I'm so disappointed. I had this place bookmarked because they were supposed to serve large premium skewers using real metal skewers. But this turned out not to be the case. Only two skewers came on metal. I went for an assortment of skewers and nothing really stood out. The lamb one was $3 and was the best of the bunch, but also nothing impressive. Most of the lamb was fat. It had nice lamb flavor since there was so much fat on it, but the seasoning was lacking. I was hoping for some spiciness, which was not there. Nothing else I tried ended up being good. The chicken heart was tough. The chicken feet were really dried up and difficult to eat. The lamb tendon was cold. Most items, even though they supposedly came freshly off the grill, seemed only lukewarm. And everything was seasoned the same way, that is to say underseasoned and without any of the nice cumin flavor you get from the stands. In the end, it ended up costing me around $14 to try seven skewers. The price wasn't bad, but the skewers were nothing special. My family and I went on a late Saturday night. The restaurant was packed! We were given a number; for a table of 6, the wait was only about 10-15 minutes. The space can get extremely tight, and we were seated very close to the other tables. I didn't mind that because the food looked like it was worth it. The restaurant is located by the big parking lot in Flushing. Also, at night, you can find street parking easily. The entrance looks extremely sketchy but the inside is clean and modern. My biggest complaint for this place was how inattentive the wait staff were. Most of them speak Mandarin and English, some might have a hard time with English. In order to get their attention, you must press the "call button" mounted to the wall by your table. Even then, it took a long time for them to come to us. Also, we placed a big order, so we were missing many items. When we asked them about it, they thought we were trying to add more to the order. Tip: double check the receipt when you get it. They overcharged us. But the food was pretty amazing. TRY THE OYSTERS - they're the size of your hand, fat and juicy, and flavored amazingly. They are pricey though - $7 a piece. It's definitely worth it, in my opinion. As for the skewers, they were all tender and flavorful, my favorite was the Mongolian beef and beef skin. We also ordered one noodle soup with vermicelli noodles cooked with clams and shrimp soup, and another with rice noodles with fish balls and veggies. For unusual skewers that you might not be able to get elsewhere, I recommend their ham sausage - this is so good and their raw beef, it's interesting to try - you can dip it into this sour/vingear-y soy sauce or eaten raw, both ways taste good. Their hot dishes are just as good as their skewers and their portions are good too! The grilled chicken skeleton is sweet and sour, love eating it with the peanuts and cilantro that's in there. The pan-fried stinky tofu does not have the strong scent you would think, honestly I don't even smell the scent majority of the time and it's very crispy but soft inside. The spicy cumin lotus root is crunchy and flavorful. Also remember to get their changle bing fan aka ice rice, it's really good and does not disappoint! Come here if you're hungry late at night. The skewers are either a hit or miss but the ones that hit really hit. My favorites are the lamb, chicken, and enoki mushroom skewers. If you love seafood, and meat on a stick, THIS IS THE PLACE. We went here to celebrate Father's day at like 12 am and the place was pretty packed (and they don't take reservations). It's a tight space to have dinner really, but I think the food was really worth it. If you come, you MUST MUST order the oysters and the 'steak' on the stick. The steak was cooked to perfection, and I could have had 18 more and I'm not even a big meat lover. The average price of the meats were $1.50 per stick that were seasoned in spice and lots of different flavorings. Came here with a few friends for dinner on a weeknight and we ordered the skewers along with some rice dishes. The first thing we noticed was that one meat skewer cost $3-4 and only had a few pieces of tiny meat on them. We ordered some vegetable skewers after that and again, each stick only had a few small pieces of vegetable on them. This place is definitely overpriced considering how small of an amount they give you on each skewer stick. The food itself is not bad tasting but not particularly amazing in any way especially for those prices. In addition, it also took us a while to flag down a server to our table since every time they said they would come to us, they never did. Here, the Xinjiang special lamb skewers served on the special root were the best skewers I have ever had in the United States, Hands down. Only Chinese style skewers that can compare I had in China. Both the meat, and the special skewers made of the Chinese Tamarisk tree are both important ingredients for this excellent skewer. The Squid here is fantastic as well, with other items (chicken heart, regular lamb, beef, chicken gizzard, beef tendon) all being very good, but nothing special. The pork belly was also good, but I feel as though, just to reiterate, you don't experience coming here if you don't have the special Xinjiang skewers. The enoki mushrooms here were served not on a skewer, but on a plate which was different from expected but good nonetheless. We ordered skewers, the skewer hotpot and the spicy stir fry clams. Skewers: very good! We ordered beef, chicken, chicken wings, squid legs and fish tofu. They were all very good, no complaints. Skewer hot pot: this is where I took off the 1 star. It's a cool concept to have a hot pot version of skewers, but I prefer the skewer to be grilled. The broth lacks flavor, and things kept falling into the soup base as we try to take the skewer out. It will be a pass for me. For $30, I would rather get more skewers. Spicy stir fry clams: I wouldn't pay $14 (I think) for this dish again. It has a slime texture to it, and the clams itself is very small, too small for my taste. It also lacks flavor. Stars off for the service, really. Tucked into a row of Korean beauty spas and clothing stores, you'll