My family and finace were in Galena for about 5 days this year, we go every year and we finally took the chance to visit Fried Green Tomatoes. We decided to come here to celebrate my engagement just a few hours before and showed up around 7 with no reservation. We were told that the wait would be about 30 minutes, but surprisingly, after only about 5 minutes we were seated in their upstairs area by the window. Our table decided to order the green fried tomatoes as an app, of course. They were breaded, topped with a sweet marinara sauce and cheese, and pretty delicious. Then everyone ordered their separate entrees: a pork cutlet type dish, lasagna, lobster ravioli, steak and shrimp, chicken marsala, and I got the mushroom and kale ravioli. Everyone seemed to enjoy their dish other than me. I just thought the ravioli didn't have much flavor. Kale is pretty bland and it seems like they didn't add anything to the ravioli filling and there was no sauce. Overall, although I didn't have a positive food experience here, my family seemed to enjoy the dishes they got. I would consider coming back here again, although I am a picky eater and maybe have to think twice about what I order next time. read more

The first time my husband and I were here was, well right after we became husband and wife. Galena was our mini-getaway after our wedding, and Fried Green Tomatoes was part of that getaway experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the service, food and ambiance at that time. Fast-forward a year and some months to this past weekend, where my amazing husband planned a surprise birthday weekend trip with a huge group of friends to Galena! (Best husband ever, right??) Anyways, Fried Green Tomatoes was the pick for our first dinner of the weekend. A reservation was made for 10 people and here's out all that panned out... Our table awaited us upstairs, we sat down and after 5 minutes were greeted by our waiter Marcel. Our group ordered several bottles of wine and a mixed drink (No win-o for me-o). We ended up waiting some time for all that to arrive, but decided on some appetizers we would like to order. After more time passed we received all of our beverages and decided, as the very hungry patrons we were, maybe it's best we order our appetizers AND entrees so there's as little gap between food as possible. ;-) Because we only ordered two appetizers, I asked Marcel (twice) if we could have our salads with our appetizers. "Sure, no problem." Great! To emphasize the amount of time that passed during this time, it was exactly ONE HOUR from sitting our butts down to receiving our appetizers. Holy cow! Our salads were not brought out with our appetizers, so I had to request that again. Finally they came out, but some people were not pleased with the dressing as they were not offered a choice. Additionally, during the ordering process some members of our table asked if soup was an option instead of salad, which it was. Upon finding this out, other members of our group wish they were offered that option. All of the tables around us had bread, but we did not so we asked for some. We were told the bread would be coming out with our entrees. I don't know, but this doesn't sit right with me. If there are other tables with bread and no entrees, and we are all starving... can't we just get some bread?? Strange. An hour and a half into our meal we received our entrees (and bread), which was all delicious! They did end up surprising me with a birthday ice cream sundae and sang to me, which was really nice. Overall, the food is great and obviously made me return, but unfortunately the service was not a good experience this round and left little to be desired. I likely won't return again. read more

Unfortunate service experience at this place tonight. Showed up for a reservation and was greeted warmly. Told to head upstairs as they had a table with our name on it by the window...except we weren't seated by the window. Which is fine cuz we didn't ask for that and didn't care; but stands out now as the first of multiple failures. After we were seated, literally nobody stopped by our table for more than 12 minutes. I was within a minute and a half of flagging someone down to ask if we had a server assigned or if anyone knew we hadn't been helped. Strike 2. Waitress took our order and most of that went fine. Minor thing with croutons on our salads after saying we didn't want any bread, but that's a nuanced thing that not everyone would pick up on. About 2/3 through our meal she asked if she could get us anything. I ordered another drink and asked for our waters to be refilled. As an aside, I don't understand how a restaurant doesn't just have people come by somewhat regularly to ensure you have water, but whatever. Strike 2.5. Wait for the drink I ordered; nothing. Wait for the water; nothing. Finished my food, thought maybe they'd bring the drink later...nothing. Finally the waitress comes by again and asks if we need anything else or would just like the bill. Cool, I guess we're done here. Strike 3. There was just a lot of basic service 101 stuff they fell short on. Some of this was maybe the server, but I'd but most of this on the organization. Dunno if they were too busy or what, but they seemed underprepared for a normal summer Saturday night. If you're short staffed, then just tell us! We're reasonable and patient people if we know something is up! But tonight's first-time experience was disappointing. Food was good. Salmon was overcooked a bit but it was fine. Filet and shrimp was good. The drink we had was good, though their cocktail list was short and underwhelming. We'd maybe try the place again, but tonight was an oof. read more

First time visiting Galena and I absolutely loved it. A friend had made reservations for Fried Green Tomatoes on a Saturday and it was delicious. I had their special which was filet mignon topped with crab and a side of asparagus. They start you off with a side salad and delicious bread. A few of us split the fried green tomatoes, I don't know how "traditional" they are but if you like pizza you would probably like them. It was basically a green tomato smothered in mozzarella with marinara sauce. I enjoyed them! For dinner I had the steak martini appetizer and a side of their gouda mac and cheese. I would not pair these two things together because the steak martini has a strong flavor which will make the mac and cheese taste weak. Separately they were great! A side of the Mac was huge!! The martini would have been plenty filling by itself. For dessert I did the Yelp check in offer to get the free French silk ice cream. They only charge $4 normally for the ice cream which would totally be worth it! It was so creamy and delicious with nice chocolate chunks. Great portion size! I came here tonight to celebrate my birthday with some girl friends and it was our first time there. It was a really neat spot with that olden feel to it. Staff was very friendly and on top of everything. We all ordered the filet and shrimp. Everything had perfect flavor and everything came as we ordered even though the server didn't write anything down! The meals also came with a side salad that included their house raspberry vinaigrette which was delicious. While planning a recent weekend girls trip to Galena, this place appeared to be one of the highest rated dinner places in the area according to online reviews. Between the positive reviews and delicious looking pictures, I figured that this place would be worth a shot. My group of friends and I came for our 5:45 reservation and were seated upstairs. A reservation would be wise if you come here since the place really filled up during the time we were here. The complimentary bread was warm and covered with melted butter. The house salad that came with my meal was one of the better salads I've had in a while. The house dressing (probably homemade) tasted amazing ! For my main course I ordered the espresso rubbed filet and substituted the mashed potatoes with lobster risotto. The filet was tender and had an excellent flavor, but the lobster risotto wasn't anything special. Other seafood risottos I've had include pieces of seafood in it, but the one here had no pieces of lobster in it that I could see or taste. For dessert, I shared the turtle cheesecake with a friend and loved it. I don't remember the name of our waitress, but she did a great job handling the needs of our table. read more

Tried this joint on our first trip to Galena. Our group of 6 was immediately seated on one of the tables by the windows upstairs. Highly recommend if you can snag this spot because it allows you to appreciate the vintage vibes of the restaurant itself but also peek out and catch the lively action on Main Street. Each of our mains came with an individual salad and a large portion of garlic bread to share (both were fantastic). I tried 3 items - Chicken Marsala, Lasagna & Shrimp Diavlo. Each was great & I'd recommend them in the same order. Portions are not huge but not too small either. Dessert tiramisu is definitely one the best I've ever had. This was our best meal in Galena, by far! A reservation was highly recommended. We started with the fried green tomatoes (naturally!) as an appetizer and it was just ok. I scraped off the heavy coating of cheese to actually taste the tomatoes underneath. My boyfriend had the espresso steak cooked to a perfect medium rare and I had the shrimp fra diavolo. Both entreés were absolutely delicious! The prices were a bit high at $36 and $26, respectively. But this is a tourist town, after all.
