Okay first of all the people running this establishment could teach most servers a thing or two about high quality customer service and we are from Long Island where you have many competitive restaurants with good service! At first we weren't sure what to expect from reading the menu but let me assure you, everything is made with LOVE. Iykyk. We ended up ditching our reservations at some bougie restaurant to come back here a second time during our stay. The ambiance is cozy, clean, & minimalist. The Amish people are in a lane of their own when it comes to quality. They just nail everything across the board. We were traveling through on a trip, and didn't know where to stop for dinner. This place got great reviews and I see why! We are from NC, so we had lots of questions about the food. I tried the ham balls and had pasta salad and broccoli salad, and my husband had chicken croquettes with mashed potatoes. They don't skimp on portions, we had so much food left over! For dessert we had Shoo Fly Pie, the waitress was funny as she described it as "boring". It was delicious, but she was right, the flavor was "boring". Off the beaten path and away from the typical tourist locations ... you can find this little gem of a place. Filled with mainly locals - it's across the street from the fire station. Our server was super friendly and very attentive... food came out hot and quickly. The food was overall good and everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. One person requested butter instead of gravy on their mashed potatoes and the result way way too much butter. There is a small parking lot in front of the restaurant. It has a simple interior, the scenic room has a lovely mural. The service was friendly. The food was great. My Rueben was one of the best I have had. The thousand island dressing was perfect and the pastrami was cooked well. The bread is made onsite. The hand cut fries were yummy and I loved the potato salad. My husband also enjoyed his Rueben and coleslaw. It takes a little getting to this place but it is worth it. The Crab Bisque special and open face roast beef was excellent. The service was top notch, took our order quickly and got food out without any delays. It as an open kitchen area that you can observe them preparing your food and the prices were reasonable for the large quantity of food they provide. I went to this place for the first time with my parents who have been here before. I got the chicken pot pie which I thought was really good. My parents liked the food here before but this time it was just okay. All the sides are pretty big portions. The service was a little slow but they were busy. Before our tour of Amish Country, we stopped by Hometown Kitchen to pick up some sausage & egg breakfast sandwiches, hot chocolate, and their homemade raisin bread to go. The service was quick and friendly. I saw many locals dining here which seems like the go to spot for them for breakfast. The sandwich was huge, I ate half for breakfast and saved the other half for lunch. The sausage is not the flat brown patties we are used to but rather more like a hunk of thick meatloaf. It wasn't bad but seemed a bit on the plainer side. Everything seemed home made and was highly recommended by travel blogs. Don't expect much from the wait staff. We have our favorites but most of the staff seem preoccupied at best. Food comes pretty fast, even when they are packed to the gills. They are very efficient. Must try: Strawberry jam they keep on the table. Their own homemade bread and rolls. The Best chicken croquettes I've ever tasted (very rich). One of the best chicken pot pies around. Yum Mash with Gravy. AMPLE PORTIONS - the way it should be. The best cole slaw around. They make just about everything good. One day the wife said "hey, why don't we go to the Poconos for labor day weekend". And I thought sure why not! I love it up there (despite once being called a terrorist at a bar by some yokle, but that's a story for another review one day). Turns out when my wife said the Poconos, she meant Amish country. And, as it goes with our dependencies with modern day technology, you'll never really know where you're going until you get there. And for us, "there", was Atglen, PA. Where Hometown Kitchen in nearby Quarryville, was the only game in town. And thank whatever gods the Amish pray to, it was a good one! With diner style fare, this is as good as it could get I would imagine. The bread was so good! Waffles, biscuits, home fries, even the chicken nuggets... it all tasted... different!! I guess this is how food without hormones or chemical additives is supposed to taste? And if this was just the food at the local diner, it's no wonder the Amish never leave their community. My wife passed last year. I was the cook of the household, but there's no point in creating hearty meals at home anymore. However, I try to treat myself to a good hot meal now and then. You can't beat the Hometown Kitchen for true fresh from scratch meals. I just had the best meatloaf dinner there and I had leftovers for the next day. The best meatloaf I have ever had and I make a mean meatloaf myself. Two big thick slices covered with smooth brown gravy. The mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy without a lump. Delicious. The coleslaw tasted much like my own. Unfortunately I did not save room for dessert. My Amish server was sweet and attentive. This is not Amish tourist food that rules Lancaster's hot spots. We came late in the evening and so they were out of the two things I wanted, but I persevered and ordered the chicken pot pie, which is not the way the rest of America does it, but it was good. It's basically a thick chicken noodle soup poured out into a plate. I had a side of cole slaw ;which was good and sweet) and mashed potatoes because the vegetable of the day was canned green beans. We sent the french fries back because they were underdone, and instead of giving us new fries, they simply through them back in the oil fryer. They were returned to us cooked, but greasy. My wife got the chicken fingers which tasted like the frozen ones you get at BJs, and my barbecued meatballs were unremarkable and drenched in barbecue sauce. The noodles were unremarkable and the cole slaw was below average. The "home-made" peach pie tasted like the peach filling was poured from a can. Totally disappointed. This place is solid Amish. So if you go, be prepared that you might be the only non-Amish in there. This is sort of the endearing part of this place. We walked in all loud, from the Stratsburg train, in full pajamas (came from the Santa train) and it was like the needle stopped on the record and everyone looked at us. We calmed ourselves down and stayed. The food is comfort food and all seemed pretty good. The kids sliders were probably a little dry and my son's hamburger was only okay. But, the rest of our meals were very enjoyable and service was great. It is a great choice for the experience of eating in a true Amish spot.
