If you are old enough to have gone to the Frontier Burgers of old, you are very lucky indeed. Chili cheese burger is epic! Freedom rings, fries and rings combo, can't be beat. The onion rings are cut so thinly and are so crispy, I can't stop eating them. The crinkle cut fries are like nowhere else. Absolutely delicious. My husband gets The Frontier Burger and enjoys that every time. He also likes the apple pie. I pass on that cause it's a little too greasy for my taste, plus I'm already usually full with the main event. Big plus-they have Big Red on the fountain! My wife and I will never visit this place ever again. To start off we were charged extra for 2 frontier sauces which we were not given. Secondly we asked for well done meat and we get all the way home and the meat is pink. Third Imy wife asked for no tomato and what did she find in her burger besides pink meat freaking tomato. First of all, if you aren't from San Antonio, you probably need to understand the history of the Frontier Burger and Jim's before you go. The Frontier Burger (double meat) and onion rings (skinny and crispy) are SA standards. Add a shake and you'll sleep in a food coma for hours. The burgers are juicy and the thin patties are cooked to order or MW if you don't specify. The onion rings are famous and I've been eating them for 40+ years. I'm very unhappy with this place. This is my third time here I ask for a burned it didn't happen. Scott the manager came out states it was not pink inside when I told him it was times three. He kept saying ma'am it was not. He advised I can do it just so you understand it's not something we do normally which of course I understood that's why I asked and asked to have it double checked that it could done. The environment is hometown with 50's music playing. Friendly staff. Very clean. Smells were the best part. Th burgers were charred (blackened) which my family doesn't love. They look nothing like the ad in which they appear juicy and meaty. We were told they're flame grilled and tend to char but they were crispy patties. The fries were crinkle cut and crunchy too. They have a great crinkle cut fry, just perfect on crispy, salt is just right. It'll be hard to find a better one. The thin cut onion rings are even better. They are super addicting and I highly recommend. One of my favorites though is the vanilla soft served cone that is chocolate dipped. Make sure you grab extra napkins because you will need them! We ordered breakfast this time around. They offer one of the better breakfasts out there for a fast food place. My husband ordered the tall stack of pancakes with bacon and 2 scrambled eggs. He made it a meal that allowed him to add grits and an orange juice. I ordered the sausage and egg biscuit and also made it a meal with grits and coffee. GRITS!!! Not an easy item to find at restaurants but its unheard of at a fast food place. They were decent too with added butter, salt and pepper. The biscuit was soft and the pancakes were huge! The best thing about this restaurant is their onion rings hands down. They are the same burgers from the Jim's restaurants all over the city without getting out of the comfort of your car. The price is a little high compared to wendy's or McDonald's, but it's worth it. When you're craving a different type of burger try this place! I really like Frontier Burger. The hamburgers are charbroiled and made to order. You do have to wait a little longer than a traditional fast food burger joint, but to me, it's worth it. The meal comes with EITHER fries or onion rings, so no extra money is charged. For 2 meals we spent 17.71. The burgers come with mayonnaise as a default, but you can make your burger anyway you want. Big fan of Frontier Burger! We're lucky enough to live close by, but for those who aren't, you might want to consider making the trip. All the food my husband and I have tried has been dynamite! We especially love their onion rings, which are the best fast-food rings around. My personal fav is the crispy hand-breaded chicken salad. I get this 9 times out of 10. Not only is it huge, but it's delicious! The hard-boiled egg is a nice addition to the colorful entree, and the ranch dressing is "da bomb." Another top item is the homemade hand pie (cherry is better than the apple, imho). The low score is not about the food or servers. Twice I've tried to order online for pickup. Both times I was told their online ordering for pickup was not working. Yesterday I tried to call in my order and their phone cut off twice. They said it was due to bad weather. The staff can only work with the tools they are given. A solid place to grab a bite to eat. Soon as you open the door and your first foot hits inside, your nose will be overwhelmed by the chargrilled burger smell -- it's pretty amazing, I must say. It took me back to the summer of '99 and my grandfather is on the grille with the brown Jesus sandals and all white linen with the shades on talking about "Who wants the next burger? Come and get it!" The place is nice, the service was amazing. I'm confident enough to say it reminded me of Chick Fil A service in regards to "fast food" places. The staff, no exaggeration, smiled the entire time I was there. ALL OF THEM. Super friendly and seemed super happy to be working there. Those things make all the difference. Now to the food, the important stuff -- good. I didn't give it a 5 star rating because of the burger. Moments it being grilled and too over cooked. We are from Austin but were in San Antonio for a funeral. I had saved the name of this place because I either read about it or saw it on TV, and we were not disappointed. The charcoal flavor of the burger makes it so much better, and the burgers are huge. So are the salads. We got an order of onion rings and they were thinly sliced and well battered. They had an old menu displayed, and when I saw fried chicken, I asked about changing my order, and Victor. who I assume was the owner, told me they no longer have it but they do have delicious chicken strips, and he brought