A French bakery hidden in a small shopping center! I happened to find it while looking for a restaurant in that shopping center that is no longer there. They have a large variety of pastries and baked goods. I got a couple of danishes and a muffin for my husband. Everything was yummy. Will definitely return to try others items in the case. read more

We haven't been here since it's been under new ownership and sadly the quality has gone down. We used to love the butter and sugar cookies and thought they might be similar to the cookies we used to love, and sadly the flavor just fell short. The prices also are much more expensive, so it's disappointing to pay more for less essentially. It is cute inside, and the designs were still great but sadly, this bakery is not the same and not as delicious. We also asked if they could put buttercream on a sugar cut out cookie, as the old French's used to do that- their buttercream was delicious, and the lady working the register said "I' m sorry, we no longer do that." While I understand this bakery is (unfortunately) not the one that used to be there at this location, I don't understand why buttercream cannot be applied to a cookie.. we are at a bakery aren't we? Aren't bakeries supposed to have buttercream? Quite confusing that that customer service was not there either. A side of frosting to purchase could have been offered or just a small dollop could have been applied but apparently this bakery cannot accommodate a frosting request. read more

I've been coming to this bakery for years and was a loyal customer under the previous ownership. It used to be one of my favorite neighborhood bakeries because the prices were reasonable and it felt like a great local option for birthday treats, cookies, and cakes. Unfortunately, since the ownership change, the pricing has increased dramatically while the products themselves feel largely unchanged. Most recently, I purchased 12 simple vanilla and chocolate cake pops for a school event and paid $60. At $5 per cake pop, I was genuinely surprised by the cost, especially considering these were standard cake pops without custom decorations or specialty ingredients. This isn't a criticism of the staff, who have always been friendly. My concern is simply that the bakery no longer feels like a good value. The current pricing is comparable to, or even higher than, some well-known premium bakeries in the area, yet the quality and overall experience don't feel comparable. It makes me sad to write this because I used to recommend this bakery frequently. I hope the owners take a look at their pricing because longtime customers will likely notice the difference. read more

This used to be one of the better neighborhood bakeries around. For years, it had a friendly local feel, fair pricing, and the kind of welcoming atmosphere that kept people coming back regularly. Unfortunately, after the ownership change, the entire vibe of the place changed. The prices have skyrocketed -- in some cases feeling nearly triple what they used to be -- yet the products themselves really haven't improved. The cookies, pastries, and ingredients feel largely the same as before, except now everything is priced like a luxury boutique bakery. What's most disappointing is that the warmth and neighborhood feel are gone. It used to feel personal and community-oriented. Now the service often feels cold, transactional, and inconsistent. I understand businesses have rising costs, and I don't mind paying premium prices when the experience and quality justify it. But here, it feels like the pricing changed far more than the actual product or customer experience did. It's unfortunate because this genuinely used to be a staple local bakery that many people loved supporting. Unfortunately the new owners killed it. read more

I've been going her since I was a kid, but what a disappointment it's become. Went to pickup some chocolate chip cookies today for the JG picnic. "We're sold out". The other option was a $3.75 cookie, I asked the price on (100) and she says $3.75 each. I left and went across the street to Nothing Bunt Cakes for great service and a savings of roughly $200. Sadly, won't be back to French's. Ever. read more

I live in North OC. But whenever in the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area, I ALWAYS stop by The French Bakery to pick up a little delicious, incredibly fresh, and flavorful baked treat. It's a very hard decision as to what to choose, as the bakery makes their cookies, pastries, cupcakes, macarons....well just everything at such a very high quality and with great care; and all equally top notch! Upon entering this bakery, one is welcomed by such a delicious aroma! The entire French Bakery team are super friendly and accommodating! The bakery is sparkly clean and charming in its furnishings and seasonal decor. If I lived closer, The French Bakery would indeed be a daily habit! read more

They turned out fabulous and delicious. While waiting for my order, I couldn't help but admire their abundance of pastries. This is our go to bakery for any special event. The first time we used them was two years ago for my son's first birthday. They made a beautiful two tiered cake for us. It was so incredibly delicious, creamy, decadent and moist. I can't even use enough adjectives to describe how amazing this was. Every time we go my husband has to get their cheese danish. Literally anything you get here is going to be perfection. As soon as you walk in, the smell alone is worth a trip. They also sell candles with that smell. The staff is fairly friendly. read more

