I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place...especially for it's decor and the whole establishment. Like most of others wrote about this place, the atmosphere is great, it's both good for gathering with friends and dating. There were 3 of us coming here for dinner, we had Mussels, Soup of the Day, Grilled Shrimp, Watermelon Salad, Roast Trout and side dish Broccoli. All the dish was delicious and our server was also very good. I suppose we were very lucky, cuz the food came very quickly, we didn't really have to wait much. So this place is a little tricky to locate but if you find it you will be rewarded! I arrived a little after 8 and was set out on Chrystie Street by my cab driver with a shrug but quickly made sense of the area and was down the alley and inside within about 5 minutes. The fact that this place has no signage was no big deal as it is literally the only thing off the alley. The host and hostess were extremely friendly and gracious as I explained that I just wanted to squeeze into the bar for dinner and they kindly directed me to the bar in the back. This place is super cozy. Lots of smaller rooms with taxidermy and great low lighting. It feels a bit like an old hunting lodge and seems the perfect place for a gathering of friends or an intimate dinner for two. Noise was not really an issue but bear in mind that you can't have lots of people in any small space and have quiet. The bar staff was very attentive even though they were VERY busy! This place has a true mixologist's cocktail list and they do all of their own infusions, etc. They did not make their own bitters, but who really cares? Angostura needs business too! Lol. I digress. I ordered the "wipe out" to start and then thought I'd test the bartendress as I had been admiring a bottle of Aperol and asked for an Aperol Spritz which she quickly produced much to my delight and enjoyment. The menu is short and sweet here and though I was disappointed that the much raved about chicken liver toast was off the menu I really enjoyed the pei mussels and the devils on horseback. Had brunch on Sunday -- we had to wait for about 1/2 hour but that didn't seem like it was too much. I love the decor and the music (lots of indie rock) - very hip feeling inside and I love the fact that it's tucked away in an alley. Artichoke dip a lot of others have raved about was delicious and a must! Good bloody mary's and so-so bellini's ... I recommend the cheeseburger and fries/salad. I was back in NYC for a week and my friends wanted to take me to Freeman's; they said it was very "me." Well...if a hidden restaurant in some random alleyway with taxidermy on the walls is "me" then heck yeah! We went on Thursday around 9:30pm. The hostess was nice but the line of people was out the door so there was really nothing she could do to seat us any faster. We hippity-hopped over to La Esquina for drinks and came back 45 minutes later. As for the food, the Devil on Horseback (roasted dates with a soft cheese, all wrapped in bacon) is tongue-gasmic. Ordinarily I'd tell you fruit and meat with cheese is disgusting but it was absolutely delish. We had 2 orders. The artichoke dip appetizer was also great --- small chunks of artichoke (not the pureed goop) baked with cream and cheese. The mac 'n cheese and sauteed brussel sprouts were also good but not spectacular. With so many starters, we all shared the seared filet mignon for the main course. I wasn't in love with the horseradish butter served with the beef but I think that's just my preference. Our waiter was a sweetie pie and service was very friendly. A lovely little place with a cozy neighborhood feel. Freeman's doesn't accept reservations for parties under 6 so prepare to wait a bit. The extremely unique atmosphere and the mind blowing artichoke dip are the two qualities that picked this place up from the ashes of a 3 star and turned it into a solid 4. The atmosphere was fantastic, a very tough experience to match in NYC. The artichoke dip will live up to any hype you read here or hear elsewhere, however, the rest of the food didn't blow me away. While it was very good, It just felt like your above average American cuisine. Very hearty dishes, lots of butter, and large portions. It is a cut above the rest and would be herald by anyone who is in search of comfort food, but I wasn't blown away. I've only been to freeman's for brunch, but I can tell you the brunch is excellent and I would whole-heartedly recommend any meal there on the strength of the handful of brunches I've had here. And if it were more conveniently located to me via train (by the time I make it out of the house for brunch I'm in too much of a weakened state of hunger to take too many trains on the way to my food) I'd be here pretty frequently. The first time I came I had what was basically their highbrow version of creamed chipped beef. Instead of dried beef, it was tender braised beef, with real smooth creamy sauce made of the braising liquid - rather than some unidentifiable cream sauce, served over toasted crusty fresh bread - rather than wonderbread toast. It was AMAZING. Loved it. Would definitely recommend it if you want a breakfast that sticks to your ribs, and who