find Friendship BBQ, which replaced a dessert spot. The decor is super modern and surprisingly, the crowd is pretty large even in the AM. But I guess I should've expected it since this is literally the perfect after-party food. We arrived closer to midnight with a party of six. I was told that the wait would be around an hour and that if we were willing, we could just bring two extra chairs to a four seater. We agreed but that didn't go to well due to the proximity of all the tables. We literally felt like we were sitting on top of the other patrons. Luckily, after our struggle to fit into the too small table, a server approached us and told us that a six-seater had just opened up. I was relieved that I wouldn't have to go through the meal doing a battle of the elbows. It was so difficult to get the staffs' attention. I would press the call button and no one would come by for about five minutes before I had to wave a server down. The call button obviously doesn't serve its purpose. The place was completely packed so I tried to cut them some slack. But unfortunately, we didn't get a couple of items we ordered and had to ask multiple times about them, only to be charged twice for the item when it came time to get the check. Good thing we checked the receipt before paying. The food is decent and the seasoning is the type used by skewer carts spread all over Flushing. So if you enjoy those skewers, I think you would enjoy the food here. Meat & Seafood BBQ typically will cost you $1.5-3 each depending on how many you get. They also sell their skewers in 10 to 30-count quantities. Just keep in mind that the portions for each skewer are larger than you may think! And for those of you considering just buying a skewer from one of those roadside stands, let me tell you that every bite was well worth the price!! My friend and I ended up ordering Shrimp, their Signature Xinjiang Lamb Skewers, Chicken, Shrimp, and Squid Skewers. All skewers came out piping hot and ready to eat. Lamb skewers blew me away: huge chunks of meat sizzling in a Cumin/Szechuan - like spice rub, delicious and probably downed that skewer in less than a minute. Young, energetic, vibrant servers knowledgeable in the menu items, another plus to this visit. Spicy crawfish 3.5/5 Mundane crawfish stirfry. I would save my appetitie for the real thing. The star of the show was the Xinjiang Lamb skewers 5/5, with huge chunks of lamb and seasoned to perfection. Forget the bamboo sticks, they wrapped these meat cubes in tree branch which might be for the show, or might help accenturate the flavor of the meat. I have to say, the execution of the lamb was superb, big chunks of lamb can easily mask the flavor and be too gamey for my taste, but their secret to this perfection is zero gamey, yet soft chewy, perfect for my palate. Sadly, Chinese BBQ is kind of hard to come by in NYC (though there are some in Manhattan Chinatown that are decent), so Flushing is one of your best bets for getting a quality experience. I love the cart skewers in Flushing, and I have to note off the bat that I don't think this place beats my favorite cart. However, that's not necessarily the point, as it's a much different experience being able to sit down, relax, and receive service. BBQ here is a not a particularly quick meal, and it's probably better this way. Orders come by themselves, so your meal could end up disjointed, but the benefit is that everything is hot (careful) when you get it. The flavors here, including their "spicy," are not super strong. At the same time, it's not like everything tastes the same here, which I do think is the primary pitfall of some other BBQ places. The meat is also very tender, which is one of the more impressive parts of their skewers... as much as I like cart skewers, they're helped a lot by their selection of very fatty meat chunks, so one could argue it's easier for them to make the meat tasty. The special lamb is probably worth the price compared to their 3 per order one, as that was the best skewer of my visit. The lamb and beef are both solid... I actually like their beef more than I usually like beef in skewers, but both of these skewers are on the smaller side. Chicken heart and gizzards were both solid, so I'd recommend those if you like them. The pork belly/enoki mushrooms were okay, as well as the pork intestine... maybe not something I'd strongly recommend? I'd probably be willing to get everything again, in addition to exploring the rest of the menu if I were to come again, and I have confidence that their menu is pretty strong across the board. I think prices overall are also very fair for you're getting. Service is pretty great here, and they have the button at each table you can press if you need anything. This is probably a place where being able to speak Chinese helps out immensely (even when it comes to finding this place, as I believe "Friendship" on Yelp is probably the result of someone translating the restaurant name), as my entire restaurant experience was conducted in Chinese. Their menu does have English translations for everything but the specials though, so I presume one would be fine speaking only English too. Honestly, the hardest part of coming here is that you'll likely have to pass by skewer carts on your way there and back, and so whether it's a temptation to eat early or a feeling of regret afterwards that you didn't spend your money there before, all I'm saying is no one's going to judge you for inflating your skewer count. read more

