Horrible experience. Front desk manager was very disrespectful and rude. If You make reservations for a specific time you shouldn't be told you still have to wait an hour and a half. We made reservations for a party of 10. Last minute our grandmother cancelled because she wasn't feeling well. When we arrive, we're told since we no longer have 10 in our party and only 9 we have to get in line. After explaining the last minute cancellation by our grandmother the front desk manager advised "I can't help you, count your party again and if you have 10 I can help you". What a nice gem out in the countryside. A quick 40 min drive from downtown Baltimore this is a great place to bring a large party. You order a main course before going in and unlimited sides and dessert is provided to the table! You MUST order the crab cakes! Voted the best cakes by Baltimore Magazine in 2009 these didn't fall short of that win. Friendly Farm is a restaurant me and my family have came to since I was a little kid, and it is quite simply my favorite restaurant to go to locally. It is always a treat as you are showered with side dishes included in the cost of your main course. Which by the way I have never had a bad main course, crab cakes are excellent, fried chicken and chicken tenders are the best I have ever had, steak is juicy and great. Anything on the menu will be amazing. Included with all sides a drink and ice cream and coffee it is the perfect dinner destination. Geez...I can't believe that we almost didn't go to this place because of the negative reviews...I sure don't know what these folks were thinking, but our experience was a 180 from theirs. It was too cold and windy to enjoy the gorgeous grounds other than looking at the beautiful vista and interesting goose behavior from our window seat. My first trepidation was quickly resolved: I was worried about the "family type service" because I have had some awful experiences going to Amish restaurants and sitting with strangers. Here, we were seated at a quiet table alone. Then, our expectations were lowered by the food comments on Yelp and we were blown away at what was brought to the table. (more later) There were also comments about how expensive they are here. Again, I don't know what people expect but we spent less than $25 each for enough (good) food to feed the Russian army. (and we could have had lots more if we wanted...for free!) Lastly, there were negative reviews of the service. Karen, our waitress was super attentive, friendly, helpful and just a pleasure to talk to. So, here is the bottom line on the food: 4 pieces of fried chicken-crunchy skin, moist meat (yes, more seasoning on the batter would have been better-still, pretty darn good) crab cake-creamy, lots of lumps, good seasoning, nicely broiled exterior-one of our top 5. unlimited French fries-wonderful potato flavor (crispier would have been better but still yummy) unlimited cole slaw-wonderful-in our top 5 unlimited corn-yes, it is canned, but nicely flavored and a combo of white and yellow. unlimited green beans-again, they are canned but not mushy and had chunks of ham-we enjoyed them. unlimited pickled beets-the best ever unlimited home made apple butter-the best ever unlimited cottage cheese-the best ever unlimited canned peaches-I like these mixed with the cottage cheese and last but not least-the best dinner rolls and sugar rolls and again, unlimited. This weekend while on social isolation and lockdown - hubby and I ordered a chicken dinner from Friendly Farms - Carry Out. When we picked up the meal, curbside, it was packed as neatly as a picnic basket with all the wonderful food we were so accustomed to eating at Friendly Farms. The chicken was as moist and delicious as chicken can be; the apple butter and cottage and cole slaw - made with perfection and the sugar biscuits - the best. OK I shouldnt even be writing this review as I really do not want people to know 'Ive eaten here...but I feel it is my duty to warn. OK I guess if you live at a nursing home, eat frequently at buffetts, or if you recently got out prison, then you might find this a five star restaurant. My old friend...who insisted it was her favorite restaurant ordered us both surf and turf (filet mignon and crab cake) The crab cake tasted good but had filler and some ingredient I couldnt put my tongue on,and the filet was less than flavorful but OK...maybe I was missing a bernaise or peppercorn sauce...or sauteed mushrooms...or a grill taste but it just didnt seem worth 37.00. The meal for two adults and 1 child cost well over a hundered...and there was no wine...no fancy coffee...no fancy dessert...nuttin' Now the main dish aside, it was the atmosphere and side dishes that really got me. I felt like I was in a BAD cafeteria, lights were up, no cloth napkins, diner quality plates and silver, huge room with lots of tables and waitresses walking by handing out plastic pitchers of sodas and side dishes. The sides were cottage cheese, cole slaw, french fries, and stringbeans. Everything just screamed fried, unhealthy, or just plain fattening. I prefer low carbs or at least nonprocessed carbs and just couldnt really eat anything but the coleslaw and cottage cheese... as the stringbeans were cooked til death and salty. It just killed me...and I couldnt help to look around at all of the elderly and how this food would kill them too! When was the last time you were in a restaurant and someone brought you a bowl of cling peaches (in light syrup) and a bowl of cottage cheese? Part of the charm at Friendly Farm is certainly that kind of retro vibe. Some people are here to enjoy it in an ironic way, but then the next table over is a party of octegenarians who are quite happy to have the canned green beans, thank you very much. But before you can dismiss this place as a paean to the worst food of the 1950's, here comes a