    Star Long Strawberry Grape Tanghulu
    Finau K.

I usually make my way to Chinatown to stock up on fresh fruit, and this little juice shop right next door always catches my eye. I've seen tourists lining up to grab their tanghulu, so I finally decided to give it a try. If you've never had tanghulu before, it's fresh fruit coated in a hard sugar shell. While I appreciated the novelty and satisfying crunch, I personally found it extremely sweet. I think using slightly more tart fruits would balance it out much better, especially since many of the fruits used are already naturally sweet and ripe. I also tried one of their fresh juices. I ordered lychee juice on its own, and while it was refreshing, it tasted a bit watered down and slightly bitter. My suggestion would be to take advantage of their option to combine up to three fruits. I think mixing flavors would create a much more balanced and enjoyable drink. The service, however, was very kind. The woman helping me even offered to box up my tanghulu so I could take it home, which I really appreciated. The shop itself is small and simple, but it fits right into the Chinatown experience--quick, convenient, and perfect for grabbing a snack while you're out shopping. As for parking... if you're familiar with Jackson Street, you already know it's not the most convenient situation. If you're lucky, you'll find a spot nearby. Overall, it's worth trying at least once, especially if you've always wanted to taste tanghulu but don't want to go through the effort of making it yourself at home. At the end of the day, it's essentially fruit and sugar, but sometimes simple treats are part of the fun. I'd come back to experiment with different juice combinations and maybe give the tanghulu another shot with a more tart fruit option.

Gee, I wish I had fruitful dreams. I usually don't remember mine unless I wake up in a sweat about something that happened a hundred years ago like being late for my undergrad statistics class. This place didn't give me nightmares. It's really a fruit snack stand that drew my attention with their strawberry sticks lacquered in sugar syrup. There were several fruit sticks in the display case They also make a variety of fruit juices and smoothies. However, I snatched the $7.99 Strawberry Sando because it's hard for me to pass an opportunity to get one (Photo). I took it over to an open bench on the footbridge at Portsmouth Square. The bread was a little too soft, but the strawberries were plump and the whipped cream plentiful. Maybe that's what they meant by fruitful dreams. FOOD - 4 stars...anybody that makes strawberry sando is OK by me AMBIANCE - 3 stars...tight little space with one bench already taken SERVICE - 4 stars...the young man was quick and polite TOTAL - 4 stars...maybe I'll have a fruitful dream now RELATED - Exploring Chinatown? 12/10. The most lovely staff. She even recommended more activities in the area since we're not familiar with San Francisco. It's a small fruit stand so no tables or anything. I got the long tanghulu and it was delicious. The freshest fruits coated in a thin sugar layer made it a sweet crunchy bite! The grapes and strawberries were my personal favorite. I'd definitely recommend for a sweet snack!

Small stall in Chinatown with 2 seats inside for waiting! Service for tanghulu was quick, but the drinks take a while longer despite us being the only party

I've been on an endless hunt for tanghulu and for that, I blame social media & YouTube!! My toddler has been obsessing over these skewered Chinese snack/desserts since she's laid eyes on these colorful fruit enrobed in its crispy sugar shell. After constant Yelping & online searches, I was pretty shocked to see the lack of options. Thankfully, my sister has had a number of visits to SF's Chinatown & stumbled across Fruitful Dreams. Here you will find: fresh fruit, fruit sandwiches, tanghulu, teas, smoothies, juice, and ice creams. Purchased: Tanghulu Stick [strawberry & grape] Crystal Fruit Marble Stick [assorted flavors] The tanghulu was great. The fruit was fresh and the sugary coating was solidly hard, giving off that delightful crunch you expect. The sugar candy outer layer was sweet but not as sweet as our previous try with another business. The crystal fruit marbles were almost too pretty to eat. They had a good texture and bite to them. The sweetness level was a lot more lighter than the tanghulu. This particular item would be great on a hot day being that it is so refreshing. The young lady running the shop was nice and extremely patient as my indecisive toddler went back and forth with all of the beautiful treats. Pricing is fair and it most certainly will not break the bank. 5/5 stars. Fruitful Dreams is perfect for the fruit lover in your life. I definitely want to come back and try the freshly pressed sugarcane juice but only if it comes in those adorable sugarcane bottles.

