What happened to this bakery?! My family has ordered many cakes from here over the years and has always had pleasant experiences. A few months ago we threw a 60th birthday party for my mom, her request was a cake from French's. My mom and I went in a few weeks before to place our order and should have known right away this would be a bad experience. The employee we spoke with was so rude and short with us. We were trying to figure out what size cake we should order based on our guest number and the employee acted so annoyed that we had questions. We asked to see pictures of different cake sizes and she said there were no samples. At one point she even just walked away from us. Come to the day of the party, my mom went to go pick up the cake. The bakery did not have a cake for us!! They said they had no record of our order despite the fact we had a receipt and I emailed a picture of the ombré cake we wanted, and had confirmed over the phone they received the picture. The employee at the bakery told my mom she refused to speak to her because she was upset.. um hello who wouldn't be?! We had 75 people coming in a few hours and you don't have a cake that we had already paid for. This bakery gets one star only because after I called they made their decorator come in to bake the cake. I asked for them to deliver the cake since we don't live near by and they refused. I think that would have been a nice gesture considering you put my mom in tears on her birthday. At least we got a full refund and the knowledge that sadly, French's is no longer the great bakery it once was. We won't be returning. read more

The pastries are great, however a HUGE turn off is that they handle money / cash and serve your cakes with the same hands, without using gloves / washing hands in between; and they actually touch the pastries with their bare hands, not even though the paper! I will never go there agin because too many times I was watching them like a hawk to make sure they handled my food through paper napkins, but they actually used bare hands after handling previous customer's cash, and I had to walk out. read more

A phenomenal bakery for pastry, cake specialties, cupcakes, exotic cookies, and a few artisan breads, just spectacular! I could eat there all day. This is a special place for people who want something special, from a giant Wagon Wheel for a group, or the same broken down to a Danish, just great. You cannot be disapointed, I have been doing home parties, office, and myself for more than 20 years and it is every bit as good. And they make a delicious cheese bread, with or without jalapenos! My co-worker got a lemon cake for a baby shower and let me tell you it was the best cake I have ever had! I am writing this review because I wish I had a slice right now lol. The cake was moist and the lemon filling was perfect, there was butter cream frosting in top. The cake was made into a baseball and was really cute also. But for me- it was all about the taste! I ordered a 2-tier cake for my daughter's 4th birthday party after being referred by a friend who buys cakes here often. I was totally shocked at how dry the cake was. I could even hear some of my guests commenting on how "gross" the cake tasted. I had bought cookies and other pastries here before which I liked but the cake was a no-go. Needless to say it was very embarrassing for my husband and I as hosts to offer such a disgusting cake...Plus I paid over $110 for it. Totally not worth it! read more

Went to the bakery today to order a wedding cake. What a joke they trough the book at us had us sit outside never came out to answer our questions. The girl that was suppose to help us left the other girl was selling brownies to someone and never came outside. I wouldnt trust them if my life determined on the them. I was referred to French's Bakery by a friend who said they have high quality cakes at a reasonable price. I was looking to have a cake made to do a gender reveal for mother's day and I had a very tight turn around time. French's Bakery was not my initial choice but due to the tight turnaround and their willingness to get it done, this seemed like a good choice. I called a couple days ahead to let them know I would be finding out the gender of my baby on Thursday and would want the cake to be ready by Sunday to reveal my little bundle of joy to my family. I did a little homework ahead of time and found several ideas that I really liked so I could take it in and they would be able to put together my idea. I even already picked my cake flavor and filling to make things very simple. On Thursday afternoon, immediately after my doctor appointment I drove to French's Bakery. The girl who helped me out was very nice and friendly and was able to look at my pictures and tell me which cake they could do. I originally wanted to do a chocolate cake with vanilla filling [which I thought could be dyed blue for my gender reveal]. The lady informed me I would need to do vanilla cake to dye the cake blue. So I said okay no problem. I will do vanilla cake dyed blue with chocolate filling. I asked if it would be okay for me to pay for everything that afternoon and have my mom pick the cake up on Saturday since I would be out of town. She said this would be no problem. Saturday morning my mom picked up the cake and I had her send me a picture of the cake and it looked amazing. They did a good job replicating the picture I originally saw and I was super happy with the product. On Sunday afternoon [Mother's Day], the whole family was together to celebrate and I figured this was the perfect time to reveal the gender. We face-timed our family members who could not be with us so that they could partake in the gender reveal. After a fun introduction of going through some of the old wives tales, my husband and I cut into our cake only to be thoroughly disappointed with the product. When I pulled the slice of cake out to put on the plate my family was left confused as to what our baby would be and I was left feeling embarrassed and upset that my cake was not what it was supposed to be. The sad thing is the cake tasted great, so the product is good if they can get your order correct. I had been planning this gender reveal since I found out I was pregnant. Unfortunately, a gender reveal is not something you can just do over. What makes the situation worse is my husband and I were told we could never have children so for us this is really special. I can definitely say my trust has been shaken and I will never use this bakery again. I would much rather spend the extra money to use Cinderella Cakes who did my wedding cake, so I know they have a great product and can deliver the correct product. So if you are looking to buy a pre-made cake they can be a good choice, but if you are looking to do something special or custom buyer beware. read more

