I came pretty early so there weren't many customers but the ambiance is perfect for studying. They have plenty of chairs. They have a lot of choices for drinks and snacks. I got the Vietnamese Coffee and the spam musubi. Their coffee is pretty good. I would totally come back to try the pandan coffee next time! The owner was super kind and gave me a tea and an egg tart on the house. The service was also really quick and I was in and out in under 10 minutes. They have options for Zelle and Venmo if necessary! The parking is a little confusing but there is street parking in front of the store and I believe parking in the back? Was looking forward to a nice pandan iced coffee, was really disappointed this time. There wasn't much pandan flavor unfortunately compared to previous visits. The pandan coffee is $5.50, after tax $6, I was going to charge it but the girl says there's a $0.50 additional fee, that's nearly 10%! This is difficult to write because I've been a regular customer here for years and genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere and service in the past. Unfortunately, during my visit this morning, I discovered a cockroach in my vietnamese coffee after I had already consumed around 25% of the drink. While I recognize that sometimes accidents happen even in the best establishments, this is a serious oversight in basic health standards. I got the coffee for the ride home, so I was already home when I noticed the cockroach and was unable to bring it to the owner's attention. I went around 8:15 am on a Wednesday and it was still slow because it just opened. There was plenty of parking on the street in front of the store. The cashier was friendly throughout our interaction. For payment, there is a minimum amount for credit card. You also have the option to Venmo or Zelle. While I ordered and paid for an egg coffee, I basically got a Vietnamese coffee with a teaspoon of egg. Since they just opened, I'm not sure if they didn't have enough egg yet. At the very least, the flavor was strong and more on the bitter side. I also got my order within a minute. Overall, I would be careful if you decide to go for the egg coffee and double check the order. I am disappointed that I paid the price of an egg coffee for a Vietnamese coffee. A good spot for Vietnamese coffee in the SGV, my go-to is their egg coffee, iced Vietnamese coffee, coffee lover, and ube coconut coffee (ube taste is a bit unnoticeable, yet you can taste the real ube inside). I also loved that they sell house-baked pastries, croissant sandwiches, spam musubi, and mochi egg waffles (yum!) Not to mention, Jimmy the owner, who is informative and friendly. He is always happy to customize your coffee, and I honestly enjoyed that. Downside? Well, it would be the cleanliness ...some might feel a bit uncomfortable dining in. We were in the area and decided to stop by Fresh Roast for some coffee. Please note that parking can be difficult to find. There is limited street parking, and the parking lot is small. I opted for an iced pandan latte, and it was okay but definitely too sweet for me. The pandan latte was also light on the coffee flavor. The owner recommended us to try their Happy Face Waffle, which was a new item. The Happy Face Waffle is an egg-shaped waffle, and you could choose the filling. Some options were chocolate, red bean, char siu, pork belly, mochi, etc. We opted for red bean, char siu, and pork belly. The Happy Face Waffle bites were awful. The red bean filling tasted rancid and definitely wasn't fresh. The pork belly filling consisted mostly of onion, which was misleading. The char siu flavor wasn't great either. I got the durian coffee which was a mistake because the durian wasn't well blended in. It was clumpy in really strong coffee. Next time I go, I would probably get their pandan coffee instead. My God I have never been into a more disgusting coffee shop. Everything was dusty, dirty, and cluttered with random stuff old rusted machines. The refrigerators with snacks and fruit were rusty and not clean at all. All the counter tops looked like filthy. I went ahead and ordered it anyway because I was trying not to judge a book by its cover. I ordered an iced latte with pandan. He pulled out a dark concentrated gallon of coffee, poured it into some milk. The milk was chunky and coagulated. Working in the kitchen, I understand that sometimes heavy cream can get thick or chunky when not mixed well at the top. I gave it the benefit of the doubt again! I was in the search for good Hong Kong milk tea and bubble waffles and I came across this place. At first glance, I thought I walked into someone's house. It was a bit dark and looked like someone forgot to pay the electric bill or trying to save electricity. Jokes aside, I did not mind the interesting set up. They sell all kinds of interesting teas and coffee. Their menu is displayed on a TV screen. Their cafe is kinda like a museum. They also sell some of the stuff they have on their shelves. Interesting enough, they rent out their equipment like the bubble waffle pan. So now is where the fun ends. For one, the Hong Kong milk tea was god awful. It tasted medicinal. They put sugar and milk in bo lay tea which should never happen. No amount of sugar is going to fix that one. And they wanted $5 for this? Never again. Just grab a Lipton or Tetley, add