Came here because I was craving boba. Got their mango polemo sago and the owner told me that fruit teas are popular. Very refreshing on a hot day. The mango was sweet . Tanhulu is so pretty . I'll definitely come back to try other drinks

(Dec 2025) Finished fruit basket assembly before gift wrapping
    Aly C.

===TL;DR=== - Assembled a fruit basket - Regular basket $28, weave baskets are close to $50 - Choice of fruits are additional cost ===TMI=== It's the holiday season so I wanted to see where I can buy a fruit basket to gift as a gift. Who knew it'll be so hard to find one nowadays (is this consider outdated now? haha)!! Luckily I stumble upon this place via XHS so I paid them a visit. Off the bat, this store is covered in fruits. They have it all.. from your normal grocery store fruits to seasonal ones to exotic ones, you name it. I'm so glad they had a variety of fruit basket and box choices where you can choose which one fits your needs and spending range. I chose the basket and co-selected the fruits I wanted. The lady there was super transparent, professional and nice. There would be fruits I ask for and she said she won't recommend it if they're not good or not in season. She was also helpful in the selection process since she knows what's right for the season. She was also very transparent with the fruit recommendations as some are more expensive than others so the choice is on your court. If you also want to assemble a fruit basket, you can either let them know ahead of time via phone and they can assemble one for you to pick up. The second option is you can visit them in person like me, this gives you a choice to select/ co-select/ or have them select the fruits. The whole process takes about 30 mins in store. The lady told me they open at 8am but they need time to set up the storefront so if you decide to assemble a fruit basket in person, earliest time they'll be ready for that service will be 10am. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. It was almost like watching a concept came to life, especially when she was doing the final wrapping! I wanted this fruit basket to be a very good one so mine was about little over $100 for the final product since I went with some premium fruit options - couldn't be more content. Again, they're super flexible with your price range and which tier of fruits they recommend so have no fear. Highly recommend this experience to anyone! Side note: they also sell fresh smoothies and other goodies on the side so give them a try!

Again, some history here. I don't remember what occupied this store other than it being flanked by the Grandview Theater and a Chinese book and magazine store. I remember browsing at the book store for Hong Kong magazines that had photos and news about popular HK movie and TV stars. I was entranced with kung fu, specifically swordfighting movies then. About twenty years later, a couple opened a produce store that specialized in exotic and Asian fruits. The variety ranges from cherimoyas, dragon fruits, longan (dragon eyes), lychees (domestically and Asian grown) when in season, papaya, and other basic fruits. My mom used to often wander here to shop for our family as she enjoyed durian (an acquired taste for me). The ownership of this store has changed twice since the original owners retired with the most recent being in the past year. Several of the staff are holdovers from the previous business and are helpful and knowledgeable about what they sell. Good spot to find those difficult to find and, in most cases, higher end fruit varieties. Be careful though as they also tend to upsell some of their items.

    Crystal Y.

My favorite drink here is the papaya crave. It's fresh milk and papaya blended together. Their sugarcane is also 100% fresh and made upon order. You can see the canes go through the juicer at the front. I've also liked their tea drinks and blended smoothies too. Being connected to a fruit shop means that the quality of the fruit never misses. I also like that the ice levels can be adjusted. You can also tell them "no sugar" but I don't think they add any additional sweeteners.

Super bad service !!!!!!!! The ice cream was melted, and the customer service was very disappointing, especially since you're paying for the experience.

    Alicia A.

Got some boba drinks and the strawberry tang hulu. Boba drinks are so so, so of the tapioca pearls very hard and chewy while others were fresh. My strawberry matcha latte was so so, I liked that they used fresh strawberries in the drink but not enough matcha in the drinks. That strawberry mango smoothie was actually pretty good. The strawberry tang Hulu was sweet and the extra sugar stuck to the teeth.... Make sure don't go to dentist after that. Small store and they make their drinks in the back. Service was ok.

My wife and I were walking around Chinatown looking at all the different shops when we ran into Fruitful Dreams. They had a counter set up selling tanghulu and were interested because we never tried them before. Pricing is pretty fair compared to other places. I will say buying tanghulu and trying it while walking the streets has a different feeling than buying them at a cafe. It was a nice random find where the food did not disappoint and the lady working the counter was super friendly and welcoming.

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

The portion size was nice and large, and the mochi on top was so soft and chewy. The salted duck egg topping tasted like the filling in the lava egg yolk buns from dim sum, so earthy and rich and sweet with a perfect umami hit.
