Frontier Burger is a throwback to 1958 when Jim Hasslocher started a chain of burger joints that morphed into the iconic Jim's Restaurants. If you're looking for just a burger you will be off point. We wanted to try some of the other menu items for kicks. Their fried chicken is down home country good with a crispy batter. Their mini onion rings are super tasty. The grilled chicken wrap on a spinach tortilla was yummy. Their large chili was loaded with ground beef and it came with cheese and onions. Service is over the top, everybody here wants to help. What I like about Frontier Burger is that their burgers are so simple, it reminds me of those burgers I had in the 70's at those walk-up window burger stands. What's important about eating at a burger place that's not so corporate you're going to always get a better burger. For me, it's been over a year since a had a burger from a corporate chain and I mean; The Clown, The King, The Jack, The Daughter, or The Drive-threw. This place is owned by Jim's, a local restaurant chain. Before Jim Haslocker died, he envisioned a drive-thru burger stand, like the one that he originally opened up in Brackenridge Park decades ago. When you walk in, there's an air of nostalgia- the dining room is decorated like a southern down-home eatery. The old menu that used to hang in Brackenridge Park hangs on the wall, advertising 15 cent burgers. They don't have a lot of selection here- burgers and fries. The fries are crinkle cut, so they're crispy. However, they seemed to have run out of ketchup when we went, and nobody could be found to resupply. They do a swift drive-thru business- they have cones out in the parking lot to handle the traffic jams that come with the crowds. The dining room was packed, and I felt lucky to be able to get a table, and not have to eat standing up. The burger was nothing special. The bun was toasted, and not soggy. The meat was delicious, but under-seasoned. The toppings were fresh, but not exactly plentiful. They have a soda machine out in the dining room, so you can help yourself to refills. read more

First of all we spent over 50 dollars and most of it was wrong. Every time my husband pointed out it was wrong they fixed it although it was still wrong. Let's start with the positive: shoestring onion rings that taste like grandmas. Limemade made from actual limes instead of some kind of sprite concoction. Frontier Burger is laid out like a Whataburger, but with delicious Frontier Burger options. Make no mistake, Jim H., the longtime owner of Frontier Enterprises has delivered some of the best beef in San Antonio, because he essentially grew his own. Thus, the beef in these hamburgers is superior to any fast-food restaurant I've been to, in recent memory. I've never been a fan of the onion rings or the fries at Jim's. The good news is that the fries at Frontier Burger are delicious. I got to sample some of their signature thin-sliced onion rings, but I still think they are OK at best. Without sampling their shakes or pies, the flame grilled hamburgers here are a class act. Wanted to half and half my fries with onion rings as advised in other reviews but Blue the cashier said that has never been done so I decided to go with onion rings and eat fries off the other orders. Not a frou frou spot by any means, but if you like flame-kissed taste of Burger King burgers, then definitely check this place out. I've had the cheeseburger off the Kid's menu...assembled a little sloppily, but we all know that never affects the taste. It tasted okay...I'd give it between a 3 or 3.5. The chicken strips are tasty, it almost taste like carnival batter? It has a hint of sweetness to it (not bad) and it was pretty moist. I was surprisingly pleased with the chicken tenders. Their "Texas toast" was just toast though...nothing like Raising Cane's. While this place isn't the best burger place I'd go to, it still better than any fast food joint. Was expecting something really good but was very disappointed. After waiting a short time at the drive thru window I expected to receive a hot cheeseburger for my wait. And was disappointed to bite into a tasteless cold burger. Patty was barley past room temperature and all the veggies were cold. Fries were a little better, I love crinkle fries these were sitting around for little while... With a tad more salt and served fresh these would really be good. I heard so much about this place of the past, so I was truly excited to give it a try. I opted to go through the drive thru since I was ready to go home after a long day. I order the frontier burger minus onion and tomato, and onion rings instead of fries. What I came home to was an over charbroiled burger that was probably re-heated and had no flavor at all. The onion rings were lukewarm. I know this place hasn't been opened long, so I'm sure a lot of things still need to be fixed as with any new business. I'll give them another chance, plus they also serve chicken sandwiches, salads, ice cream treats, fried pies, and will be serving breakfast in the near future. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars, really. I'd go 4 stars just for the frontier burger and the fries, which were really delicious. The frontier burger is pretty good. I've only had the Frontier Burger at Jim's once or twice and not in a while . .it seems basically the same to me. It's a good fast food burger, no question. The crinkle cut fries are really great. As far as this style of fry, it's up there with the best I've had. The onion rings, though, were not as good, in my opinion. They make their onion rings cut very thin and either dredged in flour only or very little batter. Looks like dredged in flour only, to me. Anyway - these are AWESOME as a burger topping. But as a side dish, they don't work for me. Otherwise everything is as you would expect except a little hectic and dirty. They are new and have been pretty packed most of the time . .but all the open tables needed serious wipe-down during our visit. We grabbed some napkins and wiped off our own table - it was fairly gross . .the remnants of more than 1 group of diners, for sure. It's the cleanliness issue that is keeping me from being able to give a four star rating. No matter how busy a restaurant is, they need to be able to keep up with the floors, tables, trashcans, etc. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. read more

They were great when they first opened....but they have lost their way. I went there last weekend and placed to to-go order at the counter. While I sat on the bench waiting for my order, six different people came to the kitchen door from the dining room trying to get their orders fixed. My burgers, fries, and a shake order took just a few minutes shy of a half-hour to be served....but they had forgotten the shake. So a bit more waiting. The food was good, however had about a 10 inch black hair on my burger. Took to the manager Vidal, he looked at my wife, who had shorter blonde hair and said, "we do not have anyone with long black hair here". Then walked off and never said another word. Frontier is back just like the old days. Yes it's been a while and mostly like I remember it. Got the Frontier combo with Patty done to a nice medium and high marks for juiciness. Fries hot and crispy. Manager threw in Apple pie for the longer than normal although expected first day opening. Looks like we have a winner and breakfast is soon to be added. Stay tuned. Waited 30 mins in line for 2 combo meals, which came to be $18 & some change. I take it home to find out it's comparable to Mc. D's $$$ Dollar menu. Come on!!! I know the history behind the burger, but give me a break. They're even higher than What Berg, half the size, and looked as if the employee's smashed them under their armpits before wrapping them. I really don't know what it is but I only get a couple of fries. They give me less and less fries each time, and no I am not asking for free food I just want someone to fix it. When I order with my friends and family they get enough even if they order the same thing that I get. Can someone tell me if these people don't like me or something. They get 3 because it's new and they've got some "dialing in" to do. No clear signs of where to line up to order, and with lines on both sides, and them being so slow, people were getting irate. People were walking out, without even ordering. Napkins were empty. Ketchup containers empty, people standing and hoping for seats to be vacant when their orders were ready. 35 minutes to get ours and the burgers were not even hot, but considering they are new, We will go back in a month and see. With all of Jim's experience, they've made some rookie mistakes with this opening. Pity. I was really looking forward to it. read more

It was like I was invisible dude didn't look at me and I think he didn't want to take my order.
