So apparently this place is a staple in the community and I see why. The food is decent and simple classic dishes. The restaurant however looks very old and dingy and needs an update for sure. I had a stack of pancakes which were cooked nicely and a few desserts. Their so called famous cheesecake was underwhelming and left a lot to be desired but the croissant was delicious. Location: free parking in lot right outside. Close to King George Skytrain station. Restaurant has various flags of countries outside which is very unique and welcoming. Actual restaurant is historic , needs updating but that costs a lot for businesses that really focus on the food and not ambiance or aesthetics. Service: somewhat like cafeteria style. You get a tray and choose and fill up your drinks and choose dessert (from fridge). Order from the cashier next and take a seat with your tray etc, you are given one of those alert devices so when it buzzes and lights up, you go back to pick up your food. Service is not super nice nor friendly but pleasant enough. At the side, you help yourself to condiments and bags/containers if you dont finish your meal. Food: my first time and the portions are huge!! Mushroom burger and fries were enough for two possibly average eaters, with mushrooms overspilling everywhere. Decent and very freshly made. Mango juice tasted not similar to mango but oh well.....everywhere i looked, customers were bringing their left overs home as portions are huge. Others were waiting for their take-outs. Fresgo is across the street from Surrey Central, right beside Staples. I believe it's a hidden gem in Surrey. Outside it does look a little sketchy, but once you walk through the doors, it's the full diner experience. Decor, furniture, and ambience feels very old school and is something hard to obtain in this day of age. There isn't much service to be had here because you just order at a register located at the door and seat yourself. They give you a buzzer to notify you when your food is ready to get picked up. You get water yourself at a water fountain at the side of the restaurant. The food is something different. Everything is made from scratch, from the buns to the patties. I've had their burgers because they're massive and are only $10. Their special is the mushroom burger and it's amazing. LOTS of mushrooms and the patties are the size of my face. Not only is it big, it's also very very delicious. What's really cool is that you can sub out the fries with spaghetti. And it's also a large portion of spaghetti too. Everything on their menu looks promising, such as cabbage rolls dishes and fried chicken. The pizzas there are pretty good but the toppings tend to slide off. There is no way your eyes could be bigger than your stomach at the Fresgo Inn. Portions are simply enormous here - from the man-sized flans in the dessert case to a Ukrainian sausage that's sure to bring out your immature side ("Oh, I've never had a sausage this big" etc.) They have a regular menu of the diner basics - sandwiches, burgers, soup, breakfasts - plus daily specials that came from food's time machine (i.e., spaghetti and meatballs served with chicken AND ribs). Judging from the pictures, some dishes even require two plates to serve, like the schnitzel which comes with Caesar salad and fries. There used to be a Fresgo Inn just off Davie Street as well, but now, the King George Highway one in Surrey is all that's left. So, if you've been fixin' for a (big) side of their fab fries, now you know where to go. Also, they have excellent, greasy but not too greasy, fried chicken. Black Forest cake was a generous size, and lacking nothing in the cream, chocolate, or cherry filling departments. The restaurant has the same cafeteria-style service as the old Davie location, and a cavernous dining room straight out of the '70s. Definitely one of the better old-school greasy spoons I've found, and cheap enough for even my freelance ass to afford. read more

OH MY GOD! As a fat 200lb 12 year old kid my dad would take me to Fresgo on Davie right beside the "Gay-Mart" all the time and even though I was overwhelmed by the crowd that hung outside the place the sheer shining heaven that was a neon lit cafeteria style restaurant was more than enough to make me feel all bubbly inside. The famous mushroom burger was the big thing there where there was a plate completely COVERED in beautifully cooked mushrooms and you could hardly even see the burger itself. Over the years after it closed down I completely forgot about this place until recently when a friend of mine asked if I've ever been to a place called "Fresgo" in Surrey and I remember my eyes lighting up and asking if they had massive mushroom burgers. He said yes and I started freaking out. I had no clue that there were always two locations! This place is still an old school neon lit cafeteria with tons of food to choose from. Sub sandwiches, turkey dinner, pasta, and even cakes. There is something here for everyone. Of course the mushroom burger is the huge draw and for under $10 you get a burger with tons of mushrooms along with a plate of fries, you just can't go wrong with that! If you want to try something old school and love oldies music this is a spot you need to check out. I'm sorry, but monstrous-sized dishes won't win me over if the food isn't good. What's the point? The place is pretty divey... it's a low-ceiling but vast space, with lots of Neon signage expansive seating that you go and seat yourself at. The noise of the kitchen equipment dominates the entire dining room, if you can call it that. The seating is not comfortable. Awkward seats, awkward table bases... means that unless you're okay with wobbly seating, your chairs need to be set WAY away from the table. My 7-year-old son kept on dumping food onto his lap and the floor, at no fault of his own. He'd have to stand to get any closer to his plate. Given the cafeteria-style servery and the cheap decor and seating, you'd expect the prices to be better. $14 for a burger and fries is just average. The meals sure are massive, but what's the point if the quality isn't there? The burgers are on the hugest buns, and the top AND bottom of them are both bun tops. Just cuz they want to make it look bigger. I wonder what they put the bun bottoms in? Because of reading reviews, I had a mushroom burger, and was really unimpressed by everything but the shock of how smothered in mushrooms the burger was. The patties were not well seasoned, and cooked too much that they were dry and quite small. The hamburger sauce was blase... I guess they try to make up for the lack of flavour by adding more sauce. Yay, empty calories! The mushrooms on the burger were quite good, but that was the only redeeming part of the dish. The fries here are quite boring too... bland, slightly tasting of fish due to the shared fryer... I even had some fish batter bits on my plate. The onion rings were probably the worst I've ever eaten. The batter was pasty dough that should have been cooked longer or something. No crispiness whatsoever. I tried some bites of other things too... Roast Beef Dip -- is nothing more than meat on a bun. The jus is watery and flavourless. Mexican Poutine -- standard fries with chili and cheese. The chili is okay flavoured, but has WAY too many beans... the fact that it's mostly garbanzo beans, is really weird too. Really not impressed. The evening after dinner I felt kinda gross from all the heavy food. The one thing that DID look good, on other peoples' tables, is the pizza. If I ever find myself back here, we will probably try that. The crust looked thin and crispy, with flavourful toppings. And not just huge for the sake of being huge. read more