doesn't? But, they've changed their menu and its gone! However I think I may have found my new one-true-love, roasted winter squash and mushroom hash with a fried egg and maple creme fraiche. Mmmmmmgghhhhhhhh. Let me at it! Anecdotally, last time I was at Freeman's my companion and I noticed that the person next to us had left his bag and tried to be helpful by giving it to the hostess and alerting them to the situation - until a gentleman we had not noticed before sat down at said table and started freaking out about his missing bag! We didn't notice him drop his stuff there and the table was clear, and he was away for a long time...our mistake! The hostess returned his bag to him, but the rest of the time we were there he continued to complain loudly about how the hostess STOLE his bag. To strangers at other tables and passersby - what an obnoxious douche! We thought we were being helpful but we effed up. :( Freeman's also presents a significant challenge, and that is: leaving without running into Loreley across the street for some .3L baby beer, and/or making an attempt to stuff some camembert in my tum as brunch-dessert. read more

The place resembled a rustic cabin decorated with worn mirrors and taxidermy. The drinks were pretty good. I had a well made martinez, but my Blood and Sand was too sweet. The artichoke dip was creamy and chunky. I wanted the sea bass but they were out, so once again I had the trout. It wasn't cooked nearly as well as the one at Minetta. I'm a huge brunch person and I've been to many brunch places in the city. This by far, hands down is one of the best brunch places. YOU MUST TRY THE ARTICHOKE DIP. It is the BEST artichoke dip i've ever had. aside from that my bloody mary was delicious and my pulled pork sandwich was awesome. My friend had the poached eggs and cheddar cheese gritz and she couldn't stop telling me that good it was. In her words "its the best breakfast I've had in ages." I almost gave up going here because finding this place was so frustrating. Once I finally found it though, I really dug its funky alleyway and the rustic, log-cabin decor. We had the poached eggs w/cheddar cheese grits and raised waffle for brunch. Simple food, some might even say bland, but I though both were pretty good. Other menu items being served around us seem to be worth trying out too. It is decorated like an old farmhouse and the long, narrow, dingy alley is the portal to... Montana maybe? Our food was great! This wasn't really my favorite place I came to while in New York. We came here for brunch to meet some friends..the atmosphere and decor are great. If I were writing a review slowly on those two aspects, it would be 5 stars, hands down. I just wasn't blown away by the food. I ended up ordering the smoked trout, which really, was just a glorified breakfast I have had in any concierge lounge in a Marriott. It came with 3 pieces of overly toasted sourdough bread, a horseradish aioli, smoked trout, a few peppers, and hard boiled egg halves. I think I paid far too much for it.... Also, what's up with the mirror in the women's bathroom only being for women who are taller than 6'? I couldn't even look in the mirror while standing on my tip toes... So I've passed this place before and thought it looked cute and then separately heard great things about "Freeman's Alley" yet never put two and two together. So I didn't even really realize that this is the place I was headed until I Googled it. My friend took me there for my birthday dinner and I was very impressed. We walked in without a reservation late on a Tuesday if you need ideas on when to go without waiting. The restaurant has almost a calm, old world feel to it kind of like Gramercy Tavern. Maybe it's the rich mahogany or the heads of hunted animals on the walls. Either way my dad or grandfather would love this place. The wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive and the food was well priced for the portions and the taste. We shared the marinated beet and citrus salad with watercress and creme fraiche dressing which was light and filling and then I finished it off with seared filet mignon with sweet and sour onions, mashed potatoes and horseradish cream. I originally planned to order the hunter's stew because it sounded interested and appropriate for the locale but the waitress firmly insisted I get the filet. It was perfectly cooked with juices pouring out of it. Overall a very nice dinner. read more