some sugar and milk or condensed milk and you're set. Why is it so hard? It seems like it's a trend in LA to serve milk tea using strong herbal tea. Nasty! The worst part of this entire place are their bubble waffles. It was rock hard. I can't even press on it. Bubble waffles are supposed to be crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. And they charged almost $8 for it. They also sell this batter. It was the worst bubble waffle ever. Not to mention I waited close to 20 minutes for all of this. Fresh Roast is the closest place to me that serves DURIAN Coffee, and love it! Durian and coffee work really well together. The bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the durian meshed really well together. It was really flavorful. As something extra, Fresh Roast adds chunks of durian to it. They give you a boba straw, but I like to ask for a skinny straw, so I can enjoy the coffee first and then suck up the durian chucks after. They have other durian treats as well. I had their durian soft tofu/tofu pudding/ tofu fa before, and it was good! It was pretty unique to me because I don't see it offered anywhere else. The tofu was super comforting, and adding chunks of durian in there was just the cherry on top. I recommend ordering it if they still have it on their menu. The Ube coffee was also good, I would give it a 3/5, there was just too much Ube chunks, I was not really trying to eat my drink. What a great find. A gem in the haystack. A mom-pop coffee shop on the streets of San Gabriel Blvd. There's limited parking in the back. The owner is friendly and he took my order, told me it would be about a 10-15 min wait while they made my order, and rung me up. 1. Pandan Coffee (5/5) I love that they use quality coffee and that they do not add additional sugar. It's strong in coffee flavor, but the pandan juice and coconut milk added subtle sweetness and fragrant flavor. I'd drink this everyday if I could. 2. Hanoi Insanity Coffee (5/5) It's essentially egg cream foam on top of coffee, which sounds gross, but surprisingly very good. The egg foam has a bit of sweetness and savoriness to it that adds a nice creamy balance to the strong coffee. It's hard to describe, but I do recommend it. YOLO, so try something out of the world. 3. Pandan Egg Waffle (4-4.5/5) I personally liked the strong pandan flavor of the waffle. Like most other people, I was drawn to Fresh Roast for their pandan coconut coffee & hong kong egg waffles! This is your local no-frills cafe run by an older Asian man. Service was quick and to the point, but not rude by any means. I visited on a Friday morning, and it wasn't too busy. Several tables were occupied by customers enjoying their morning coffee and getting some work or studying in. This is a decently sized cafe so there are plenty of tables. The wifi limit sign now says 2 hours (previously the limit was 1 hr). PANDAN COCONUT COFFEE This was my first time trying this combo in coffee, but I love all 3 flavors individually. The flavor profile was very unique, with a super prominent coconut and pandan flavor and a hint of sweetness. The coffee was very strong though, with a slightly burnt bitter aftertaste. This is coming from someone who enjoys sweet & creamy lattes though, so the coffee flavor may be fine for you. I wasn't completely in love with the drink, but it wasn't bad either. HONG KONG EGG WAFFLE This is made fresh on order (as it should be), so it's served piping hot and streamy! I just ordered a plain original waffle with no filling or flavor. Texture wise, it was perfect -- the shell was crispy and golden, and the inside was a bouncy dough. Flavor wise, it was pretty good. I cant pinpoint what it's lacking, but I've had better. I have been here a couple of times now, and I have always had a great experience here. The shop has a different vibe and aesthetic going versus what you would typically see nowadays, but it almost feels like I'm walking into the owner's home. Don't be intimidated by the owner, though; he is really nice and straightforward. He also usually hands you the check for the drinks after everything is made, which is different than the typical coffee/ drink shop where you pay first. Hong Kong milk tea - decently strong milk tea, made well like the Hong Kong cafes around the area. 7.5/10 Portugese egg tart flavored egg waffle - Crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy with an additional egg custard that really enhances the typical egg waffle flavor. We threw away the food and drink we had, informed the owner, and walked out. They really need to hire a professional pest control to clean up this place. Fresh Roast has an unassuming exterior with a cool interior. There's outdoor seating available and the indoor seating looks like a library/hip Asian café. We got pandan coconut latte and the egg coffees. The pandan coconut latte tastes just like the pandan coconut coffee jello cakes that Vietnamese people eat. I liked that it wasn't too sweet, and it was quite light. I honestly liked this drink more than the egg coffee. The egg coffees were very potent. Unlike other egg coffees I've had, the egg here seems to be purely egg and maybe something salty, but no sweetness was added. Generally I'd lick the egg foam but there's no use doing that here since there was no flavor besides eggy-ness. I mixed it up in the coffee to make the drink more creamy, then waited a while for the ice to melt before drinking. Don't expect the best service here. When I arrived in the afternoon, there was one other customer enjoying their order. The first thing I noticed was obviously the unique interior. It definitely has a homely aesthetic. One might say a bit dingy as well. The decor is eclectic with mismatched tables, chairs, and other furnishings. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Because it was hot out, we sat at a table inside near the entrance. It was nice and cool with a box fan in the corner that helped with circulation while the air conditioner blasted cold air overhead. Depending on the time of day and the number of customers present, the ambiance can range from being quiet with the perfect vibe for reading or studying to having a lively atmosphere with many patrons chatting and enjoying their food and drinks. [ Food ] Because I've never been to French Roast before, I spent a few minutes looking over the menu. There are tons of unique combinations and food/drink options available. In my opinion, the drinks have reasonable, affordable prices. I haven't drank coffee in over a decade, so I opted to keep it simple. I ordered: * Strawberry lemonade ($5.50) This pink drink came in a pretty large plastic cup with some chunks of strawberry floating at the top and some sitting at the bottom. After a few sips, I could tell it was refreshing but a bit too tart for my liking. Jimmy, the owner, was accommodating and was nice enough to add more of the sweetener/syrup. The modified drink was much sweeter with a stronger strawberry flavor and more to my taste. Judging from the other Yelp reviews, I'm guessing the egg waffles are quite popular. Since they take up a decent amount of menu real estate, they're probably the star of the show at this cafe. If I come back for dessert, I'll definitely have to order one. [ Service ] I ordered at the counter with two other acquaintances. One person and I received our orders immediately. A few minutes after we sat back down at our table, one of the employees brought the last person their drink. So from my experience, the service is pretty quick here. [ Tips ] There is a small parking lot in the alley behind the cafe. The entrance is located off East Broadway. Note that the two spots to the left belong to another business while the other six spots are reserved for Fresh Roast customers. The signs state that the Fresh Roast parking spots have a 2-hour limit. If you end up parking in the lot, you might see a sign on the back door telling you to still enter through the front entrance. Otherwise, there is street parking on San Gabriel Boulevard and East Broadway. A sign next to the front door states that credit cards are allowed for orders $15 or more. Otherwise, they take Venmo or Zelle (and obviously cash). The cafe operates interestingly. One of my acquaintances is a frequent customer and informed me that you order at the counter first. Then they either hand the order to you right then and there or they bring it over to your table after it's ready. And you finally pay at the register after you're all finished and ready to leave. However, I believe that may only be the case for smaller parties. When I went up to the counter with two acquaintances, we ordered and then immediately paid at the register. I like this place a lot for their Hong Kong egg waffles and good service as they were friendly and quality was fresh. I really enjoyed munching on their specialty Mochi waffle and that they were quick in serving us. The ambiance was very chill and they were attentive to our needs. One of the more unique places I've been to. Fresh Roast feels like something from Hogwarts/Diagon Alley. Cozy, whimsical, always something to catch your eye, a little random with its layout. There's ample seating inside, including some sofa chairs to kick back and lounge. There's a ton of unique options here including Durian Coffee and an assortment of food/confectionaries. I'd ordered the Iced Spanish Coffee and something called a Hanoi Insanity Coffee which has "golden egg" inside of it. The Hanoi Coffee was pretty tasty, very creamy, comforting, and slightly sweet. I almost regretted ordering this since I thought there'd be overwhelming nodes of egg, but they did a great job of masking it. Spanish coffee is usually my go to if it's on a menu, so had to grab this as well. It was very delicious, rich, and a good balance of savory/sweet. Definitely one of my all time favorites. Service was friendly, and drinks came out in just a few minutes. The wifi here has a 1 hour limit for some reason and upon payment I was tasked to pay via Venmo. Stumbled upon this local cafe and it's such a hidden gem! They have indoor and outdoor seating. They have such unique coffee flavors. We ordered the pandan coffee drink and it was so good! I noticed that they had a sign that you can rent their egg waffle machine and it comes with the batter! So, I decided to try their mochi pandan egg waffle and omg it was so good I wanted to come back to get more! It was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. The owner was so nice and friendly! He offered us tofu flower (douhua) to try because he bc was just making it. Highly recommend checking this spot out and support local businesses! read more