I am aware that burgers and other things are good but if you have never tried the Mushroom sub then you are not living. A juicy combination of sauteed beef, pepperoni salami, mushrooms, melted cheese, sauteed onions, lettuce, tomatoes and huge. Massive. The greasey lovliness drips down your hands. I always add HP sauce and wow it just turns into an amazing sandwich. The location is obviously not for everyone. Upscale folks looking for some hipster type restaurant can go elsewhere. Coming here for lunch really brought back memories for me. The decor and ambiance hasn't change since the 80's. It has been over 20 years since I was last here. Working here was also my first job. Although they haven't renovated during this time, prices have certainly modernized - in other words, it's more expensive than the good ol'days. The Miami Vice 1980's diner feel to it with all the neon I find entertaining. Even the old style grill system where everyone grabs their plate from the chef like Larry David pulling a hero. The boys behind that glass are big, big boys who serve big boy portions. Omelettes are easily six eggs, the mushroom burger is farm on a bun, the beef dip is mighty. Your dollar will go further than a _______ in a _______ here. (feel free to have fun with that mad lib). Bunch of big screens are usually broadcasting the ball game which is always nice. This is my dad's favourite place. Fresgos is definitely an old school kind of restaurant that could do with a renovation, but overall the food is great. Big portions and the price in relation isn't even too bad. Ordering is unique to this place as well--you order when you walk in at the counter and you're given a buzzer and you can find a seat for yourself. When your food is ready, the buzzer lights up and vibrates and so you take it to the counter where you return it and get your food back to your table. Been coming here for years now with my family and we usually only ever comment on the way the restaurant looks. I imagine that if they ever did end up getting a renovation, they'd definitely be buzzing. read more

I first visited the venerable Fresgo Inn in 1987. At the time it was famous for big food, especially the mushroom burger and it was already old. This was the, now closed, Davie St location. When I moved to Vancouver in 1998, we ate meals there at least once a week and sometimes more often. We enjoyed the simplicity and 70's-style decor. Unfortunately, all things come to an end, as did the Davie St location in about 2005. Fortunately, the Surrey location lives on and nothing has changed. The menu is still extensive and very spotty. Somedays, the mashed potatoes are perfect and chunky, other days they are clotted and barely cooked. Somedays, the meatloaf is soft, seasoned and delicious with hot gravy, other days it is day old, with dry edges. The mushroom burger is still famous, huge and consistently pretty darn good. Breakfasts are not fancy but, decent eggs, bacon, and pancakes. If you want to see a cafeteria from the 70's with 70's decor and a 70's menu, this is a nice memory. Big servings and low prices, it's an acceptable place to fill the void in my empty stomach. read more

