I take long road trips the last few summers and explore different states for fly fishing, since I started fishing.3 years ago. Front range angler fly shop was on my radar again after stopping in last year and being impressed by the helpfulness of the staff. Jackson, at the front desk was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable when I asked questions about guided trips and the area, that I had to book a day wading with Amber.(He also is a natural salesman and I had to buy new glasses!! ) I book women guides whenever a fly shop has one available and after speaking with Amber, couldn't wait to go fish with her. Amber was so Friendly, personable, extremely knowledgeable about the rivers and History of the area, having grown up in Boulder and fished for years. She is a natural teacher, fun, and very encouraging and supportive. And best of all- she put me on fish! I even caught a rare Cutthroat .. and lots of Brookies and browns. We were able to avoid the "people hatch"on a busy July day, in the Rocky National park, which was an accomplishment! A high-quality fly shop with a large collection of tackle, flies, clothing and accessories ranging from mid-level suitable for ambitious beginners to ultra-expert with prices to match. Expert staff who can discuss fine nuances but will spend time with casual hackers like me as well. I attended Ben McGee's 3/10 Applied Entomology session and learned a lot but have one major qualm. Much of the material was in the form of Powerpoint slides with text and/or insect photos projected on a screen. Attendees were allowed and encouraged to photograph the screen from our seats, which I did for many slides. But it would have been more useful and convenient for Nevis to print the slide deck as a handout. That way we would have had a more organized takeaway and could have taken notes on the handout rather than having to integrate our notes and photos afterwards. read more

Our party of six had an outstanding time on our 1/2 day trip with guides Christian and Jacob. We were all novices and the guides were helpful with getting us started on basic techniques. There was plenty of communication prior to the trip from the lead guide so any questions we had were answered thoroughly and we felt confident about the trip by the time we met up on the day of. We caught a total of six fish so for these first-timers that was a successful day. They took us to two different spots and kept us fishing even though the weather did not cooperate with us for the first hour or so. They would scout out "good" spots and move us around a bit when they thought it would be helpful. They constantly rotated around to each person to check on us. They described the habitat and behavior of the fish we were looking for and if I do go fly fishing again I feel I have a good basic knowledge of the sport. All four adults in the group agreed it was a fun trip and a worthwhile vacation adventure! I would like to add we had a young teen and a 7-y/o with us and the guides were very attentive and helpful with the youngsters in the group. read more

An awesome trip! I have caught tons of trout in PA, but never one over 15". Plus, I could not throw a fly rod to save my life. Dawson had me throwing wet and dry flies in no time. He netted (and released!) 13 Rainbow's between 14"-20", most 16"-18". I also lost about 4 more, broke a big boy off (my fault) and missed many more good hits. We had a half-day outing with our guide Ian, and what a fun, educational time! We are a first-timer and a novice, and Ian was gracious enough to help us learn some of the fundamentals and keep the fish landing in the net! We started out from the shop after getting fitted for boots and waders and followed Ian up to a spot in Boulder Creek (guide's choice), up the canyon. Across the ~4 hour experience, we worked our way up the creek catching a brown trout and brook trout (lost a rainbow! :( ), then looped back to our starting point to finish up (3.5 hours the wiser under Ian's guidance!). All in all, a nice experience for anyone interested in the sport and getting some time outdoors. Certainly recommend for anyone fitting that description! read more

At the outset, he explained what we were going to do and why, offered me the chance to ask any questions, and then got us right into fishing. He answered all of my questions along the way, switched out flies, untangled my line, gently corrected my technique when necessary, and netted fish after fish after fish when I successfully hooked them. Unimpressed. We took the weekend to fly out to Boulder from Chicago to go fly fishing. I wanted my wife and daughter to experience something fun and outdoorsy. I was not impressed with the experience which for me was the biggest bummer because I wanted my wife and daughter to have a good first experience. I initially requested a two day guided fly fishing tour but cancelled for the second day halfway through the first. Everything was blah from the beginning of the day. In my opinion a guided tour should have a tiny bit more care put into it. I'm not certain of the relative expense, you judge for yourself: $500 a day seems like a good income for an outfit; $500 x 30 day = $15,000 revenue for the month. 4 guides can generate $60,000 for a shop in a month. You'd think with that kind of potential, more care would be put into the process. Adam picked us up at the hotel, which was nice. I think what would have been smarter is if Adam would have stopped at the car wash before picking us up. The car was a mess and looked like it hadn't been cleaned for quite some time. For $20 buck he could have made a nicer first impression. He sort of seemed like a burn out the entire day, not up to the task at hand. The initial stop was at a national park quite a way out of Boulder. We went to a "River" call "Big" Thompson, which was more like a stream. The scenery was very nice but a bad choice for a fishing spot because no one wants to feel like they are fishing in a stream. There were no fish there so we got back in the car and drove to Boulder Creek. An ok fishing spot but not that big of a deal either. It was near a busy highway and the traffic noise was off putting. We caught four very very small fish at Boulder Creek (might have been at the most 3 inches long). I'm not sure if it was Adam's communication style, or the choices of fishing spots, or the lackluster effort he made but the day was very, very, very unimpressive. If I did a guided fly fishing day again, I would shop 5-10 guides and have them email me full itineraries. I would choose the best and have phone conversations to gauge their personalities; Due the seem burned out, high, enthused, etc. I figured with the positive reviews for Front Range, I was in good hands, but that wasn't the case. I like fly fishing but the next time I do it, it will likely be with a friend that does it and after some more location research. You shouldn't pay for a sub-par guide. The better alternative would be to watch a few Youtube video's on fly fishing, stop at Walmart for basic equipment and Google beautiful fishing spots. 90% of the fun is being with people you like and love in a beautiful outdoors. I wish Front Range Angler's continued success but more important I wish you a nice experience with your limited time and resources. read more

