I've been to Frontier when they first came to San Antonio and loved the fresh charbroiled burger. It had been a while since I had been there and I will never return again! First the lady who took my order was nice, but once I got my order and drove off I started eating my burger and noticed the meat was cold! I returned and instead of going back through the drive through I went into the restaurant. It took five minutes for someone to wait on me. Then I assume it was a manager asked how can he help and I stated the meat in my burger was cold. He said he'd make me a fresh one and did. As I went back to my car and drove off eating my burger I noticed it was not fully cooked with the meat being extremely pink! I started to return but then I would be late to my meeting. I'd say that Frontier has a solid burger. They do offer a variety of options like a mushroom Swiss burger. Chili, they have chili. Chili cheese fries anyone? Chili cheeseburger anyone? Crinkle cut fries are always good. And they offer the option of onion rings, or doing a half and half order of fries and rings. That's a pretty nifty option I'd say. Shakes, malts, cold soft drinks. Fresh tea and I'm pretty sure I even saw fresh squeezed lemonade and Orangeade! The brownies are fantastic and their grilled (or fried) chicken sandwich is all the vibe. Beware when you order a kids meal. Stated price on the menu for a hamburger kids meal was $7.19. I was not aware until after I paid, that I was charged an additional $.79 for a slice of tomato, an additional $.79 for a small amount of shredded lettuce, an additional $.79 for a slice of onion, and the server asked if I wanted fries or onion rings and charged me an additional $1.99 to substitute onion rings. So my $7.19 kids meal ended up costing me $11.55 plus tax. Thankfully, it tasted good, but I will definitely not be going back. Very disappointed. read more

used to be the best 'go to' for thin onion rings. went yesterday..$14 for two orders. are you kidding? I'm fairly certain the onions weren't even peeled. most burned. I hate doing it myself but guess that's the only option now. thinly slice the onions, soak in milk put the flour and maybe panko in a bag and shake shake shake. after this fry away. Frontier burger is a local burger joint that serves chargrilled, made to order burgers in a fast food setting. The staff was courteous and friendly, and the line moved fairly quickly considering the food is made when ordering. The food was good and plentiful, and it was nice to have an option of fries or mac n cheese (but unsure if there was an upcharge for this) Kids burger was a fair size and the mac and cheese was a decent amount (3-4oz) and quite delicious. The freshly squeezed lemonade was tart and slightly sweet, nice change of pace from premixed soda-type lemonades. Meal price unknown since it was not on the menu. The $8 bacon cheeseburger was hefty, tasty, and very filling and the 2 slices of bacon were thick cut and cooked crispy. The chargrilled flavor was present in the juicy patty, but the taste of onions dominated the burger. The small diced onions plus watery mayo made for a onion, milky mess when eating. My biggest issue with the meal was the price of the 2 meals from a fast food type burger place. Ummm $21.18 for a bacon cheeseburger meal and a kids burger meal seemed a excessive considering the local burger options and pricing in SA. I wish I could break down the charges, but I did not receive an itemized receipt nor asked for one. I think it's $2-3 more to make the burgers into a meal... Frontier Burger is definitely one of the best fast food burger places I have ever eaten. Honestly, I don't know how they are not rated 5 stars on Yelp. everything we ordered came out hot fresh and delicious, The portions were large the facility was clean and the staff was on point but the best part is they are relatively inexpensive compared to others in the same fast food bracket when considering portion size and quality. Essentially the way it works is you pick your burger, chicken sandwich, chicken wrap Etc. and then for $2 you can make it a combo with your choice of side and drink. So I waited in the drive thru and mind you there is no one ahead of me or behind me, waited 9 min I said Hello twice and nothing figured they were busy so I pulled up to the window and not one but 2 male employees and a male manager kept walking by looked at me didn't even come to the window to ask me if I needed help or anything. We even made eye contact and still nothing so after waiting another 5 min at the window I said F it and drove off and went to whataburger where I was waited on and got my order in less time. The best part of it all was the employees. You can have a good product with bad employees and it will ruin your experience, but not here. My wife is a burger gal who has been telling me about Frontier burgers being great tasting because they're char-grilled. She is right of course and we've been to the Frontier burger several times over the past 2 years of the pandemic. In summer 2020, we ventured out to eat at Frontier, and mind you, they delivered the food to our car after ordering on the phone. That was the time nobody was venturing out to eat at restaurants. We craved to eat a burger so we went to Frontier. Fast forward to spring 2021. We ordered the burgers and took them home because we were not comfortable eating inside. This year, 2022, we've been there twice in the past 6 weeks and we actually celebrated our 2nd booster shot by going to Frontier burger. We sat down to eat and although they weren't that many people inside, at least we got to eat inside for a change. Their burgers are still tasty and the onion rings and fries are hot when they get to you. The music is a bit loud but since they play oldies for the oldies, I guess it's appropriate. What has happened to this place?? Once was the best place around for charbroiled burgers. Came inside on a Saturday afternoon around dinner time. Not one car in the lot. From outside place looked to be closed since you couldn't see any lights on inside. One car pulled into the drive thru so figured it was open. Manager was scruffy and unkempt. Dirty shirt. Acted strange all evening. Something was off with him. Hated that he brought our trays out with his unshaven scruffy beard! 