seafood special, cordon bleu and burger were definitely all dishes we will crave and return for. My partner and I dined at Josephine Carmel to celebrate our three-year anniversary. It was our first time visiting the restaurant, and we had a great experience overall. Our server, Justin, was attentive and helpful throughout the evening. My partner asked for wine pairing recommendations, and Justin suggested a Pinot Noir that paired well with the meal. I ordered the Lemon Drop Cocktail, which was refreshing and enjoyable. The food was excellent. I ordered the Steak Frites, and my partner ordered the Duck A L'Orange. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the duck breast was tender and flavorful. We also shared the lavender and wild berry cheesecake for dessert. It was a unique offering--the flavors were interesting, although it wasn't my personal favorite. My partner, however, enjoyed it quite a bit. The ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful and elegant. My only complaint was the temperature inside the dining room. We dined indoors on a Saturday evening in mid-July when it was around 90 degrees outside, and the restaurant felt unusually warm and stuffy. I suspect there may have been an issue with the HVAC system, as there seemed to be very little air circulation. My partner was sweating throughout dinner. I'm usually someone who gets cold easily at restaurants and often brings a cardigan, so the fact that I found the temperature uncomfortable was surprising. Food - 1. Onion soup - had no natural sweetness and had too much tang and rosemary/thyme. The herb was overpowering. 2. Steak tartare - my husband enjoyed it. Just not my thing unless steak is tender. This was a little bit tough for me still. 3. Homemade ketchup was too sweet and runny. Didn't have much of a tomato flavor. 4. Duck a l'orange - is the signature dish but it was overcooked. It actually tastes gamier and didn't have a great texture. Proper duck breast is to be medium rare to medium, but I know we're in central Indiana. 5. Steak frites - steak was cooked well but had a burnt crust to it. Made it bitter. It really lacked basic salt and pepper. The sauce was also lacking in flavor. But the frites and aioli were good. 6. Wine- decent selection. The Bordeaux wasn't good but my husband's rose was decent. Service - our server was attentive as he could be was unfortunately spread too thin and was covering both sides of the dining room. Service at times took longer than anticipated. Manager was nice and did check on us. Just not the memorable meal we were hoping for on our anniversary and isn't the type of French cuisine we've had in the past from our travels. read more

Josephine Carmel was a pleasant experience to be devoured indeed! I went with friends to try their Devour Indy Winter 2026 menu. It did not disappoint! The prix fixe choices included an appetizer, soup or salad, entree and dessert of your choice all for $50. I enjoyed the PIG & FIG app-a crisp pork belly with Granny Smith apple, whipped Brie, figs, rosemary honey. The FRENCH ONION SOUP made with chicken & beef stock, caramelized onions, wild herbs, Gruyere, Comté, parmesan, and a touch of sherry. I had the BEEF BOURGIGNON  braised beef, carrots, celery, pearl onion, mushrooms, potatoes, red wine beef stock as my entree. We were also served complimentary sparking wine. I enjoyed their espresso martini, the chic and sophisticated ambiance as well as the friendly and attentive wait staff. The wine and food was delicious! The coq au vin was very nostalgic and familiar tasting. Classic flavors and a hearty winter meal. The chicken was cooked perfectly and super juicy. The layout of the restaurant is super weird and the menu is quite limited. The bartender was very nice and made sure to ask questions to ensure we got what we wanted. But overall, it was good, but not great or very memorable. They did give little chocolate raspberry cups with the check though, which was a pleasant surprise! read more

Not really French food and when they try to copy a few traditional French menu items they haven't gotten it right

Such a hidden gem in downtown Carmel. I've lived here for almost two years and passed Josephine countless times on Main Street, but finally decided to give it a try..and I'm so glad I did. French cuisine isn't usually my go-to, but this place completely changed my mind. We were welcomed by Aaron, the GM, who was incredibly friendly, genuine, and accommodating. Our server, Justin, was just as impressive--super knowledgeable about the menu, wine, and appetizers, and made the whole experience even better. If you're in the mood for something a little different, a bit elevated, and genuinely delicious, this is your spot. I had the chicken cordon bleu and my boyfriend ordered the duck, both were outstanding. But if there's one thing you have to try, it's the bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese... seriously unforgettable. Had a lovely dinner with girlfriends during devour week. We were given a nice table to sit at and the staff was so kind and patient with us when waiting an extended period of time for our last party. We went on a Wednesday night and learned that it was wine night, so we split a very nice bottle that was made even more affordable. All 3 of us decided to take advance of the 3 course