Freemans is probably one of the best food finds I have ever found in NYC in regards to high quality food in the casual yet fine dining atmosphere of New York. Honestly, I was very hesitant to search for this place. TIP: you have to walk down a dark alley to get to this place, when you walk down the alley, it seems random and shady but you should be able to see the restaurant's lights at the end of the alley and it almost becomes an adventure with great food at the end of the tunnel. Freeman's remote location gives it this comforting sense of isolation from the busy streets. It's a nice get away and the location as well as the food and decor transport you to a different place. Now onto the food! Omg the grilled pork loin was amazinggggggg! It had this fatty and meaty flavor to it which was all it together with a slight sweet taste that lingered on your tongue asking for MOREEEE. while the pork loin was indeed large, my only complaint was that there wasn't more....since im a fatty. In addition, the potato salad was really crisp and yummy! It helped compliment the pork loin's savory flavor with a somewhat acidic and creamy contrast. ALSO GET THE MUSSELS. the mussels I believe are not changed as often on the menu and they are so yummy. Fresh, tantalizing, and delish. I really could not have asked for a better starter. I was a great way to start the meal especially since i was eating meat. Surf and turf is the key to happiness ;)! Despite the incredible food, I was a bit disappointed with the Mac and cheese. It is good Mac and cheese without a doubt, but I thought it was overhyped from reviews and really lacked that unique flavor which I found in the other dishes. Absolute best cocktails in the city. The "old maid" gets in your veins - it's a cocktail that is not often on the menu. I just recently learned that the head mixologist Yana, no longer works there. Well, if you still want the amazing cocktails (Old Maid - mint/gin/lime OR the Deveraux - Ginger/whisky) you have to see if Frank is working. I downgraded from 5 to 4 stars due to Yana leaving. I don't actually enjoy the food at Freeman's. BUT I adore the artichoke dip - huge chunks of fresh artichoke. Love this spot. It's down an alley (felt like Melbourne) and it opens up to this old house in an apartment building. It's so much fun to just wander in there. You'll earn cool points with people not in the know because it's at the end of an alley and stuffed animal heads adorn the walls inside. It feels a lot like some of the old pubs in London. If this place were truly hidden, it would make a great date place. Unfortunately, everyone knows about it. Also, they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more people so the result is many many parties of 6+ people. Freemans doesn't feel as intimate as you wish it did. I wish I had been hungrier when I went for dinner. The special of the day (rabbit on pasta) was delicious. The wine list is fine and cocktails are yummy, too. If you're going to do Freemans right, get 5 or more friends, make a reservation and eat all the stuff people before me have recommended. read more

I guess I've been lucky, as I haven't experienced surly service or an insane wait like some other reviewers have mentioned (our waiter was a bit slow, but that's to be expected given the packed nature of the place). The food is homey and filling; "hits the spot" would be an apt description. The artichoke dip comes out hot and bubbling, and you don't even need the small pieces of bread after a few bites--just take your damn fork and finish the rest. A word of caution, however: don't fill up too much on the apps, as you will not have room to finish your main dishes. The skillet eggs, which come with a generous lathering of gruyere, is thick and creamy, and a surefire way to induce food coma. The roast pork sandwich, Freemans' interpretation of a Cuban, is juicy and serviceable as a sandwich (looks better than it tastes, though). Personal favorite: the stewed plums in greek yogurt with vanilla syrup. It's listed as an appetizer, but the richness of the yogurt makes it more than filling as a "light" breakfast, although the syrup was a bit overkill, since the plums make it sweet enough (and man, were those plums DELICIOUS). read more

I still dream about the artichoke dip. If you go here and do not order it you are an absolute fool. Fool I say! I also had the club sandwich which was good but nothing too special. As my first meal back in NYC after a 3 month hiatus, my fiance takes me here as a surprise. First thing.... an alley? really? Yea. I can't say I've seen a place like this in LA (although I'm sure there are). So we walk through the door and the first thing I notice is the decor. Something I'd imagine a sportsman lodge would look like. You know, antlers and skulls and things like that. I'm not sure if I saw shotguns or beartraps, but I'd imagine they're along the walls somewhere. Anyways, onto the food. We went there for brunch so I had the chipped beef over toast and my fiance had artichoke dip. First thing's first. The chipped beef was nothing short of friggin spectacular. I'm not really sure what chipped beef is, but I want it more often now. It was finely chopped beef cooked medium and served over a giant slab of sourdough toast with a fried egg and a creamy sauce of deliciousness on the side. It didn't feel heavy at all despite all of that. 1.. 