My wife and I picked Fried Green Tomatoes as our dinner spot for our first night in Galena this weekend. We were not disappointed!! We started our meal with the very yummy crab cakes! They were seasoned and cooked very well and the spicy sauce that came with them was really good too! For our dinners we got the Pork Osso Bucco and the Scallops. We had another great experience at Fried Green a few days ago. We love this restaurant and have been coming there for years, even before the moved to Main Street. One of the main reasons we selected it to dine is to again have a wonderful server, Vera. She was our server last June and we had one of the most fun dining experiences we have ever had. She is knowledgeable and efficient, but importantly she is just sheer fun. She has a great sense of humor and knows how to "read the crowd" to determine how interactive to be with guests. We prefer a lot of interaction and we certainly got that again with her. The food was wonderful. We had an appetizer, which turned out to be unnecessary since with the meals one gets a nice salad and bread. I had a small fillet and shrimp for a reasonable price. It was delicious as we my wife's salmon. The tiramisu for dessert was just as good as I have had in Italy. Fried Green is a great asset for Galena and Vera is a great asset for Fried Green. read more

We started with fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and enjoyed a bottle of wine, my husband ordered filet mignon and the server highly recommended the blackberry pork ribeye so I gave it a try and boy was I impressed. We were a little disappointed this trip to FGT. As it is summer, and as "Tomatoes" is in the name, you would think the caprese salad would be special...but not really. Boring, tasteless beef steak tomatoes and lame slices of mozzarella with very little basil involved. My fish was very good and we had risotto with scallops that wasn't anything special but not bad by any means. The service was good, however I had to drink my wife's water glass empty before getting more for the table. Wine list needs work but my martini was solid. The food was fantastic, the staff was very attentive & friendly. There is plenty of space for large parties or just a table for two. The dress code is relaxed to dressy. They have multiple areas to dine so you aren't surrounded by people dressed up or those who've been walking around all day. I was in yoga pants. & i didn't feel out of place. Yes, consider this one of your stops while in Galena. Our little group raved about the bread while splitting lasagna and chicken piccata. The piccata was not super breaded and SO moist. The homemade marinara in the lasagna and the lasagna's composition was a delight. Each entree came with a delicious green salad with the house raspberry vinaigrette. First off I would like to say that my waitress was wonderful- she was attentive and provided great service. In fact the whole front of the house staff was courteous, professional, and welcoming. Unfortunately I was very disappointed by the food. We ordered the expresso steak and the pork osso bucco. ( my waitress did recommend the pork ribeye- but I had seen several reviews of the pork osso bucco and a bartender from another establishment recommended it as well so I went with it ) First came the salads- which were nicely garnished- but had a cloyingly sweet raspberry ( I think?) vinaigrette- which drenched the salad- it tasted okay for a few bites but I wasn't able to finish it because it was so sweet. Second came the main course. The steak which I tried did not have a lot of flavor- definitely lacking salt in the rub they used and was kind of one note. My pork was cooked well but bland and even the extra cider glaze really couldn't save it. I really wanted to like this dish- but I feel like there were some errors in execution- especially the off putting rubbery skin on the pork shank ( it needs to be either crispy or kinda so soft that the fat melts in your mouth ) this was neither. It was flat, rubbery and was difficult for me to eat texture wise. All of this was on what we're the worst mashed potatoes that I have ever had in an upscale establishment. They tasted like instant potatoes- they were granular, watery- and I wish I took a picture- but they were perfectly white. I love mashed potatoes and to spend 37 dollars on a meal which features instant potatoes was very disappointing. We spoke to the waitress and she understood our concerns- and offered a free dessert- however I was so put off by my experience that I simply didn't want any more food from this establishment. I did offer to pay full price but she did give us a discount on my meal. All in all for the price it was really disappointing for the quality of food. read more

This was the worst meal I have ever purchased at a restaurant. I downloaded Yelp specifically so I could write this review. If this review prevents just one person from setting foot in this restaurant, I can perish a happy man. Wine was ok. Cocktail was atrocious, worst mixed drink I have ever had. Had the consistency of syrup and tasted like super sweet grenadine and cough syrup. It was around this time that I started to feel the classy ambiance of the place start to turn into some sort of strange parody of itself, as I pondered the plastic Dasani bottles that we received instead of water glasses, and listened to the moans of the sloppy drunks seated at the table behind us. We ordered fired green tomatoes and steak martini as appetizers. This was fine, but tasted like something I could make at home. It was nice to have the sickly taste of my robitussin flavored cocktail washed from my mouth. I was excited about the bread and oil, but the oil was poured into shallow dishes, one for each of us, like we were thirsty dogs. The bread was something I have never seen before, a fluffy mound covered in an obscene amount of cheese. We passed the circular loaf of bread around the table, brushing away excess cheese and ripping off pieces by hand, further contributing to hungry dog aesthetic. The "house salad" was drenched in extremely sweet raspberry dressing, and brought back bad memories involving hospital food, and the loss of a loved one. The entrees was when I truly began to question my life's path, and how I ended up paying upwards of 100 dollars for food that appeared to be microwaved. The risotto was chunky and crunchy, and my shrimp pasta was of such mediocrity that I did not even feel inclined to finish it. My friends ordered two other pasta dishes, which had the same type of noodles and vegetables as my dish. None of us finished our entrees, despite the fact that they all cost us enough money to feed a small village. The money I spent was worth it though, as I feel more prepared to spot scams in the future. Before I left, I drank my syrupy, sickly sweet cocktail as quickly as possible, hopping to wipe the memory of this surreal, hellish restaurant from my mind. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be, as Fried Green Tomates came back to haunt me a few hours later with violent cramps and dark thoughts on the toilet of my hotel room. The shame I felt walking to the front desk to ask for a plunger was a real low point in my life. For the love of all the good things in this world, do not go to this restaurant. Make some pasta at home. Or just starve. Anything is better. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for my birthday dinner and LOVED it! I Immediately noticed they served warm bread with olive oil for dipping which is my FAVORITE. My lemon drop martini was so good, just the right strength and flavor. AMBIANCE: Cozy & rustic, but classy. Slighly dim, nice large window in dining hall. It looks sort of fancy, but there were people dressed in all types of clothes. In all the times we've come to Galena, we didn't have this on our food radar. Finally 7 of us had dinner and it was a winner! It far bigger than I thought, will 2 large floors. The main floor is noisier because of the large bar. Upstairs is quieter. It's an Italian American steakhouse. We had a great server, Jessica, to offer suggestions. We started with some appetizers. Obviously the fried green tomatoes which had melted cheese and a marinara sauce. The Steamed Mussels were a hit and a loaf of bread was perfect for the sauce. I had the shrimp Diavolo. It was a nice spicy dish with pasta. You get a house salad with dinner, except I'm an iceberg lettuce guy, not the foo foo stuff this one had.
