When I was in middle school, my brother took me up to UC Davis for a weekend during the summer. My parents were busy and he thought it would be better than watching television at home. He did take me to cool places like this arcade hall, somewhere in Davis, as well as Fuji Sushi Buffet. After my experience there, I was ready to sign myself up for Davis as well. Obviously, priorities changed and I ended up going to a school more known for it's Accounting program - UCSB. Nonetheless, I did visit the Fuji in Davis and Vacaville within that decade span. Some of my gym friends mentioned that the Fuji family (owned and operated by Cantonese folks) were establishing a location in Concord. Surely enough, I looked online and saw that it was planned to be across from the Veranda. I made a mental note and went about my day. When it finally opened, I took my significant other here and we were pleased with having Fuji super accessible. My favorite things to get on the menu (note that certain items are only available during the nighttime) are the Ikura (salmon roe) Nigiri. It's different than the Tobiko (flying fish roe) as it's larger in size and has a saltier and more umami quality. Another favorite is their Aburi Salmon Nigiri (Seared Salmon Nigiri). They use a blow torch to sear the top of the salmon and add additional spicy mayo sauce, furikake, and tobiko to make the mouth feel fantastic. The servers are always very kind and respectful. Yeah I'm gonna mess around and give this place a 4.5/5. Rounding up to a 5 star here on Yelp. I really like this sushi buffet tbh. They have a revolving conveyer belt at the center of the restaurant which you can walk to and pick up whichever sushi roll you want and bring it to your table. There's a big selection of sushi rolls spinning around, and there's also a "bar" connected to the conveyer belt that also has sushi rolls ready to go. At the center of the conveyer belt are the sushi chefs. If there's something you want that you don't see on the belt or the bar, you can order directly with the chefs, and they'll make it for you. This is also how you get Sashimi, because that's normally not on the belt. The chefs are super flexible and will make your order exactly, for example, if you ask for 12 pieces of salmon sashimi and 12 pieces of tuna sashimi, they'll give you a huge plate with all of the sashimi on it. I truly love this ordering system because you're not gated by rounds or by your tablemates. For example, other sushi buffets use a touch screen ordering system or a dry erase menu, and you order sushi for your table in rounds where you have a limited amount of sushi you can get each round. At Fuji, each individual at the table can choose whatever they want from the sushi belt or place their own custom order with the sushi chefs, they don't have to wait for the next round or have to "share" their order with their tablemates. The one caveat is that you have to line up to order with the chefs, and the line can get pretty long when the restaurant gets busy. So maybe you want to place a big order together with your friends so you don't all have to line up. They also have tons of sides you can order like chicken kara'age, soft shell crab, sesame chicken, gyoza, and more. To be honest I didn't try too many of them because I focused on the sashimi and the sushi, but the ones I tried were just ok. The only reasons I can't give this place a 5 star are: - The sushi quality is nothing special. It's not terrible, definitely restaurant quality, but nothing to write home about. - The price could be cheaper, but I'm nitpicking here, honestly $30 is not bad for AYCE - The location is not the best. Some can be taken from the revolving belt or you can walk up and order the specific rolls you may be looking for. The items like dessert, tempura, and soup can be ordered through your server. Not the best sushi, but definitely not the worst. If you're in the area, I would recommend to definitely try for the one time. $24.99 for lunch and around $31.99~ for dinner! You order drinks, appetizer, and desserts through your server (it's easy to flag them down, but they don't really check up on you) and you order sushi and special plates through the sushi chef. There's also a conveyer belt that has basic nigiris, wakame salad, CA roll, and fruit floating around and you're welcome to grab as much as you'd like. I didn't really like their system on how you have to stand in line if you wanted to order through the sushi chef. Then if the sushi isnt ready, they send you back to your table and call you out loud to pick up your sushi. I had to get up from my table a lot taking time away from enjoying my dining experience. By standing in line and waiting to order, I'm unable to eat the "AYCE" sushi options and there's a 90 minute time limit. I have been wanting to try an AYCE sushi, this was the closest I could find with great reviews. We showed up right before opening and there was a line of people already. I didn't think it would be that busy! We were seated