If you're looking for a view with a side of "decent," Toucan's hits the spot. Located right on Lake Norman, the scenery is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here--it's the kind of place where the sunset almost makes you forget you're reading a menu the size of a phone book. The inside was decorated in a fun lake theme! Red flag alert: the menu is massive. I'm a firm believer that no kitchen can master everything from A to Z, and Toucan's kind of proves the point. It was "just okay," maybe as much as good but not quite GREAT but the Shrimp Platter actually held its own! The shrimp were huge, well-seasoned, and the rice and beans were a surprising highlight. The real MVP of the night, though, was our waitress. Managing a party of 15 is usually a recipe for disaster, but she was a total pro. Every order was correct, the food arrived hot, and our drinks never hit empty. Go for the lake vibes and the stellar service, stay for the shrimp, but maybe keep your expectations for the rest of that giant menu in check. A solid choice for a big group outing! Came here for lunch and the atmosphere was definitely the highlight. The outdoor patio is dog friendly with a really pretty waterfront view and colorful umbrellas that give it a fun vacation vibe. The cocktails looked refreshing, but overall were just okay taste-wise. Food was decent, nothing bad but nothing that really stood out either. Service was unfortunately the biggest downside. We waited quite a while for someone to greet us outside, even though there were only a couple other tables. I finally went inside to find a server and noticed the staff all gathered together while there weren't any tables inside. First time at Toucan's with mixed results. We tried a variety of starters. Calamari was not very good. While cooked well, they were very bland. Definitely could have used salt and pepper. The fried pickles were very good. Good size portion and tasty. The potato skins were also very good. The empanadas were very good and the side sauce while spicy was delicious. Great spot on Lake Norman! It was our first dinning experience here. We were happy they had clam chowder soup on a cool Memorial Day. The soup just hit the spot Service was great and attentive. For my main I got the crab topped mahi-mahi...it was crab cake on top of the mahi mahi. The fish was okay I know my expectations are high since I lived in Florida for over a decade. The plantains were very yummy. My mom had the lobster roll which was good and filling. And my dad liked his Caribbean bowl. Oh and try to sub out your rice and beans. Drinks to start Rum runner , tropical sunrise margarita , coco pour mango all good tasting drinks not bad on the alcohol. Appetizer, we had the Calamari, very good fried yes but it was lightly battered so not terrible, good dipping sauce would be nice if the portion was a bit bigger. Main dishes Garlic shrimp pasta, wow this was delicious, great tasting sauce good amount of shrimp & pasta. The Orange shrimp oriental salad, was very tasty, nice size salad, good tasting shrimp. Let's talk about Lake Norman. It was my birthday. We decided to stop in at this spot with a wonderful lake view nestled in a cove. Lauren, our server was great, she made recommendations and checked on us several times during our visit. We had the Cucumber Mojito and jalapeño margaritas to start. We followed it up with Grouper Bites(FANTASTIC) and Empanadas. The Empanadas were booming with flavor and were very authentic. I had the Coconut Shrimp Entree and she had the Grouper Sandwich(Grilled). The Grouper sandwich was perfectly seasoned and the Coconut shrimp was crispy and juicy. Rachel was a great server--friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The restaurant itself has a cool tropical, beachy vibe with tiki décor and a spacious layout. The bar in the middle is a nice centerpiece, and the lake view is beautiful, especially during sunset. I even caught a great picture of the sunset during dinner on 7/31/25. For drinks, I had: * Jalapeño Margarita on the Rocks - spicy but smooth, with a sugar rim to balance the kick. It definitely gave me a nice buzz after just one glass. * Frozen Sunset Margarita - sweet and refreshing, but a little lighter on the alcohol. For food, I kept it simple and ordered two entrees: * Island Burger - This was highly recommended and did not disappoint. The rum glaze and onion ring made it unique and flavorful. * Buffalo Chicken Sandwich - Juicy and delicious. Came with crispy fries on the side, just like the burger. Both the burger and chicken sandwich were big and definitely filling, making it well worth the price. The prices are reasonable and don't break the bank, which is a plus for a lakeside restaurant with this kind of atmosphere and quality. Overall, I'll absolutely be back to try more food and drinks. came down on sunday morning thinking I was somewhere else and feeling every word the man in black let go except I didn't ever get the night of inspiration preceding, just the sorrowful feeling of seeing an adult slushie where I wanted a daiquiri on the rocks -- and it was pink to boot. probably should have asked before because Mike said he could have shakered it which begs the question of why that isn't the default mode..? but maybe it's just me waiting on a blackened caesar shrimp wrap with seasonal fries which was actually pretty good for a hodge-podge of adjectives and culinary gimmicks. so it took a little while for my victuals to come out... there's several TVs above the bar but nothing really worth watching because it's mostly sports ball and other sport balls with occasional interruptions for simulated faux socio-political outrage and my head should be pounding out of frustration but isn't yet so how about a mai tai in the interim... but it's almost the Ides of Augustus and the shrimps need a knife in the back to be historically accurate... and if we're aiming for tiki then trading crab rangoon for fries - even really good fries - would be a nice touch. parking is completely ridiculous; angle parking on the side of a hill with a non-zero chance of ending up in the water. patio seating with a good view of the lake or inside with similar views and protection from the weather. island bar without much real island feel but then you remember this isn't really a real lake either read more