plate of some truly spectacular fried chicken. I would swear that the corn was fresh-cut off the cob. The french fries were also hand-cut potatoes, perfectly cooked, served piping hot. The crabcake that Travis had was certainly among the best I've tasted. And for dessert, I bought two pies for the table to share, and they were embarassingly good. The peach-blackberry pie with a brown-sugar streusel top was a testament to the fact that in the right hands, canned cling peaches do have their place in the world. And the chocolate meringue pie was as good as I've ever had. Don't come expecting fancy, and definitely wear your elastic-waistband pants. The sides are all served family style, and they'll refill the bowls as often as you ask. This is uncomplicated dining, and if you're in the mood for that particular brand of comfort, then Friendly Farm is way better than Cracker Barrel, and well worth the drive. read more

I have to say I was saddened when reading some of the bad reviews on here! My family and I have enjoyed this place for years now , and never plan on leaving it behind . To sum this place up is like a big family friendly place that serves the types of things you would get at grand moms house after church. I promise you will not leave hungry! I have had most of what they offer and have yet to be disappointed . They have great fried chicken ! I am also a big fan of the crab cakes as well as the shrimp . My husband and I will get two different meats and split them up making our own combos at the table . The sides are ENDLESS! and everyone has a favorite ! We tend to eat them out of the baby beets :) Now when you read on here that it's not a 5 star place it's not , but I mean that in the way that this is not an uptight place ! People knock on them about the seating ... this place is sooo busy all the time with large groups and families that they have to have seating like this! I would like to add that we love this place so much it has become our thanksgiving spot ... I would have NEVER thought about going to a restaurant on a holiday , but the food and energy there is amazing ! Really disappointing experience. The grounds are beautiful, but the inside of the restaurant looks like a high school cafeteria. The waitstaff is pleasant enough, but everything comes out in the wrong order. The cottage cheese, coleslaw, stewed apples, and apple butter were already on the table when we sat down. About 15 minutes later, the rolls (includes potato rolls and sugar rolls) arrived. The entrees came out another 15-20 minutes later and then the sides (fries, green beans, and corn) came out 15 minutes after that. The ice cream dessert is served in a tiny bowl (single scoop). The fried chicken was tepid (room temperature) and clearly had been sitting around for a while. The meat was dry and without much flavor. Not sure how this is considered by some reviewers as among the best fried chicken in Maryland. I've had better fried chicken at fast food joints. The Maryland crab cakes were good and with almost no filler, but the portion is small for the steep price. The corn and green beans were mushy and tasted like reheated canned vegetables. The sugar rolls were very good, but then again, sugar-coated fried dough is good anywhere you have it. It's kind of hard to screw that one up. Overall, I don't get why this place packs them in week after week. Perhaps nostalgia from locals? Perhaps no other dining options for people who live in the Upperco region? And the prices are steep for what you get. Others justify the high prices by focusing on the "all you can eat" aspect. But remember the "all you can eat" rule doesn't apply to the entree. How expensive is it to refill bowls of rolls, cottage cheese, coleslaw, apple butter, stewed apples, fries, and canned green beans/corn? When you have a menu that offers few options, you expect the offerings to be exceptional. Unfortunately, there is nothing on this menu (except perhaps the crab cake) which you could not get an equal or superior version of at a local diner or country buffet restaurant for far lower prices. read more

Wow. I'm left somewhat speechless upon coming to this place. It was somewhat surreal. After a brief hike on the Gunpowder Falls trails, we decided to explore the eateries around Hereford area. We looked up Friendly Farms, so off we go! Driving miles of seeing farms, I was surprised to find Friendly Farms to be this big establishment in the middle of nowhere (like a mansion down in the South). Then walking inside to the restaurant, I was surprised again that we had to order beforehand and that even though it was called "family styled restaurant," each person had to order a separate entree (otherwise there was a $10.95 sharing charge). Ok, so instead of wanting to share a chef's special (orange roughy and crabcake), I ordered the porterhouse steak and my friend ordered the crabcake. I already know it'd be too much food to ingest in one sitting. Then I was further surprised (surprised by my surprise? Ha!) by the place itself. It looked like a cafeteria in a Lion's club or some sort. Long tables separated by aisles. My friend and I definitely stood out as "city people" (if there is a definition for that and we were coming from a hiking trip). Needless to say, it was somewhat uneasy for me to eat there. Enough surprises, onto the food. The dining experience was alright. By "family style," we get unlimited amount of sides (ranging from small bread rolls to cole slaw to canned peaches). Not much of a long wait, we got our entree along with more sides (french fries, green beans, and corn). As expected, my steak was huge, and it was cooked fine (nothing fantastic about it). However, my friend's crabcake was great! Jumbo lump crab meat with not too much filling. I should have gotten that instead. The fries were also a hit for me. Ended the meal with ice