The challah bread here is very good. I tried the carrot cake and the cookies and they were way too sweet for me.

My boyfriend recommended this place for me, becuase my daughters birthday is coming up and I needed to order some cupcakes. 1st impression: everything is impressive, organized, and smells delicious in there. 3 or 4 ladies working behind the counter, only 2 customers at this time. Talked to one lady, dont know her name(no one has name tags in) was telling her what kind of cupcake I wanted and pulled up a picture. 1st lady answered a phone call, so another lady helped me out. Younger Hispanic girl with kind of "gangsta" talk. I showed her the picture and she told me that we cant do that becuase it has fondant on it. Ok fine..at this point I was trying to collaborate with her, trying to figure out a design together. But no, she didnt give any opinions, just very few and didnt really explain. I'm not sure if she seemed bored with me cuz I was asking all sorts of questions about sprinkles, what different designs you have, and if we can put any fillings in the cupcakes. I felt she was about to roll her eyes at me. At one point, I couldnt hear her cuz she was mumbling. I, myself finally came up with a design..hopefully the design and flavor of the cupcakes will taste better than the customer service I received. Yes, surprising I put an order in after the crappy service. Going to place called "frenchs bakery" you would think it would have a motherly/grandma feel to it. Complete opposite. Unless the staff gets a nicer facelift I will not be returning, which is a shame becuase I want to eat it all. read more

The other day II was driving a little lost and saw the French's Pastry Bakery sign in Costa Mesa.. I had read about their great quality and told myself: "This is a wonderful time to check out this bakery!" I was not too impressed with what i saw here. There wasn't very much on their shelves. However, they had a weekly sale on their cookies. ($3.95 a dozen.) These included the rugala which is one of our favorites. So I purchased a dozen of the apricot and raspberry rugalas. Also a dozen of their other varieties. My husband likes Napoleons and they had one left for over $4.00. However, I passed because I saw a very sweet looking icing on top which hubby would not want to eat. We thought that the rugala tasted GREAT and what a deal! However, two days later they no longer tasted great but tasted STRANGE!. (We wonder if they use lard?) The other cookies looked gourmet but when biting into them they all tasted too much like sugar.. No REAL flavor! WHY?? The only other customers were two teenage girls who should NOT get hooked on sugar at their young age. Being small business owners we like to support non corporate entities. But are these owners the original owners? Or, were they bought out by someone who wants larger profits using very inferior ingredients?? We have taste buds so we know what is good. We won't be back to "French's"!! read more

Just ordered a Birthday cake for my wife's 50th Birthday to be delivered to Scott's Seafood. I talked to Brenda and repeatedly went over what should be written on this cake " Happy Birthday Kathleen ". However when the Birthday cake was brought out at Scott's it was completely blank , without any wishes for a happy birthday for my wife Kathleen! My wife was totally bummed and so was all of her family and all of our friends. Today I called Frenche's Bakery and talked to Carli who said that the owner would call me today...No Call!! I would Absolutely never buy anything from this place ever again. My wife is still very upset that the Birthday cake did not say Happy Birthday Kathleen!!!! Don't buy from this place! read more

I'm writing this review for my mother who went to go pick up a cake for my brothers birthday today 3/7/16. My mom went in and started looking at the cakes none of the cakes displayed had a sign displaying the type of cake that it is so my mom asked the woman at the counter "what kind of cakes do you guys have?" And she said "the ones we have on display" kind of an unnecessary smart ass answer but anyway, my mom specifically saw a cake she liked so she asked what kind it was was and the woman said it was vanilla. We drive 40 minutes home, sing happy birthday and serve the cake and turns out the cake isn't vanilla... it's a tres leches cake. We were very disappointed. Because we wanted to make the best it of it we tried to eat it although we don't really like tees leches cakes but it was too sweet it literally tasted like bread soaked with carnation milk blehh. To give this place the benefit of the doubt maybe the girl at the counter was having a bad day? But it's a really bad mistake to send someone home with a completely different cake, if her attitude would have been better we would have been forgiving. They have a large variety of cookies, cupcakes, breads, cakes, etc etc. It's always pretty busy but the wait is not that long. I don't think I've seen a place with more variety in the area. I don't understand the negative reviews here. I've had nothing but positive experiences. I love cupcakes, and French's is the best. I've tried all the "gourmet" cupcake shops that have opened up in OC, but French's has the best Red Velvet cupcakes out of all of them, hands down. And they cost less, too. Nice and moist and with a heavenly creamy topping. Customer service was great, too. I'm glad I don't live too close to this place though, or I'd be 100 pounds heavier. It's bad enough the place is a quick off and right back on the freeway on the way home from work. Too much temptation. read more