Drove a decent way to get to French's to use a Groupon I had purchased. Employees told me I could not use the Groupon and that I needed to contact Groupon for a refund. Was then going to get the special that they had listed on their board outside the bakery. Told that was the special from yesterday. Why keep it on the board then? Ended up purchasing some bread and Danish since I had made the trip. Both were pricey and average at best, with all items being very dry and fairly tasteless. Everything looks really pretty in the displays, but based on my experience, I would not go back nor recommend. read more

My friends have been going to French's bakery for their Black Forrest Cake for years. I volunteered to go pick up the cake as I've never been to the bakery previously, I've only enjoyed their cakes. The staff was very polite and attentive. I love how they wrote happy birthday on a piece of plastic and laid it over the top of the cake. Genius! It was absolutely delicious and devoured immediately! Not only did I get a fantastic cake I met a customer, a very nice gentleman there as well. It was the start of a great day! ... I'll be back in the future for another cake. I wonder if he will be in there as well when I am?! read more

My family has come here since it opened years and years ago. My dad's favorite pastry to order was the custard eclair. I remember the flavor being so fresh... certainly NOT the case now. The eclair I remember used a fresh rich custard, a fresh pastry, and a thick chocolate frosting. It saddens me that Frech's is not the bakery it once was and has resorted to using less than fresh ingredients. I heard this place served sandwiches and gave them a try for lunch. I got the roast beef and was by no way Wow'd by it. There was that much meat, mostly lettuce and bread, and was quite bland. You can get the same or better at Walmart. This bakery seems to be run by people who are tired of baking. I ordered a red velvet, two-tier cake for my daughters arrival party. First, the cake was red , but not a red velvet cake. It was exactly like the Walmart red velvet cake. It tasted like a regular chocolate cake with red food coloring. I'm from the south and the cake they gave me was not a red velvet cake. Once, I got the cake there were no boxes, or anything to carry the cake. I had to walk out with a two tier cake exposed in the hot sun. How long they have been in business? There products taste no different than big corporation cakes like a grocery store, or Walmart. I can tell they are cheap on the ingredients. The top of the cake fell. Don't worry it was a good thing. It gave me an opportunity to taste it. I'm glad I did, it was awful. Either they do not know how to cook a red velvet cake or the don't care. I'm sure stores like Walmart care about there cakes, but that has nothing to do with taste. The only thing correct about the cake was the color. I've been to this bakery about three times in a two month period, same mediocre food. Some people will eat any thing sweet, however, a 85 dollar cake should not taste like a 20 dollar cake. The CAMP bakery is better; they were my back up ( thank goodness). This bakery seems to be coasting on a publics unawareness of true quality bake goods. I've order their cookies-average, cakes- there are no carrots in the carrot cake( go figure), and the bread-can be found elsewhere. The cake was all frosting and a bland, lifeless, and fowl tasting cake. It was not worth 85 dollars. I highly disappointed, and will take my business elsewhere from this moment onward. read more