This hole in the wall gem gives you a slice of French cafe experience! I recently went to Paris and I miss it but I can confirm the pastries and coffee taste authentic-it made me feel like I was back in France! The coffee flavor is robust but not bitter, and was the pick-me-up I needed after a long day. The very kind lady working there even gave me a free cookie with my coffee purchase! Found this cute little shop after having a meal at Tatsunoya two shops down. They sell baked goods and were having a sale on their buttercream cupcakes and I could not resist. The shop is a little small but they have a nice amount of offering on display to choose from. The cupcake is nice and moist and the service is friendly, fast and efficient. This was my first time trying this Bakery and I was SO HAPPY I did. I'm a big fan of Marzipan Princess Cake or often called Swedish Princess Cake. This has been my favorite for many many years and being that I've been to Europe many times I KNOW what good Marzipan made with REAL almonds taste like! Sadly Just about ALL of the bakeries in Orange County that "Claim" they know how to make this rare treat fall short, very short. You end up paying a lot for mostly Fondant and artificial flavoring! I pre- ordred this cake about 8 days before hand and on Christmas Eve it was ready. My guests raved about it and they ALL said it was the BEST Marzipan Princess cake I have EVER served! (Thats saying a lot because host Christmas each year for the past 14 years) Usually I have a bunch of left over cake but NOT this year! I also tried a few of thier Gingerbread men. They were fresh and almost too cute to eat, they were also delicious. The ladies working there were very nice and appricated me as a customer. Something that's lacking at a lot in buisnesses lately. So fellow Yelpers if you're looking for a Marzipan Princess cake or fresh quality baked goods, this is your place! OH and this place is very resonable too! Win Win! read more

I needed a cake last minute, not only just a cake I needed a heart-shaped cake custom-made the manager Claudia went above and beyond to make sure that I could get this custom cake done within the time. I ordered a small (8inch) heart shaped wedding cake for our wedding. It was a white cake filled with Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries. It was so beautifully decorated. It turned out exactly as we wanted. The best part of the cake, however, was how unbelievably delicious it was. It was absolutely perfect in every way. Our bakery has been an Orange County tradition since 1955-first as the Cupcake Bakery from 1956-1976 and since then as French's Cupcake Bakery. It has been recently rebranded as Le Petite Magnifique French Bakery as of 2024. Owned and operated by locals to Costa Mesa. All of our baked goods are made on the premises by our skilled staff. Will you have King Cake for Mardi Gras?

Hi Karen. Yes, we will have King Cake. Unfortunately we are not able to take any more orders, so we will make as many as we can for Monday and Tuesday and it will be first come, first-served.

What kind of buttercream is the icing on your cupcakes? Do you offer any cakes or cupcakes with Swiss buttercream?

Hi Diem. We only do one type of buttercream, so unfortunately Swiss buttercream is not an option with us.

Hi! I was wondering if you have any vegan options?

Hi Melissa. we do, but it is very limited. We have a dessert item called Peanut Butter Bar and a cookie called Walnut Divinity. Those two items are the only items which qualify as vegan and they are both carried in the store on a daily basis.

Hi Austin. With sufficient advance notice, we are able to make custom cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

Will French's Cupcake Bakery be making King Cakes this year for 2021 Mardi Gras?

Yes, we will be making King Cakes. We are already accepting orders (and they don't have to be just for Mardi Gras day). Please try to give us at least a few days advance notice when calling to place your order. Thank you.

It carried the roll. The hazelnut twist was kind of what you would expect. A twisted pastry but with a hefty amount of hazelnut-chocolate spread thru the layers. We sat in a little nook, where there was a magnetic black board, where there were word tiles you could rearrange in any way. It was a nice place to just look around at all the sentences the community wrote. Chess tables were also available as extra seating. Overall, the service was good, but could be better when warming up pastries, so that the customer can enjoy them properly!

I would've ordered more, but was flying back to sac in a few hours so had to limit what I ordered to bring back. This location is the original and it is crowded inside since they sell goods also. I believe they have a few tables for dining in outside, bit I've never dined in so cannot speak to that. I'll continue to go here, or one of their other locations when I'm in So-Cal.

Also the food for breakfast and brunch it's really disappointing... since opening they have had the same exact menu with no new menu items, no creativity and just outright bland it so desperately needs a change. The absolute ONLY reason why I gave this review 3 stars instead of 1 is because of the sourdough country loaves... WOW, I would say it's the best bread in OC and the only reason that I'd come back. So if you're looking for a quality sourdough loaf definitely come in for that.... It's not often that I feel a business who does super well should be at 4 stars instead of 5, but I would say for how small this place is, the service is just okay, and I think the prices are quite high for certain things. You will be serviced quickly, at least in the time I've been here, but I think this place has room for improvement - but that's just my opinion. It's good, but I'm not blown away. I would still recommend giving this place a try, because their croissants are wonderful as it the bread - but hard to compete with a few other well known bakeries.

I will say it does air on the sweet side but I view it as a small indulgence every now and again. Every crispy bite makes it worth it!
