I recently went to Fugato for dinner with a friend. And online Fugato was advertised as a fusion between Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. However, I found the options to be primarily Italian and Spanish. You are served complementary bread with olive oil/balsamic vinaigrette for dipping. And all I have to say about it, is that it was the warmest bread that I have ever been served at a restaurant and I absolutely loved it! We ended up ordering the CHÈVRE CROQUETTES for an appetizer, which were really good, however, the primary flavor was of goat cheese. They were served with a sweet and a savory sauce and I truly couldn't decide which one I liked better. For dinner, we got GNOCCHI ASIAGO and PAPPARDELLE FUGATO which were both flavorful however, a bit too salty. For dessert we shared the ZABAGLIONE which was advertised as Italian custard/berries. When we picked the item, we were not aware there would be alcohol infused, which was okay and tasted good however, I think it would be good to include that on the menu. Now this could be normal for Italian custard, and if so I was just not aware. Overall, the portion sizes were rather small for the price. However, I will say all of the pasta tasted homemade and fresh. There only seemed to be 2 servers/waiters working which was fine as it is a smaller restaurant. It's a quaint but formal establishment (definitely great for a date night) and it's very intimate. First dish: the octopus was devine. Cooked with the perfect texture, and yummy thin sliced potatoes underneath. Second dish: Pappardelle Fugato. Guys, 20/10! The noodles were perfect, they tasted homemade. The meat was soft and tender, mixed with the broth and shredded parmesan. My mouth is watering just from describing it. It was a spiritual experience, I swear! Went here on a Monday night a group. The restaurant isn't spacious so everything was kind of tight, especially on the tables. The menu has a lot of great options to choose from and the daily specials sound really good. They have a wonderful wine selection, so if you love wine definitely try this place. I had the plantain soup and chèvre croquettes to start and that first sip of soup tasted heavenly and left me wanting more. It's a great choice of appetizer to start with and was very flavorful. The croquettes though did not taste good at all and made it inedible. There was something when you bit into it that just did not taste good, like it was soapy or cooked after something else and the flavors from that other thing was left to mix. For main course I had the pappardelle fugato. I definitely recommend this dish. The shredded short ribs were cooked to perfection and the flavor was scrumptious. I paired it with the Cabernet cake bread and that just made it taste even better. My fiancé's main course did not taste so great. Her dish had the same issue as the chèvre croquettes. Since her dish came with fish we assumed that they cooked the shrimp in the pasta which also the off the flavor. Overall this is in nice date night location with some great choices of food to choose from. I had a good overall experience at Fugato. Fugato is located in the heart of Coral Gables which they describe as Western Mediterranean fusion inspired by the cuisines of Italy, France, and Spain. I found the fusions to be closer to Italian, Cuban and Asian. We arrived a few minutes before open and they were very kind to let us in and seat us right away. They do not have a full bar but their wine list, while simple, offered great choices. The service was very good, they were very attentive without being intrusive. Fugato has a very quiet, romantic atmosphere with dim lights and soft instrumental music makes this a great choice for a date night, to try at least once but don't come with a big appetite. The pasta was delicious, it was perfect. I can go on & on about the pear filling -it was a beautiful blend of sweet and salty which is my favorite. - Although quite delicious, all the things we ordered left us wondering where the rest was. TLDR - Think I just found one of the best spots in Miami... Came here with a buddy for lunch just off a recommendation and was blown away by the quality of the food here. In a backstreet off of Miracle Mile, Fugato bears an unassuming presence and is easy to miss if passing by. While it looks like any other small restaurant that pops up in Coral Gables, looks surely are deceiving. Food here was beyond incredible. We were pretty hungry and decided on go balls to the wall on ordering almost too much food. Almost, because we managed to finish everything last bit, down to the balsamic drizzle. Here are some of my favorites: Duo Tartare - Wasn't on the menu, but offered as a special. It was a mix of salmon and tuna, with avocado and some citrus. Side of soy sauce for added flavor. Chevre Croquettes - This one struck me by surprise, because I'm not big on goat cheese. My friend insisted on getting it, and I'll try anything. Melt in your mouth, full of flavor, and with the guava sauce dip, became some Cuban Martha Stewart elevated 5-star tasting menu scrumptiousness. Gnocchi Porcini - Akin to goat cheese, not the biggest gnocchi guy here. But this instantly became the second favorite dish I had. The stuffed gnocchi was like biting into a pillow. A pillow stuffed with delicious cheese and covered in porcini cream sauce. Took my first bite, and it was like falling into puppy love after a first kiss. Fiochetti Poire - This one was interesting. The pear gave good sweetness without overpowering the dish. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the pink sauce was divine. If you like a little sweet and salty, this is the way to go! Porcini Risotto - This dish itself asked me out, took me on a dream date, and took me home to make sweet sweet consensual love. I think I might have even rolled my eyes when I had the first scoop. This also wasn't on the menu, but I am so glad they offered and we ordered. This is a must order if you like those earthy mushroom flavors and if you're a risotto fan. To sum up my experience, Fugato is stupid good. It's also the perfect example of a restaurant you've never heard of, yet will become your go-to once you've tried it. The ambience makes for a perfect date spot, and then you get to take a stroll out on Miracle Mile. Loved every bit of it and definitely will be coming back. Protip - Ask for specials! Let's start by saying that overall this spot is remarkable. However, if we could give half stars this would be a 3.5. Now I'll get to the details. We were promptly greeted and taken to our table. Atmosphere: (5/5)Just enough lighting and music created a comfortable and enjoyable ambience. You could see but were not blinded and you could listen to the music but could still chat without screaming. Loved it! It's one of those places where your dinner can become three hours long. Service: (3/5 our waiter, 5/5 the rest of the staff) Our waiter's name I believe is Rafael, or at least that's what the bill says since I don't recall him saying his name. He was an efficient waiter but that's it, not the great waiter I expect at a place such as this one. If I were to sum up what he's lacking I'd say some charisma and a smile or at least a smirk. As a guest I don't want to feel my waiter is impatiently and uneasily waiting for me to order or even less, leave. If I do not ask for the check, no matter how long I have been there, please don't bring it. And even less when you are going to end up charging approx $340. Please don't rush me. Another point, when one wants to know the 'book' details of a dish one can read the menu. From the waiter we want the extra particulars: his opinion and those of other guests ( preferably with a welcoming attitude). Rafael should know this, being warm and friendly is a huge part of being a memorable waitress. Being observant, knowledgeable about the menu and getting the order right is not all.
