Seated at the bar, sweating in front of the cooking area, watching as people who came in after get seated. How have I never reviewed From Scratch before? When I lived downtown it was my go-to for burgers and bread pudding, but everything on their menu is solid. The fries are especially delicious! The location is great--right behind the Galavan Center, so super convenient for after community concerts and dances. And they have lovely outdoor seating. My favorite is that they home make their hamburger buns, and you can really taste the difference. I've never gone wrong at From Scratch! read more

Dropped in for dinner on Saturday evening. We have eaten here in past, but it has been a while. We were quickly seated and were provided a nice table by the window. We have always enjoyed how fresh everything is and the details that go into what the make. We started with an order of the Wood Fire Bread. This is great starter. It's a sourdough loaf and comes with cultured butter and apple jam on the side. For our meals we choose the Tri-Tip Sandwich and. The Pastrami Burger. Both come with Fries. The food was great and everything was add and cooked fresh. The only reason for the 1 Star deduction was the timing of our meal. When placing our order, we specifically requested our server delay the main course and bring out the appetizer (Wood Fire bread first.)This way, we wouldn't be rushed and could enjoy some time together; enjoying a drink, conversation and our starter. The gentleman helping us assured us by saying "absolutely no problem, this is what we usually do." Well usually, doesn't mean always, so it's just life and we were the anomaly, I guess. Literally, one person dropped off the Wood Fire Bread and within 30 seconds, our server was placing our meals in front of us. (First world problems - I realize this and it's not the end of the world). If anything, it hurt them in the long run, as we never had the time to order another round of drinks. Love this place! It is not a large restaurant but from any table you have a pretty good view of the kitchen where you can see pizzas made from scratch and all kinds of meals being prepared. The scratch burger was large and filling but the real winner here was the brisket sandwich. Their salads look amazing so I will definitely be having one of those next time. This place wasn't really my choice to go to but it was decided by my work team as a place we should all meet up at just because from looking at the menu, there were items that met the criteria for some of our team who had a more restrictive diet... so there were about 15- 20 in the party. The first thing we noticed and had a bit of a laugh at, was sauce on the ceiling... not a big deal, but not really a good sign either. The bad news.. is no one.. I mean no one had a good meal. Something was wrong with everyone's dish. The people who had bread included were shocked how rock hard stale it was. Those that ordered pizza didn't eat it all or just avoided the crust... He wanted to seat us in the corner by the kitchen. When we asked if we could sit somewhere else he'd begrudgingly complied. I just went to From Scratch for the first time and it was really very lovely. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was on top of things from the second we walked in the door. The decor inside was modern and rustic and really well done. The drinks were really great. My buddy got the house red and it was very nice. The food was just exceptional. We got the beef stroganoff and the From Scratch burger. I was a little hesitant to get the beef stroganoff but my goodness it was one of the best I've ever had. I've lived in Germany and traveled all over Europe and this one holds up big time. Well done. The burger was also super nice and on point. This place is a must try for my and I'll be coming back. As a note, you cannot have a drink outside due to some weird laws in Utah. This used to be one of my favorite downtown restaurants after recently discovering it a few years back. However, they must be under new management because the place was not the same. The food quality didn't suffer as much as the service. I waited 40 minutes for the check while being mildly entertained by our waitress and her coworkers (including the cooking staff) while they took selfies in the back room, which I think they think is more hidden than it actually is, while her phone charged from a plug on the ceiling. It was chaos. We ended up asking a different waitress passing by to get our check and were finally out the door. The food wasn't the same and I'm sad that I won't be going back. read more

