Maybe DONT be on the phone while the only two customers are in-store and need help? It's extremely unprofessional. If you are gonna be on the phone at least have the ability to multitask; it would've took two seconds to just grab the item I needed instead of rudely turning your back and then pointing towards the register for me to go flag down another (busy) associate. Came in today 6/29/23 with my aunt. We needed beef chunks and ox tail. Upon walking in it was a cold feel. There was an older woman behind the counter which I believe said hello, but nothing else. No "how may I help you," etc. We walked around to the meat counter, asked the man (older man) if he had oxtail he said only on the weekends. We were conversing in Spanish, and well got an eye like it was a crime I looked around a bit and then ordered 2lbs of beef chunks and two pieces of meat that looked similar to a a small sirloin. My total came out to $79!!!' I could not believe what I was hearing! If he didn't already pack it I would have left it. Customer service was very bad. I will not be back. read more

I was so bummed as I was shopping she came to me and gave me sourdough rolls which were AMAZING!! The owners are so nice and they have the best biltong that is always sliced perfectly. Went into the shop twice back in June and they were not wearing masks when most of the other establishment were so I left. Came back to town in September and everyone was wearing masks accept for them. It was hanging off there ear as they attempted to clean a bloody cutting board with a rag and some water The tuna look great but I couldn't buy it. read more

Plenty of organic and grass-fed options in the meat case. Fresh baked breads are quite good. And they have some interesting South African items too. The last time I was in they had wine for sale. They pack a lot of very good stuff in a rather small spot. It beats driving to Native Sun. The owners are friendly and helpful. read more

We shop at this local butcher shop & market frequently! It is locally owned and the owners are very friendly! They have beautiful meat, chicken, and seafood in the case as well as some prepared foods! There is a large assortment of handmade sausages including Boerewors, a type of sausage from South Africa. They carry many South African products such as their own house made South African Beef Jerky! They have a nice selection of imported cheeses and wines, some fresh baked breads, and produce. Well was really excited to try this place as I had never had South African food before. The first red flag was that we didn't even get a "hello" when we walked in even though there wasn't any other customers. After I had found an item I wanted to purchase my mother had asked if they had any fresh meat pies, to which the woman looked at us like we had three heads. She was very rude and told us that this isn't a restaurant it's a market. Well I told her have a good day and left. I'd never shop here and recommend if you want a meat pie try Kookaburras where they actually know how to treat customers. I downloaded Yelp just cause I was so upset!!! read more

Cannot say enough good things about this small market. We've shopped here every time we come to St. Augustine, 3-4 times a year, and never been disappointed. The butcher section is fabulous; the selection of chutneys, datil jams and other condiments small but carefully curated. But what really stands out are the homemade items - make sure you try their sourdough loaves!! Cheeses again carefully chosen; they could have talked me into purchasing a much more expensive cheese than I wound up buying, but the woman was honest and forthright. Their to-go foods are always great, too. Make sure to try the lemon hummus. The salmon "dip" is much more like a smoked salmon spread, perfect on a piece of good crusty bread with a little lemon and pepper. I have no idea why one reviewer said the owner and staff are rude. I have never, ever, found them anything but friendly and helpful. I wish we had a clone of this place where we live. As it is, I'm giving up on most of the local restaurants and sticking with food from these folks. I may even buy some steak to take home!!! read more

I've been coming to the Fresh Island Market for the last 3 years, everytime I chance to make it into town. The selection is amazing, all the wonderful South African products makes for a fun experience plus the biltong is to die for. But the achilles heel is the service. Everytime I've been in I feel like I'm inconveniencing the employees. I get it, I'm not a local and they dont know me. But I've gotten friendlier service at the local Walmart than here. Which is a shame, I really do like this place. But I just dont think it'll be on my list the next time I'm in town. read more

This is a very small local market that sells local fruit and vegetables, eggs, bacon, fish, free range chickens and grass fed beef. They sell other things as well, but the beef is why we visited and why we'll keep coming back. Their grain-fed, locally sourced, VERY FRESH beef was a couple grades above the supermarket beef. We've tried the ribeyes a couple of times and have been very happy each time with the quality. It is tender and flavorful. They also have NY strip and filets which will be our next tries. They sell take-out lunch items, specialty cheeses, drinks soups/stews and other items. This place is definitely worth the visit though it can be a bit tough to find the entrance. You have to pull in north of the building (next to the Nissan dealership) and park around back. read more

Excellent steaks! The owner assured us our grass fed sirloin and rib eyes would not shrink and he was spot on! Probably one of the best steaks we have had! The prices are very comparable to the bigger super stores but much better quality. My friend purchased the sausage and said it was really good. Although her husband wasn't happy on the expense of the sausage until he ate one. I can't wait to try the grass fed burgers tonight! Fabulous small market for picking up grass-fed meats and scrumptious prepared foods. A variety of inventive sandwiches on homemade breads, and a terrific seared tuna salad with wasabi dressing. A couple of specials every day as well. One of the owners is from South Africa and they carry some excellent and reasonably priced South African wine. A couple of small tables so two people could eat there. Otherwise, a great choice for take out lunch or dinner. I only wish we had discovered it sooner. read more

Firstly they have a wonderful selection...though I CHOSE the delicious S. African sausage called Boerewors. We had it for dinner last night and rated it THE BEST sausage we have had in USA ... (we are both sausage lovers). Being from S.A. I was thrilled to find that the texture was excellent, as well as the seasoning. The customers were wearing masks and the employees said they didn't have too if they maintained distance. YET, they were taking care of customers within 4 feet. It was horrifying once we realized what had happened. All customers had a mask, all employees didn't. On top of that after I made it clear that we had just realized this situation. A women , who was either an employee or an owner told us to leave. We had just spend a pretty penny at their establishment. She implied that not wearing a mask was ok via ordinance because of the distance. Neither of the counter staff were over 6 feet away since it's a meat market counter. In fact we felt unwelcome for even bringing up the subject and another customer was horrified once he realized it too. In short four customers enter their establishment all wearing masks, three owner/employs were not wearing masks.It's just that simple, they don't care about their customers. So just to be sure I called the establishment upon returning home and this is what they said. I said, what are your Covid-19 polities. They said, customer wear a mask when they enter. I said, "what about employees?" And the answer was "we do too." That is NOT what happened when we visited. Seriously, they could have just said, "whoops, we forgot." We all forget! Instead, the women got really nasty with just after I pointed out clearly that we were all wearing masks and they weren't . Come on. Be truthful ! read more

As former Mid-westerners, we love all of the great seafood options in FL, but we had not found a consistently good source of grass fed beef. Then Fresh Market Island moved to Anastasia Island. Their grass fed beef is excellent, and all of the steaks we have purchased there have been fine restaurant quality or better. The burgers and chicken are also excellent, and the selection of cheeses is inspiring. My husband loves their chowder, and the beef jerky is amazing. What a jewel this market is! read more

I wish they would place "packed on" or "use by" dates on their refrigerated & frozen products. I would be more inclined to frequent this store if they informed the consumers about expiration dates.