I have been going to French's for over 25 years, I have never been disappointed. I have taken in special designs many times and they have always came out better than i would have expected. The chef is an artist! They are 100% right on every time. From breakfast pastries to wedding cakes, everything is delicious and beautiful. I will never buy a cake from a grocery store again. I used to come to this bakery when the French family owned it.....it was great! I haven't been here in years though and so did not know the family had sold it. I found out when I came in last week to personally order two cakes for a baby shower......a half sheet cake for the main cake and a quarter sheet for the spill over in case we needed the extra cake. I specifically told them it was for a baby shower. I wanted yellow cake with chocolate filling on both cakes (my daughter-in-law's favorite flavor of cake). I wanted the white buttercream frosting on both cakes....the main cake being decorated with Dr. Seuss characters, with the fluffy white border trim around the upper edges and lower edges of the cakes. No decorations on the quarter sheet since it was just a back-up cake. When I went in to pick them up, they brought out the quarter sheet first to show me. My mouth dropped and I thought, "What in God's name?!" It looked like a flippin' sports cake done in team colors or something. No fluffy border trim like I ordered and you see on bakery-made cakes. What it was, was a cheesy trim in blue, black and red with "Congratulations" written across the top in RED! Definitely NOT a baby shower cakes and NOT what I ordered! They tried to tell me that on the order ticket, it stated that, that is what I ordered. I told them "That is NOT what I ordered! Why in God's name would I order something like that for a baby shower????!" It was totally unacceptable! Then they brought out the main cake. No fluffy borders on that one either! No border trim around the top and a cheesy, skinny red trim around the bottom. Again, not what I ordered! And where's the trim around the top of the cake??? She told me that the decorators don't put borders around the top when they put a design on the cakes. I told her it's not up to what the decorators choose to do....it's up to what the customer orders and they are to go by what the customer wants and is paying for! And further more, every cake I ever ordered from a bakery, has put the border around the top edge even when I've had decorations or a design on the cake! They offered to discount the cake by $3. And then the girl complained that now they were going to be stuck with a cake that they couldn't use. I told her that wouldn't have happened if they had done what they were supposed to do and made the cake according to customer order. I refused to take the quarter sheet cake. Instead, I picked a ready made quarter sheet cake from the showcase. It wasn't exactly what you would have at a baby shower, but better than a flippin' sport-looking cake! It cost me almost $100 for the main cake and the replacement cake, and I don't know why the girl was complaining they were stuck with a useless cake when it was their fault in the first place and my replacement cake was more expensive than the "sport cake". AND, in the course of all that, the girl looks at me and says, "I know you. I recognize you. You come in here a lot and you always complain about our products." I looked at her and said, "Is that right. Well now, let me tell you something. The last time I was in this bakery was when the French's owned it." She said, "Well, that was 30 years ago." I said, "Well there ya go! 30years! So don't you stand there and tell me you know me and I come in here all the time and complain!" Guess she couldn't say anymore on that! By the way, I also bought a few cupcakes. I thought I better get one for me to taste to see what we would be eating at the shower tomorrow, after the experience I, just had. I know how I summed it up, so I had a friend taste it to see what their opinion was. It was the same as mine.....dry with a coarse crumb, leaning towards cornbread. OMG....I hope to God the cakes taste better than the cupcake! I was ready to tout the bakery up at the shower and recommend them to people, but now I certainly won't be! If anything, I may be apologizing to people for a bad cakes and steering them away from French's......especially after reading some of these other reviews from people that had problems and experiences similar to mine. And the one person who ordered a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and got a lemon cake with chocolate frosting of which the guests couldn't stomach and it went to the trash! I'm supposed to have a yellow cake with chocolate filling. I hope to God mine isn't lemon! Because I'll take it back to the bakery and get some of my money back, as was suggested by the bakery to some of these other dissatisfied customers. I'll never patronize this bakery again. As far as I can remember this bakery makes the most delicious cake. It is a quarter-sheet cake with all the usual items from their menu of cake and filling flavors with a variety of fruits (extra) on top. Service at French's Pastry Bakery is good as they completed it within 24-hours (ordered Friday). They make really delicious cake and their people are very helpful so ask about the many items from their menu. I highly recommend French's Pastry Bakery especially cake. read more

The young lady that helped us out was really helpful, she gave us great ideas on how we can order different cupcakes to go with our wedding cake or how we can also order a full sheet. I was just really happy with everything, I read about another review on here but I believe she is lying because I was the only testing for that hour and the girls are really nice here and in the other stores as well. THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I ordered 2 cakes from them for my daughters first birthday and another birthday for the same day. A friend picked the cakes up for me, and when they got there BOTH cakes were wrong. It was right before the party so I had no choice but serve them. I called the bakery and told them they were both wrong, one cake was made as a lemon cake instead of yellow cake and had chocolate icing, the combination was terrible that people didn't even finish their slice. The WORST part of the entire thing, instead of the owner being apologetic she actually asked me to take the leftover cake from the trash and drive to the store with it to RETURN it for a PARTIAL refund. So basically, they wanted me to take 1 hour out of my day to return the leftover cake for only part of my money back when it was their mistake. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life. Worst customer service ever. I would never recommend this bakery to anyone. Don't waste your money. read more

