Had pork Gyoza and chicken Yakitori appetizer and Hibachi Chicken and Steak for entree. Came with a nice little salad w/ginger dressing and miso soup. I have only a few prior experiences with Japanese food and discovered I'm not into the miso flavor. (although I love Korean kimchi which is also a fermented product but different from miso). The noodles included with my entree had miso so I didn't eat them. I would go back and try things different things without miso. I'm sure there are many other things to try. This is a consistently good restaurant. I've been coming here with my family regularly since they opened I would guess at least 10 years ago. Japanese food is expensive because the ingredients are expensive so be prepared but you'll definitely get value for money. They have a great sushi bar, hibachi and a regular dining area. My wife and I lived in Japan for a while and I can say that the food here is as good and fresh as anything I've eaten there. It's BYOB which is not an issue. ( let's face it, this is New Jersey). There's a well stocked liquor store down the road ( with a good selection of Saki and Japanese beer). The servers get your glasses, ice buckets set up straight away. Yes it's popular and gets busy but the service is consistently good and the owner is on the floor all the time. It's a favorite of ours and it's worth noting that the owner is putting money back into the business again to tastefully expand both the dining areas and the parking space. As for Hibachi for the 4th time we were rushed out the door! We had gone out this time for our friends daughters 7th birthday and were not offered a dessert menu or a happy birthday song or dessert even when we mentioned its her birthday ( We were not looking for a free-bee ) . During our meal they handed us our check and pretty much abandoned our table ( PS this is only 45 minutes into our meal ) plus added a 18% gratuity which I anticipated with 8 people. When someone finally came to collect the check I had told them that I was not happy and would only pay 15% ... She responded that's fine you need to leave because we are busy ! I just had a wonderful birthday dinner for my son. Food was delicious and service was excellent. I have a seafood allergy and they took very careful measures to ensure I was not exposed to a drop of it. Prices are not outrageous, considering how hibachi places are usually priced. We've been here several times and have enjoyed it every time.We did not divulge it was HIS birthday because he did not want the staff to know, but a girl at my table did get the birthday routine. I have to say, as birthday routines go, this one makes me laugh the most. The very upright, proper manager sounds as gong, dons a mask and gives a hilarious performance. I have been to FUJIYAMA many times. The food is always excellent. Being a vegetarian I find their menu to be very accommodating. My wife and I went last night for dinner and I was a bit disappointed with the sushi rolls. I immediately noticed the nice new menus and the higher prices. All of which is fine, I understand that they are trying to run a business and turn a profit. BUT my issue here is that the sushi rolls are getting smaller and smaller. Not a whole lot of bang for the buck. Maybe they will read this and take into consideration that they are starting to get a bit pricey when it comes to their veggie rolls. read more

Unless you are looking for a floor show at the Hibachi table, the food was disappointing. I was visiting my in-laws and needed to get out of the house, so I snuck over to try Fujiyama. I had the sashimi lunch special and two pieces of uni sushi at the sushi bar. The lunch special included miso soup. I usually don't eat the watered-down miso soup that's served in most Japanese restaurants, but it was flavorful and not watered-down. The sushi chef asked whether he could serve the uni sushi on the same plate as the sashimi, which was fine with me. The sashimi consisted of slices of what appeared to be fresh, Grade A tuna, red snapper and salmon. All of the fish was served slightly cold, but not overly so. I'm a purist who doesn't put soy sauce or wasabi on sashimi or sushi, and all of the fish was fresh and delicious. The uni also appeared to be Grade A and tasting it bore that out. Regarding pricing, I consider it to be very reasonable. The sashimi lunch special was $12.95 and the two pieces of uni sushi were $10.00. I never would have guessed that Hackettstown, New Jersey, is home to an excellent sashimi and sushi restaurant, but it is! I'll be back, again, for sure. read more

one of the better places to eat in this area. there is an array of food to choose from and they have a mix of korean dishes in addition to the typical japanese cuisine. the sushi is probably the best food they offer, and typically priced. service is attentive, but sometimes the food takes some time depending on what you order. will definitely have to check out the downstairs hibachi area one of these days. read more

Went there tonight for Hibachi and Sushi as my wifes family was in town for the holiday. I've been there before but tonight was a bit different. I'm hoping one or two staff waiters/waitresses called in sick tonight because the service was pretty bad. The poor girl was all alone on the basement dining area which is crazy to imagine it could be done on purpose. Even the owners were running around trying to help. Anyway, we ordered and while some ordered Hibachi some ordered sushi. We even ordered some basic appetizers. The appetizers came out just after our entree's were being prepared rather than before. My poor father in law's sushi meal didn't even come out until everyone was almost done with dinner! The food seemed pretty much to everyone's liking (I had the Hibachi Filet Mignon and chicken, though I felt the chicken was a little too dry - the filet was cooked perfectly). Either way it was a disappointing experience for the family. We were all excited about going here. Like I said earlier, I hope a few staff called in sick and that was the reason. read more

We live in the area and this was only the second time we ate there. Not sure why we overlook this restaurant but we will definitely be back. I keep forgetting it's a Japanese/Korean restaurant. Food and service was very good. We had the traditional meal instead of the hibachi bc I was craving Korean food. For appetizer we ordered the Negimaki and Boston roll. Entree was Gopdol Bibimbap which was served on a hot stone pot. If you like the crunchy rice on the bottom, then get it on the pot, otherwise order the regular bibimbap. My husband had the Hotate Gai Yaki which is broiled scallp with enoki mushroom. We both enjoyed our meal and also ordered a Bulgogi Japchae for takeout. The best part was they have my fav for dessert, fried ice cream! Place is a bit pricey but the food was worth it. read more