devour menu option. Everything was delicious! An even nicer touch was that we were present an amuse bouche and another dessert tasting before our dessert course. My friends and I throughly enjoyed our time at Josephine. We went to celebrate my 40th birthday and our waiter Peter was wonderful. We were given an amuse bouche for both appetizer and dessert, plus I received a free birthday dessert. We started our meal with the escargot, which were perfect. Then I had the salmon almondine, and my husband chose the duck a' l'orange. Both were absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend that you order anything that involves the potatoes aligotes. SO good. Owner Dan stopped by and was so nice and welcoming. Josephine's has a lot of promise. It has a warm ambiance and some French hits on the menu, but the food was okay for the price. We ordered: French onion soup: the broth was almost too thick for my liking and it was a bit too salty. Pig & Fig: this was probably my favorite meal of the night. I liked the crispiness of the pork belly and the fig and honey gave it a nice sweetness. Steaks frites: the fries were crisp, but the taste of the steak was okay and a little overcooked for a filet mignon. Duck A L'Orange: the skin wasn't crispy and the duck was overcooked. I really liked the orange and brandy sauce though. The staff was very friendly and helpful! An absolutely fantastic experience! We sat at the bar and were warmly greeted by Lilly. We ordered a bottle of wine, the bone marrow and escargot. The Bone Marrow app was great And we finished them off with a calvados luge. The escargot was amazing and super tender. We moved on to share the pork entree and sides of frites and cassoulet beans. We got two glasses of a delicious red Burgundy to go with the entree. Perfect pairing. For dessert we split a pot de crème and it was denser that ones I've had in the past but the flavor wa incredible. The chefs popped into the dining room and checked on us. Super nice guy and he told us that the pot se crème was made in the traditional manner. Brad the GM stopped by to make sure everything was perfect. Service and food are good but overpriced. Appetizer (scallops on shells, $15) was very small, just a couple of bites. The Duck Confit Salad was really tasty, probably best meal of the dinner. The souse in our main course chicken Coq-Au-Vin was really good, while the chicken itself tasted like usual fried chicken. We were surprised that no basket of bread was provided. Escargot had a definite herb flavor which was different than I have had before. Our entrees were both full of flavor and would definitely order again. This time, we chose the new-on-the-scene Josephine in Carmel, and it was a decision we'll be talking about for a long time. Her visit was shortly after Mother's Day, so when our extremely knowledgeable and wonderfully personable server Carlos asked if we were celebrating anything, I told him it was a delayed Mother's Day dinner. From that moment, he made it his mission to ensure our evening was not just enjoyable but truly exceptional. Along with an amazing amuse-bouche, he surprised us with a complimentary glass of bubbly so we could toast the night -- a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the rest of the evening. The menu is exceptional and honestly made choosing just one entrée a real challenge. We started with the Steak Tartare -- a dish that's notoriously hard to get right -- but here, it was executed flawlessly. For her main, my mom had the Steak Frites, and we both agreed the filet was better than what you'd find in even the top steakhouses. The accompanying sauce was nothing short of spectacular, and the frites themselves were perfectly crisp, paired with a silky, flavorful aioli. Amazing dish delivered at an amazing price! I opted for the ricotta-stuffed pasta, and as someone fortunate enough to have dined in Italy, I can say these soft pillows of cheesy goodness in their rich, flavorful sauce rivaled anything I've had in that country. Service was a highlight. Peter and the team were on it! Kept water on the table, a nice pace to our courses, all were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. At one point there was a teenager who sort of dropped off a plate and awkwardly ran away - nbd. Food - we really wanted to love everything. It was good but didn't get quite get to great. We had: escargot (nice texture, less garlic than a lot of places), steak tartare (very good though there wasn't enough crostini), lobster bisque (typical, as expected), a blue cheese and beet salad, steak frites (didn't love the peppercorn sauce but the meat was cooked to perfection), bouillabaisse (far more rich than expected, did not notice any crab in it, shrimp and mussels were tasty, good texture), chicken cordon blu, pot de creme, and creme brûlée. Really would have liked bread, did not see it on menu, none was offered. Drinks: old fashioned (no cherry), French 75 (one of the best I've ever had), wine list (short but covered a nice range - we had a red blend Harvey & Harriet). Maybe this was a one-off, but would NOT recommend sitting in the bar. We had a loud, drunk lady at the bar, and that pretty much ruined the dining experience. If you are lucky enough to avoid such an obnoxious person, you may enjoy the bar area. It's a crap shoot. Also, should