I made a reservation ahead of time, just in case. It was a Saturday and we ate around 5:30. It was not busy at all, however, there was a big art festival going on in the city, so I imagine that may have played a role. Either way, I always recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you can, especially on weekends. I love the casual vibe, and open kitchen concept of From Scratch! From where we were sitting, we could see right into the kitchen and the wood-fire grill where they make pizza. There is indoor and outdoor seating available her during the warmer months of the year. I ordered a salad with Salmon, it was very good I nearly finished the dish, but the Sweet Potato Fries won me over. There were cooked perfectly with a good crunch. My husband ordered the Chicken Alfredo and he finished his dish. The portion sizes were perfect. I can appreciate a restaurant that doesn't overfeed patrons. The service was good and quick. I think we were in and out in about an hour. I would definitely dine here again and recommend it to visiting friends. read more

Found this place after my Oath ceremony as I was looking for some modern American food to have lunch/ celebrate my citizenship with my partner and it's safe to assume that From Scratch did not disappoint! The restaurant is a little hidden if you are driving but there are plenty of street parking spots around the block. Biggest tip is to carpool or walk, if you had already parked somewhere downtown. For a Tuesday lunch, the restaurant was not super busy although out r server did mentioned that during dinner/brunch time wait times can go up to 45 minutes or so. Service was amazing, our server gave us plenty of time to check out the menu (even though I had already browsed a bit online on the way there haha) and even gave us recommendations for our sides since the restaurant is more known for its pizzas and sandwiches and not so much for their burgers. I ordered the Bleu Cheese burger with bacon a side of house fries and the famous UT fry sauce. I'm not one to eat burgers often but it is safe to say I give it a 10/10. It was cooked perfectly and the fries were crispy. My partner opted for the house burger with (also) a side of fries. He was happy dancing with his choice. We shared a Cesar salad, it was very fresh and just enough veggies/greens for us to not feel SO guilty about eating burgers on a Tuesday haha. Our friends are staying at the Little American so we wanted somewhere casual and family friendly (we brought our infant) to meet them. This was a great option! I'm giving four stars just because it's a bit on the loud side, I didn't like my pizza all that much, and (weird but real complaint) the chairs were pretty uncomfortable. Like my butt was numb by the end. So, not somewhere to bring grandma. I LOVED my pomegranate lemondrop - ice cold and the perfect mix of sweet and sour. We had to get the bread appetizer and it did not disappoint. The apple spread was so good on it! The people who got burgers and sandwiches were practically licking their plates, they loved them so much. I got the sausage pizza and it was good it way too cheesy. About half the amount of cheese and it would have been a great dinner, but because of the intense amount of cheese it was difficult to eat because the crust couldn't stand up to the gooey topping. This place had potential, but failed miserably. Let's start with cleanliness... to be honest, I saw the counter and almost walked out, but decided that maybe they were in the middle of a clean up. They weren't. There were containers of old bread, bottles that had previously held sauces that had dried to the sides. Crumbs and dirt littered the counter space. This is also where they put the fulfilled orders for the servers to pick up. Now the food. I ordered the chicken sandwich and asked for no onions and the mustard aioli on the side. It came out with onions and DRENCHED in sauce. I asked for ketchup for my soggy sweet potato fries. It was rancid and thoroughly expired. The sourdough was toasted so hard that it sliced the roof of my mouth, causing it to bleed. I was waiting for my server to return so I could tell her the order wasn't quite right, but she never returned until it was time for payment. In the meantime, I chose to remove the onions myself and scrape the aioli onto the plate. The bread was too dry to eat, so I decided to eat the grilled chicken and tomatoes from the sandwich. It tasted odd, but I assumed it was the aioli I perhaps hadn't fully removed. When the server came to bring me my check, she never asked how it was. It should have been obvious from the uneaten bread, sauce, onions and fries. But here's the thing... people that don't ask don't care. Approximately 4 hours later I was sick. Sleep on the bathroom floor sick. Still am. Pretty sure it was the one bite of ketchup, although that chicken tasted funny and I blamed it on the sauce so who knows. The photo I'm including is of the dirty counter. That completed plate of food waiting to be delivered sat there for 10 minutes, then I left. He helps me, among other things, with mobility tasks like retrieving things that I drop. The manager working