Only reason I'm giving it three stars is the benefit of the doubt. I've eaten at the original Fresh Chef in Cornelius many times which is suppose to have essentially the same menu with excellent results. We ate here about three weeks ago and at least I was very disappointed. We have a history with Fresh Chef going back to when they first opened in Cornelius. Food was somewhat eclectic but innovative and generally very good. Was expecting the same here. My wife ordered a Black and Bleu wrap and loved it. I ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich and hated it. Chicken Salad with Cranberries is suppose to have a contrast in texture and taste and this had been left in the food processor to the point it was a amorphous mass with the consistency of mush and no defining character. Only reason I did not give a lower rating is because this is a new location and I've had similiar items at the mother store that were fantastic. Atmosphere is great. Somewhat bigger than Cornelius and they have spread out with good effect. No longer feel as cramped. Service is outstanding. When we walked in, it was the start of shift and they were having a shift meeting and everyone left enthusiastic and ready to work. Good sign of good management. Personally I'm going to consider there performance score as transient but based on finding, cannot rank higher. Will visit again in a couple of months and hopefully they will have resolved these issues. read more

I went to the Fresh Chef for the first time the other day. I was impressed with the menu selection and the cleanliness of the place. They have a pretty good selection of draft beer and wine. The owner or manager (not sure which) took our order. He was very social-able, but when it came down to the dividing our checks, he had no idea what anyone ordered and people ended up with random menu items on their checks even after we were all asked what we got. He sorted all this out eventually, but it took entirely too long to get our checks in the first place given that we had a small child with us. Overall, I really enjoyed the food, as did the other people I dined with. The Fresh Chef has a prime rib special on Sunday. I was impressed with the quality of the meat. This location really struggles on their take out. We ordered and came about fifteen minutes later when they said it would be ready. We sat in the parking lot for about twenty minutes. When they brought the order out, we were missing a side item. The waiter who brought it out argued and said the order was correct. They then sent a manager out who reviewed the ticket and realized in fact the order was incorrect. She came out and said the side item was in the box. I opened the box and it was not in there... Basically, don't order take out from this location. If you do, you should expect your order will likely be incorrect and they will make no effort to fix it. read more

Some things have changed, and not for the better. Ate there tonight, saw a service charge of ~ 3% added to my bill. I asked the server what this was and she said we just started this addition for anyone using a charge card. I was paying in cash to which she said we will remove it. Problem is, now you need to either ask for a new check or " in your mind" remove the charge prior to tipping against it and also remove the charge from the bill if leaving cash in an " all paid for cash out". Rubbish! Very cheesy and sneaky way of adding a charge. If your food costs are up, change the menu prices! Also this is the second time we added a take out and the " so called Fresh fries" were burnt to a crisp. We are locals and eat there 3-4 times per month. The only reason this very special spot doesn't get the FULL 5 stars from me is that I can't abide the music they play! Who wants to listen to tunes like Afternoon Delight and Muskrat Love? I'd rather drive the extra 10 minutes to the Fresh Chef in Cornelius than sit and have my ears assaulted. When I have mentioned this to servers they tell me they get lots of complaints but the management doesn't care, therefore to save the great waiters and waitresses from being fussed at for their honesty, I'm not going to mention any names. Now...to be completely fair, I love everything else about this place. The kale salad is always a must for me, although I like always ask for half te amount of dressing (at either location,) and the salmon, crabcakes and black and blue steak salad are my three favorite entrées. They occasionally have a chicken and artichoke soup that is absolutely amazing. The bottom line is, I don't think I'll go back inside the Mooresville location again, I'll just take out (sorry to the waitstaff who will not be getting those tips,) or as mentioned above, I'll simply drive up the road a few miles and get the same great, fresh food and attentive waitstaff without the outdated 70's soft rock. read more