mention this was a Saturday night at 7 pm. And at that hour, finding parking is also a nightmare, even with a parking garage right next door. We were there for a total of 2 hrs and 15 min. After being seated and not being attended to for 15 min., we had to ask the hostess to send a server over. He finally arrived and brought water, but neglected to take our drink order. Then several more minutes elapsed before he returned. There was a lot of time between appearances, and on top of that, he got one of the orders wrong. We had onion soup and pig & fig for appetizers, and wild boar and bouillabaisse as entrees. All were ok, but the bouillabaisse was a tad too salty, and none of the portions were what might be considered ample. Also, the bouillabaisse is a creamy style, not the typical soupy style. That's not bad, it's just different. Finally, as a scotch drinker, I was disappointed in their selection, which was minimal at best. Also, charging $26 for a 9 ounce glass of wine was a little surprising. We will probably go back again, but will NOT sit in the bar area. I had seen this restaurant show up several times on TikTok so I was super excited to finally be able to try it. Upon walking in to Josephine, the hosts were super friendly even sitting us a few minutes before the reminder of our party arrived. We were served water and menus while we waited. We ordered several appetizers and were offered welcome bites of some really good spicy tomato like juice shot and these little bites of cucumbers. Very good! Next our appetizers arrived. We got the baguette which was burnt and hard, and bacon wrapped dates. The dates were not awful but not the greatest. The onion soup was by far the best thing we ordered. Tasted great. Next for entrees we got the chicken (I can't recall the name ) and the ricotta stuffed pasta. . The pasta was decent. The chicken dish was very dry and really had no meat on it. Sadly, I don't think I would go again. The other family we dined with had steak frites, was not cooked to perfection of medium. No one raved about their meals like we usually do. We went to Josephine's in Carmel last night during what should have been peak dinner rush. Oddly enough, we were the only guests in the restaurant -- and unfortunately, it quickly became clear why. Dinner lasted over two hours from start to finish, with service that was polite but painfully slow. We started with the Pig & Fig and Palm Frites. The Pig & Fig was described as apple with melted brie, but what arrived was a slice of apple with a bland béchamel sauce and a few thin slices of pork tenderloin -- not a fig in sight. The Palm Frites were just frozen French fries. At this price point, fresh-cut fries (duck fat would've been amazing!) should be the bare minimum for a French restaurant with steak frites as the highlighted menu item. For entrées, we ordered the smash burger which were over cooked hockey pucks, duck confit- even though I mentioned to the waitress that I didn't like food that was sweet... It was absolutely sweet, which was disappointing and served with out of season button mushrooms and peppercorn steak -- though the "peppercorn" part was nowhere to be found. Everything was forgettable and under-whelming. The owner made special mention of the chef being meticulous about the food. He prepared and served, which I thought was odd, considering the quality of the food we were served. The owner stopped by since it was our first visit -- a nice gesture, though slightly awkward given we were the only table in the place. He mentioned wanting the restaurant to become a late-night hangout spot. Honestly, I can't imagine who would hang out here based on this experience. In the end, I would've rather stayed home with a bag of Cheetos and saved $200. What a disappointment. We had a wonderful experience at Josephine's. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the bar was lively but not overly loud. Our server, Frankie, was attentive and made excellent recommendations. Amuse Bouche is served to start your meal. This was a piece of heaven and delicious. We enjoyed the Escargot, which was a perfect appetizer. The Le Beau Citr was my absolute favorite. There are so many flavor components in this salad. The Pickled Strawberries were an unusual but delicious treat. The Candied Almonds had a perfect crunch and were not overly sweet. I would go back just for this salad. Our main dish was Coq au vin and Crème brûlée for dessert. The service was impeccable, and the timing of the courses was perfect. We look forward to dining here again and trying the Onion Soup, per Chef Jes's recommendation. Jes was introduced to us by the GM, who was also extremely nice. Carlos, the bar manager, was informative and a delight to talk to. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant. The restaurant is a little hard to find, and the address is 110 Main. This restaurant has only been open for just over one week. I feel that is the reason for the slow service in getting our food. How ever the food was well prepared and quite good. My wife and I enjoyed the Steak Frites diner. The filet was cooked to perfection, however the Frites were just ok, more like a fry. The restaurant has been completely redone and the ambiance was terrific. We had a price fix dinner which included dessert, which was a chocolate covered strawberry.