A fantastic day on the Big Thompson! Fished the Big Thompson on a full day guided trip with Tim Neering. Tim provided the instructions and flies for an epic day catching browns and rainbows all day. I was visiting a friend who recently moved to Boulder for a few days and we both wanted to try fly fishing for the first time! All good signs pointed towards Front Range Anglers and boy, were we not disappointed. I booked the half day guided trip over the phone with the nicest guy ever for me and my pal. This includes waders, boots, rods and guide (Adam) for 4 hours. We met early Sat morning at the shop and drove to our fishing location. Adam gave us a verbal introduction and some safety tips before we headed down to the water to practice casting, setting etc. After practicing for a few minutes, my friend caught a fish!!! It was a baby trout that was released immediately but SO GRATIFYING. I caught my first fish a few mins later. We moved spots about 3 times looking for bigger fish but kept catching little ones. Adam is extremely knowledgeable with finding fish, and is a very good teacher. I kept losing my flies and nymphs, and he kept patiently fixing my line. This was an insight into how fly fishing can be very detail oriented, and made me appreciate having a guide that much more. My friend and I were a little surprised at how beautiful the hand made flies are, and how lovely it feels to stand in cold water casting a line over and over. We had a fantastic day! I would highly recommend this business. Scheduling, preparation with licenses and gear, fishing, and follow up were all extremely professional. It is obvious that the guides really love their work and are dedicated to making their guests feel comfortable and enjoy their day....no matter how each person defines a fun day. My daughter and I tagged along on my husband's birthday fishing trip and the guides made sure we all had a custom experience that made each person happy. I just enjoyed hanging out on shore and really had no desire to fish but they honored my request to find a "pretty place" and they even made sure there was a bathroom, cell service, and plenty of water available. One of my daughters wanted to participate for a little while and they were patient and encouraging and also allowed her to take a break and be done when she had enough. My husband is a fairly experienced fisherman but still felt like he learned quite a bit. He really enjoyed the experience immensely. I would definitely do this again and would recommend it to anyone! Steve McLaughlin and his team at FRA are fantastic. Their guide service is hands down the best in Boulder. I have fished numerous times with Ben, who is one of the smartest, most upstanding guys one could hope to spend a day on the river with. I often stop by the shop to catch up with Zach, Bryce or whoever happens to be there that day. They hold great member days and clinics that introduce beginners and seasoned trout bums to everything from fly tying to casting techniques. Regarding gear... they do a great job curating products from both known and emerging brands... I never leave empty handed! The experience with Alex was incredible! This was my first and only guided trip since I usually find my own way when traveling, however, I only had a couple days an wanted to maximize my fishing. I called FRA a couple of times to inquire and I was always met with a friendly greeting and conversation. I knew what type of fishing I wanted to do and the type environment to fish. Guides have many locations they use and each client is different. I wanted to experience Colorado and not just catch fish, but to experience a location that got away from cars and noise of a city. My guide was Alex and what an exceptional young man. worldly, passionate and energetic. He understood that I wanted to experience Colorado fly fishing and he knew just the place. The trip was a combination of steep hiking, picturesque forest, good conversation with the culmination of a high mountain lake, just what I was looking for. The journey alone was worth it to me and catching fish would be a bonus. We set up and began to fish, nothing at first, change a fly, a few small ones, another change and we were on!. Beautiful mountain lake, with the mourning sun glistening off the water with a slight breeze and the most beautiful cutthroats I had ever seen. We fished a couple locations and caught fish all day. For me, Alex made the trip. He was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, but most of all, he is a great person. Even if we had only caught a few fish, I would have still called it a successful trip.