that night approached me as I went to go sit with my friend and asked me for my "card" showing he was a service dog. They are not legally required, so I told him no, and tried to explain what the ADA rules are for having service animals in an establishment. He also stated he "also has an ESA" which I tried to explain is not the same as a service animal, and that service animals do not require papers. He then proceeded to interrupt me, raise his voice, make a scene in front of the other guests, accuse me of buying my dog's vest (another thing the ADA does not require) off of Amazon, and threatened to call the police. I brought up the rules on the ADA website of what you can and cannot ask, went to the host's desk and demanded to speak to the owner. By that point the manager backed down and seated me. He did not make eye contact, offer to comp my meal, serve or speak to me, for the rest of the evening. (Otherwise, the wait staff was lovely and knowledgeable about service dog issues. We each left our waitress a $20 tip after taking 20% off our meal.) I will also mention that my dog was incredibly well-behaved the entire time I was there. I'm writing because I feel this is unacceptable. I would like to know that the restaurant is taking action to make sure this doesn't happen to a service dog handler again. I would also like an apology. read more

I tried to hate you--after all I made a reservation well in advanced and you stuck me in the back literally across from the cook line. I seethed as I listened to the clank of the pans, the occasional ding of the bell for waitstaff to pick up a meal quickly, the barking of the chefs, and the clanging of clean plates being brought to the line. I tried to hate you--after all, you have only a few wines on the menu. I tried to hate you--you provide metal chairs with thin wood seats, you sent a wildly enthusiastic waiter to my table, you... But then I got it: You are who you are here at From Scratch. Nothing pretentious. Nothing fake. Real and wonderful. Wine: a red blend that was simple and enjoyable. Appetizer: Risotta Cake--creamy texture inside with a crispy outside. And the roasted red pepper sauce brought it to a whole other level. I'm still have mixed feeling about whether the arugula added anything, but I could have easily avoided it but taking it off the top. Main Course: Beef Stroganoff--excellent al dente noodles, with tender beef sliced very thinly. (Thank you! I don't want huge chewy chunks.) The sauce thankfully wasn't a gravy, it was a light sauce that didn't overpower everything else. Perfect. I'm not a huge mushroom fan, but I felt that this dish could have used more. I mean, it's a key ingredient for the dish. They were thinly sliced and I wouldn't even have known they were there if I didn't go searching. Guests who love mushrooms, may be disappointed. Patrons who are okay with them, may still be disappointed. Dessert: Tiramisu (to go)--enjoying it now for breakfast with a cup of coffee as I write this. As breakfast or dessert, the tiramisu did not disappoint at all. I tried to hate you--but for all the wrong reasons that I now appreciate. I still didn't love my table location, but to be honest, I would actually sit at the counter next time so I could watch all the bread and pizza come out of the brick over, to watch the chefs authentically prepare beautiful meals, to listen to the friendly hostess greet all they guest as if they are the most important ones that have ever walked in, and to enjoy the different personalities of the waitstaff. We came here on a Friday night based on previous reviews and the fact that it is walkable and in a cute area. Unfortunately we left a little disappointed. We were seated at a table by the door, which ended up being very cold. Which, alone would have not been a problem. The server was less than attentive. We ordered drinks and waited forever to get them. I am usually very patient and I hate commenting on wait staff because you never know if they were understaffed or if the server was just having an off day, but this service was definitely poor. The waitress appeared irritated with each interaction. We all ordered burgers which were pretty good. The regular fries left a lot to be desired. The sweet potato fries were great though. I mean, the picture of my burger should really speak for itself. From Scratch is your classic American restaurant that offers a wide variety of food items to please the whole fam. These include pastas, pizzas, soups, salads and some of the best dang burgers. I personally ordered the egg burger and besides it being nearly impossible to eat because it was chucked full of delicious toppings (the best kind of problem to have), it was delicious. I tried multiple plates- the margarita pizza, beef stroganoff, along with some appetizer and I was honestly pleased every bite I took. I don't feel like you can go wrong here.