right away, they had a good selection of apps and rolls, most of the rolls were dry or too crunchy, but it most of them were decent. Everything looked fresh, and overall it was pretty good. The service was mostly nice and they were very attentive. Now the rules are you get an 1.5 hours at your table before they kick you out for the next guest. We were brought our check that showed we were sat at 11:24, were were pretty much done eating by 12: 15, but we were stilling picking at some items as we didn't want to waste anything plus great conversations with friends we hadn't seen in awhile. Around our 1 hour mark, another server came by and said she would take our order for Last call. When we finally decided we were done we were still 15 minutes from our time and they were hovering over our table to get it cleaned up. It just felt like we were being pushed out. read more

Lunch is $25 per person for unlimited sashimi and rolls--but if you're trying to fill out and get the best bang for your buck, I would highly recommend going back in line for the yellowtail, salmon, and tuna sashimi, as well as the unagi which doesn't come with any rice. We went around 5-6 times for these two dishes for two people and were stuffed by the end. Sashimi is fresh, fatty, and tender. The unagi is extra fatty and the sweet sauce they use complements the fish perfectly. The other dishes we tried were the tempura and the salmon skin hand rolls. Both were delicious--the fatty salmon skin complements the rice and seaweed wrap so well, and we couldn't get enough of any of the dishes. Wish we had bigger stomachs so we could have eaten more! I was seated within 15 minutes of it opening and because of the ease of access to food, I was also eating within 15 minutes of opening. AYCE is $24.99 on weekdays for lunch, $32.99 for dinner and on weekends and holidays. If you manage your expectations, Fuji is an excellent value for the price. LOAD UP on the Hamachi Collar- it is sooo flavorful and delicious! I like how you can order sashimi from the counter- yes to less rice to fill you up! My mom's favorite is the smoked salmon sashimi. My personal fav is the seared fish plates (salmon + tuna)- I like the hint of spice. The sesame balls were a hit for dessert. Their orange slices are also surprisingly good and sweet. Hands down one of my favorite sushi places to go to in the Bay. They have a wide selection of sushi, sashimi, hand rolls, and appetizers! There's always something new to try. I'm glad they opened one in Concord because it's closer to me than the Vacaville location. In front of the store on the outside there is a tablet so you can join the waitlist, but you can also join the waitlist here on Yelp which is extremely convenient. I strongly recommend joining the waitlist on Yelp so you can get a head start because wait times can get extremely long. But trust me the food is so worth the wait. You have the option to choose if you want bar seating or regular table seating. Personally I like the bar seating because that allows you easy access to the conveyor belt where all the goodies are. On the conveyor belt you have a variety of things like sushi rolls, seaweed salad, jellyfish salad, oranges, and more. There is also a station at the front end where you can order sashimi and hand rolls. Depending on whether it's lunch or dinner, the price per person will vary, but it ranges around $30. Checking in through Yelp was convenient but it all goes downhill from here. Maybe it was because we walked in an hour before closing on a Saturday but I still want to write about my experience. Was seated at the bar when we were called with chopsticks, napkins and sauce bowls. No one came to take drink orders or take appetizer orders for about 20 mins. The conveyor belt was empty besides 3 dishes of seaweed salad. We had to get up multiple times and wait in line to order. Luckily, the chefs complete the orders fast but standing in a long line with one order window in a crowded dining area just wasn't worth it. We were in line for so long that the servers actually closed out our tab and cleaned up. We walked back with new utensils and everything. The fish itself is not that great. At least it wasn't that fishy tasting. I got a large sashimi platter and some of the pieces (especially the albacore) were frozen. I never thought I'd have to wait for my sashimi to warm up to eat it. Nigiri was alright. No frozen pieces but there was a lot of rice per piece. Lastly, I ordered fried bananas for a dessert and it never came :( I wanted to like this place but this experience has made me not want to return nor recommend it to anyone. read more