2 burgers, one rings and two drinks were $32.00!! Rings were cold. Normally, Frontier Burger is awesome, but idk what happened Sunday afternoon. We went through the drive thru & ordered a #1 & #2 both with rings. We got home within 10 minutes of receiving our order, but the onion rings were a big soggy mess, both orders. They were cold and oily. They weren't separated when put into the fryer, so we got several of those clumped up rings. We ate a few, but they just weren't good. Plus, there was no ketchup or napkins in the bag. The food is as good as it ever was. The staff however, needs to get their act together. Maybe it's because it's still so new, but they seem very unorganized. They call out your number and ask you to raise your hand so they can deliver your order. The worst however, is how slick the new, pretty wood floors are. They need to be roughed up a little or put some sort of rubber or other non-sliding material on the bottom of the chair legs. I am a long time customer of this place. In fact, I was their very first customer when it opened up. As the years have gone by this place has gotten worse and worse and my visits have lessened. In fact, after today, I doubt if I'll be coming back. They are overpriced if you compare their prices to comparable places like Whataburger. But what is really disappointing, and always has been, is how soggy the buns become as soon as you start eating the burgers. The buns actually start to break apart and very quickly you've got yourself a mess. You don't have this problem with the buns at Jim's Restaurants. The meat seems to be less seasoned than in the past and the charcoal flavoring isn't there any more. The fries are crinkle type fries which are substandard. Charcoal broiled patties, 1/3lb of 100% American Beef. Their burger combos (includes fries and drink) are about $7-$9. You can sub onion rings instead for an additional charge. They have 3 speciality burgers: patty melt, Texas double and the mushroom burger. I had to try the mushroom burger and it did not disappoint. Although it's sloppily made (the cheese being on one side of the burger) and I wished they threw on more mushrooms, the burger (cooked medium) was delish! If you are a fan of Burger King's charbroiled burgers (but also prefer them cooked medium), you'll love Frontier's. People rave about their onion rings. I would say they're not bad. I am not a fan of onion rings, but I prefer Frontier's thinly sliced rings better than the thick cut ones like other places. They also serve chicken sandwiches, salads, shakes & dessert. Nobody wants to eat a burger with a wet bun The bun fell right apart while I was attempting to eat it. So this is the burger place started by the Jim's Restaurant franchises. it's near Broadway at 410 right next to the Jim's Restaurant. I got the junior Frontier Burger which was $3 and about the size of a slider. I was not impressed at all, with the burger being very dry and flavorless. Someone told me I should have gotten the double meat original Frontier Burger, but they also suggested that same Burger can be gotten at the regular Jim's Restaurants and there they are more juicy. everyday I passed this place I can smell that char grill smoke from a thousand yards away. There's just something about something cooked over flame broiled charcoal that makes a difference. As far as the quality of the meat this was about the same as Burger King and I love me a Whopper. The frontier Burger is only about a third of a pound and cost almost $6. I just don't see this worth it for the quality I'm getting and the dryness of the meat. I may go into the regular Jim's where I can get the big burger and drink a cup of coffee in a diner atmosphere. That being said you absolutely must get their shoestring onion rings with the homemade house sauce that's like a Miracle Whip sandwich dressing. Those shoestring onion rings when freshly fried will make you think of them 3 days later. I couldn't get enough of that sauce, and by the way when I get my hamburger I'm going to put extra house sauce on it. read more

It's been years since I've had a frontier burger. This is my second time coming to this location. This time it was at night and it was fairly empty. First impressions that come to mind are : smells like BBQ but looks like an old log cabin / diner with old music playing. I would say it might have been a confusing time back then or the designer hasn't left the 70s. Both visits were about the same. The cashiers were friendly and repeated the orders back correctly. I ordered the frontier burger combo the first time with onion rings and when I received my food I had 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings. My second time I ordered the single patty burger but modified it with the frontier sauce and cheddar cheese. This time when I ordered onion rings , I received lots of onion rings. I would say it was a cave of onion rings. Please see the picture attached. The taste of the burger and fries were great. Hot burger that took longer than other orders after mine. I had hot onion rings that were crunchy and very tasty. My drink from the soda fountain both visits didn't seem to have enough carbonation. I don't know but it seemed a bit flat to me. It's a quirky kind of lunch/dinner for me. It's kind of far away. It's different and tastes different than other places so that is why I give it a 3.5 to 4.0 star. I've never tried frontier Burger before, but was in the mood for a charbroil burger. Read a lot of reviews, viewed the pros and cons and went anyway yesterday, December 1. Am I glad that I did. Despite what some people were talking about cold burgers, etc. from the moment, I walked in and walked up to the counter with my friend, Tyrique - hope I spelled that right, young man, greeted, took his time with us, answered any questions we had, and then took our orders, gave us our number and we went to get our drinks and find a table. It wasn't long before they delivered our burgers, fries and onion rings to us. I had the double patty mushroom burger my friend had the regular cheeseburger with fries. I had the onion rings. Food was on point, delicious, charbroil to perfection, exactly what you want to have in the way of a charbroil burger and it's accompaniment. I left that restaurant stuff to the gills, totally satisfied and very happy that I went there. I will be going back regularly. So for you naysayers, I regret that your visits weren't comparable to mine, but let me tell you, for those of you that are of the charbroiled elk, frontier burger will not disappoint. Made from scratch all beef chili with chunks of brisket. It's the bomb . I also enjoyed the delicious crispy chicken wrap. It's bigger than you'd expect. The restaurant itself is nice. This is the second time I've purchased a burger there. The first time was shortly after they opened. The burger seemed rather bland and the price seemed rather high. I figured maybe it was an off day or maybe I was imagining it being so unimpressive, so I dismissed it. Today, I was in the area and decided to try it again, so I picked up a chili cheesburger combo to go. You can hardly tell the burger is charbroiled. Again, the patty had no taste and the chili was very bland. The meal deal ended up being around $11 and change. That's a lot for a meal deal. I should have stuck with Dairy Queen's Chilburger meal deal. This restaurant also only had de-caffeinated rootbeer. I couldn't believe it. Why de-caffeinated?