cream with different flavors to choose. I got the Moose chuck (vanilla ice cream with fudge and peanut butter cup), and that was good. Overall, aside from being shocked by the whole establishment of Friendly Farms, it was an interesting dining experience and the food wasn't all too bad. Friendly Farms was good but as many said, not really worth the cost. A bunch in my party had the fried chicken, which can was awesome! I had the ham which was really quite forgettable. Definitely not recommended. I was also disappointed that a restaurant with Farms in the name uses canned veggies for their sides/apps. I wonder how much of this food comes from the farm and how much is just canned and just Cracker Barrel with more ambience. The scene was pretty awesome although less once inside. The drive out to Friendly Farms was incredible. The restaurant sits on a hill in the middle of farm country. Spectacular. Inside feels more like a rec room in a community center. With the options we have for family style food around Baltimore I won't be back until someone pulls be back. It's a cute place to try once if you want something different. If you enjoy eating in a high school cafeteria this is your place. The food is expensive for the quality you are getting. Just about everything is fried and the vegetables, which only include corn niblets, green beans, and French fries, are straight out of the can. Stay as far away from the steak as humanly possible, it was frozen for no less than a year and will only make you angry as you try to pass a piece of shoe leather off as a meal. I would of had a better time at McDonalds because the service is equal. You pay and tip for your dinner prior to eating or even sitting down at the table. Friendly Farms is literally "over the hill" from our Maryland house (to the point where we walk out to the back of the yard to look at how crowded the parking lot is and see how long the wait may be). Being so close, it is no wonder it has been a family favorite, and frequent haunt, longer than I have been alive. The crab cakes are, bar none, the BEST you will ever have. That said, the broasted chicken is absolutely fabulous as well - better than grandma made. You order your main entree (aka your meat) when you walk in, all of the appetizers and sides being served family-style at your table. My absolute favorite is to split a double crab cake platter and an order of all white meat chicken with another member of our party - the perfect Maryland surf and turf! I never seem to make it to ice cream at the end, but they always have 5 or 6 choices. There is a large function room in the basement, the perfect place for family gatherings or birthday parties. For kids, don't forget to grab a few extra dinner rolls and head outside to feed the ducks and geese. While you wait, which can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours on a weekend near the holidays, head down to the little store for some cute country collectibles. read more

Way up near Timonium, there is a family style dining hall known as Friendly Farms that brings back fond memories of my childhood. In the summer months we used to feed the ducks at the pond and enjoy walks along the grounds after our meal. The other day we returned to Friendly Farms for my dad's birthday lunch, after about a 15 year hiatus. Everything was just as I remembered it, though it was freezing outside since we never came in winter! VERY family friendly atmosphere with a no frills experience as many others have mentioned. I loved the energy from about half the patrons decked out in Ravens gear and getting ready for the Super Bowl!! Most of us went with the crab cake and my dad got the surf and turf. Simple and perfect, one of the best crab cakes you'll ever eat. And with restaurant week going on, which we didn't even know, $20 for this softball sized gem is a steal! Great view and laid back setting ensure good times for all. In all honesty, gotta give a one star deduction because the side dishes are not all as divine as the main course. Beets, cottage cheese, cole slaw and sugar rolls were our favorites. Corn and green beans are ok but clearly right out of a can. We walked right in, ordered our entree, then sat down at the table to be served our food country style! There were a few families in there eating, but by the time we left there was a pretty good number of people there. I ordered the Seafood Combo which comes with a Crabcake and 6 fried shrimp which I split with my mom, she ordered a Crabcake and my father ordered Fried Chicken. The charm here is that country cookin' and that down-home vibe. I just read a review here that said "my crabcakes were almost as good as Faidley's" - well, I'd like my friend to come here and challenge it since she's never been to Friendly Farm and she loves Faidley's crabcakes. Went here with my family (young boys ages 6 and 3) and another family while visiting MD. I consider myself open to new experiences and places that are not fancy but I have to say I was disappointed with this place. I would have liked to give this place a better review (beautiful location, family style sides, family run) but for the price, I have to give it two stars. Crab cake did not disappoint, however, lots of lump crab meat and almost no filler, BUT, not sure it was worth the $22 price. Apparently this place is highly rated for their crab cake and I can see the draw but the plate was disappointing, could have used some lemon wedges and maybe some tartar sauce (without having to ask for it). Others at my table ordered the pork chops (generous serving but they were dry), fried shrimp (crispy and good) and the kids all had chicken tenders. All entrees are served with unlimited family-style sides like sugar biscuits (good, but when was the last time dough fried up with sugar was not good?), Apple butter, coleslaw, beets, cottage cheese (random) and then hot sides like green beans, corn and fries. The meal ends with a choice of ice cream or sherbet. I like the family style feel and it felt like a meal a grandmother would make, but not necessarily worth paying $130+ for for 8 people, 4 of whom are kids. The decor inside does not live up to the expectation when you pull up, beautiful farm set on rolling hills with ducks wandering around, very picturesque. The inside, however, could use a makeover. It looks like a high school cafeteria, very dated, all the way down to the paper place mats with prayer verses on them (not my thing). You can tell this is a family operation and everyone was very nice, but..... All in all, friendly service, so so food, but at a steep price. They did get part of it right with the term "farm" in the title because I felt like a head of cattle the moment I walked in. I was made to choose and pay for my order (tip included) at the beginning. Speaking of choosing my order, the menu is as bland as it is limited. I did get heaping portions...of food that I (or anyone else) could have easily prepared for far less money. When I say that, I mean everything that was served tasted like it was packaged and/or frozen before it was prepared and on my plate. We used to go to Friendly Farms often when our children were little. But not so much since then until last night when we were invited there to celebrate a friend's birthday. This place has not changed at all in the 25 years since I last visited. And that's a good thing. Food was still home style good if you still serve canned green beans at your house. Very good crab cakes and truly great fried chicken are the stand outs here. A good place to go with large parties or small children. One of my favorite restaurants. I recently read reviews from people who visited Friendly Farm Restaurant and was shocked by some of the comments. It is understandable that diners differ in their favorite foods and expected comments however, having traveled to this restaurant numerous times with friends and family, I would like to offer my comments. The grounds are beautiful, scenic and ideal for this type of restaurant. Any children with us are happy to see and feed the ducks and geese with leftover rolls from their dinner. The interior of the restaurant is huge, colorful and welcoming, and during this pandemic period tables spaced appropriately and sanitary table cleansing if practiced. It is true that you pay when you order. I always offer my tip up front because the service, in my opinion, is very good. If a diner would rather wait until meal is ended they should offer their tip after eating. Some reviews complain about the "appetizers", stating that they are not really typical appetizers. They serve apple butter (Musselmans' - I asked), cottage cheese (which I only eat because of the apple butter), home-made cole slaw (the best in the world), pickled beets (great) either sliced pears or peaches (meh--), small rolls and sugar biscuits (wonderful). I can say that we all enjoy this assortment and have to watch the kids so they eat to many sugar rolls to spoil their appetite. The sides are mostly the same: yellow & white corn niblets (probably canned, but who cares) green beans & pieces of ham (may be canned), fries (best if you tell them to fry them a little more if you like crispy). Sometimes we have been surprised by small ears of corn or squash. Most complaints have been "no seasoning." Nothing that a sprinkle of salt can't cure. The main entrees I will comment according to my own preferences. Fried Chicken - Always fried perfectly & if necessary a little sprinkle of salt will suffice. My only complaint is the size. Drumsticks are tiny, breast halves are tiny - I don't know where they are getting their chicken but the portions are so much smaller than in the past. Crab Cakes - Noted as best crabcakes in the world by just about everyone. Almost no filler and every bite is jumbo lump crab. Any softness in the cake is some egg or mustard needed to hold it together. They are no served in balls, but are broiled making them much healthier. Ham - Wonderful - huge portions - always take leftovers home. Fish - Prefer other options due to fact that I can do fish at home. Fried Shrimp - Simply the best - huge shrimp served with cocktail sauce. Steaks and Fillets - Usually chewy but taste is okay. Eggplant Parmigiano - I had it once but did nothing for me. Barbecued Ribs - Wonderful, but extremely messy to eat (for me), the kids loved it. When in season - soft crabs, fried oysters are the stars Pork chops - Haven't tried but my son liked it very much. In closing, I love this restaurant. No, it isn't the ritzy establishments that some have mentioned, but for what it's worth, Friendly Farm is where we all want to eat when we know it is a long drive. Went here for lunch and thought it was very interesting how they have you order your food when you walk in the door before you are seated. Once we were seated though, the appetizers came out and the entrees came out not too far behind. A lot of sides to choose from which was awesome. I think it's more of an older clientele. The crab cake was better than average but not as good as pappas. read more

My husband heard about this place, so we decided to visit. It is simply amazing! The drive is beautiful, the property is well kept, very homey. The staff is very helpful, very friendly. The food was pretty delicious, good portions and fresh. I really enjoyed it. Will definitely be back. read more

Way cool place ... been there twice now and have just been amazed at the uniqueness, quality and service. As the other reviews state, you order your entree as you walk in and then sit down and get served a 3.141592654 course meal ... tons of "firsts" thrown in and then some green beans, corn and french fries are brought to the table with your entree.