Service: At an AYCE place with high cost ingredients, you'd expect them to not be attentive and to do a bare minimum of giving you what you want/need. This place was the opposite. The main person who was taking orders (I think he said people call him Kiwi?) was possibly the hardest working server/waiter I've ever seen. He was handling the orders for nearly the whole front house for hot food. He did forget to get us water a couple times but was very apologetic about it. They were super smart. Our reservation was at 5:00 and they called out reservations to be seated first. When you get in, you see the conveyor belt fully stocked and the sushi chefs ready with pre-sliced fish. Perfect amount to get through the initial surge of people but it wasn't sitting there so it was bad. Food: The quality of food was good. The first sets were great but as time went on, (maybe coincidence) it went to good. The Salmon went from fatty with large white stripes to leaner. It really may have been that there was a different part of the fish they cut up, but honestly in the end, it didn't matter. It was all delicious. Setup: They had a conveyor belt that you could walk up to to get food. Genius. Then they also had a bar to order hand rolls and Sashimi... yes you read that right. An AYCE place that has SASHIMI. AYCE sushi for about $32/per person is a steal. It includes everything but drinks. You can even order special sashimi orders or hand rolls, made to order. They have a conveyer belt with regular sushi rolls or a counter for specialty rolls. The dessert is fried bananas and red bean sesame balls. I wish the fried bananas came with ice cream but the red bean sufficed since it's my fave. For apps, the soft-shell crab is yummy. I would skip the grilled hamachi next time. Eh...It's a 2.5 star from me rounded down. We went on a Saturday afternoon (when it was hella raining) and had a reservation. We arrived and we noticed you could choose between sitting at the bar or a regular table. We ended up choosing to sit at the bar for waiting an additional few more minutes for seating to free up there. Is this the same Fuji business from Davis? I remember eating there in the mid 2000's when I was looking at colleges to apply to (UC Davis). It looks like it closed down a few years ago, and this restaurant seems like it was set up in a similar fashion that I remember in Davis. There's a shelf area where you can line up and take plates of sushi from (very similar to the old Davis location). It was pretty gross because lots of other customers that day were pretty "coughy" and they would cough while they were at this shelf picking up sushi. There is nothing to protect the sushi plates on the shelves from this. We basically ordered our rolls exclusively from the chefs because of this. The sushi on the conveyor belt was better in a way because they were covered by lids that didn't have any openings or holes in them (which was great), but the conveyor belt in general pretty much sucked because the chefs would often times take from them to serve customers and you would only have 7-10 plates to choose from which ended up being all the same rolls that were not popular and continued to rotate around the belt throughout the entire service. Also the layout and overall arrangement of the restaurant massively sucks. Most customers want to sit at the bar so it's pretty popular there, but it's situated in a very high traffic area. There's basically always someone walking behind you, passing by, and it's not a great experience to constantly have people behind you passing by while you're trying to enjoy your meal. It could be customers, it could the bus boys, it could be the waiters whizzing on by. A lot of them were also accidentally kicking my chair and bumping into me while I ate. This could be avoided by sitting at a regular table, however, if you order from the chefs, they literally shout out and call you from afar to come pick up your sushi. They were not delivering it to your table. They would also reach over existing customers who were sitting at the bar just to hand the sushi plate over to the customers who stopped by to pick up their order that were sitting at tables further away. I don't know why they think this is a good idea to make customers sitting at the bar feel cramp and crowded as is, they should designate an area for table customers to pick up their food instead. Overall the sushi tasted ok, it's AYCE (and a good price too now-a-days especially) but kind of sub par even for AYCE. Most of the sushi/sushi rolls were very cold and tasted like it was sitting out for a bit. Even the ones ordered from the chefs tasted like this for some reason. They did present our salmon sashimi order very nicely which was a flower, was very impressive indeed. I know this practice really kicked up during the pandemic, but it seems like most restaurants don't really fire on all cylinders until it's dinner time and on a prime day (or one of the prime days) of the week. I guess the Saturday lunch we visited on wasn't a prime time to visit. Maybe your experience will be different, but overall I probably wouldn't come back unless they make some changes or maybe they'll open one down in the South Bay, cause I'm not really fixing to drive up to Concord again for this lol I also think South Bay/Peninsula has better AYCE sushi options and I think Kenzo Sushi still tastes better. read more