I walked in to pick out a cake today for my son's 15th birthday. He wanted chocolate cake, easy enough. Went I arrived around one o'clock there were 2 customers being waited on and I stood looking at the cakes. They looked great, although none were labeled as to what was in them. I was not greeted by anyone or told I would be helped soon (the usual when employees are busy at pretty much any business). As one of the customers ahead of me turned to leave, the employee that had been helping her turned around (still not acknowledging me) turned around and picked up the phone. She stayed on the phone a few minutes until yet another employee came out of the back at which time she came to help me. I asked her what kind of cake was inside one of the frosted cakes in the case. She had to ask another employee (who was now on the phone) and then turned back to tell me that it was chocolate cake with fudge filling. Great, success...just what I was looking for. I then asked her to write on it for me, just a very simple "Happy Birthday Aaron". She said sure, took the cake over to the work table and proceeded to spend 5 minutes plus to write those 3 words on a plastic sheet (the ones they use when the top of the cake isn't smooth, which was fine). She wrote in tiny little printed letters so messy that they were illegible and did it in one long line so that when she placed it on the cake the plastic strip hung over both sides of the round cake. I asked her to redo it in cursive and just put it directly on the cake (the long piece of plastic did nothing for the pretty cake underneath). She said ok, and took the cake for another 5 minutes to write again on the cake. Meanwhile, the bakery filled with customers waiting to be helped, not being acknowledged. In defense of one bakery employee, her customer kept making her wait while she took phone calls repeatedly and then would fuss at the employee that it was taking too long there and that she had to go back to work. Anyhow, I digress. One man left and was clearly aggravated when he did so. Finally, my cake was finished, she'd written on the cake in what may have been cursive but I cant be sure because I couldn't read what she had written. She asked if it was ok, at this point I said it was fine, figured it must have been her first day or something and now all of the bakery employees were busy and I really didn't want to wait any longer for someone to fix it. She rung me up (nice surprise, it was on sale....I didn't know because there are no prices on any of the cakes in addition to no product identification labels). So, we put the candles on the cake, sang happy birthday to my son, he blew out the candles and we cut the cake. There's my son, waiting for his slice of chocolate cake.....we pull out the first slice, and it's not chocolate cake. It's marble, mostly white with very little chocolate. I know, I know....first world problems. But really, is it too much to ask that someone have some knowledge of the product they're selling? What if it had been an allergy issue. It was just disappointing and from a bakery that's been around for so many years. I've used them dozens of times but now, I will look elsewhere when I need to order a cake. Are they under new ownership/management? It just didn't seem like the French's I used to rely on for my celebrations. read more