DO NOT BUY from this bakery at all, u ordered a baby shower cake and they showed me a picture and when I picked it up it doesn't look the same at the picture at all, the belly was flat and it looks like a fat girl with big boobs! When I ask them to fix it they said they can't do anything with it because the cake decorator is not there!! Unbelievable!! What a waste of time and money! I came here on a Wednesday around 2pm and it was not busy at all, I wanted a sandwich before class so I got the most basic one called "The Natural" comes with turkey, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and Italian dressing. The first thing she tells me is that she has to check if they have bread... I'm aware it's a bakery but sandwiches are the only thing you offer here that is made upon order so??? Also tell me how she also ran out of tomatoes??? I don't know but I definitely had a unpleasant experience especially with the rest of the staff there just sitting and gossiping. There's no sense of customer service what so ever!! So moral of the story they may or may not have items in their menu they'll update u after you've waited 10 mins. They can make a delicious cake with some fabulous buttercream frosting. Sadly it's hit or miss. I don't mind paying more for a better product but it's extremely disappointing paying $40 for a small cake that doesn't even taste as good as it should especially when I know they sometimes do make a very good cake. read more

I went to buy cup cakes for a baby shower, they are ok no complaints there. When I walked in I wasn't greeted, I was waiting in line while a lady in front of me was attended. Then they finished helping her and then I wasn't greeted nor asked if I needed help ( while I was standing at register). Then a couple came in after me and they started to help them. So I made it known that I was in line and have been waiting and the purple haired lady decided to tell me that she greeted me, and asked if she could help me when that was not done at all. She blamed it on me ring on the phone ( lies I multi task 90%) of the day but fine if she chooses to blame it on me being on the phone. This does not excuse her poor rated Custer service arguing and rolling her eyes at a customer. Well I'll tell you I always buy here for my company and this will be the last time! read more

If you need to pick up something last minute, this is the place to go. They have a great selection of goodies. They were running low on a single layer cake so I didn't have too many to choose from. I bought the single layer white cake with white buttercream frosting. I took it home and we ate it after dinner. Everyone loved it. They have some nerve selling baguettes, much less using the name "French" in the title of their bakery. I can't knock the baked goods, although the cupcakes leave something to be desired. It is the customer service that is the problem with this place, as it has none. I called them today wanting to get two of those strawberry wagon wheels held. Laura states that they can't hold items. Ok, no problem. I call up again and ask if I can pay for them over the phone. The answer, no, it's first come, first served basis. I think it over, call again and ask to speak to a manager. No manager, just someone named Carla (I think). I say, "Well, if no one else has come up to the window asking for the wagon wheels and I am on the phone offering to pay for them, then it is first come, first served basis." This is another place that has been around forever and a day....and there is good reason. A lovely little place, my mom used to buy every one of my birthday cakes here, and when I was super good....she would take me here to indulge in a cream puff. SO GOOD. Nobody makes a cream puff like French's. I am not really a dessert person, but they make these so perfectly. Not too sweet. So Good. Did I mention how good they are? Go there. Now. I stopped by French's Bakery this morning after my physical therapy session. I bought a blueberry scone. The price was reasonable for the size of the scone but the scone's consistency was more like a muffin. They were very generous with the amount of blueberries they put in the scone, however, it was disappointing to eat what was essentially a flattened out muffin rather than a traditional scone. I would probably not try their other baked goods since I'd rather spend my calories on something tastier but prehaps they have other specialities, just not scones. read more

I think overall it's a 3.5 because they don't do Ganache or live flowers for decoration. But the are reasonably priced for their moist & delicious cakes. We ordered alternating tiers of chocolate and yellow cake with butter cream and wrapped in a gold bow. it was from their smaller wedding cakes portfolio but we asked for it for my mom's 50th. Cost less than $100 to serve 45people. They worked with me to determine exactly what we wanted and do it perfectly. read more

