I don't usually share feedback like this but I am writing to share a very disappointing experience my family had at Frida Mexican Cuisine in Glendale while celebrating my sister's 19th wedding anniversary. Our party consisted of 17 guests, including 5 children, and we spent close to $1,000 during our visit. We were seated in the back area of the restaurant, where the temperature was extremely uncomfortable. There was little to no airflow, and several members of our party, including myself, became overheated. My face felt hot the entire time. We brought this concern to the staff's attention multiple times. Each time, we were told that the heat was due to the doors and that they would open them to improve airflow. Unfortunately, nothing changed, and the situation continued to worsen. As a result of the excessive heat, my 4-year-old niece and 3-year-old nephew became sick and vomited. We understand accidents happen, we ended up cleaning the vomit ourselves because we felt bad. What was very disappointing was that after the second incident, an employee came out and made a profane comment under his breath. Whether it was directed at our family or the situation, it was completely unprofessional and unacceptable. This was supposed to be a special family celebration, but instead it became an uncomfortable and frustrating experience. Given the amount we spent and the reputation of your establishment, we expected much better service, attentiveness, and professionalism from your staff. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, addresses the issues regarding ventilation in that seating area, and reinforces expectations for professional conduct among employees. My party of seven had reservations for a Friday night and were seated right away. The chips were complimentary, but beware that the guacamole is so tax. It was still good and the presentation was honestly very artistic. As it darkened outside, the overhead lights dimmed inside the restaurant and their colored lights grew stronger! We ordered several frozen margaritas and they were generous sizes for a decent price, but were very melted by the time they were served. They were also a bit bland: not very tart, sweet, or strong. I shared a plate of the flautas (two steak / two chicken) and three chicken enchiladas, which both came with rice and beans. Everything was made well and the flautas were super crunchy, so that was a huge plus! It was enough to have plenty of leftovers if you're not too hungry. We were celebrating a graduation and didn't know there was a cake holding fee of $15, which I personally feel is on the pricier end. This place was so so nice. The food was delicious. The service was great and the atmosphere was really fun, the vibe the folks walking by and all of it-GREAT! I had the Chiles Rellenos and it was just humongous. I could only eat less than half and had to take home, but absolutely delicious. The quesadillas were stuffed with the fillings. It wasn't just cheese, like it really had the fillings that they said would be in them, shrimp had shrimp and steak had steak and you didn't just feel like you were eating a tortilla with cheese inside. Came here with a group of five and, unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We ordered several cocktails, including drinks made with top-shelf tequila, but they were very mediocre and lacked the quality we expected for the price. The food was equally underwhelming. For such expensive menu items, the dishes lacked flavor and didn't justify the cost. Service was also quite slow we waited a long time for our drinks even though the restaurant wasn't busy and only had a few tables occupied. Overall, the experience did not meet expectations. It's tough to judge any restaurant on its performance on New Year's Day, with its staff surely tired and not wanting to be working, but Frida is a multi-location operation with all things, no doubt, standardized, so the outcome should have been better. Host was very friendly, but our server seemed miffed to be anywhere other than where they preferred to be. Chips were fresh and salty good, and the two salsas were fresh and tasty. A good start, but that was the end of the excitement. I ordered a Carajillo, which should be a blend of espresso and Licor 43... the drink was not shaken, so the espresso floated atop the liquor, and there was no blending of flavors. Seemed like a very lazy preparation. My meal was a duo of tacos: carne asada and carnitas (with chicharron added). Neither had much flavor, and you'll see in the photo that the steak taco had half as much meat as the pork, which is just transparently cheap. My wife's steak quesadilla ($27!!) was generous of size but equally lacking in flavor. It seems that despite the upscale