Do not custom order here. Their ready made counter cakes are great as are their treats but ordering from this place is not worth the effort. The first cake I ordered from here had things misspelled and the finish on the cake was spotty with uneven layers of icing. Mind it this was an expensive cake for 100 people. Then they didn't have anything to package it in and I was supposed to transport this heavy cake in patchwork pink boxes in the trunk of my with the top exposed, their recommendation. Today was the last straw, I picked a cake from their book and said to make it look like my husbands car instead of the other one shown. I sent pictures and talked with the staff in person, via email, on the phone twice. In the end, the car was not airbrushed like the one I picked but it looked ok and I needed to be somewhere. Finally cut the cake at our gathering and it's royal icing not buttercream. We talked about this multiple times and was even told that my preferred whipped or cream cheese wouldn't work with the design and buttercream would be best. $40 for a small cake that tasted horrible and didn't look anything like the cake I picked from THEIR book. I think they need a new decorator and staff that actually communicates. It was a simple cake and they ruined it. Please don't do custom orders here, it's not worth your time, money, or disappointment. I hope to hear from the management because this is a recurring problem and I've never heard them address it. This bakery has continuously been a disaster for me year after year. I will NEVER use them again. My friend has gotten a few great looking cakes from them in the past, and I kept hoping they would one day make a great looking cake for my son's birthday. Today was the last straw! We ordered a very simple cake with whipped cream frosting, that simply read "Happy Birthday Name". It looked good for once. We had given up on any cakes from them with a design or picture on it. That is too much of a challenge for them other than "balloons and flowers." They always look awful. I brought the cake home. Set it on the table. Our small female cat jumped onto the top of the box, which dented inward on top, and touched the cake. I called them and asked if we could bring it by to have the name redrawn. It was about a 4" x 2" area ruined. They said sure, bring it in. We do not live close to them. My husband had to MISS part of my son's party taking the cake back. When he got there, they REFUSED to repair the cake. They said to take it to Albertsons or Stater Bros to have it done!!! So my husband went to the nearby Stater Bros where they repaired the cake in a few minutes. It did not look that great. We could have brought it around the corner to the grocery store by our home and had it fixed if they would have told us OVER THE PHONE that they "DO NOT FIX CAKES AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BAKERY!!!!!" Meanwhile, my husband MISSED an hour and a half of my son's party. French's Bakery has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. AND the cake was nearly $40 for a 1/4 sheet cake (8" x 12")!!! This review is for there customer service. Love what they have but I had went in there & purchased some items & asked if they can hold for me which was not a problem. So I waited in line paid for my items & told them I would be back. I came back showed them my receipt told the young girl I was only here to pick up & had already paid. She stated I had to wait in line again. I told her I already had purchased & all she had to do was give me my items that had been on the counter. I have done retail before & we would never have let a customer wait in line again after they had already paid & was only picking up. So I waited again for another 20min & I had purchased 3 items. When I got up to the counter & had her return 1 of the items I bought. Originally I was only going to pick up but since she had me wait I figured she can try & figure out how to make a return which she didn't she had to ask. Some people may think I am being petty but it is all about customer service and when I did retail I was very good to my customers. I will not be going to that bakery again I will go to one of there other locations hopefully they have a clue. read more

I went to French's in Costa Mesa for the 1st time this past week. I've had their wagon wheels before this visit so I knew that I did like their pastries. I bought some danishes, which are essentially mini wagon wheels. I got 2 fruit, a choc chip & cheese, and also a choc eclair. The girl who helped me seemed very nice, but I don't think she was trained very well. She put all of the danishes in a small brown paper bag and the fruit ones stuck to the bottom of the others. I had a lemon curd all over the bag and a strawberry all over the bottom of the choc chip. And the eclair, which isn't tempered choc. (hard choc.) was like a choc pudding consistency. I've had them this way before so thought nothing of it, but the girl actually put it inside of an even smaller white paper bag than the other one. Not a pastry box. Not cool... I had choc all over the place! And when I started to eat it the custard has so much egg yolks in it that it was the same color marigold as the danishes. It really weirded me out. Over all, the taste was ok, but I plan on going in and talking to management about training their servers a little better. I was really shocked about a bakery without a pastry box. I experienced the WORST service today when coming into the Costa Mesa Store today at around 12 today. I came in for my cake tasting appointment and was told that I wasn't in the books. Now, I understand mishaps happen. And it can be argued that I was a bit short with the staff, but it stemmed from their unprofessionalism. When I first came in, my impression was sour because I wasn't even greeting with a quick "HI" or "I'll be with you in a second" from the employee who was standing RIGHT in front of me (who wasn't even dealing with another human, but was pulling cakes from out of the fridge). And even though it was a scheduling error on their end (as I had it written very clear in my planner with CM as my location), I felt like I wasn't dealt with in an accommodating way. The staff failed to express that they were "sorry" or anything like that. The employee just kept saying, "well you can reschedule" - but that's impractical with my very busy schedule. I mean, I would've considered coming in again if I was dealt with a little better. But, I mean, if I was a business owner or employee and knew a potential SOMEONE (me) was interested in dropping $600-$800 on a wedding cake, I would probably try my best to help this customer by whipping something up quick or being very apologetic... neither of which occurred with me. So, I will not be returning for anything or have anything good to say about THIS French's Bakery. However, I'll be sure to give the French's Cupcake Bakery off 17th Street (who I know is not even affiliated with this company) my money instead. This bakery should reconsider how to run their business, as their customer service is again, awful - and mind you, this is how they make money.. from sales from their customers and referrals! I sincerely hope the other three locations are not as incompetent and rude as the Costa Mesa location. They need to figure it out and take a class on customer service... or better yet, hire some people who have some basic customer service AND people skills. :) To me, this is inexcusable - if they treat customers like this right away - imagine how they deal with other things that could maybe go array.