us some, along with gravy, and they were soooo good. For fast food, this place isn't that bad. Better than Mikey D's or Burger King. We had a doctors appointment in town, and had some time to waste. Friends of mine had previously posted about it, so we decided to make a stop. I ordered a regular old cheeseburger, o rings and a tea. The kiddo got tenders, fries and a "brownie". Why the quotations? Well my kid disagrees.. it's not a brownie she mentioned about 50 times while we ate. I have to admit it's more of a sampling of a brownie, but at 3.99 for the entire kids meal... I'll take it! The burger was fresh, well topped and served in a cool triangle paper. The onion rings got kinda old after half, and wish I had gotten fries instead. Not the best burger I have ever had, but I was honestly pretty surprised. Got the patty melt and I know I'm taking a risk saying this but I definitely think it was better then a Whataburgers! The patties were pretty think and definitely not your standard fast food joint burger patties. The char flavor was there and I know I will find myself craving this burgers. Got 2 chicken tenders and their thin cut onion rings and crinkle cut fries to share with the hubby. The batter in the tenders was really flavorful but I forgot to ask for any dipping sauce. I'm always up for a burger that is cooked differently than on a griddle. Frontier uses charcoal to fire up their grill to make their burgers. I went in for the original, a two beef patty, lettuce, tomato, cheese, special sauce between two sesame buns. I liked it. The burger was juicy, but it did taste too much like charcoal; hence the 3 stars. Also the side of crinkle fries were fried too long and were hard. Surprisingly, I didn't know the history of Frontier Burger. I thought it was named after the burger at Jim's but it turns out that this burger joint was a staple in San Antonio back in the 50s and 60s. I guess that's why the clientele was an older crowd. Now you can go to any Jim's restaurant and get a good one, but you have to go to Frontier Burger to get a great one. There's something about cooking the meat over a charcoal flame that is magical. I challenge you to go to a Jim's restaurant and try a frontier burger cooked on a flat top and then try one cooked over a charcoal flame from Frontier Burger and not taste the difference. The frontier burger here in my opinion, is incredible. Now you ask, if it's so incredible why only three stars? Every time I come here the place looks dirty. Crumbs on the tables, trash not only in the recepticals but also on them. Employees standing around while the place looks like this is not good. The Charbroile burgers are great with exception of the size. The burger is too small for the price. The menu items ordered: combo meal: burger, onion rings & a beverage. The onions rings and the burger were cold and not properly made as I requested, mustard on both sides of the bread. So I asked one of the workers for some mustard and I put the mustard on my burger. Other than that fiasco, the burgers and onion rings are delicious. I also had a sample of the chicken tender - EXCELLENT!!! Oh Frontier Burger. The original. The Jim's burgers older twin. When I decided to go to frontier burger I hadn't realized that it was going to be the opening weekend. I had heard through various people that they had just opened so my family and I decided to stop by. This was kind of a bad time to go being that they were SUPER busy. They were so busy the drive through was around the building in a circle and parking was a bit tricky to find. Thankfully we finally were able to park and head inside. When we did the restaurant was again really packed with people. *NOTE* if you enjoy your burgers well done (like I do) be sure to let them know because even at Jim's they make all their burgers Medium-rare. I didn't remember this so biting into my burger surprised at seeing red wasn't too much fun but i'll get to that later. We ordered our burgers I ordered a cheeseburger as did my parents my dad a double. They come with crinkled fries and a drink. Im not sure if this establishment was getting their intercom system set up or if they're taking it old school. What I mean by this is, we were waiting for our order and instead of using a microphone or posting the numbers on a screen they call them out. Yes, They have someone either looking for the customer the order pertains to or if they're brave attempt to yell out the number over other people talking. I feel like this kind of affects the ordering process and it can really get some orders mixed up. Thankfully everything on our end came out okay although we did wait for 45 minutes at least which is expected being it was opening day weekend. We decided to take the burgers to go since there were no available tables to sit down and eat. When I arrived home I was so excited to try the burger. When I bit into it the meat was red and medium rare. I was so disappointed then I remembered that all their burgers are medium rare. That was my bad. Walked into Frontier Burger today and was quite impressed. For a fast food burger place it was very relaxed and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff was fast and accurate. Another customer was actually next to us singing along to the old school music it made this trip even better. About 9 mins later our food came out. This was the first time me and my family ate at frontier Burger -based off of recommendations of work friends. My first impression walking in wax the place was clean nice Decour and of course the smell of charbroiled burgers in the air. I ordered two kids meals and two adult meals which we received minutes of us ordering. You could tell right off the back everything was rewarmed. Not one single item of our burgers or french fries were made fresh! The burgers were rubbery you could tell they have been sitting in a warmer and the french fries were room temperature and or cold. We had invited some friends with us and their food was just at disappointing in regards to not being fresh.