decor and elevated prices, the kitchen is cooking for the least common denominator diner, serving food that offers nothing in the way of ingenuity or taste. What a beautiful restaurant we came across while passing through town. We were hungry and one thing about me I like trying new restaurants and I was hoping it was similar to the one we tried back in New York. We had great service, the restaurant was pretty empty so that was nice to beat a crowd. We got our food pretty quickly too, and boy was it a lot, I couldn't believe how big the portions were here. The food was tasty and full of flavor, the salsas that they give with chips is for free and we loved them both, they were hot and flavorful. This place needs to hang up their aprons. They take up such a prime location at Americana and its mediocre Mexican food, early 2000's decor, patio chairs all over, and the food is BLAH. We should have known it was going to be meh when all the other restaurants were busy except this one, literally empty except for a few tables. HOW do they pay their lease and how has Americana allowed them to renew their lease even after adding high end stores to the mall?! The steak meat is so tough and seasoning tastes like a packet you would get at Kroger. Don't even get me started on the beans! Frida is one of my favorite restaurants to dine at while at the Americana! I have been coming to Frida for years and it's such a solid spot. Think of like a more expensive, higher quality Acapulco. It's usually chill on week days for lunch but dinner time does get busier. Weekend nights for dinner is even more busy but I've never had to wait longer than five minutes. Service is fine, on busier nights they do tend be a bit slower. But that is as expected. They have complimentary chips and salsa and the chips aren't too deep fried which I love. Their drinks menu is mostly focused on margaritas. Can't go wrong with their strawberry or mango margaritas. I specifically come here for fajitas. They're get healthy but packed with a ton of flavor. The rice and beans don't taste greasy at all. And lately I've been enjoying the chefs special menu. There's a BBQ chipotle short rib on there served with creamy jalapeño mashed potatoes and asparagus and it's delicious. The short rib is so tender and juicy, it falls off the bone. Something along the lines of it is slow roasted for five hours. Please add this to the permanent menu! Other items I've tried are the flautas, tacos and esquites. Ok. Don't let those good drinks you got at the bar that one time fool you. I should have "listened" to all those other reviews. The food is not good. There was little to no seasoning. The food came out tepid at best and then left a greasy taste in your mouth. The flautas were weirdly covered by excess shredded lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream (to cover up the ridiculously thick tortillas covering the tasteless meats inside, no doubt). The carnitas were lacking in flavor. The drinks bought to the table lacked the flare (and the flavor) of those we had at the bar. The space itself, is weirdly expansive. Frida is one of my to go to Mexican Restaurants. Food is ok and they are smaller in portions compared to the other Mexican restaurants. There are plenty of seats outside and indoor and they usually ask inside or outside. Service can be slow at times. They bring the chips and salsa sometimes you don't see the waiter/waitress for a while to place order. Ambiance is really nice. If you seat outside, you get to see the people walking. I highly recommend the chicken enchiladas with green sauce and the taquitos appetizer. It's so fire and you get both potato and chicken taquitos. Both were so good. The rice was okay that came with the enchiladas, it was more firm than I'd like. But I'd absolutely get the chicken enchiladas entree & the taquitos to start again if we're ever back. Delicious. The free chips and salsa were good. Both salsas were mild spicy. The dark red one was smoky with a chili pepper flavor while the green one was citrusy, oniony, sweet, and sour. - Classic Margarita on the rocks ($12). The flavor was good and very lime forward. I could taste the alcohol, but it was on the weaker side. - Queso Fundido ($15.95 + $2.95 added chorizo). The melted oaxacan cheese was just alright, a little bland. We added chorizo at our server's recommendation. I appreciated that the chorizo wasn't salty, but it did not have a distinguishing flavor. The queso was served with warm flour tortillas, which I think were sonoran style. The overall effect was like DIY hand-torn quesadilla bites. It was a little heavy to eat before an entree. - Carnitas Platter ($24.95). The pieces of pork on top were dry. The meat got juicier towards the bottom of the