Stopped here on my annual multi summer food road trip. The view was nice. Inside felt a little chainy but no big deal. Server was very polite also. Ordered the mahi mahi with a crab cake that came with creamy slaw, yellow rice, and beans. Also got an order of the fried gator bites. I enjoyed the crab cake. The mahi was a minute or two over but seasoned nicely. The gator bites were cooked perfectly. My issue with both meals was that they were both screaming for a sauce of some kind. Crab cake came with nothing as a roulade would be great. Gator bites had basic cocktail sauce but there could have been something creative to accompany it to not taste like deep fried seafood. read more

Beautiful location with a great view of the lake! The hostess was rough but our waitress was great! The food was mediocre. Grouper bites were the best thing we had and the tartar was fantastic! I had the scallop salad which left a lot to be desired. So many iceberg cores that I had to pick out. The dressing was good though. Other dishes we had were fried scallops with way too much breading, a very bland cheeseburger, a messy but decent mahi mahi sandwich and steamed clams. They have plenty of space inside and outside is decent too. The service was okay. Not the best. It's like they are in a rush. The food was decent. The shrimp fajitas look good but I didn't order it. I ate the salmon and shrimp, shrimp was good but salmon was overcooked and dried- they didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked and the veggies on the side was bland too. We had dinner at this restaurant with family members over Labor Day weekend. My parents talked this place up and said it was some of the best fish they had ever had. They don't eat much fish so I was having my doubts. It had its good and bad parts. I'm going to go from start to finish in chronological order. Parking is TERRIBLE. The lot is made on the side of a hill so everything is slanted and VERY tight. There aren't enough spots for the traffic. Interior decor and ambiance were good. Place feels open and airy with lots of space for everyone. There are GREAT views of Lake Norman from a nice back deck and nice big windows for people eating indoors. There is also a boat dock to drive your boat up and eat at this place while out on the water. We went and spent some time on the lake side hill after dinner and it was beautiful. Perhaps the best part of the meal honestly. Servers/staff attire is much like you would expect a more laid back restaurant on the lake... Pink t-shirts black shorts and black sneakers. Overall I felt like they did a good job other than drinks needing refills. Food was accurate and when we needed something we didn't have to wait long times. Food was VERY BLAND and honestly tasted frozen. We skipped appetizers. My wife and I ordered mahi mahi - mine with Caribbean Jerk seasoning, hers topped with a crab cake. My son ending up eating most of both of our dishes lol. Hes nit picky about fish lol. Other people at our table ordered fried seafood and I thought it was better than mine. Honestly the only good thing I ate that night was the choc chip cookie dessert. Prices were very affordable... but I thought our dishes were not worth the $25 price. We've made better seafood at home for much less. Overall I liked the restaurant and would go back. There aren't too many places with this great view so that in itself has its value. But I do hope they can work on their food recipes and get more flavor in their dishes. Love love love this place. While visiting North Carolina my sister-in-law brought us here. Loved Toucan time! We chose to sit outside because inside had a lot of flys near the windows. Michael S was our server. What a great young man that is definitely in a job that he loves. My husband had a steak ranch salad that he said was good, but would probably try something different if we came back again. I ordered calamari along with the Fish your way grilled Grouper, coleslaw, and plantains. My brother-in-law ordered the grouper bites and my sister-in-law ordered the lobster wrap. I was allowed to taste the grouper bites and I loved them! I enjoyed the food, the view, and the service. My favorite part was the music . Visited here on a Friday night. Just a warning parking can be difficult because the lot is small and two restaurants share it. Very popular place. You go up to the hostess by the surfboard to get your name on the list. The place is very popular, and we were seated in a reasonable time. They have ample outdoor seating. The drink I ordered wasn't super strong but ok. Service was spotty as our server was overwhelmed. The food was good and the restaurant was accommodating. UPDATE: I am removing a star for a significant misnomer. I returned on a sunny Sunday to eat with friends from college and ordered the Lobster Salad. Toucan's actually served 4 New Englanders "lobster". That was NOT lobster and needs to be renamed. It was shredded fake seafood without a hint of lobster flavor. Trust me, we know what lobster tastes like. Outside of that everything was per usual. Great weather, great service and the rest was a great meal. UPDATED this - It has taken me 17 years of living here in NC to find a fun restaurant near water within driving distance that is under 2 hours. Here it is, with a great view of the lake and the ugly power smoke stack. Lol. If you squint you can work it only to see the water. Service was quick and efficient. The bonus was the fried fish platter we got was very very good. There is no question, we will be back. We love a good Sunday drive. read more

This was our first visit. Our waitress was very nice, but the food was mediocre. We ordered stuffed mushrooms. They came out cold with coagulated cheese. We sent it back, and heard the manager said they were not good. My husband ordered fish and chips. The fish was swimming in grease. The person delivering the food said, "you should have another piece coming, maybe not." $20 for 2 thick battered, greasy fish. The ahi tuna salad was good, but the ahi tuna was a bit tough to cut through. Surrprisingly enough, the manager didn't even come out to apologize. We won't be returning. read more

Came for a late lunch and really enjoyed ourselves. All of the staff were genuinely welcoming and friendly. Waitress was just plain awesome. Had the crab cake sandwich. While it wouldn't win any awards in the Chesapeake Bay Area, it was huge and tasty. Definitely got my moneys worth and would recommend. Had the side of mixed veggies which was just all right.