The restaurant is very clean and simple but the service and food are exceptional. Their menu has a nice variety from salads, wraps, burgers, pasta and steaks! Reasonably priced with lunch and dinner options. The friendly attentive service is always reFRESHing. Along with our thorough server a gentleman walked around assuring everything was comfortable for all of the guest. I chose the Cajun Pasta w/ blackened chicken which was remarkable! I don't usually go for chicken at restaurants because it's generally dry, but not this one it was very flavorful. We also orders the FRESH Atlantic Salmon with cilantro rice and FRESH pico de gallo, perfectly cooked! We actually found ourselves staring at each other like "this was very good"! To end our lunch that same attentive gentlemen making rounds around the restaurant offered dessert, but being that it was my birthday I had a cake at home waiting for me so he generously offered a complimentary dessert "TO GO" That's the kind of things that make a restaurant great! I wanted to try something new and local. A delightful place with a friendly atmosphere. Lots of different waiters helped keep our drinks full and our table clear. I ordered the prime rib (Sunday exclusive) medium rare and it was delightful. Veggie of the day was spaghetti squash which was excellently done. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp and grits and liked it, but wasn't a big fan of it having corn in it (he's weird about corn though, take it for what it is). The to go containers are... Different. Required a bit more assembly than I'm used to and no separation for different parts of the meal but that's not worth knocking a star off for. Definitely recommend! I had the chicken marsala, it was sub par! For a restaurant named "Fresh Chef" I expected my food to taste like it had been 100% freshly prepared. The marsala sauce was translucent (unlike ANY I ever had in my life) and it tasted like it came out of a jar. I could not taste the Marsala wine at all. Even the bread was bland. The only thing good about it was the chicken breast was cooked perfectly, too bad the main ingredients were lame. I will NOT be going back here again and this was a do over from the blackened chicken dish I ordered a few months ago! It had absolutely no flavor (blackened, really??) and the chicken was tough and rubbery. They gave me a complimentary meal as a faith of good gesture but once again I was very disappointed. Fresh Chef does not live up to their name, I guess I was holding them to a better standard. I tried twice and that will be it. ***Update*** (2-22-17): Just when we shared our favorite affordable healthy dinner option with the world, the affordability goes away! Apparently this tip triggered a realization from the ownership that these items in combination were being under-charged. This in spite of the fact we were encouraged to order our meal this way by a server, and had been doing so on a weekly basis for over a year. Disappointing to say the least. The food is still delicious but the value is significantly diminished. Unfortunately for us and Fresh Chef, the 17% price hike on this meal mean's I'll be making this at home from now on. Thankfully, the recipe is easy to replicate. I'm also dropping my 5 star rating to 4. The food is still 5 stars, but the value is no longer anything special. The abrupt change in pricing without any form of update to the menu online or printed, or grace period to customers who order with specific budgetary expectations only to be surprised by the unannounced hike is especially discouraging. *** NO LONGER APPLIES*** Order a Side Kale salad then add Salmon to save 4 bucks over ordering the full size salad with salmon. Visited today and had a great experience. This location has complimentary valet parking. Nice touch! The interior is nice, but seating is a bit cramped. The soup of the day was clam chowder. It was creamy, seasoned perfectly and so fresh. The best I've ever had. The black and blue steak salad was great, too. The beef was tender and peppery, and cooked well. Greens were fresh and the dressing was homemade. There was a bit too much blue cheese on it for me. The Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich is a grilled chicken sandwich topped with grilled pineapple and provolone cheese. For me, it was too sweet, but my daughter liked it. The fries that come with it are thin and crispy. Great experience, we'll be back. read more

I had been interested in this place for a while but driving by I had no idea of what kind of place it was. So eventually, intrigued, I looked it up on yelp and was impressed that there was free valet parking. A farm to table strategy and what sounded like s fantastic beet salad. Last night there were very long waits at lots of nearby restaurants so upon remembering this place I gave them a call and they could accommodate us. Great news, I thought a prologue to a story with a happy ending. Sadly not. We got there five minutes before our reservation and was told there would be a forty minute wait. When I pointed out that half an hour ago I was promised a table in five minutes the rude hostess retorted she can't help it when people come and go. A server overheard and told her that a specific table was actually available and so were led to a horrible but available table. After sitting there I looked and saw that there actually were five open tables and were reseated. That and the poor parking situation )the valet parking sign and service were gone) were the worst part of the night so it could have been worse. They pride themselves on farm to table fresh good food which clashes with a menu filled with French fries as the featured side dish and many meals buried with overpowering sauces. The waiter was good, the bartender was great snd even came to the table to see if I liked my cocktail (I did!). A guy who I presume was the manager approached our table with a big smile and asked how everything was. He left without waiting for an answer so I hope he reads this review. This is s good restaurant all in all which could be s bit better with more attention to detail and execution. read more

For some reason my mom and I kept thinking this was one of those healthy meal take a way places but instead it was an absolutely delicious sit down meal! And everyone on the staff was wonderful from our sever Liz, the manager Matt and the bartender Seth. The fries are some of the best ever and the menu was so extensive we can't wait to try the rest! We ordered mushroom & artichoke soup, fries, chicken piccata & chicken Cesar and enjoyed every bit! Then for dessert the cheesecake and brownie were so good! And the prices for all this freshly prepared food were so good as well. Mondays are $6 martinis, tuesdays half price bottles of wine and rest of days the specials can be seen above the bar. The booth comfortably seated 4 not 6. The hostess said we could talk to the manager. The manager totally dismissed us and walked back to the kitchen. What a disappointment. I stopped by to pick up the Chix Tortia soup today. It was raining hard and 57 degrees, so soup was a good choice. The choices were Chix Cannellini and Chix Tortia. I ordered the Chix Tortilla Soup. They may have pureed the cannellini beans and placed the Chix pieces in the soup with the tortilla chips on top for decoration. Boy, was I mistaken? The soup was horrible. Chix meant chicken, but it could have meant chickpeas. That could be what caused the grainy texture of the soup. There was no flavor to the soup or chicken. I doubt if I will return for their soups. If it were me, I would have thrown that soup out before serving it to anyone. I'd like to receive my six dollars. It wasn't worth the cost. read more

Woah... 1) they handed us dinner menus and we had to specifically ask for lunch menus. 2) The burger is $2 cheaper on the lunch menu than on the dinner menu. 3) the service at lunch was terrrrrible! Met the owner while out on Lake Norman yesterday and he was kind enough to hook up plenty of free apps for all 23 members of my family reunion party the next day. It was beyond nice of him. There are only a few times in life when food is a dining ovation, this is it! Upon arriving for lunch we were greeted with the utmost of southern charm and seated quickly. The ordering process was smooth and swift with great server recommendations. We started out with guacamole and spinach artichoke dips ..simply perfect! The shrimp and grits are to die for. My boyfriend had garlic shrimp and cilantro rice ,, superb. The ingredients are fresh and local when available. This is obvious in one forkful. The day aft list is impressive. The homemade Real fruit juice Patron Margarita is succulent and delish! The filet melts in your mouth, and the kale salad is prepared perfectly with a little zest.