pile. The pork in the middle was dry like chicken breast, but not tough to chew. At least the flavor was good; it was savory, and I could taste the beer. I gave the chicharron to my bf. I liked the rice, which had some pieces of carrot and zucchini in it for health. The pico de gallo was okay, but didn't really taste like pico de gallo. It was more like a sweet tomato salsa. We recently came to dine here over the weekend. What happened to this restaurant? For starters it was not packed as in the past. The hostess had no personality and robotically told us we would have to wait 25 minutes even though I saw some empty tables. However, the manager was attentive and we were seated within 10 minutes. We found out that some of the plates we used to order were not listed on the menu anymore. Also, the waiter was nice but not attentive. He never asked us if our order was right. As a matter of fact, I had to flag another waiter to get his attention. The food was OK but not as good as it used to be. Unfortunately, I no longer recommend this place. We were at the Americana in Glendale last night, and we wanted to give it a try to Fridas. Bad decision. My brother ordered two tacos, one of fish, and one of portabelo mushroom, they had no flavor. My wife ordered the flautas, my sister in law and I ordered the fridas plater, the taquitos had no flavor, the sopes no flavor either, all 3 orders looked the same, they were buried in mountain of lettuce, the refried beans taste burnt, dried and tasted like can beans. Also, this restaurant is located right next to South Brand Boulevard, and BevMo is right across the street from it. SMH Food: I ordered the carnitas enchiladas, which came with Mexican rice and refried beans. Enchiladas are one of those foods that, when done correctly, you can't stop thinking about The enchiladas that I ordered were packed with carnitas. I was decently surprised by that. They totally didn't skimp. The carnitas were soft, rich, juicy, flavorful, and extremely tender. It was so fricken delicious. The corn tortillas that encased the carnitas were warm and soft. They weren't soggy thankfully. Both the green and the red sauce had a good consistency, and they both weren't spicy at all. I loved both sauces. The refried bean that came with my enchiladas were rich and creamy. The Mexican rice was cold and disappointing, but thankfully that wasn't the star of the dish. It was the enchiladas, so I didn't really care for the Mexican rice at all. I also ordered a sangria. Slightly disappointed with my sangria because it was definitely watered down, but it still fruity and tasty. Staff: The staff here are very friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, helpful, welcoming, and polite. Gabby was our server, and she did a fantastic job serving us. Amazing customer awareness. She knew that I was undecided on which sauce I wanted for my enchiladas, so she told me that she would make sure the kitchen put half red and half green sauce on my enchiladas. Perfection! Excellent communication skills. She listened to my friend and I and asked all the right questions to ensure that we got the dining experience that we wanted. Overall, my friend and I had a phenomenal experience dining at Frida thanks to Gabby and her outstanding customer service. I honestly would have given this place 4 stars because I think their sides for their entrees and sangria could have been better, but Gabby was the saving grace for this review. That said, I'm very happy that I dined al fresco - in the perfect L.A. weather of 5pm (that magic Summertime when you don't need a jacket). It also helps that they have plenty of patio heaters. One thing that I appreciated off the bat is that ordering a flight of any of their tequilas & mezcals - especially the top shelf items, allows you to try things without having to go in on an entire bottle. I went with a flight some of their top 3 mezcals: - Burrito Fiestero, Cenizo - Quiereme Mucha, Cuishe - Quiereme Mucha, Tepextate Instead of shelving out what would had been $61 - I got to try a slightly smaller sample of these 3 premium mezcals for a very reasonable fraction of the price. Which also included a sample of house sangria as a chaser. As far as food goes, I knew that I wanted the Frida Molcajete (pictured) & it didn't disappoint. It's a great way to sample a great array of the delicious foods that they have to offer. I also highly recommend ordering the additional (3 prawns for 12.95) Come for the food, come back for the service! Happy hour doesn't start till 3 and it's basically the same drinks/food as the lunch special but cheaper. The margarita was good. The green avacado based salsa was a nice change from a more typical green salsa. I had the octopus chefs special, amazing!
