    a sign for a bakery
    Anita L.

UPDATED 06/20/07: WOW I never thought yelp's exposure was getting this wide. This week, I've been getting a whole bunch of PMs from various sources regarding yelp. One of those was from Sunflour Bakery's owner Kathy who asked me to go into her store so I could give her some opinion regarding her products. When I arrived she immediately was concerned about the review I wrote (see below) and how I didn't like their cookies. Well... I told her that the cookies on that particular day were not good. I told her that I did give her cake a great review though. So Kathy stood up and grabbed one of the decorated cookies from the display and asked me to try it. I opened the package and took a bit off. Hey, it was a sugar cookie with frosting. For a sugar cookie, it was good. Then she nudged us to try the chocolate muffin. Well, for something which had no dairy in it, was vegan, organic, gluten-free etc etc, it was great. The muffin was moist and had wonderful texture. Same with the other one (I didn't get the name of that one) with the swirl in it. I told Kathy "hey these are good, but the one I had when I wrote the original review weren't". As I was told, they do not specialize in cookies, but rather, their focus is on wholesale. Kathy said she was not too concerned about promoting the retail side of it. They do get some foot traffic, but their main focus is on the catering side: wedding cakes, birthday cakes, breads which are sold in stores such as Mother's Market etc. They are the ONLY Kosher bakery in the whole of Orange County. Basically, Kathy was concerned about my less than favorable review, but hey, I didn't give it 1 or 2 stars. I gave it 3 stars. However, I'm impressed with a business owner who took the time to find out what her customer(s) were not happy with and tried to rectify the situation. Plus, the things we sampled today were pretty good. I'm upping my review. 4 stars for the products available in the store. 5 stars for filling a niche market not served by any other business. 4.5 stars total. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tucked away in a small street amidst a residential area, it was pretty hard to find and even with instructions, we weren't quite sure if we were in the right area. Lil guy was attending a birthday party here so we tagged along. The bakery specializes in cookies and this time of year, in gingerbread houses too. We bought some of the cookies and they weren't all that great in taste however, to be fair, the birthday cake they baked was awesome. The birthday party comprised of plain cookies and the kids would decorate them. They were given baker's hats to wear while decorating the cookies. The kids got bored after about 45 mins and then started running around hitting each other with balloons. The concept is good (kinda like the one I had for lil guy at those paint your own pottery places) but only in theory. The 3 stars is for the cake.

    Best all natural I've tasted
    Desert L.

The best all natural bread i have eaten in a while. I love to eat healthy and try new foods and experience new foodie restaurants as much as I can just to enjoy a simple life with food however I am a diabetic at the low end where it can be reversed but every once in a while I will like many many slip up and eat tasteful carbs lol.. its just life and we like what we like but we just have to eat certain foods in moderation . I am so guilty right now because I can't even show a picture of the bread because I ate it all‍

When we ordered the cinnamon roll, there was no option to heat it up, so we thought they would have done it already. When it was served, it was rock solid. So, we asked them to heat it up. However, after a few minutes, it still wasn't that gooey and the inner core was still pretty tough. Perhaps they could have warmed it up so that it was evenly softened. Overall, the cinnamon roll was alright. It was a brioche roll so you would think it might be lighter and fluffy, but ours was pretty dry. However, the cream on top was insanely good. It carried the roll. The hazelnut twist was kind of what you would expect. A twisted pastry but with a hefty amount of hazelnut-chocolate spread thru the layers. We sat in a little nook, where there was a magnetic black board, where there were word tiles you could rearrange in any way. It was a nice place to just look around at all the sentences the community wrote. Chess tables were also available as extra seating. Overall, the service was good, but could be better when warming up pastries, so that the customer can enjoy them properly!

The cream is super smooth and filled with actual durian pulp--no artificial flavor at all. The sponge is so light and fluffy that it almost melts in your mouth, and it pairs perfectly with the rich, fruity durian cream. I already love fresh durian and durian ice cream, but this was my first time trying a durian cake, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The 6-inch cake was $68, so it's definitely a treat, but I'd happily buy it again. Just make sure to order a few days ahead. The service was amazing too. Since it was our anniversary, they added a cute "Happy Anniversary" sign to the cake at no extra charge. When we picked it up, they even reminded us to head straight home because the summer heat could affect the cake. Sadly, the jasmine tea cheesecake was one of the worst desserts we've had. It tasted so unpleasant that we ended up throwing away what you see in the photo because we simply couldn't take another bite. The checkout experience was also a little unusual. The cashier told us the credit card machine wasn't working, so the only payment options were cash or sending a Zelle payment directly to the owner. There was a small handwritten sticky note with an individual's name and phone number for the Zelle payment, which felt a bit odd. To be fair, there wasn't a large selection available when we visited, so it's possible they have other pastries or desserts that are much better than what we tried. However, based on our experience, the item we purchased was disappointing, and the $12 definitely didn't feel well spent. On the positive side, the décor and overall aesthetic were lovely and were probably the bakery's strongest feature. But as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover... and you can't judge a bakery by its ambience either.

We waited outside by the pick-up window after ordering. Service was fast for the doughnut and my coffee, but they seemed to forget about my husband's cold brew, so I had to ask about it after a few minutes of waiting. Not a big deal, just was surprised it took so long when it was such an easy order! We both enjoyed the buttery/salty doughnut, and my coffee was delightful!