2.. gobbled up gone. While I didn't particularly like the artichoke dip (I'm not a fan of artichoke really) I APPLAUD the massive amounts of artichoke actually in the dip. I mean, you go to a dump like applebees, order an artichoke dip and you get a bowl of cream cheese, spinach and maybe some artichoke powder. or something. I'd go back here in a heartbeat. The place is virtually hidden from public view. I discovered the restaurant while walking around the Lower East Side one morning and made it my primary objective to eat there immediately. Saturday afternoon, my dream was realized as I arrived at Freemans 30 minutes before 4pm, the cutoff time for Brunch. The place was packed but I scored a table within 5 minutes. I started off with a latte and artichoke dip as an appetizer. For my entrée, I ordered their version of Eggs Florentine, featuring eggs and spinach in a skillet topped with gruyere cheese, served with buttered sourdough bread. I also ordered a side of cheesy grits. Everything from the latte, to the artichoke dip, to the butterscotch bananas foster with salted caramel ice cream we ordered for dessert (I couldn't resist), was delish. My cup of sugar with splashes of expresso and steamed milk, I mean latte, was literally one of the best I have had in the city; so good, I nearly got one to go the following morning. The gruyere cheese served with my main dish was a first for me. It had a pungent odor but meshed well with eggs and sourdough bread. However, I doubt I would it again simply because the smell was a little much. There is an intriguing cocktail menu worth checking out, possibly on a repeat visit when I need to impress out-of-towners with my knowledge of hidden eateries. The restaurant specializes in "Rustic American Cuisine" and definitely has the same vibe; think part hunting lodge, part Connecticut home. I came here with 2 of my girlfriends the other day for brunch and the first thing we realized is that if you are not careful, you will completely miss the place. It's located on Rivington between Bowery and Chrystie, but beware that it's really "inside the alley" as the site mentioned. There's no sign pointing to the restaurant and the restaurant itself doesn't have a name sign. I passed by it a few times (and my friends did too) before we finally found it. I ordered a ginger beer, which was quite good and I highly recommend it for those of you who don't want an early drink or just don't drink. We had the Hot artichoke dip... o-m-g... there was SO much artichoke!!! The cheese just took me by storm and I think we tore apart that dip in minutes! For food... the three of us ALL got the same thing - the smoked trout. Ok, it's true, we lack individuality... but hey, it was delicious! The service was quite good as well. They don't take reservations so we had to get there early and put our names down. But they were able to accommodate us and also moved us to another table when we had a problem with the draft that kept on coming in through the door (we sat right in front of it). The decor is lovely - very new American... and it's definitely worth it just to go there to take some pictures of all the walls and the bar. read more

Came here during the summer with my roommate and another girl from my sorority. I'm not the biggest fan of the lower east-side, and the entrance to Freemans was peculiar. I remember smelling an odd odor that made me slightly hesitant to enter. However, the restaurant itself is wonderfully decorated. I remember waiting to be seated and staring around. Everything was "interesting"... the people at the bar were interesting, the decor was interested, the waiters were interesting.... I sat down with the intention of not eating too much as I was still pleasantly full from lunch. The food was very good. We shared a heart artichoke dip that I burnt my tongue eating (it's a good thing...even though it was painful afterwards). I want to say I go ta pork dish... which was also very good, because I remember walking away from the restaurant with the distinct feeling of eating too much... Their iced-coffee was delicious, the artichoke dip was possibly the best I've ever had, and their eggs/potatoes/bacon - perfectly cooked, moist, delicious, amazing. They have great bread too! The service was slow- but the waiter was apologetic and recognized it was slow, and made every effort to make sure we were full of coffee and dip before our food got there, so I wasn't the least bit upset about the long-ish wait on the food... it was WELL worth it. I've heard about this place for a while now, but never had the chance to experience it myself until last night. I love that this is tucked away at the end of a small alley and warm rows of hanging lights invite you in. The interior is great! Its like someone from the Audubon Society came and decorated with taxidermy hanging off the walls in each room. Rustic old time charm. The food was excellent, i ate an appetizer while waiting for a table to open up ( they don't take reservations for smaller parties, so it seems like your guaranteed some kind of a wait. we waited about 30 min.) Devils on Horseback - cheese stuffed prunes wrapped in bacon....so good! And my main course was Grilled Eden Brook Trout with thyme, garlic, lemon. The whole fish was served and de-boned perfectly. It tasted great! They also have 2 bars which were both pretty crowded, but worth the wait. Excellent bartenders and a great cocktail selection. I enjoyed a nice twist on my fav cocktail, The Green Point. One thing i didn't like is that for a restaurant with so much thought and time put in decorations, it's a shame they could not have hand painted the large signs at the entrance which ask to be courteous to neighbors. the giant black and white signs are a bit of an eyesore read more