Have been a steady customer for 30 years and will continue to be except for their bread!!! My own fault! Shoulda gone to Champagne, Panera or Boudin!!! Ordered a White, a wheat and a raisin for tea sandwich's for a baby shower... Sad! Wheat had a huge air pocket under the crust but it was sold to me anyway :( and was flavorless, wheat bread can have sooo much flavor.. The white was dry, crumbled badly, no flavor here either. The raisin was the worst. Not only extremely cardboard -like in appearance, texture and no flavor ~ the bread was a bizarre shade of yellow/orange? It actually does not even deserve one single star. My friend and I went there for a morning snack and ordered a mini eclair, a coconut macaroon, a danish with cream cheese and chocolate chips, and finally an almond Crescent. Let me tell you guys it it was so gross that I literally wanted to throw up, it was obviously a week old at least. The danish and the Crescent are supposed to be made with a buttery flaky pastry dough, but this was made with most disgusting tasteless dry dough ever. And the cream cheese did not taste like cream cheese at all, even the chocolate chip did not taste like chocolate. The mini eclair custard was too yellow, I have made many many custards before, and it was never that yellow. So I went back to see the lady to tell her that I was not confortable eating an eclair with such a yellow custard, and that I wanted something else instead. Guess what? She wanted to charge me, I could not believe it, so she told me that the mistake did not come from them... omg on top of very disgusting tasteless product they have horrible customer service. I was in need of a German Chocolate Cake for my hubby and we are pretty picky when it comes to desserts. After checking out Susiecakes, Pandor and a few other places, I went on yelp for help and this was on the list for German chocolate cake...The girl at the counter was nice but wasn't too helpful as she had not tried that cake yet. I ended up getting the big one ($29), so excited to try it. Boy, it was a huge letdown when we got home to crack open this baby! It was for my hubby's birthday as it is his favorite. The kids looked forward to a slice of that cake since we walked out of the store and well, my girls exclaimed "look at that chocolate color" when I cut a slice for them. Not sure how old was the cake but the chocolate color was off, more like a very light brown and it was dry as it crumbled on the plate when we dug in. Our family of 5 barely finished 2 slices of that cake, which is unheard of!!! Perhaps, the cake was old or they had an off day but as a homemade baker, I could top their cake without a problem and my baking bar is not that high! So disappointed!!! read more

I have finally figured out why this place is just okay. The bakery is more pan dulce than French. French pastries are buttery and creamy, these pastries are not. The danish are made with some type of yellow batter which looks like pan dulce. If you're looking for a French bakery, this ain't your place. Sooo..... Had a craving for a good croissant, was driving by French Bakery and thought what better place to get one then a bakery with a picture of the Eiffel Tower right on there door...... Upon entry the place looks clean and presentable, and was also quickly greeted by one of the young ladies behind the counter that was extremely courteous and nice. As for the selection of croissants........ There was only 1 kind, now with only one choice of croissants which will happen, you would think it would be a simple butter one, which I would have been happy with. Yet, no, they only had chocolate drizzled croissants. Not the chocolate ones we are all used to that have good tasting chocolate inside that usually come in a different shape then butter croissants, NO. It was a butter croissant drizzled with what tasted and had the texture if chocolate icing, kind if like what u would find in a chocolate covered donut at one of the million donut shops you find in southern Cali. The croissant it's self, was unremarkable. Grocery store bakery croissants taste better. So basically I was disappointed, especially since I just asumed that they would be delectable and ordered 2, one for later (it's in da trash). Now this is just a review if there croissants and there other items may be scrumptious, but when you can not even get the basics right, especially if your marketing yourself as a French bakery, makes ya kinda wonder. We are from NY and NJ so we know our bakeries. they had cute cookies and interesting breads... first red flag, we asked one worker what some bread was.. she didn't know. um ok.. we asked another worker what another type of bread was... she didn't know but guessed. thanks. we picked out a blueberry cake, a bread, a black and white cookie ( we are from NY so had to try that), and some mexican wedding cookies. A good mix to tell how this bakery was.. Blueberry cake was, well, entenmann's at best. It wasn't bad, but wasn't anything to write home about. The bread was decent, as long as you ignored the freezer burn taste. mexican wedding cookie was also ok, but needed to be dunked into tea for more flavor. and finally we tried a bite of the black and white... my husband tried the chocolate end first, and didn't seem too impressed but was eating.. i tried the white part... UGH!! I nearly puked.