This is a very decent Chinese BBQ place in Flushing area. It gets packed fast during dining hours, and they won't seat ppl until everyone is there. The oysters and giant clams were fresh & delicious. Was brought here by a friend who highly recommended it over Dunhuang. Appearance wise it was really nice. Better looking date spot for sure and their skewers weren't bad either. Something just didn't feel right. Could've been the decor which was made to cater to the younger/more american crowd. It could've been the selection of store bought drinks (none made in-house, even the soy-bean drink came in a bottle). Or maybe it was the Ikea-candle powered "grill" used to keep the meat warm. I've came here twice in the past month to difference experiences. I loved the restaurant the first time due to a combination of great service and delicious food, meanwhile, the second experience was bit of a let down due to the lackluster service, although the food was still pretty good. Here are some of the items we've tried: Spicy Hot Pot with 30 skewers - the first time we came, I've asked the waiter whether we can substitute any items and he said we can substitute anything we want with the caveat that the items in group A would be pricier. We ended up not doing any substitutions so that we can try all of 13 items. We found out that we only like a few of the items, such as the tripe, beef, quail eggs and the fish tofu, all of which were in Group A. When we came the second time, we asked if we can only get items from group A and pay extra if necessary. However, the waiter emphatically said no substitutions. It was a bit annoying that the two waiters were contradicting each other, particularly since the menu has listed the a la carte prices for each skewers. Overall, this dish is a great deal, however most of the items were just not very good, particularly the corn (they use the starchy kind of corn and is just mushy), the seaweed knot and the vegetable rolls (which is just scallions wrapped in tofu skin). We ended up throwing out 1/3 of the skewers, which was a waste. I don't think I would order this again unless they allow you to tailor it as you wish and just charge a la carte prices. Grilled skewers: Xinjiang Special Lamb - the best skewer here! It is the most expensive meat skewer, but oh so worth it. It comes on a gigantic tree branch looking skewer and the meat is seasoned to perfection. Moreover, I love the perfect balance of fattiness of the lamb. This is hand's down my favorite lamb skewer in Flushing. Gizzard - second favorite, although they ran out of it the second time we came. The gizzards were grilled to the perfect amount of chewiness. Other skewers we've tried included the squid, fish tofu, sausage, pork skin and beef tendon, all of which were well seasoned and cooked. We've also tried the stir fried string beans, which was super salty for my taste, but the rest of my group loved it and finished the whole dish. The price here is reasonable with each skewer averaged around $1.5, which is what the typical skewer trucks parked around Flushing charges. It is a great deal to be able to sit in a restaurant and enjoy delicious skewers for the same price as you would get from food trucks. The only drawdown has been the inconsistent service. As I mentioned, our first experience was impeccable, the servers came by to check on us, refilled our water glasses, made sure we cooked the hot pot properly, etc. In comparison, our second experience was extremely lacking. The hot pot over flowed and spilled the boiling hot soup all over the table. We had to flag down the waiter to give us extra napkins. We helped our waiter to clean up the mess, but he just left the dirty napkins on the table, which was a bit of a turn off. Moreover, it was difficult to get their attention to refill our water, as well as to order extra items. Perhaps they were short-handed during our second visit. It was late on a Saturday night, heading home, driving in to Flushing for a fun Asian meal after seeing a show in Manhattan, probably a bit after 10:30 and I knew of a Korean barbecue/hot pot place that I had gone to extremely late before in the past. It turns out they closed their kitchen at 10 PM. They shooed us away and we googled and found another place, a hot pot place across the street that was reporting as still open. We went there and they told us unfortunately the last seating was 10:30 PM. And it was now 10:50. They directed us to Friendship bbq. After two rejections, it was a pleasure to be welcomed into this busy late night establishment. Great smells were coming out of the place. Our mouths were watering. The service was prompt and attentive. The menus were a little bit challenging because you operated them on your phone. So you could look at the items in English, but after you deposited them in your shopping cart, the English descriptions disappeared. So if you ordered a bunch of things, and we did, it's hard to review what you've already ordered. Anyhow we ordered a bunch of stuff and They started bringing out many skewers. We had Mongolian beef, wagyu beef, beef throat, chicken, squid, tofu skin. It was a mountain of protein in short order. The problem is every single dish was seasoned exactly the same. Extremely spicy and just the same flavor on a different protein. After the meal was done we found out that we could've asked for it less spicy. But it was really challenging to eat this stuff. We also had a bowl of tripe. It's not for the faint of heart. It's amazing how similar squid is to tripe. Very rubbery. And it too was incredibly spicy. We were thankful for the bowls of white rice and free cucumber water to try to cool us down. But my nose was running and my eyes were tearing (and you only get one napkin in each). I gave the place three stars, because they do what they do. It's late night, it's Chinatown, it's fun, it's unusual. I'm not going to hit them with one or two stars because the food was very outside the box for me. But I probably should have asked for help ordering. I think perhaps some noodles and some soup might have varied the flavor. Making a meal of skewers, in this place, they are all pretty much going to taste the same. So you have to make some other well-thought-out choices. We did try the bone marrow. Which was very interesting. It is about 8 inches of bovine shin bone split in half. The marrow is very greasy. They give you some toast wedges to move it around. The bones are very hot. I found the best way for me to eat it was to take a napkin to hold the very hot end of the bone and then tilt it into my rice and then scrape all the fatty marrowy material into the rice. It was interesting, but a bit too greasy for my taste so I would not order that one again. All in all, I might try it again. There are not a lot of late night options in Flushing Chinatown anymore. I guess that changed with Covid. If this place didn't seat us, we would've just driven home. read more