A friend of mine wanted a ride to the King George Skytrain so I just drove down to the street to Fresgos tonight and holy crap if my insides didn't take a beating because of the Honey Garlic Ribs and Spaghetti meal I ordered. It - like everything else - was a HUGE portion. I eat alot, and had to bring some ribs home - or maybe it was just because the taste was - overall - just not very good. I just want it to be good, I want to give it a better score but after this visit I just can't. I can't be responsible for YOU walking into Fresgos, having a crappy meal, and blaming ME. This was the kind of place 20 years ago where geeks would gather to game, old people would go to gum their food, and the impoverished would Order Big for Days of Leftovers. My redneck-but-lovely American stepmom and my hick-but-lovely dad love this place in between bingo games and crib-matches. They're also both morbidly obese diabetics. So, as much as I love them, it tells you something about the cuisine. This is the kind of place that fits the bill at 3am, mostly because nothing else is open. Aside from that, it's another "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?" dining choice for most of us who come knowin' there's much better stuff out there. Also, the meatloaf/potatoes left me feeling like some 18-wheeler was driving through my stomach. Not only did it satisfy my craving for Black Forest cake (gained about 3 lbs) the food was good, and the portions are HUGE. Standing in line to order your meal, cafeteria style reminded me of high school 20 years ago. There was a sort of comfort opening the cooler full of jello, rice pudding or slices of pies and cakes While I could feel my arteries clogging up, this old school style cafeteria will now be on my top favourite dives for a home cooked style meal. The Special burger comes with 2 1/4lb patties on cheese with at least 2 slices of big thick cut bacon & a whole plate of fries, yes the burger comes with it's own dish because the piles of golden fries took up the real-estate on that plate and ain't going no where fast. Last time I came with friends I was dared to try their prime rib dinner. The slab was bigger/taller than my hand, clenched into fist, Thumb UP wards! taste was ok, not the greatest but for the price was not bad and the side dishes again were many dishes on the side And the options of desserts right there in the display case for you to choose from. The decor is more or less untouched since the early 80s and gives it that old time truck stop diner feel which is fine by me. There many TVs around and free WiFi. Me and the fiancé were craving breakfast. Steak and eggs to be exact. But it wasn't breakfast time, and the fiancé wanted a steak that was not a T-Bone (like Denny's). So I Googled a bit, and found the Fresgo Inn. Never been there, but what the heck, the picture of the steak and eggs on the Fresgo website looked tasty. So off we go. We actually drove past it because the store front wasn't exactly on King George. You drive into the parking lot (east), and the front of the restaurant is facing south. I don't know if that made sense, but what I'm trying to say is that it's easy to miss if you've never been there. The building definitely has seen some better days, and the furnishings as well, but whatever. Kinda dumpy, but the food makes up for it. Large portions, pretty decent food, and good prices. They cook out in the open, and don't good restaurants always have cook out in the open? Also super friendly staff! And breakfast (my favourite meal!!!) is available all day! Awesome! One thing to note: the toast that came with our breakfast was to die for. I had whole wheat, and the fiancé had raisin bread. I don't know what it is, but I swear it was the best whole wheat toast I had ever had in my whole life. My mouth is watering right now as I type this. We will definitely go back to Fresgo. read more

This is my review: I went there with my Dad + Paul for some tasty cheap food. WHen we walked in I thought I was walking in my kitchen but 10 years in my past yo! I've been coming to Fresgo for over 25 years now, and it hasn't changed too much over that time which I think is a good thing. It's hard to find consistency in restaurants these days, but Fresgo has always been good that way. Walter, the owner, still personally works there almost daily and is friendly and greets everyone who comes into his restaurant. Their portions are huge, especially things like the mushroom burger and prime rib dinner. Our favorite is actually one of their most recent additions - Pizza! One of the biggest complaints we've had with pizza is how salty it is - but what a nice surprise to discover that even their meat lovers (our favorite), is not salty at all - and appears to use a higher quality of ingredients that you'd normally find. The crust is thin and crisp, and the toppings are generous - they use some of their nice meatloaf as one of the toppings which is fantastic. Price is $12 for a medium sized pizza (only 1 size), and it's incredible value. Try their pizza if nothing else and you'll be a fan. No delivery, you have to call and pick up or eat in, but that's ok with me. The restaurant has an ecclectic ambience like a diner with red and green neon and big screen TV's all throughout - it's a great place to take friends and a big group. They make just about everything, including an in-house bakery that supplies all of their buns, bread, cakes, you name it. Dishes you have to try here - Burgers, Fish & Chips, Pizza - would be my top 3. But there are so many good ones it's hard to name them all - you will go back several times :) I'm not sure what some other reviewers were expecting, this is not a 5 star suit and tie establishment - but its a great casual dining place that you can take your friends and family and be guaranteed to leave completely stuffed! read more

I have been coming here for years and always look forward to coming back. It's what you expect from a cafeteria style restaurant . It's quick and reasonably priced for a large portion of food. I usually get the bacon double cheeseburger but I have tried most of the menu in my time. The turkey dinner is pretty large and pretty tasty so I would recommend it. The super sub is ridiculous. If you want a large sub that would give you a heart attack then get this. I have never finished one and always take home half a sub but that's ok. The desserts here are amazing ! The cheesecake is probably the best in town . They also have a bakery that sells a lot of baked goods. I would recommend it all to everyone. Ordered the lamb kabobs, it came with a Greek salad, and small container of Italian dressing on the side (seriously Italian dressing for a Greek salad) one small lamb kabob, which was tough, dry and tasteless. Plain basmati rice instead of rice pilaf (which was cold). Serve with a garlic sweet bread instead of pita bread. The supposed to be tzatziki sauce tasted like tartar sauce. WOULD NEVER GO BACK.
